It has that comfortable café vibe that makes you want to linger with a colada in hand--and that's exactly what we did. We started with a colada and toasted Cuban bread, but the real highlight was discovering that this place offers some traditional items you rarely see anymore. Cheese croquettes! Yes, you read that right. Not just the standard ham or chicken you find at most spots--this bakery brings back the classic cheese croqueta I used to get as a kid. Major nostalgia points. On top of that, they had a spinach croquette that was absolutely delicious. But what really blew me away was the spinach-stuffed pastry. And when I say "stuffed," I mean it. tl;dr for delicious, authentic, and affordable pastelitos, look no further than this unpretentious Little Havana bakery Pastelitos -- flaky Cuban puff pastries traditionally filled with guava, cream cheese, or beef -- are an essential, all-day component of Miami food culture. However, quality and affordability are sorely lacking in most tourist-heavy neighborhoods. So when my family planned a self-guided food tour through Little Havana, finding a solid Cuban bakery was one of our priorities -- and a spot named Pastelmania seemed to be a safe bet for both traditional and unique pastelito varieties. Indeed, this bakery was awarded Miami's best pastelito by the Miami New Times. The small, standalone shack is about a half-mile off Calle Ocho proper. The vibrant outside walls are equipped with ruby-red awnings and painted with eye-catching wavy lines. The inside space is weakly air-conditioned and minimally decorated. The whitewashed walls have only an Argentina flag and a futbol jersey. Three dedicated bakery displays are filled with cakes, pastries, and -- of course -- pastelitos. The menu is painted onto a chalkboard behind the counter. The only sounds are clanging from the kitchen, ringing of the cash register, and ripping of bakery paper. The staff and clientele exclusively speak Spanish with thick, Cuban dialects. We ordered a Pastelito de Guayaba, a Pastelito de Espinica, a Croqueta de Queso, and a Colada. The warm, flaky, slightly chewy pastry was brushed with sugar. Both the sweet guava and the savory spinach pastelitos were excellent, and the rich, salty croqueta packed a ton of flavor. Meanwhile, the Cuban espresso was as strong as it was affordable. Service was friendly and efficient, and our entire order ran us just $5. Pastelmania was a highlight of our visit to Little Havana, and it is well worth a visit if you are in the neighborhood. If I had more time (and appetite), I would be sure to work my way through the remainder of Pastelmania's pastry lineup. read more

Items Order: Pasteleria $1.60 10/10 Guava Cheese, 7/10 Cheese Roll, 10/10 Spinach Cheese - Pastries were very buttery and flaky as they should be. Fillings were perfect in terms of ratio with the crust. Guava flavor was solid, spinach was actually the best filling, and cheese roll was cream cheese not like portos cheese so it was just ok. 9/10 Empanada $3.50 - Very large size packed with meat! The meat was also juicy and empanada shell was crispy and not super oily. While in Florida I had the pleasure of picking up some fantastic bites here at Pastelmania! They have a great variety of pastelillos, empanadas, croquetas, Cuban sandwiches and pastries. And amazing coffee! We ordered our Cubans with everything, not realizing that included ketchup, so that threw me off a bit but the flavor was good. The croquetas were really good but the pastelillo de carne were so freaking good! Honestly I wish I would've ordered like 10 of them! We took a box of pastries to take back to our hotel for later and my niece, daughter and sister devoured them so I can just assume the were great because nothing was left. The dine in area is not very big at all, but it's very clean. Very small bakery, definitely feels like a local place, with very hospitable ladies serving your empanadas and baked goods. Tried a couple of the sweet stuff like the guava with cheese, couple chocolate bakery items, and the flan (favorite for me). Also tried the chicken and beef empanadas, very heavy but tasty, I don't think ordering 2-3 empanadas is a good idea, but if I were to go back, I'd take the beef one. Service was pretty quick too, especially given the size of shop, and there were only 4-5 tables inside so keep that in mind. read more

