Had another amazing meal with friends! The service was excellent and accommodations were made/explained to my gluten free guest. They have a special menu with ingredients and possibilities for food sensitivities. Started off with their amazing biscuit...a meal in itself. Crunchy on outside and flaky moist on the inside, served with butter drizzled with some honey. Then served 2 appetizers, asparagus fries and smoked trout ceviche tostadas...both delicious! Next was an arugula beet salad, followed by the sea scallops and lamb breast. So flavorful and marvelous.
An amazing restaurant with even greater service. Attentive from the moment you walk in to the moment you walk out. Had to try Nancy's Buttery Buttermilk Biscuit and it did not disappoint. Golden and toasty on the outside but soft and fluffy on the inside. The tomato truffle butter the scallops were in was rich in flavor. The rice custard was interesting with its dry pudding consistency but paired well with the poached lettuce and onions. We also had a couple of salads that were very fresh and delicious. They also have a great list of wine bottles and decent amount of wine glass options for great prices.
Lovely dinner at Passionfish - the vibe is a modern, cozy, local dinner spot in the heart of Pacific Grove. The seafood is sustainably sourced and feels curated so that you aren't overwhelmed with options. We started with the calamari which was lightly breaded (my preferred way) plated on a tangy citrus sauce with an herb salad. We also shared the buttermilk biscuit which had a buttery crunch on the outside and was so fluffy and buttery in the inside. For entrees, I had the sea scallops which were cooked perfectly and delicious poached lettuce. My husband had the lamb which lived up to the name of being spoonable and so tender. We ended the meal with a light panna cotta that came with candied ginger.
Still thinking of Passionfish...from far away! Came here for our anniversary that we were spending in Monterey Bay, and this was easily one of the best meals we've had! Their menu features mostly fish-based dishes, but we decided to go with their specials of the night - an arctic char cooked in a matcha beurre sauce, and their slow-cooked lamb. Both dishes were cooked to absolute perfection- the lamb was so tender and flavorful without ANY hint of gaminess, easily being the BEST I ever had. The arctic char was juicy and tender, but with the most perfect crispy crust that had no hint of being burnt or soggy. We also ordered their signature biscuit, which is freshly made in house and a delicious, comforting appetizer! Highly recommend checking them out for very detail-oriented, caring service, incredibly well executed dishes, fairly priced wines, and an unforgettable dinner experience!
Delicious food and impeccable service. Perfect spot to take your SO to - intimate summates this place perfectly. The lamb was SUPER tender and all the server's wine recommendations were a hit with our entrees. I will say the chamomile crème brûlée that we got was a little mid - didn't really get the hint of chamomile in there - but the wine combo (Kiralyudvar) was insanely rich and delicious.
A charming restaurant in a cool building and nice decor. Very friendly and attentive service. The food was very good and not typical. I had the duck confit and got 2 large leg/thighs. So good! My husband loved his whole trout and my friend said the spoonsable lamb was melt in the mouth delicious.(He did feel the portions could have been a bit bigger.) We ended with the incredible banana bread pudding with banana ice cream. A very lovely dining experience!
My bf and I arrived right at opening ahead of our reservation and were promptly seated. It was really quiet and vibey initially since the restaurant was empty but the establishment quickly filled up - though it never got too noisy which we appreciated. Service was high quality and the server made us feel very welcome. My bf ordered the Duck Confit (4/5): Duck Confit was nearly perfect. While the sauce and potato cake were perfectly done (the sauce gave a tangy kick to otherwise heavy flavors) the cook of the duck was a tad more iffy. The skin was perfectly done and very crispy but the inside was tender at spots, falling off the bone when cutting it, and in other spots was kind of dry and chewy. Despite this we enjoyed the flavors and the portion size. I ordered the Sea Scallops (4/5): The sauce, rice pudding, and vegetables were delicious! The dish felt well balanced and all the different components worked well to come together into a coherent dish. However, one thing that we didn't enjoy was that a lot of the dish components were wet which meant there was a bit of liquid pooling on the plate and made the dish look a lot less appealing and eating it a bit more difficult. The scallops were also slightly overcooked but perfectly seasoned and seared. Overall this was a very solid dinner that left us pretty satisfied.
