My inner 'Katniss' came out, this is from my first visit back in February 25, 2017. I know... WAY late, but still I LOVED it, reminded me of my previous archery dream!! I was also surprised to find out that I was left-eye dominant (I'm a right-handed person). Our instructor Kaitlyn was great, very thorough in teaching the specifics of archery, safety and instructed our aim-focus. One of our team member even 'got the balloon' in the event-wide competition and I was able to aim straight to hit some bullseyes!! :D Can't wait to be back again!!

I had an incredible time learning about archery and shooting arrows with Roving Archers! I wasn't sure what to expect but what I experienced I wouldn't have thought of anyways. The first attempt at taking an archery lesson with Roving Archers was a fail. I had to head home but luckily, they hand out rain-check passes. The rain-check passes guarantees a spot for next time and no standing in the long line. The second attempt was the success! I got there earlier than the prior attempt and I was 5th - 6th in line so the rain-check passes weren't needed. The timing and day was just perfect. The professional archers arrived early and started setting up right away. They signed everyone in quickly and assigned instructors in a snap of a finger. They had a great system with an assembly line handing out gear to the students! Each group is about 8 to 10 students with one instructor. My instructor Robert was such an amazing guy! He definitely made my first archery experience very enjoyable! He was very patient, had a clam tone in his voice and gave equal attention to each student. I shot my arrow on the metal part of the target and it flew back towards me. I was a little embarrassed but Robert didn't skip a beat in cheering me up. He knew what he was doing and what he was talking about. Some of the other instructors were a little more stern in comparison so I am thankful I was assigned to Robert! Hopefully I get him as an instructor again! There is only one parking lot all the way down the road after entering the park. There is also residential parking but be aware that there will be a very mild hike down. Reflecting on my experience I am definitely coming back to the intermediate class! Hopefully the weather is a tad bit hotter.

Based on free intro class This class is by online reservation only, no walk ups allowed. Because there's only 1 intro class offered 3 times a month, spots fill really fast (within 30 min of opening up the reservations) weeks in advance. If I had to guess, one class has 30-40 people. Reservations open up every Friday night at 8 pm. Treat it as if you're trying to get tickets to a concert and be ready to snag a spot. Plenty of parking in the lot when I arrived because the beginner's class starts at 730 am. When I was leaving though, the lot was packed and people were parking on the street. If you don't mind the walk, I'd recommend parking on the street anyway because the road narrows to the point of one way traffic. Cars have to take turns entering and exiting, but it's a bit hard to see if cars are approaching from the other direction. Setting up takes a while because everyone needs to fill out the waiver and get fitted for their equipment. Fun fact that I learned: I am cross dominant (left eye, right arm) which is an advantage in archery. They break us up into groups of 8 or so and take us away from the main range to a semi private target. There, the instructor spends a good 30+ min laying it all out for you. You learn the whistle commands, the proper posture, how to aim, and all that good stuff. When we get to try, we all line up side by side and shoot away. It's not one by one, which definitely takes performance anxiety away. We all have 4 arrows. When you're done shooting your 4, you hang up your bow and wait for the signal to go collect your color coordinated arrows. As you're practicing, the instructor goes around helping people. I didn't count, but I'd guess that we got to practice maybe 8 rounds before they brought us back to the main range for the mini competition. The competition is similar to practice except that they hang a balloon in front of the target. The main range has 6 targets so 6 balloons. The entire intro class lines up side by side, waits for the signal, and shoots. Because there are only 6 balloons, this is half skill/luck and half speed. If someone pops the balloon you were aiming at, you're free to try again at a different balloon BUT you only get to use 2 arrows total. If you miss both times, you're done. Put a little hustle into it because there was at least one person who didn't even shoot one arrow before all 6 were popped. As for instructors, I don't know how everyone is, but I can tell you this. My instructor, Kurt, had 3 students (myself included) pop the balloons. That's half the targets in the competition! At the end, we all get a card saying we get to skip the intro class if we choose to come back. If you do come back, it's first come, first served instead of reservations and you must present the card. Classes for returning archers aren't free though.

