However the food was excellent! I loved the fresh lump crab appetizer. I tried the trout and also had a few bites of the NY strip. The steak was cooked perfectly and the fries that came out with it were yummy but did get cold fast. The trout was so fresh, not fishy at all, and very light even paired with the lemon butter it came with. The green beans with the trout were also good. However the standout had to be the profiteroles. Sooo yummy especially with the chocolate on top! I have to admit French cuisine in this area has been my least favorite but Pastis didn't disappoint and exceeded my expectations. Myself and two friends met for dinner on a cold Wednesday night. Pastis was full and vibrant. The hostess and wait staff were friendly and attentive. The wine and menu options can be somewhat overwhelming but the waiter was patient with us and answered all our questions. We ordered the Tuna Tartare, scallops, crab and avocado and escargot (which only my friend ate) to start and everything was delicious. The tuna was exceptional. The tables around us had the onion soup which looked amazing and I plan to go back just for that the next time. Next my friends both ordered the Lobster Frites which they said was wonderful. I ordered the Filet and couldn't stop eating until it was gone. It was cooked and seasoned perfectly. We had several drinks a piece and enjoyed them but make sure you read the descriptions closely as they can be a bit strong. For dessert I got the seasonal eggnog milkshake. I love eggnog but it was a perfect mix as it wasn't too rich and the texture of the milkshake was just right. Would definitely recommend it unless you are lactose intolerant. lol. Second the ambiance really gives a NYC vibe and really feels higher class. The only thing I have to say wasn't the best was the portion sizes were a bit on the small size. I had this place on my list for a little bit so it was a treat to try it for restaurant week. They provide complimentary bread, of note, it isn't warm, but it is soft. They have 3 mocktails. I had one made with grapefruit and it was tasty. Now for dinner. Appetizer-I started with the crab and avocado salad. I enjoyed making wraps with the lettuce. 5/5 Entree- I had the mussels and fries. I was thoroughly embarrassed when I showed up to the restaurant only to learn that I had accidentally booked the reservation at the NYC location. But the hosts were extremely gracious and more than willing to accommodate me and my friends even though it was a Friday! The service was super friendly and attentive. The outdoor seating is super charming! I loved all my drinks, but a special shoutout to the petit pickle cocktail, something I didn't even know I needed in my life. I ordered the scallops and they were delicious, but I did feel like they weren't as filling as I had expected for the price. We really enjoyed Pastis. To set expectations appropriately, I don't think it's heading for a Michelin star, and it's not the cheapest, but the food and service were great and we look forward to returning. Food - we started with the steak tartare, and then had mussels and the NY Strip. The steak tartare was everything I'd want in that dish, and a great portion for a starter -- it even came with a little salad. The mussels were flavorful (good, not spectacular), but we really loved the steak. So many restaurants don't seem to be using salt lately, but Pastis gave us a well seasoned, perfectly cooked steak and it was a treat! For dessert, we got the citron tarte and it was delicious -- like your favorite slice of key lime pie with a meringue on top. Our cocktails were also very good! Service -- our server was very attentive, never leaving my water glass empty, never making me wait to order another drink, etc. Food came out extremely fast (almost too fast). This place has no shortage of staff, and everyone was exceedingly polite. Atmosphere - Pastis seems to have a few too many tables in any given section of their restaurant. It's like they realized they had a good Washington Post review and tried to sneak in more seating, making everything feel cramped. We were seated outside, at a particularly tiny table, right next to the server's stand (maybe 1 foot from it?). So, if we said literally anything, our server would hear. It felt a bit awkward. There are lovely planter boxes lining the tables, which look nice, but I also had plants poking me all night. So, maybe the atmosphere could use some work. read more

I snagged an early dinner reservation with a friend. We were both looking forward to dining at Pastis and were so excited to have gotten a table. We were seated along the back wall in a cozy booth/table. We started with two appetizers, the French million soup and a Caesar salad. Tje French onion soup is a crowd favorite and is served in a large soup cup it was bubbling with a cheese topping and looked amazing, my friend was so happy with her choice. The salad I ordered was a larger portion and everything tasted so fresh it was the perfect starter. For entrees my friend went with the steak sandwich and I ordered the bar steak. The sandwich was a huge portion (but had too much bread) and it was served with fries. The bar steak was the perfect portion and was prepared medium to my liking. It was seasoned to perfection and also served with fries. We also both ordered a cocktail, an old fashioned and espresso martini. Unfortunately, we didn't save room for dessert. Pastis is a quintessential French bistro, without needing to travel all the way to France. Unlike other parts of Union Market, your chances of finding street parking even during the weekend are fair. They have a covered, outdoor seating area with space heaters, but the ambiance inside is much much nicer. In fact, the bar area reminded me of the hustle and bustle of Le Diplomate. They have an extensive menu of cocktails, which was our choice, and we didn't really wander into their wine selection. Something that I found odd was the lack of descriptors for the cheese plate, nor any word from our server. If you love French onion soup, definitely get it. Loved the red winey broth, although the overall plate was on the saltier end. Frites are the original deal. The supreme burger was spot on, and the steak frites were juicy. Very spacious yet buzzing on a weekend. Reasonably priced in the overall scheme of DC dining these days. read more

Wonderful family dinner while visiting DC. A highlight of our trip. Everyone loved what they ordered and great service.