We had a lovely dinner here tonight. Passionfish is an upscale and elegant restaurant known for their seafood being sustainably sourced. We had made reservations in advance, which is highly recommended. We were warmly greeted at the door by the hostess, shown to our table and were given menus. Our waitress, Candace, came and introduced herself and informed us of this evening's special, which was the rack of lamb. We decided to start our meal with the fried calamari squid herb salad with spicy tangerine vinaigrette. We also ordered the Dungeness crab salad. We shared both of these items. We also decided to share their famous buttermilk biscuit. The calamari starter was so good. Cooked perfectly with a light crispy batter exterior. The tangerine vinaigrette was delicious with a bit of heat. The Dungeness crab salad was amazing. The ginger vinaigrette paired extremely well with the crab, avocado and arugula. This was our favorite item. I'd come back just for this salad. The buttermilk biscuit was warm and delicious with the honey butter they provided. One was enough to split. For our mains, we ordered the rack of lamb and the sea scallops entree. My husband loved the lamb but had a hard time cutting it with the plain silverware knife that was part of our place setting. We asked for a sharp knife but they don't usually provide those for their guests. Candace was able to find us a sharp knife which worked out great. My sea scallops were perfectly seared on the top and bottom and creamy in the middle. So delicious. I did not care for the sides at all. The poached lettuce, was one of my sides, was not palatable at all. I'm just not into hot soggy lettuce. The other side was a rice custard. It definitely was savory and custard like. I had an issue with the texture. The menu isn't huge. I only wish they had more options for the sides where we can choose what we'd like. We had excellent service by the wait staff. Our waters were constantly being topped off. We did glance at the dessert menu, but were too full to try anything. We will definitely come back again and make sure to make room for dessert.
This was my second time here. I love eating here when I'm craving an upscale seafood experience. Brought my son today as well and he probably the only teenager in the restaurant but we like our "fancy" meals. The food was delicious. I wasn't so sure if the poached lettuce worked but it was okay. We loved dessert and the tea we had was amazing! Service was friendly and welcoming. The place was packed and pretty close seating and I'm glad we had a reservation.
My partner brought me here for my birthday after a nice evening of staring at otters in the bay. The vibe is definitely retired bougie which I don't quite fit into but meant the ambience was very calm and low key. Like the ocean Rainbow trout was a step outside our typical picks. It was well deboned (only two small ones on the side) and well cooked. We unfortunately didn't like the cardamom flavour accompanying it Scallops are a MUST HAVE. They are expensive, almost $10 per scallop but they were excellently cooked, buttery but firm enough to sit on a fork and the rice custard was so good too The squash bisque was a bit watery for a bisque but provided a nice warm feeling coming in from the rainy outside We got recommended the biscuit and thought why not, $4 and it was a HIGH RETURN dish. Definitely get it yourself, it is soft and buttery honestly I'd get one per person They also gave me an ice cream for my birthday, while we ordered the chocolate torte it was overpowered by the passion fruit syrup. If that's your thing, go ahead.
I had a fabulous meal at Passionfish last night, after not eating there in a while. I've always liked the restaurant, but not quite as much as others did. In particular, I found the entrees a bit too spartan, the flavor often fell a bit short of what I was hoping for, even as I loved other aspects of the experience. Last night started with a biscuit that was remarkably good (I saw on the dessert menu the restaurant sells a make-your-own kit). I had a calamari appetizer that was notably tender, with the richness of the fried calamari balanced by a zingy citrus sauce. Entree was halibut that was well-cooked and with a satisfying combination of flavors; my only modest quibble was that halibut works particularly well as a thicker cut, and this piece was fairly thin. Plating/presentation was strong throughout, and especially for the halibut. All of this was paired with a Santa Cruz-area Pinot Noir by Ghostwriter, which wasn't on my radar, that had Old World characteristics that paired nicely with the food. Dessert was a chocolate sorbet, almost certainly produced with a pricey Pacojet, that was exceptionally creamy and rich despite being dairy free. Service was great; casual, helpful, mostly very responsive. There was a delay in getting our table ready, I presume because a prior party lingered. We were low-key about it, but the restaurant might have acknowledged it in some modest way, e.g. just having the server mention it again, or sending a shared appetizer out for the table as a gesture. Ambiance was lovely. Price was appropriate, and kudos to the restaurant for marking wine up far less than most do. Overall, based on last night's meal, Passionfish is a restaurant I'm happy to recommend enthusiastically.