Great way to learn archery and stay in shape. Highly recommended. Thank God that Pasadena allows archery. It is a great sport and rare and totally safe pastime! This is a wonderful range as well. Thank you Pasadena and Roving Archers!

FREE is an attractive word that can drag crowds of people out of bed even on an early Saturday morning. This archery club hosts free beginners-level instruction at Pasadena's Lower Arroyo Seco Park starting at 8:30am every Saturday. All equipment is provided, so just bring friends and yourself. The introductory archery class is highly popular especially during the summer. Since there is only a handful of volunteer staff available for the free session, participants must come early to ensure a spot in the program. This past weekend, we arrived at 7:08am and there were already over 30 people ahead waiting in line! By 7:30am, the line doubled in length and over 100 archers showed up by 7:45am. Each instructor was assigned to 10 participants. I assume anyone who arrived after 7:45 was given a rain check and then turned away. I enjoyed the beginners class because it assumes no prior knowledge of archery. The staff helped everyone get fitted with the equipment (bow, 5 arrows, quiver, armguard, shooting glove) before walking them through how to shoot an arrow using proper technique. After the structured instructional session, there was time for archers to practice 5 rounds shooting at the group's individual target which was about 20 feet away. Our instructor Mr. Dodge appeared to be a very experienced coach. He gave each participant feedback on effective form, how to hold the bow, how to aim, how to bend the string back to your chin, etc. He was very patient, made everyone feel comfortable shooting, and over time we all improved on accuracy. During my first couple trials, I was hitting the high end of the bale often but after he showed me how to aim properly, my arrows began to land in the target area. Pasadena Roving Archers definitely stresses "safety first". Nobody was allowed to retrieve arrows prior to a whistle command, and only two people were to remove arrows from the target at a time. At around 9:30am, everyone lined up on the range and were given 2 arrows to shoot at balloon targets about 30 to 40 feet away. If your arrow happened to strike a balloon, you claim the prize enclosed by the balloon ($1 bill). Since the instructors were so effective in developing skilled archers, all the balloons were popped within minutes. This beginner archery class was a fun experience, and I think it is ideal for a casual date or a morning activity with a small group of friends. I would recommend it to anyone in the Pasadena area who enjoys outdoor activities and would not complain about waking up at 6am on a Saturday morning.

    boo-ya!

I've been twice now and I'm hooked! I wasn't all that interested in archery before taking the free intro class; just seemed like it'd be a fun thing to do but I didn't know how much I'd like it. For the first session my friend and I heeded the advice of previous reviewers and got out there at the butt crack of dawn (a little before 7am) and we were in the first group to go out, which meant more shooting time! They provide you with all the equipment you need and our instructor Eric was really fun. In the beginning it was so hard and our arrows were going everywhere, but by the end of the session most of us were getting onto the paper. Afterwards we went to the main range to do that balloon-popping thing and both my friend and I popped one and got our stamped dollars, woot! About a month later we went back as "returners," which meant we could get out there at a much more civilized hour, like 9:30. It doesn't seem to be as crucial to be one of the first ones in line for the returner sessions because you're not divided up into groups like the beginners. We had to do quite a bit of waiting around while they got everyone all signed up and stuff. Also, it's $5 per session as a returner, which is still crazy freaking cheap, imo. We opted to break off with a single instructor group instead of staying on the main range, and I think it was a good move, since it was only our second time and we were able to get more individual attention. Our instructor Russell was really nice and gave us some more helpful pointers that we didn't get the first time around. I even got a bullseye! Totally an accident, but a thrill, nonetheless :) After about an hour we went and joined the main group where they did the balloon popping again (no dollars for us again this time, alas) and we got to shoot at 20 yards, which was cool. The next time I think we'll stay out on the main range and see what that's like. Anyway, a really cool fun (and cheap) thing to do on a Saturday morning in Pasadena!