I visited for Mother's Day brunch and the food was very good, the venue busy but pleasant, and the service a bit lacking. We had the Eggs Benedict ($18, two pieces plus some smashed potatoes), Crepe Complete ($23), Profiteroles ($13, four pieces), and the Eclairs ($11, one chocolate, one coffee). To drink, just the Spritz Royale ($15). I also had some complementary bread, after asking for it. All of the flavors, temperatures, and presentations were on point. The benedict received high praise for the soft English muffin (house made, according to our waiter), hollandaise sauce, and smashed potatoes. We originally asked for the benedict bread to be on the side, but were told modifications were limited because they were so busy; fair enough, not a big deal, but it also makes me picture them churning out benedicts like a buffet... not exactly a premium association. The crepe complete was very good although I'm not sure why it costs so much more than the other brunch entrees (most are ~$18); I almost didn't get it due to price, but I love crepes. The profiteroles and eclairs were also very good. I slightly preferred the profiteroles at La Grande Boucherie, which I visited earlier this week, but they were also $5 more expensive. The spritz had a very nice grapefruit flavor. It was Mother's Day, so I expected the restaurant to be packed and service to be a little basic, but I also know Starr restaurants run a tight ship so I still expected very good service. It didn't quite hit the mark. We were celebrating a birthday as well as Mother's Day. The hosts acknowledged this, but our waiter did not, neither verbally nor with a candle in the dessert. Service was generally sparse, but food came out quickly enough. I noticed a table next to us get a small to-go treat (three mini macarons) with their check, but we didn't get one with ours. A few minutes after paying, just as we were getting up, a food runner came over with "gratis" French fries. We were puzzled and politely refused, and actually had to insist twice to the server that it must be a mistake and we didn't want them; of course, it was supposed to go to the table beside us. Then, as we left, the waiter asked us to hold on a second, and got the macarons for us -- without us asking, but still very much as an after thought. That's three faux pas at the end of the meal, which is more than I can overlook, even during a very busy service. The restaurant is very pretty inside and larger than I expected. The vibe and decor is similar to Le Diplomate, although they don't have an outdoor patio, only a streatery. read more

With an interior that is well curated, elegant, inviting, and slightly rustic, this spot offers some truly incredible food packed with freshness and flavor presented beautifully. In addition the coffee and pastries were all fabulous. Stopped in to Pastis for a date night and the experience did not disappoint. From first meeting our waiter, Mo, we could tell it was going to be a great evening. It was restaurant week but that didn't change anything about the experience, just make picking from the menu a little easier. We each got an appetizer (the escargot and crab & avocado salad), the bar steak steak frites, and then the wonderful creme brûlée and chocolate mousse. All of the food was served perfectly cooked, generous portions, and was so delicious. Mo was so attentive but nowhere close to over doing it. My family and I ate at Pastis over the weekend and loved it. There was a glitch in the Resy reservation system but the hosts were very nice and accommodating and were able to get me and my family a table right away. We saw in the back dining room in one of the semi-circle read leather booths. These were primo spots and a great choice for a larger group (or in our case, two parents and our twins). We went for Sunday brunch, which is a small and pretty basic brunch menu. My partner got eggs Benedict, which he devoured while I got a gruyere omelet. It was great. Both dishes came with a side of potatoes that I scarfed down since I was very hungry. Note, that you need to request bread if you want that before your meal. They won't just bring it. Like Le Diplomate, the bread comes from nearby Bread Alley in the Union Market area. It was such good bread, we walked over to the bakery and bought a loaf to take home! The spot is kid friendly since it's loud inside (scream all you want kids, not hearing it!), and the server also brought over crayons and coloring pages of the Eiffel Tower. Our daughter had the French Onion Soup (such elevated tastes!) while our son had the Jamon Buerre, basically a plate of ham, butter and 2 pieces of French bread. It's super basic (like that's it!). It was perfect for our son. I'm taking a mini-hiatus from booze right now but the cocktails looked awesome. Once I'm back on the wagon, this will be a cocktail stop for sure! read more

