    Eggs Benedict
    Caleigh F.

The hostess was incredibly kind and professional when I brought up that something was wrong with the Eggs Benedict. She listened, worked with us to find a solution, and even comped the meal, all handled with care and respect, which we really appreciated. At that point, I thought the issue was just that the dish was messy and didn't have real hollandaise, it looked like plain egg yolk poured on top. Later, I realized it was even worse: the poached egg didn't have a yolk inside at all. It wasn't broken or runny, the yolk was simply missing. That, combined with the lack of hollandaise, meant it wasn't Eggs Benedict in any way. We calmly told another staff member what had happened, not to demand anything, but just to give feedback. Instead of listening, he immediately got defensive and escalated the situation. He raised his voice, said things like, "What do you want me to even do?" and "Do you want a gift certificate or something?" and even criticized us for the calm tone we were using. It was a bizarre and uncomfortable response to simple, respectful communication. We had planned to leave a $20 tip for the great service from the hostess, but after that interaction, we felt too disrespected to stay. It was a disappointing end to what could have been a positive experience. Also, we have been here around 5 times now with no issue, and will now never be returning. Update to the response of the owner (since it doesn't directly let me comment under his comment): Your response confirms everything I wrote. I did feel like I was talking to a child with your aggressive responses and no you didn't listen. This was why I had to calm you down by talking slow. Yes the hostess was wonderful and we didn't want the entire meal comped. This was why we were going to leave a $20 tip. Good job covering that as they deserve it. Honestly I cannot believe you are the owner. Handling conflict must be a nightmare with you as it was today. Your comment on the staff spending 5 minutes at the table is a huge exaggeration as is your take on things.

Dropped in for Friday evening dinner, 6:15-ish. We were seated immediately, all booths were full but plenty of tables open. Both of us had viewed the online menu so we ordered immediately. Water and tableware came quickly and we sat back to appreciate the ambiance that is Skavone's. I don't use the phrase lightly but this is the second time that I've called a place "quintessential" Portland. This restaurant has been around seemingly forever yet it continues to provide a quality meal at a reasonable price. And, if it's made any changes other than to its menus, they're not noticeable. This night I had the Steelhead with asparagus and polenta. At least that's what the online menu said. That I received Brussels sprouts instead of asparagus was not unexpected considering the asparagus season ended a couple of months ago. The fish was nicely cooked although smothered in caper cream sauce. Polenta was cute little triangles of goodness. So, four stars. Minus one because prices on the online menu need to be updated. Also, maybe put the cream caper sauce on the side? Of course we'll be back.

Used to come here when my friend lived around the corner, but haven't been in a while so while we were nearby and wanted food I thought to come in. Really glad we stopped in because I wanted their smoked salmon benny. My partner got some kind of egg dish, but I think he got it mostly for the gravy, which he very much enjoyed. My BIL got a sandwich that hit the spot and I had some of his fries, which were so tasty! I feel like the service (which was prompt and friendly) as well as the food are still as good as I remembered. Plus I had so much salmon I didn't feel cheated when I gave some to my cats at home later.

Sckavone's represents everything I love about the Portland brunch seen. The restaurant itself is a no frills kind of place where you would expect to find a very mediocre breakfast and and lunch menu. However, the food is. on. point. I ordered the smoked salmon benedict and it was literally the best benedict I'v ever had (and I love me some eggs benny). Their house made hollandaise isn't as thick or creamy as I'm accustomed to, but it paired very well with rich and smokey salmon. They also brought delicious little cranberry scones to our table before ordering which were so warm and fresh. Additionally, I enjoyed their coffee which can sometimes be overlooked by brunch spots. Some additional bonuses include ample parking, and a relatively short wait time to be seated. I arrived with a group of four others and were able to be seated within fifteen minutes (on a Sunday at 10:00am). If you're looking for an affordable, unpretentious brunch spot with excellent food and friendly/efficient service, this is the place to go. I would definitely return!

We recently took a staycation in downtown Portland and decided to have brunch there. At 1030 on a Saturday morning, we were still able to get a table. It was crowded, but the noise level was do-able. Service was excellent, very friendly and efficient. All of the waitstaff seemed very relaxed, which I thought was great. They bring beignets to every table as a starter. They are light, airy and not too sweet. For breakfast, I had the Ed's scramble, which had a ton of veggies in it, but also cheese. It was served with a ranchero sauce and sour cream. This was very, very good. My husband had the chili and cheese omelet, he said it was great and it looked really good. This is an excellent dining spot that has been in Portland for years. I can see why.

After we ordered, I went to the bathroom and the food was already out when I came back to the table. I ordered a salmon benedict, so it did not seem like it was "made to order." The salmon benedict, although highly recommended by the waitress, was extremely fishy, even though the "hollandaise sauce" (which had no depth of flavor, and was just thick) covered the entirety of the egg, salmon, and english muffin. It came with cheesy hash browns which again had no depth of flavor. Cheese makes anything tasty but it was just too much. The service, while friendly, was not attentive. We were unsure who our server was and I had to flag down the server for the bill and then to take my card 10 minutes later.

We watched two tables leave without ordering. We waited until our food arrived to receive a drip coffee and a hot tea. (And when it did arrive the coffee was a cold cup of machine rinse. I really wanted what many have posted as the Hawaiian Breakfast: 2 eggs, 2 spam, 2 Portuguese sausage, white rice. But it wasn't on the menu. Our server accommodated my request (thanks to the pictures from Yelpers). But when it arrived it was 3 eggs, 2 spam and rice. Overall the menu is confused. Is it a Hawaiian theme or not. Scant options is rice. Lots of potatoes. Even the condiments were confused; no soy or siracha on the table but ketchup and Tapatio. The general lack of caring by the management is what sticks with me. The sad bowl of sugar packets, jam packets, creamers and stir sticks all thrown together on the table like a mistake. But when I asked for honey or soy our server had to go to the kitchen and get side dishes of these. C'mon y'all. Pay attention to the details. Your customer sure are.

Mothers is a great place to eat downtown, but I'd recommend making reservations or at least calling ahead. They get busy! The beverages were however very nice, and I recently had the cobbler dessert and it looked amazing and tasted better. We had the coffee (Extracto, love.), I had a really good hef and my mother a very well balanced Bellini that I was very pleasantly surprised with trying. From what I saw, the lunch sounds very good and I'd be more apt to recommend folks give that a shot if they happened to be going there too. I'm not sure if I'd recommend as a must go stop. Vibe wise, the ambience is overall really nice. I think having rolled flatware, even with just upgraded napkins, would better complete the aesthetic you initially see and feel. This would also connect with the price point of the food and quality of the beverages. As a fellow server, on that note I would expect more consistent stronger visual appearance standards with servers. (Sorry guys! But some of you looked great!) Overall, I'd definitely join a friend for coffee and lunch over there in the future. Just wouldn't be my top pick for a celebratory brunch or intimate dinner with a date or friends and fam.

My special order pastrami sandwich was a winner--like a Reuben's cousin, but with its own personality. The shaved meat was perfectly tender, pairing beautifully with my soup. The rest of the family (a mix of kids and adults) went for a variety--salads, a shaved ham sandwich, and tater tot casserole. No complaints from anyone, which, if you've ever dined with kids, is practically a miracle. Everyone left full, happy, and with just enough leftovers for a bonus lunch the next day. Bottom line? Great food, warm atmosphere, and service that made us feel truly welcome. We'll be back!