So mant great eateries in the Pacific Grove area! Had a lovely dinner at Passionfish and was highly recommended by The Pisoni Family. The rating is probably closer to 4.5 stars vs 4 and only knock was due to the size of the scallop on the "scallop" appetizer and a bit of a disappointing florless chocolate cake dessert (not pictured as it was boxed up to go). Dont get me wrong it was delicious and had so many textural delights within the dish. Being a scallop appetizer though you'd expect the scallop to be a major component but in this case it was almost like an afterthought. The homemade bread was amazing and I can see why its so popular. Buttery goodness with nice texture on the outside and soft and fluffy on the inside. Finally, the duck confit was outstanding! A healthy portion of duck which just pulled right off the bone and the crispy skin was to die for! An awesome wine selection here from all over and seemed pretty reasonably priced compared to similar type of establishments. Service was top-notch and would go back in a heart beat.

First customers in the restaurant. Had 5pm reservations. The food was good with the exception of the beet salad. It was mushy the beets were over cooked and it was a HARD pass. The buttermilk biscuits I recommended one for each person at the table they were amazing. Ordered the scallop dish and the arctic char special. Both dishes were good. My biggest problem was the waiters cologne was offensive and waaaaaayyyyy too much, secondly it took 1.5 hrs for two people to have dinner no drinks. 15 mins just to be helped as the first and only people in the restaurant. The restaurants ambience was nice. Music not too loud I would say if the restaurant was busy the tables are extremely close. Maybe they had an off day, won't be returning. read more
4.5 stars rounded up to stars. The setting was slightly upscale without being stuffy. Both food and service were fantastic. Smoked trout ceviche tostaditas, cashew pesto, spicy salsa brava - although it was pretty good, I liked other dishes better. Fried california squid, herb salad, spicy tangerine vinaigrette - standard tasting. Beet salad, whipped gorgonzola dolce, yellow curry, golden chutney, pecans - refreshingly tasty. Good favor combination. Duck confit, honey reduction, smoked chile-potato cake, grilled broccolini - although it's a seafood restaurant, the duck confit was awesome. Duck was off-the-bone tender and moist. The honey reduction was very tasty. Sea scallops, tomato-truffle butter, poached lettuce, savory rice custard - the scallops were cooked to perfection. Panna Cotta - the desserts were priced very reasonably. Panna Cotta was creamy, silky and rich. Mud Pie - pretty standard tasting. Pretty impressive experience. Would definitely come back when I'm in the area again. read more
came in to this restaurant with a lot of demands. had a baby and two dogs, but we were welcomed with great food and amazing service. we had some decent salads and i was surprised by the feta. it had deep fried olives which were surprisingly good. the biscuits had an amazing texture that let you go hard with the butter spread i would suggest starting with them as wel i had the grilled shrimps as the main. it was a cassoulet and the seasoning was perfect. the shrimps were very generous and well cooked. their desserts are pretty solid but heavy. had the chocolate sorbet and it was quite large and rich. the service stood out to me. constantly refilled our waters and being patient with our orders. i absolutely want to come back to try their fish dishes. read more

Wow! Excellent food - if you like seafood and you're not afraid to try something different - this is a wonderful place to visit. My wife and I live in the area but have never visited. We ordered a couple of drinks, an appetizer, two of their tasty biscuits, two entrees, and dessert. The service was absolutely spectacular! Our server was very nice. She checked on us frequently and provided a couple of recommendations. She made sure we were satisfied with our meals and our glasses were never left empty. We spent $115 bucks - with a gracious tip - the experience was well worth it and I'm certainly going back to try their other dishes. Highly recommend visiting this place! All of our food was served hot and we didn't have to wait very long. The buttermilk biscuits were out of this world. Light, fluffy, and delicious. The halibut was excellent - the sauce was tangy and a little spicy, but not too spicy. The rainbow trout comes out whole - our server advised us prior to ordering - it was flaky and the sauce was delicious. The bread pudding was top notch. read more

