Nancy's Greek Cafe (shares space with Nancy's Pastries) Ordered a variety of items a la carte for Saturday lunch: babaganoush, hummus, dolmas, chicken kebab, lamb kebab, olives & feta, moussaka. The lamb was excellent with good flavor, tender & moist, accompanied by a tsatsiki that was excellent. I can recommend this dish. The Moussaka had good flavor with a too-heavy handed with the cinnamon. All of the hot dishes were served barely warm, not hot. The chicken (kebab) had "gone off" and we could not eat it--the chef in the group returned it but the waitress insisted that there was nothing wrong with it. The babaganoush was not recognizable as babaganoush--heavy herbal flavor and green color, no smoky taste and the eggplant flavor was missing. The hummus was of very smooth texture but very bland/unseasoned. The olives were partly sliced black olives from a can and Greek olives (not kalamatas). The feta was creamy and not particularly tangy, crumbly, or sharp as is customary with feta. The dolmas were water logged so had apparently been boiled rather than steamed. Went there for wedding cake tasting, it was part of our package. The owner comes out, clears the table & states another couple is here also for a tasting. We sit and 15 minutes later he comes with our samples. Mediocre at best, we had red velvet, lemon and white cake. He gave us a sample of the buttercream frosting, it tasted waxy. The cakes were one step above a twinkie. He never came back to check on us, he was too busy with the other couple. We got up and left, and he still didnt attempt to stop us. There are better bakeries in the area, dont consider giving them business. read more

I used them as my wedding cake vendor last year and they were the nicest people ever. I found them cause they were tied to my wedding venue and I have to tell you they were the tastiest and nicest of all. Their location is a bit rundown but it does ot reflect the quality of thei product. All their cakes are delicious especially the red velvet with cream cheese filling. That's what we had for our wedding cake. I went back again this year to order a smaller version of it for our anniversary. When I spoke with one of the owners he was so glad to hear we loved their service and that we were coming back to purchase more that he gave us a discount! Cannot get over how nice they are. I can't even imagine how this place has even 3.5 stars. The owner is a rude jerk - about as unfriendly as one can get and the girl that "works" the front register is never around, totally useless and clueless. The new Greek food is average at best and takes forever to get. Given how many great Mediterranean restaurants are in the area, this place is definitely not worth dealing with the jerk that owns the place (and I'd use much worse language if this wasn't online). read more

Horrible food! We tried a variety of appetizers. Spanakopitas were alright... Lots of unchopped spinach and not enough cheese so the result was an uneven taste. The hummus was fine and tasted like any other store bought type. The tabbouleh was anything BUT tabbouleh. It was a cup of bulgur that was the wrong size, parsley was used as a garnish and the tomatoes were missing....so it was basically onions and bulgur....soggy mess. read more

I've been coming to this bakery for years and I absolutely love the cupcakes. They have always been consistent and delicious. Usually I get mostly chocolate but I have to mix in a few of the vanilla cake as well because they offset each other so well. I think the best part about them is the frosting though. They have pretty much nailed the buttercream frosting and that's what makes or breaks it for me. read more

Delicious cakes and incredible service! I needed a cake for a dinner party last minute on Memorial Day Monday. Pastries by Nancy is officially closed on Monday. But Sean was there working on a special order and let me come in. You should know that whenever they are working on Monday, the door is open. You won't see the full selection, but you're welcome to anything available. I picked up a large Red Velvet cake for the party and 5 small cakes to give to friends. The total came to a very reasonable $87. While he customized my cakes, adding flowers and names, Sean told me about a few things that set their cakes apart. (1) The red velvet is a traditional Southern recipe made with tons of cocoa, which makes it extra rich. (2) The Bavarian cream is made in-house and is the best in LA (unlike most bakeries who buy it in pails because it is so time consuming and expensive to make). (3) The chocolate ganache cake is made with Belgian chocolate. Most of the bakery's business comes from special orders from country clubs and wedding parties. Because of this their standards are exceptionally high. I can't wait to order a cake for my Christmas party. The difficulty will be choosing which one of the amazing flavors to go with. I have been ordering cakes from Pastries by Nancy for more than eight years. It's been my go to bakery for birthdays and special occasions. Six years ago we where having a quincenera for my daughter and so I knew exactly where to go to order her cake. We made an appointment to do a cake tasting and we where so surprised on how good all the flavors we had not yet tried where! We had a hard time choosing a flavor! We ended up ordering their red velvet three tire cake. My daughter wanted to design her cake so she drew a picture on how she wanted it to look and they made it exactly how she wanted! So Fast forward six years later I'm ordering a red velvet cake for her "21"birthday! Pastries by Nancy has always been consistent in the flavor of their cakes and are alway so friendly! I will continue to order my cakes from here! I know years down the line I will be ordering my daughter wedding cake from here also! read more