"Don't judge a book by its cover" came to mind after I tried Pastelmania! The bakery is small and isn't much to look at inside or outside, but WOW do they know what they're doing. For starters, this place has all the classics that you most likely had at some party hosted by old school Cubans--bocaditos (small sandwiches with a delicious ham paste), cod croquettes and ham croquettes, and the meat inside the meat pie is appropriately seasoned. They also had an amazing looking Brazo Gitano! It looked exactly like my aunt used to make. For those unfamiliar, it's a rolled cake with guava jam and topped with coconut and capuchino cones. It's a showstopper! It's worth mentioning that the pastries are larger than you get at most Cuban bakeries. I'd describe them as being at least 20% larger. Great value. The Cuban bread was also a standout for me. So airy and light. It toasted up great in my oven. read more

The service was quick and the ladies who attended me were super patient and friendly despite my large order. I ordered: 1 pan cubano 7 croquetas de jamón 1 colada 1 cafe con leche 1 batido de mango 2 pastelitos de guava 2 empanadas de carne 1 pastelito de queso 1 media noche 1 pan con bistec and spent a total of $56. I went around 8am on a Sunday, and it wasn't too busy. They also spoke a little English which was helpful. I went to El brazo Fuerte yesterday, so comparing some of the food to each other: Guavaba queso: the filling was very similar to the other, but Brazos pastry was more croissant-like which I appreciated. Queso: this was just cream cheese and lacking compared to the other pastries. I wouldn't get this again. Senorita: the layers were so much flakier, so not sure if Brazo's was just older. Girlfriend liked the custard at Brazo's more though. Quatro leches: I like the dulce de Leche at Brazo's way more, but this was still good. Ham and Spinach croquettes: the ham was so good, it was minced within the cheese like filling, and not overly salty. I'd get this again. The Spinach was tasty too but a bit too dense. When we stopped in, there was a constant flow of local clients. A good sign! They ham croquettes for one of my husband's favorites of all time. Fire! They were crispy and warm and oozy! One of the better breakfasts I've ever had. And it was only $5. Seriously, this should be a must when you're in Miami. I ordered the guava pastelito (pastry), huevos con jamon (eggs and ham), and a cortadito coffee. The pastry was the most fresh and flaky and spewed this sweet flavorful guava jelly. The cortado wasn't too sweet, which was a nice change from the other Cuban coffee's I've had this trip. And the ham in the eggs was delectably sweet like my grandmas on Easter. Unbelievable really. After hearing some good things we wanted to try thr pastelitos from Pastelmania. But before I begin I'd like to state that everyone has their thought of what a proper cuban pastelito should be. To me that is from Vicky's bakery in Hialeah and yes particularly that location. I prefer them light and fluffy. They shouldn't crumble into pieces like if you were eating a nature valley bar. And there should be a good quality and amount of guava, cheese or meat inside. With that said I think the pastelitos here seemed a little greasy and lacking in flavor. I wasn't wowed as I was truly hoping for. Same for their homemade croquettas. I wasn't impressed. I did try a flan/cheesecake and it was amazing. I would go back for that alone but unfortunately pastelmania's pastelitos were lackluster to say the least. At least that was my opinion. Those were some freakin delicious potato balls, and the empanadas tasted like "home" I'm not Cuban or any form of Hispanic. But you could taste the love that was put into it. Incredible guava and cheese pastelitos. Cheese is sharp and tangy and pairs beautifully with the sweet guava. Pastry is incredibly flaky. We also tried a pico de queso with crystallized sugar on top. I used to live in Miami pre-Andrew and developed quite a fondness (aka weakness) for pastelitos. It feels as if they are becoming harder to find, especially ones made from scratch rather than frozen pastry dough... but I never give up the quest. My spouse was in Miami for the Superbowl and Pastelmania popped up as the closest option for a pastelitos pit stop on the trip back home. The bakery was described as busy; it's servers as nice and helpful. Carne, guava and queso pastelitos as well as a few jamon croquettes made the journey to the west coast. I was thrilled to receive these Miami-made pastelittos. The carne ones were on the smaller size. The pastry was good with the required sweetness across the top. it wasn't tough like some pastry and yes, it could have been housemade. I admit i was disappointed with the filling. It just didn't have a lot of flavor. If Pastelmania kicked up the cuban spices, it would have been one of the best pastelitos de carne I have had in several years. Then there were the guava pastelitos. They were good.. the filling very sweet. I prefer guava y queso pastelitos because the cheese helps cut the sweetness of the