While the atmosphere is subtle and may come off as underwhelming, the food here is amazing and is well worth the visit. We chose the scallops starter and it was the perfect combination of salty, sweet, creamy, and crunchy. You only get one scallop, but it is the most perfect scallop that you could hope for, so don't let the cost and quantity deter you. We also got Nancy's biscuit. Who is Nancy anyway? She's a wonderful woman who serves up a buttery, flaky, thick biscuit that is crunchy on the bottom and top, but pillowy soft in the middle so it's the best of both worlds... This is no Pillsbury or Grande's bullshit... this is Nancy's. Literally the only thing that could improve this biscuit would be some Maldon salt flakes on the butter. Just look it up. The Dungeness crab salad was smaller than expected, but packed mighty flavor into a perfect cylindrical display that was worth the $30. I've been hunting for the perfect opportunity to indulge in Dungeness crab on my California vacation and I am so happy I pulled the trigger at Passionfish. Like avocado? You're in luck. This crustacean is served atop a mattress of ripe avocado chunks. Ever heard of a breast of lamb? Ever heard of a spoonable breast of lamb? How about a spoonable 12 hour breast of lamb? Well, once again, Passionfish delivers. Beyond the succulent lamb, you will also find yourself pleased by a goat cheese sauce, which was sparingly drizzled atop while the breast of lamb was sitting amongst a chickpea stew, that emanated warm, Middle Eastern like flavors. Our hospitable waitress made sure to bring us a small carafe of additional goat cheese sauce, so we could truly make the most of our spoonable lamb dreams. After much consideration, we decided that we needed the mint and espresso mud pie. To alleviate any future confusion the following is a description of the layers from top to bottom: hot fudge, mint ice cream with chocolate chunks inside, espresso ice cream, and an underwhelmingly thin Oreo crust. Besides needing to increase the girth of the crust, I think Nancy should call Ghirardelli and figure out how to make that collaboration a reality because that is literally my only complaint about this unique dessert. Everything just needs that sweet Ghirardelli liquid gold... and yet again, them Maldon salt flakes. At the end of the day, Nancy's biscuit is the sole reason we chose this restaurant after seeing other people's pictures of its glory. Came here for dinner and then food blew us away. The buttermilk biscuits were salty, delicious and full of butter and love. Only thing is they were a bit heavy so we probably should've just ordered one. But we enjoyed them all the same! We ordered the sea scallops which came with radishes and a rice porridge and this dish was stellar. The scallops were so tender and buttery and the radishes gave some welcomed acidity. The rice porridge was super unique and savory and I really enjoyed this. We also got an order of the duck confit which was tender and sweet w the reduction. The potato mash was spiced well and the butter it squash was tender and yummy. We also got an order of the chocolate torte with the passion fruit syrup and this was the only part of our order which was somewhat of a miss. The chocolate didn't really go w the intense tartness of the passion fruit. Overall we had a wonderful experience and I would definitely return! read more
This place SLAPS!!!! Best food I've had in the Monterey-Carmel area. All the ingredients were super fresh, and flavors were well balanced and just downright yummy. All their seafood is sustainably sourced, a huge plus. The crab salad was my favorite: big chunks of fresh crab with fresh arugula and tangy + bright dressing. Service was attentive but not intrusive, and the place was cozy and warm. I highly recommend and would definitely come back if I was in the area again. read more
Came back for Nancy's Buttery Buttermilk Biscuit 5/5. Shared one with the missus back in 2020 when dining was outdoors. Savored each of our biscuits this time around. No sharing. Service was prompt and our server was friendly. Got the house Cabernet to start this dinner. Full, woodsy and dense I had the Spoonable 12 Hour Lamb Breast with Goat Cheese sauce 5/5. Tender, flavorful complimented by the chickpea stew and the sauce. Wife got the Rainbow Trout w/ wild rice saute 3/5. Pickled onions were overpowering. Son got the off menu Garlic Butter Pasta 5/5 again. Shared the Banana Beard Pudding 5/5 and Mint and Espresso Mud Pie 5/5 for dessert. Left full and contented. read more