Oh em gee, I'm still riding the archery high. Haha. No but seriously, this was so much fun. A must-do! I never got to go to camp as a kid *tear* so I had no idea what to expect, but was pleasantly surprised by how organized this event was. Kudos to the Pasadena Roving Archers for putting this on! So here's the 411: Directions aren't as complicated as people make them out to be. Just type in the address into your GPS & waalaa! You're there! As for finding the actual archery place, just walk towards the park (yes, you'll cross a little bridge), make a left and you'll start to see signs. It ain't rocket science people. First timers have to go to a FREE safety orientation to sign waivers, learn the basics and such. You absolutely have to get there early to ensure admission. I would suggest 7 am (when I got there at 7, there was already a line of about 25 people, which isn't too bad, especially because you get fitted for your gear sooner, which means you have a little more practice time). The classes are run by volunteers, so if there aren't enough volunteers the morning of, then you are SOL. If you happen to be SOL, the PRA will hand you a rain-check, which entitles you to a front-of-the-line privilege next time...so long as you arrive before 7:45. You will be turned away if you come later. Once there, listen out for directions. Some of the volunteers (organizers?) take their job very seriously and aren't playing around! You'll be called up to sign a waiver, figure out your eye-dominance & be fitted for your equipment. Then you'll be directed to an instructor who will take you to a little hideaway spot for your lesson. Groups run from 5-9 people, which is awesome. Very personalized attention. After an hour or so practicing (again, if you get here early, you get to practice for a longer period of time) you're taken to the main floor. Here, you'll practice shooting at a longer distance and even compete for a buck. It is waaay funner than I'm making it sound. Your class is over by 10. At which, you'll start to see the 10:30 group lining up. If you're a returnee, you will be in this group. Not sure of the logistics though (i.e. if there's a fee, etc.). This is a must do! Perfect for families, a date or just something to do with your buds. And do yourself a favor, head on over to Mix N Munch after for some breakfast (shameless plug!). You won't regret it!

I'm on the road to being the next Katniss! Just kidding...I'm still far from it but Pasadena Roving Archers is definitely a great place to learn about archery for free for the first time and $5 for each class thereafter. The first class was a little painful because we have to get there by 7:15am or so they recommended. Unfortunately I just moved to the Hollywood area so that meant I had to get up even earlier! I highly recommend grabbing coffee but beware because they do not have bathrooms at this site. The location is a little obscure, I admit I drove right past it and had to back up to get into it. There's a dusty one car road that leads you down and apparently parking is limited which is why they want people to get there earlier. A long line was already forming when I got there so I was glad I sucked it up to be there on time. After filling out the forms and getting fitted for equipment, my friends and I joined another group of people (about 10 people in our group total) with our instructor. He lead us to a practice area with a target and we started with some arm stretches (boy I should have really taken advantage of this). He taught us the basics about the bow and arrows, the stance etc.... In the beginning he had each of us practice with him individually so he could see our form and help us adjust. I will tell you, this archery is no easy business. I could barely pull back the string without feeling the strain in my arm- translation- I need to lift some more weights after this class! After perfecting our form, we moved onto group shooting to practice what we learned, and one of my friend's happened to shoot it right on target!! Lucky duck. After practicing, our instructor also taught us about aiming and after practicing as a group for several more times the class was sadly over. We then joined everyone else who was in the beginners lesson in the front of the range where there was a competition for shooting at the balloons at various targets. Each balloon had a dollar bill in it and whoever popped it could keep the dollar with the lovely stamp of the Roving Archers. Everyone shot in 2 sets since there were so many people. I got to say I was very lucky because I shot a balloon on my first try- I felt so victorious! After this we received a nice card that says we passed our first class and returned our equipment. There was also an announcement about the Roving Archers possibly being taken over by a dog park gasp! I hope this never happens because I just discovered this amazing place and would love to go back to practice. This range has been in existence in the same location for over 70 years, it would be unfortunate if it was taken away by a bunch of dogs and their owners who can't be creative enough to find another space. I look forward to returning to Pasadena Roving Archers for my next practice session starting at 9:30am. Everyone should give this place a try!