Overpriced and underwhelming. The service was nice and my cocktail (The Eiffel Sour) was quite good, but my group found that the overall experience was otherwise disappointing. We started with the calamari and the pierogis. The calamari was good but the pierogis came with 3 for $15, which felt very stingy for a dish consisting of potato and dough. For mains, we had the scallops, the beef bourguignon, and the Moroccan lamb. The scallops were good but again, a bit small. My boyfriend's bourguignon was served atop macaroni, which felt wrong. That shape of pasta is one we generally associate with children's food, and we felt that potatoes would have been a more natural choice. My Moroccan lamb was okay, but over salted and I did not love the side or the sauces. The couscous was not very fluffy and the flavors of the sauces just were not quite right. Finally, we got a side of glazed carrots for $9. We were expecting something nice, tender, and heirloom, but instead got standard carrots cut into think, undercooked coins and covered in a strange buttery dill sauce. Overall the ambiance was nice (although the ladies room was dirty, with rolls of TP strewn across the floor) the drinks were good, and the food was mostly acceptable. If you are not too picky, perhaps you will like it for the ambiance, but my group is not keen to return. read more

The calamari, mac and cheese, and French onion soups were all excellent. The complimentary bread was also very good. The steak frites, scallops, and pot pie were good, but nothing special. The inside of the restaurant is dark and has similar vibes to Tatte Bakery. To start off, the free bread portion amount is very minimal and nothing compared to any french restaurant I've been to before... 3 slices of sourdough and some butter. They do give more refills if you request but I can't help wanting more variety when compared to their other Le Diplomat restaurant - I'm nitpicking but something to keep in mind. Our waiter was super attentive and always checked in on us. The other wait staff also provided additional service (cleaning dishes, refilling water, checking on us, etc.). NY Strip Steak had a nice char crust and cooked/seasoned great. Duck confit portion was juicy and the sauce complimented it well. Chocolate mousse dessert is great for chocolate lovers and was creamy. I wish there was a sponge cake component to it because it was basically whipped chocolate cream and mini crunchy chocolate pearls. read more

Stopped by Pastis as a walk-in on a Sunday afternoon. Wow this place was busy! Around 1pm there were no tables available for walk-in seating but they said they could mark us down for a table outside in about an hour. It was a beautiful day in Union Market so why not. An hour later our outdoor table was available but we ended up opting for the bar instead. The bar staff was friendly and the brunch cocktails are good. I haven't been to their NY location so this was my first time. It's nice that they don't pack the dining room like sardines but it did get busy by the time we left round 9. Food was very good, the leeks vinaigrette was interesting, never had leeks as an appetizer like that but it worked. The escargot were so good with crusty bread to soak up all that yummy garlic oil. My friend and I shared a steak with sautéed spinach and finished with two desserts, coffee ice cream and the best chocolate mousse with chocolate pearls. I came here for a Sunday brunch a few weeks ago and the service was great. They were very attentive to my group of 6 and especially appreciated the quick service with clearing our plates. The brunch menu was pretty limited, but they have a lot of French classics. Since I listed on the latter half of brunch, I was feeling lunch and got a cheeseburger and fries. The burger was good and the fries were crispy. They had pretty good cocktails and non alcoholic options as well that were delicious. I couldn't complain overall, but nothing really stood out either. Service was 3.5 outta 5, our server went MIA several times. I ate the beef bourguignon, let's just say, why did I have macaroni noodles? Very very dry meat, not juicy at all, no sauce. Compared to Le Dip, Le Dip is 10x better. My partner liked the lobster frites, very good, salty but good. The prime rib was rare as rare could be, in my opinion it was not edible. The cocktails were very good, and refreshing. Happy we tried this place out but I'd personally go to the Le Diplomate over this place. We had an amazing first time at Pastis. It feels like Le Diplomate's slightly upgraded sibling. First I'll start with the food. We shared three appetizers and four entrees for four of us and it was plenty. The calamari were perfect and a nice addition to the menu. Both the shrimp cocktail and escargots were on point and very similar to what you'd get at Le Diplomate. It was fantastic to be able to choose between three cuts for the steak frites, our party tried the New York Strip and the Bar Steak and they were perfect! Service was amazing! I'm usually afraid to try a restaurant the first few months that it's been open since things can still be working themselves out. But the service was flawless. The ambiance was also lovely. I had a late dinner here last night with three friends. In my almost 79 years of life, I don't think that I've ever had such spectacular service as I did last night. Our waiter, Tobias, was exemplary in his skills. It was amazing to see him continually refilling our water and wine glasses while at the same time seeming invisible. The food was equally wonderful. We started the evening by sharing a platter of escargot and a plate of calamari - we use the fabulous bread to dip into the sublime garlicy butter sauce, I had the salad Nicoise which was seasoned to perfection. Starr does it again. Pastis is the real deal. As a Union Market neighborhood resident, we've made this place our Happy Hour go to. The bar is the place to be and the bartenders are extremely creative - in fact, order off the menu for your next libation. Though they don't really offer Happy Hour deals, some frites, oysters and martinis should do the trick. I'd recommend this spot for brunch over dinner if you're opting for a sit down experience. Why?