Back the 2nd time and still did not disappoint. This place is very popular so a reservation is a must. Service is exemplary from hostess to server. Definitely a must go to spot in Pacific Grove. The first time we were here was during pandemic and seating was in their patio. The second time was indoor, closely seated with other guests. Food - we have tried the duck confit and the dungeness crab salad on our first visit. I do highly recommend these 2 dishes. The second time around, we tried something different. I had the Rainbow trout with sweet potato wild rice and hubby got the Spoonable 12hr lamb breast. Not really a fan of the fish but definitely a fan of the lamb. All in all we love this place... highly recommended indeed. read more

Trout and Duck Confit were delicious! Definitely get the biscuit which is flaky like a croissant. Restaurant was filled by 7:00 PM on. Tuesday evening. Service was good (clearing the plates, refilling the water) but the food delivery was very slow. read more

I ordered the biscuit and the spoonable lamb. Both were excellent but in retrospect, I should have ordered the grilled scallops. My friend had them and they were to die for. Came here for my birthday dinner to try an elevated seafood place for the first time, and I don't think we could've picked a more perfect place! Funnily enough, Passionfish has been on my mind ever since my cousin went and raved about their biscuits. In short, we went just to try their biscuits and got way more. Also, shoutout to our server, Adam, who was amazing! The layout of the store was pretty cool. It's narrow and the hallway leads straight into the bathroom. There were a lot of couples and some families. Right when we came in, they gave me a menu with "Happy birthday" stamped on it, which was cute. The wine menu has a whole spiel about the background of how they source their wine and how it's reasonably priced. I don't think you can beat it. Tostadita: These tangy, "spicy" bites were topped with a ton of pickled cabbage. It paired nicely with our white wine. Biscuit: For $3, I can totally see myself picking this up at a bakery for breakfast and coffee. It lived up to the hype! It has a delicious crunch in the outside with a hot, soft middle. I loved the accompanying butter with a hint of sweetness too. Sea scallops: Perfectly cooked and flavorful. It was my first time trying the rice powder, which was an interesting texture, sort of like mashed potatoes but more crumbly. Halibut: The green herb sauce tasted so fresh! It definitely felt like a "light" dinner, not as in not filling, but flavor-wise. It was perfectly cooked too. Chocolate torte: It's a nice, sweet, dark dessert. I recommend getting it with the tea pairing, which smelled so good and floral. Blue cheese ice cream with date purée: There was no birthday freebie but they stuck a candle on my ice cream. I forgot the name of the exact blue cheese, but wow, this hit like a truck. You need to be a huge blue cheese fan to like this. I got it because it was unique and I'm glad I did, but as someone who enjoys the occasional blue cheese crumble on my salad, this was a bit too strong and sweet for my liking. Its paired smokey tea was unlike anything I've tried, it was interesting. Overall, this was a cool experience and I'm so glad to have spent my birthday here! I'd love to come back. read more

Was in Monterey for work and stumbled on this restaurant. Decided to try it out for dinner and I had a great experience! I was worried I would be underdressed since Yelp lists the restaurant as "classy" but there was a mixture of attire inside. Ron was my server and was great. He treated me just like any other patron in the restaurant and made me feel very welcomed. I had the biscuit, lamb shank and bread pudding. The food was flavorful but I did take one star off as the bourbon sauce on the bread pudding was rather strong. Might just be person preference but all in all would definitely return again! read more

Spent my anniversary on NYD here and it was an exceptional experience. I love an upscale dining experience that feels homecooked and isn't stuck up. I had the California Squid which surprised me as a non-run-of-the-mill calamari, scallop entree (best dish we had), 12 hour lamb, and Duck confit. Fuck confit could've used some salt but maybe I'm a sodium guy about to pass a kidney stone, who knows. Still very tasty. Also, get the biscuit. You will not regret it. Sonja, our server, was pleasant and extremely helpful to navigating the wine/food menus. Exceptional service goes a long way for me. If you're ever in Monterey and want to skip the touristy bs, drive 5 min to pacific grove to Passionfish. I will be back if I'm ever back in the area! read more