Tried archery last Saturday, but got in late. We got rain check cards and ate our protein pancakes while we waited.

I came here a few weeks ago with a friend who thought it would be a good idea to de-stress with an early morning archery class. We had tried to get into the class the Saturday prior, but arrived about a half hour later than the recommended 7:00 AM time. Unfortunately, we did not get a spot in the class, but we made the cut-off to get raincheck cards, and were able to avoid the line altogether the following Saturday. Note: If you don't get a spot the fist time around, they give raincheck cards to the next 20 people in line. The first class, basic training, is held every Saturday and is free, but you need to arrive at or before 7:00AM to ensure a parking spot and a spot in line. Oh, and the class will end by about 10-10:30AM. They first have you stand in line as they get everyone hooked up with all the archery equipment. Yup, they provide everything you need for the class and it's all free. It's a pretty sweet deal! Then, you'll get grouped up with other people and do a little meet and greet before the training. If you have long hair, be sure to bring a hair tie! Otherwise, they'll have ties available, but I'm not too keen on using ties that aren't mine. The people in my group were pretty awesome and freakin' hilarious! Bless our instructor, Robert, for being so patient with our notorious group. He was incredibly knowledgeable and also funny. Brian was another one of the instructors that came around to check out what all the laughter was about on our end. Brian noticed that I was having difficulties and helped me better my form. Apparently, I'm double jointed, so I had to put extra effort to keep the bowstring from slapping my arm. After the training is over, you get a chance to go on the big range along with all the other groups. You get to shoot all of your arrows on the big range once before starting the balloon challenge. They'll attach one balloon to each target, and the first to shoot the balloon gets to keep the prize in side *spoiler alert* - It's a dollar! I didn't win the prize, but two of my awesome group mates did, and that was good enough for me. Way to represent Alfred and Andy! After the class, we all got cards indicating that we had completed training. This means that next time around, we can come to the 9:30AM class. This class is less instructional and more shooting oriented, woot! Although that class isn't free, it's still only $5!

Just took my first lesson here (free BTW) and it was a great time. Russell, our instructor, had great tips to share, was patient and had a sense of humor. The scenary is very relaxing and added to the overall experience. I paid to learn at HiTech Archery and it was CRAP. These guys put in 100x more effort, and they do it at no charge. Roving Archers truly love archery and you can sense that with how they teach. I will be back again, and will probably also do their private lessons. Don't forget to donate, even if you take a free class! They do an amazing job and should be supported by the community.

Signed up for the free beginners class online. First class is free. We had a great instructor named Craig, showed us how to load the arrow, stretch and aim. We arrived at 7am there were already a couple of cars at the parking lot. Since we were the first ones there we were the first groups that were measure for our arrows. At the end of the class if you pop a balloon at the target you get a prize. Lots of fun!

Arrived at 6:45am and was one of the first in line.

Ask the Community - Pasadena Roving Archers

The website is not working? How do I sign up for trail class for my kids?

How old do you have to be for this?

We have taught children as young as three or four, but they must be able to listen and follow directions in order to maintain safety while on the shooting line.

The website said the range is open to the public. However, it requires I City issued archery credentials when using the Lower Arroyo Archery Range. How can I get that? If I am an experienced archer but first time going to this range, can I stillshoot?

The Pasadena Roving Archers in conjunction with the City Of Pasadena has a fun and easy morning class twice each month. Go the the PRA website for full details under the classes section.

For their beginner class on sat at 8, can we still try to wait in line for a spot if their website said the class is fully booked?

Thanks for asking! We no longer accept walk-ups for the first time class.

