During the LA fires they helped out by cleaning the organic matter off the streets and distributing tons of supplies to families in need such as medical, hygiene, clothes, and food. The kindness of these people's hearts is greater than anything hate can throw at them as even as the current president attepts to exile there families and friends they still work for a better LA and America. ISeems like they've been closed for a year or more. Their Facebook is active, so maybe they closed for COVID for a while? In any case, this is a vital service and a city the size of Pasadena should really have a couple offices like this. I've used the Job Center a dozen times or so for various construction-related projects over approximately the past 6 years. Some observations: Good stuff: * Have never gotten a person who didn't work their butt off for a full day. I'm not a back-breaker, these guys (for my types of jobs they always assign men) are serious and most (not all) have had some level of experience with construction and residential labor. I've met some who were remarkably overqualified. * The office managers seem mostly fair and knowledgeable. They're like a taxi dispatcher, so I imagine there's some degree of just giving the job to the next person in line, but I think they do try to match your project with a person who has a compatible skill set. * Rates seem reasonable. More below. * They do not tether the people who participate. In other words, if you meet someone you love working with, and they you, you can exchange contacts and work directly together. * 100% of the pay to the employee stays with the employee. The Center does not take a dime as far as I can tell. Other observations: * If you don't show up early some days you might have slim pickings. I've done a couple projects where I told the manager that it's some hard digging and lifting rocks, etc... and they assign a dude who has to be at least 60. I can't complain because see my comment above. But I do worry a bit and a couple times have taken it easy on the guys. But not because they were slow or complained. Overall age at the Center does seem to trend higher than the pool of labor you'll find waiting near Throop Lumber, for example. * I also suspect that, if your job isn't what some of the guys are looking for, they'll pass, and the low fellow on the pole gets stuck with the shovel. Some of this conversation is done out loud as the dispatcher talks in Spanish to the guys in the waiting area. I don't know what politics are involved, but do sense that there are some at play. * Almost everyone is primarily Spanish speaking that I've worked with. In the days of Google Translate, that's not a problem. And over half of the people I've worked with speak some English, several with complete fluency. * This next one isn't my observation, but was told to me by a person I've employed a couple times in the past for similar work. That person is an African American man and he was put off by the Center because the times he tried to wait there for work it felt to him like he was being passed over. Guys who were waiting for less time got good jobs ahead of him. I can't verify that, but apparently thought it was worth sharing. * Over the years I've used the Center, the wages seemed consistent until they didn't. I think it was around '18 when I noticed the quotes becoming odd and going a bit haywire... This was noticeable in part because I think prior to that their rates were generally too low. Like I seem to recall baseline being around $12 an hour for quite a while. I could be misremembering, but it was low, too low. And I rounded up to $15 or $20 depending on the work. But then it seemed like for a spell every time I went in they raised the rate by a couple bucks. It wasn't the hourly that was off-putting so much as the inconsistency and lack of communication as to why the rate had changed in the last seven days (again.) At one point I got kind of frustrated and began to hire the lumberyard guys. But hopefully they are at a stable rate again and communicate it better to clients -- that's the other thing, it was for a while like they were testing the waters and it just felt shady. Maybe it was just the one manager, but I felt like they were targeting the gullible guy (me.) Conclusion: The Job Center is a vital part of the community and deserves our support. From the POV of the client it could be better in several ways: Clearer communication of services and rates, more consistent and professional dispatchers, higher wages overall for workers, better advertising in the community, better followup on experiences with the possible goal of long-term employment for workers who might want it, more locations, more inclusive management of labor pool. If you're reading this, you're almost certainly a prospective client, not a worker, so you're wondering if you should trust this service. The answer from my experience is an unqualified, Yes. But also in my experience, from the stories I've heard from workers from the Center, it's the labor who is much more likely to get ripped off by the employers. The Job Center gives some structure and protection and comfort to people who have almost no one looking out for their interests. So keep that in mind as you're getting your projects done and be fair and pay well. read more

STAY AWAY IF YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR BELONGINGS! I cannot sleep some nights thinking about how I was violated when a day laborer stole thousands of dollars of jewelry from my home. Theresa, a packer from the Pasadena Day Laborer Center was the worst choice I ever made for my move. The center won't accept any responsibility. Theresa took major items, my gold bangle bracelets, rings, watches and other items without my permission! I realized that some of my rings and earrings were gone after they finished packing, and I called them to confront them. They denied any wrongdoing and refused to pay me back for my stolen jewelry. This is outrageous and dishonest behavior. I do not recommend this packer to anyone. Do yourself a favor and find a more reliable and professional packer for your move if you want your belongings to travel to your new residence and not home with the packers! read more

Excellent workers. The people at the center are very nice and professional, and the workers know what theyre doing. I read the other reviews and it seems that other people had problems communicating with workers what they wanted done and how to do it. Most workers are able to understand some English in my experience and did a good and professional job. Hired a couple people to help me build an addition to my house - doing sheet rock, painting, etc. Was so impressed by them I went back later to get some house cleaning done and had two women to come work with us who did a really outstanding job. I had some movers flake on me and left me in a lurch right before a cross country move. The next morning, right at 7 am, I went to this facility. The lady at the front desk was super nice and pulled together a team of 4 men within 30 minutes. All of the laborers were polite and courteous. They had my whole house on the truck in just under 3 hours. I took good care of them and told them how much I appreciate them. I would recommend this business. read more

Horrible Experience. Called to the center to help out. However I was sent people that did not know what they were doing and were not honest enough to say so. Now I am out of my project and out of money. I kept my honest end and paid the people that came to my house. However, the job was not done. When calling the center the following day I was told that there was nothing they can do. I was told that the center is not liable for the workers they send to you. Very disappointed!!!!! read more

This is an important request for the Job Center to improved the quality of the workers.... Seems like no one not care if they do not speak in english. since i moved to Pasadena, I was aware about this Community Center. People in charge are very nice friendly and professional. Also they have pretty good control about all the workers I mean all the information needed, all aplications very much complete. A couple of times I even came looking for a house job or as a window painter, just to see how they do work together. I must say I wish this center be able to help the workers and demand from them a major effort as far as is ''English language''. there are night classes free of charge sometimes... but this workers do not go a step ahead and try to learn the language. This office should ask for some kind of english certificate at least to be able to say the must simple words to understand the employers... I help my daughter in law ( from Wisconsin)to how to find a lady to do house work and we did find one excellent person, from Central America, honest, hard working and loving person with my grandkids....but she do not know any english and did not care about learning it and is been working for more that 10 years already. Is been very dificult for my daughter in law to understand her and she did not care or show no interest what so ever on doing anything the my daughter need it. She was many time dissapointment because the ''made did everything her way!...'' This workers have no traning that all, they do their best but if they cannot read any products, instructions, labels, how to used them how measure the soap, or not to use clorox when is not needed...? cannot take any phone messages or read any medicine labels...? Believed me is very hard to work together like this. I wish they will take time both parts in a training and learing English. Is a basic and is important requirement here in this country english is the language to use To Pasadena Job Center; '' please motivate this workers to learn the language"" this is for the job center, I am sad to see how negligent people become once is here to live and work they stop trying ...to become legaly citizens.... I never understood why they spend many years 15, 20 and much more with out getting and trying to become legaly and become part of this wonderful country, there is no excuse....no matter how skillful can be this workers if they cannot talk English.... there are things that the Government can do it all. read more