With all the great Yelp reviews, we knew we wanted to eat here for a birthday dinner. We made reservations through the handy little button on yelp and arrived to a packed house. We were greeted and seated in the back part of the restaurant, which was nice, since it was a smaller separate room and it was much quieter. The restaurant was a little warm, so I'm glad they had the back door cracked open so we could get some fresh air. We heard so many great things about Nancy's biscuits, we had to try. We ordered 2 at $3 a piece. They were massive. We definitely should have just had 1 and shared. Tons of flaky layers so it was light and fluffy, but definitely very filling. I wish they had a flavored butter on the side, or jam, to elevate the flavor. The beet salad $14, with whipped gorgonzola dolce, yellow curry and pecans, was fresh and light. Really tasty. Sea scallop appetizer $14 1 sea scallop served on top of an artichoke risotto cake. This is the best thing we ate all night! The risotto cake was super tasty. Crispy on the outside and silky risotto on the inside. I wish they served this as a main entrée. The sea scallops entrée $36 with tomato-truffle butter and a savory rice custard was yummy. 4 Scallops were served with this dish, they were sweet and well seared. The rice custard, was different, but really tasty with the added corn. They also served us a complimentary scoop of vanilla ice cream with passionfruit puree for the birthday celebration. It was a perfect way to end the evening. Portions are not huge, but they are good and service was super friendly. They even wished us a Happy Birthday again after we walked out. read more
Saw that this was a popular spot so we booked a reservation and I'm glad we did. The restaurant was pretty busy when we arrived but we were seated rather quickly without a wait. We had already reviewed the menu and were able to place our order quickly. We decided on the lamb and rainbow trout dishes. At the blink of an eye our food came out and with another blink we were done ! Both dishes were tasty but the portion sizes left a lot to be desired. We had a good overall experience with the wait staff, ambience, etc. but left feeling like we just had an expensive fast-food like experience. read more

We go here when we visit Pacific Grove. The service is excellent. It can get a bit noisy when full. This visit we had the scallop appetizer. It was a nicely cooked large scallop on a risotto cake. The mixed green salad was large enough for two. Nicely dressed, it went well with the delicious buttermilk biscuit. The biscuit is large and buttery with a really nice texture. For the entree, I had halibut. It was perfectly cooked with a subtle sauce accompanied by walnuts. The food is expensive but reasonable given the quality. read more
Tried this place for dinner. We got the smoked fish tostaditas, duck confit, and rainbow trout. Everything was so tasty. It was the perfect pairing to share for two people and we definitely felt full afterwards. Tostaditas we're very cute as an appetizer. They were piled high with lots of pickled veggies, the fish, and the crunchy tortilla. Main dish highlights: the duck fell right off the bone, and the rainbow trout was already deboned as well! Star of the night was their banana bread pudding. As a dessert person I would highly come back just for this. It was nice and soft with a crunchy bottom exterior. It was nice to have something warm paired with a scoop of their ice cream. The best part was it's burnt caramel sauce. The flavors melded nicely and wasn't too sweet which made us finishing the whole thing. read more

Are reservations required?
It depends how you define "required". Nobody's going to shoot walk-ins for trying, but Passionfish is small and enormously popular, so if your dining schedule isn't flexible, make a reservation well in advance of your preferred date and time.
Is it okay to take two toddlers here?
Shouldn't be a problem, but you may want to opt for outdoor seating as it's pretty cramped inside with no social distancing and all staff here not wearing masks.
Do waiters wear masks outdoors?

Are dogs allowed for outdoor dining?
Yes, my Labrador Retriever napped under the table during the meal that my wife and I enjoyed immensely. Wait staff were all delighted to meet my dog. Brought her a bowl of water.