Dylan explained that there were several good options in different brands and offered to assist. He was so nice and helpful that we agreed to see what's available. Long story short, Dylan took the time to show us several different brands and types, then worked with us on size, width, styles and colors. 2nd 5-star Review:…read more I'm in love with GUNS DIRECT. I LOVE THIS PLACE AND THE CUSTOMER SERVICE I ALWAYS GET HERE. Since my first purchase, I've returned for a rifle with a fixed mag, which I learned before picking up I could have converted to "featureless", so I could use replaceable mags. I asked Ramiro about this, and that's how I learned Ramiro is an armorer, and he walked me through the conversion. He sold me what I later found was the best featureless grip handle on the market, and then he completed the conversion for free with my purchase of the grip handle, and my 2 new replaceable mags. I've really appreciated Ramiro's advice, insights, and the personal experience Ramiro has shared with me , which has all turned out to be valid and true. I have the bruises to prove it. I wanted a KSG. That's how I found GD. Thats how I met Ramiro. He didn't lie to me. He warned me about the recoil on a pump action shotgun like the KSG. I said I'd get used to it. He asked if I was sure. I said "I have to." So not only did he sell me a KSG, he stopped me from getting the scratched unit I was looking at, and got me a blemish-free KSG. As a newbie with no mentor to walk me into this world, I was willing to just buy whatever a knowledgeable salesman would sell me, simply accepting that a scratch was just how firearms sales can sometimes be--but Ramiro didn't let that happen. Ramiro really has been a great guide. He helped me pick my first 9mm--S&W M&P 2.0-and it's such a great firearm. It's solid. Reliable. Accurate. Comfortable. Looks cool. Comes with switchable grips. I bought Trijicon night sights on Amazon, and took over a month to make my way to GD for the install, only to find I had bought sights for the wrong S&W 9mm. Since it had been over 30 days, I couldn't return them, but Ramiro not only found me an alternative option (Ameriglo optic compatible GRM tritium) night sights--but also included the install with the purchase. I love my new Ameriglo night sights on my M&P 2.0 9mm! What a difference. And great bang for your buck. And they are optic-ready sights, so I can add the red dot later on. I appreciated being guided so knowledgeably. I follow Ramiro's lead confidently. And while I was there doing this, Ramiro asks me if I had with me the adapters that came with the streamlight I had on my 9mm, because he was offering to fix the streamlight I improperly installed on my 9mm (which was sticking out too far). I did not have them, so he offered to fix it for me if I just brought the adapters. I really appreciated Ramiro's offer, but more importantly I appreciated him pointing out to me my improper installation. I soon realized I could fix it myself. I've since fixed it, and I have yet again Ramiro to thank. To be clear, every single rep at GD has been helpful and totally professional. I've really appreciated the service I've received. Alonso, Danny, Jerry, Sherri, Alex all super helpful professionals. Alonso and Danny both remembered my name, which is shocking because this place is popular. I love love love Guns Direct. My gun shop for life! I already have my eye on two more firearms, and Jerry even has me thinking about a revolver. And Ramiro makes me want a semiautomatic shotgun. I love it!

I wish I got the young gentleman's name because it seemed like he was one of the only ones in the store who 1) knew where things were 2) could perform an assigned task 3) actually help us out. The reason I am saying this is because we went to the cash register upstairs and the cashier was uncertain that the service was downstairs. Not a big deal, she radioed them and confirmed where we could go. Easy. We go downstairs and show that cashier the glove (brand new, just bought for christmas) and that guy did not know how to do the steaming services, which was also fine because he asked another staff member who helped us, HOWEVER, the first guy told us the cost of it (which there is no cost because after a certain price glove it is a free service). The second guy (bless him) corrected him and stated the price of the glove and why it's free. As the worker was breaking in the glove the other guy cashier asked him multiple questions about where things were, if they did certain services, if he could help this other guest. Honestly that cashier guy was doing NOTHING. This is all in the midst of our guy fitting the glove which consists of steaming and banging it with a mallet which could be dangerous! Just seemed like an unprofessional thing to do. Now maybe this guy was new so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt but seriously it seemed like he didn't even bother trying to figure it out on his own before turning the the gentleman helping us. All in all the service was great, he was knowledgeable and answered the questions we had! It seemed like there was a large selection of inventory and some decent sales. I would go back if I needed something from dick's specifically

He changed the grip on my son's putter and even gave recommendations if we decided to upgrade. Glad we chose Dick's for our golf needs.