guava paste. My girls loved the guava pastelitos though so that made me happy. Finally we tried the cigar-shaped queso pastelitos.. These were very good. The pastry- wrapped cheese filling had just a bit of sweetness ... a great bite. The true surprise was the last minute add of jamon croquettes. These were just a little larger than most, clearly housemade and full of flavor. Wow. The ham was soft and smoky, the breading very light. I am craving one as I write this. Overall, the pastelitos are good. Queso is the best and I am sure guava and queso would be excellent. Add a bit more spice to the filling and the carne one would be a top choice. When on vacation, it sometimes can be a bit of a pain especially when looking for something to eat and you new to the area. I ended up in Miami for a few days prior to a family cruise and as we looked on Yelp for places to eat, we found a few spots except for this one which was odd especially after our experience. As we finished out first lunch in "Little Havana", which is what this area is called. I walked to our rental when I came across this wonderful hidden gem. First impression is not bad. The place was a bit dated, but that's what gave it its character of being in your typical pastry shop in Cuba or Puerto Rico where I'm from. We were greeted and immediately asked if we needed help with our order. We were so caught off guard by their offerings that we went for what we knew; some guava and sweet cheese pastries. I added a coffee (Cortado) for myself and my wife (Cafe con Leche) to surprise her since she stepped away to another store to pick up some other items that we needed for our trip. When I got back to our rental, I sat down and bit into this wonderfully flaky crusty pastry that from beginning to end was full of wonderful guava flavor that finish with the slight tartness of the cheese. I was taken back to my childhood when I would see my aunt in PR make these from scratch. It was the most pleasant feeling of goodness inside. I pulled away from my flash back to childhood for a sip of the coffee I had and it was just as good. The coffee was a perfectly made Cortado, which is made with dark roast espresso beans. There was no bitterness, just the sweet notes of the coffee as it helped cleanse my palette for my next bite of the pastry. We returned Saturday and Sunday morning before our departure for breakfast and it was just as good as it was the first time. They have a breakfast menu that's built around their Cuban bread loafs. The bread is toasted just enough o give you a great crunch outside while leaving the inside soft and warm. Try their Tostado with Café con Leche combo and you'll get what I'm trying to convey. It will be missed during our cruise. Upon returning back from the cruise, we had some time to kill so we returned back. The shop owner remembered us and asked us about our trip a we ordered our final meal in Miami, which if I haven't mentioned is very good on the wallet. You can get more here to eat than what your local arches or crowns can offer. In all, the best experience food experience in Miami was here. The people were great the atmosphere was awesome, the prices were great, and the pastries will have me coming back every time I come and visit. Coming from Southern California, the only Cuban bakery I've been to before visiting Pastelmania was the ever so popular Porto's. Arrived during brunch time on a Saturday with a voracious appetite. (9/25/2021) I definitely had to try their pastries and croquetas to compare back home. Ordered pastelitos de guayaba y queso, pastelitos de guayaba, pastelitos de coco, pastelitos de espinacas, an assortment of croquetas (jamon, espinacas, bacalao), beef empanada, chicken empanada, dos cortadito, dos batido de Mango. The courteous blue eyed, blond haired lady that took our order was very patient with my limited Spanish speaking ability. The pastries were flaky and had been brushed with a sweet egg wash prior to being baked; tasted really weird and off on the spinach pastry. They also tasted like they've been made with margarine instead of high quality butter. Both empanadas fillings were bland and dry. Definitely in need of spices and/or salsa to make it taste better. The croquetas had a gummy paste texture almost like the consistency of the glue sticks used in elementary school. The worse tasting of the three croquetas was the spinach. Cortadito and batido de mango were alright. Rating: 2.75 stars Prefer Porto's over Pastelmania. Lots of better places for croquetas in Miami. We didn't finish our big box of pastries/croquetas, kinda regret ordering so much and spending $43. My Puerto Rican Uncle would have shook his head and say, "your eyes is bigger than your stomach."