It's always a difficult choice.....Buy a cake here or at Pattycakes? Altadena has two of Southern California's best cake bakeries in it. The chocolate cake here with the cream filling and chocolate ganache frosting is probably the best most heavenly decadent experience one can have while clothed. The cake was setup crooked. It looked the like leaning tower of pizza. The employee who set up the cake admitted it was tilted towards one side. I couldn't take pictures to the wedding cake. I am saddened at some of these reviews and how it can harm this business. But hopefully my review will be helpful, as it is a place you do not want to miss. We were given a few options with our cakes at the Altadena country club. My husband and I visited 3. One try to sell us a story of how she went to school in Europe..blah blah and we one tried 3pieces of cake., anything else was additional. Cakes were to sweet and she kept emphasizing on fondant, which we are not a fan of. Next we met with another place that was booked 2 appointment at the same time, limited tasting and the lady and the other couple was right in front of you while we were trying to make a decision. Last but not least we came to cakes by Nancy. From the get go my husband and I felt welcomed. We were served really good coffee, tasted several selections of cake. Sean explained the difference between fondant and buttercream and many other things that we didn't know about cakes. We ate so much cake and coffee that day. Yummy!!! He also left us alone while we talked about it, didn't feel rushed. Last but not least we had different layers in our wedding cake. Fresh strawberries, chocolate and marble. My guest thought that our cake was fondant...it wasn't!! The buttercream was amazing! All our guest complimented us on our wedding cake. I loved it and so did my guest. My first taste of a Pastries By Nancy cake was at a friend's wedding. Upon seeing the beautifully decorated cake, my friend and I couldn't believe that it was done with buttercream and not fondant. Then when it came to tasting it, I had not one slice but two! First I had the white cake with Bavarian cream and fresh strawberries, then a slice of the chocolate cake with bananas. Both were delicious!! When it came time for my sister's wedding and she asked for suggestions, I immediately thought of this place. We went together for the cake tasting and other than having a bit of difficulty finding the bakery (it's situated in the corner of a tiny shopping plaza), it was a pleasant experience, no hassles, no pressure. My sister was able to get exactly what she wanted both in taste and design. And on her wedding day, we didn't have to worry about the cake at all. They came and set everything up right on schedule so that there was a beautiful cake for the reception and it was at just the right temperature for cutting and eating (I didn't even know this was a detail to worry about. My husband and I ordered our wedding cake from here through our venue, the Altadena Country Club. We knew we would book them during our tasting because all of the cake was absolutely delicious. The hardest part was deciding which one! Shaun was very helpful and did not push us to book with him right away. He suggested we even go on more tastings first. In the process of looking for a small wedding cake we were asked to try Pastries by Nancy. I was contacted quickly, but when I described what we were looking for I was promptly told that I wouldn't want that, and so began the downfall. I asked if we could taste the cake prior to ordering, I wanted to be sure we were happy with the baker. The company wasn't keen on doing a tasting. Not that we wanted a full tasting, just a cupcake or something to try so we knew that the cake would be what we wanted. So we took matters into our own hands and my fiance bought a small round that was the flavor and somewhat the frosting we wanted. That night we had our own tasting, and I am so glad we did. Sadly, the cake was without flavor and super dry. The frosting had little flavor as well, but was all sugar, no depth. So now we begin again. Pastries by Nancy created my wedding cake in May 2011. Having a beautiful cake that tasted wonderful was really important to me. Shaun at Pastries by Nancy gave me both! I enjoyed a very nice cake tasting with three of my friends months before the wedding and made my choices -- white cake with cream filling and lemon with lemon cream filling. My wedding designer asked for a mix of square and round layers frosted with butter cream frosting. The layers were decorated perfectly and the cake was the perfect compliment to our wedding decor but more importantly tasted great and was the perfect dessert for our wedding dinner. Guests at our wedding still talk about how good our cake was and we loved our cake so much, we ate the top layer when we got back from our honeymoon and ordered a new top layer to enjoy on our anniversary! I've ordered cakes for other occasions from Pastries by Nancy and have always been pleased and always had guests share how pretty the cake we shared was and how delicious it tasted.
