My beautiful sissy Melineh travels often and brings back unused toiletries from hotels. She acquired quite a collection, so we go together one evening to put together apothecary bags to give to the unhoused. Since we made about 90 kits, she figured it would be best for us to deliver them to an organization that assists those in need, and she found Foothill Unity Center. Foothill Unity Center is a multi-service agency that provides services to individuals and families in need. Founded in 1980 by Josephine Anderson, the center has become a source for food, health services, and crisis assistance to thousands of low-income families in the SGV. The place is clean and spacious and the staff were friendly and gracious for our donation. It felt nice to do something good for others and give back to the community. The security guard on duty was an absolute doll - polite, friendly, and respectful. He made our day as much as we made his. This is a HORRIBLE place. If you need rental assistance they pick and choose who gets approved. They denied someone I know because she's a student and fell behind on rent because she had to pay her final tuition. They told her to apply for financial aid, even with financial aid there is an out of pocket expense monthly. All she needed was help paying rent so that she can finish her program in peace. This is her last month and all these people told her was her case wasn't strong enough. I don't know how these people were able to secure positions to help other people. The comprehension of these people is that of an infant. It's ok though my friend will seek assistance elsewhere and I am confident she will be blessed. My kids and I have volunteered for many years at this food bank. It is a lifeline for so many people in need in our community. It's incredible how much food they distribute and how many families they help. I see on their social media how they give holiday gifts to children in need, help with back to school supplies and vouchers, dental cleanings, vet clinics, mobile showers and so much more. Manyof the people who work here are volunteers, and even the paid staff don't earn much - I know of some who have been past clients wanting to give back. I have seen the faces of gratitude of some of the clients who come here for help. Whenever I come here I have a renewed sense of faith in human kindness and generosity, seeing the impact this organization has and the generosity of so many volunteers and donors, trying to help those who need it most. I'm sad reading some of the negative reviews. I also imagine people are quicker to complain on yelp even for free services than to show their appreciation. I also understand it must be truly frustrating for people who are hungry and/or struggling to survive to have patience when things don't go smoothly as life is already so difficult to bear, I'm so sorry for what you are dealing with. But I truly believe that the people working at Foothill Unity are doing their best within the constraints or limited resources they have and that they are also dealing with tough and stressful situations all day. I think it is unrealistic to expect a charity that is dependent on volunteers and has limited resources to be a well-oiled machine. In my interactions with those who work there, I believe they are doing the best they can, and I am inspired by all the amazing things they do. read more

COVID-19: Social distancing is enforced at this establishment. Some of the staff wears a mask. All individuals are not expected to wear a mask. It's optional now. Some of the staff also wears gloves. There are no hand sanitizers available for people to use. This place is open and available with no limited capacity. They are not sanitizing in between people. COVID-19 Vaccination Proof: This establishment currently does not require proof of vaccination. Parking: The parking lot for this establishment is decent. No one parks here anyways because it is a drive through food bank. The volunteers, like me, will bring food out to you while you wait in the car. Support your local non-profits! We always have to remember to give back to our local community. This non-profit accepts donations of all-kinds! So before you throw away your clothes or canned food, consider this place first. I volunteered for Thanksgiving at an event held at their HQ. The event was pretty organized and the people that work here are passionate about giving back to the less fortunate. My role for this event was to walk people down the produce line and help them fill their bag with goods to cook a Thanksgiving dinner at home. Some people even came up to me crying, super thankful to be receiving this from Foothill Unity Center. It was so heartwarming to see this and made me realized that sometimes we really do get carried away with our daily lives. Came back 2 times , of last month. Printer broke down can't renew my VIP for picking up food. Came back today, I have to wait in line when THEY have all my documents. They can't even print out the paper when they have my damn documents.. Sadly it's not organized and prepare.... Last time waited over 2 hours for food and checking in..... What an amazing nonprofit! I can definitely see that the volunteers here are dedicated and worked very hard to provide resources for the surrounding community! I was there to donate some leftover canned food and extra medical supplies with my mom and received an incredible assistance! Jonathan was there and was extremely helpful and friendly there! The service there was top notch and I had no issues! I recommend anyone who has leftover canned foods or supplies to donate them to this place! They do amazing work for the community! I have cancer and I am homeless I went there this black women told me to come back the next day and she would get me some hotel vouchers I went back the next day full of Hope that finally I was going to get some help I got to the front door rang the bell the African American woman came to the joy to inform me that they did not have any more hotel vouchers that they had to take into consideration that women and children first I can respect that but it's b******* at the same time I have cancer I have chemotherapy and cold today go through daily and to be told that I cannot have a hotel voucher so that I can be sick privately in a room and be comfortable with this cancer is more b******* foothill unity in Monrovia is nothing more than a bunch of lying to face b****** we don't know what the hell they're doing and they're not there to help you on top of that if you go there for food don't get the day lunches it is a skimmed peanut butter and jelly hair sandwich and then something that they called butter and cheese sandwich it's b******* it's it's dogs get fed better than you do have put her Unity Monrovia they're nothing but they're just they're just to get their paychecks. If concerned about dates on food packages, I suggest you google food shelf-life to avoid food wasting. There are reader friendly PDFs and tables to understand about food safety like avoiding dented cans (botulism), etc. I've volunteered at different food banks before and there are guidelines & regulations to follow in order to maintain these services for local communities. I don't know too much about the staff and what they do daily except for what I read on their website, but any place that have volunteers to accept donations & help the less fortunate deserves high marks in my book. Whenever I have items in the house, I always try to find resources that can benefit others instead to throwing them away. There were times family gave me foods that I can't use ( ie. huge tub of peanut butter fr Costco... etc) I would bring it here in hopes there's a family that could use it. I found this organization when Yelp sent out a list of organizations that they love to support. i decided to check this one out and signed up to volunteer for their holiday event. The event was a huge success as many families were able to come and shop for food and necessities while making it fun for the family with treats and photo opportunities. We helped with cleaning up after the event. There were a lot of volunteers so we ended up early. I'm glad I volunteered and look forward to future opportunities to help! read more

This center is operated as a food bank. But what they offer is superior to any other food bank in the area. They give out fruits, vegetables, baked goods besides a box full of can goods, beans and pasta. The staff is extremely nice and courteous. read more

The work this charitable organization does is remarkable and a great help for those who need it but it is very difficult to give this group the appreciation it is entitled to when the staff treat those who use the services with such scorn, disregard and petulance. On several occasions, staff members made those who came for assistance feel as though their request for help was a bothersome imposition and not one of the core reasons for the organization existence. In one instance, staff were very upset because a person seeking food dared to disrupt their lunch hour with a request for food. The mission of this group is terrific, however the execution of it needs a dramatic improvement. They do distributions to needy people/families on Thanksgiving and Christmas, helping a lot of people in the area. Their Xmas annual distribution is done at the Arboretum in Arcadia. This year, the weather decided not to cooperate and it was POURING, but that didn't stop the determined volunteers and recipients. Over 1000 families and 800 adults were helped. Unity center does a good job of providing for people in trouble. Lots of food and great other services. (Except they are unexpectedly closed around holidays.) They give out food for 1-3 people or 4+ (+ maybe larger families) There's only one of me, so I find the quantities can be overwhelming. Sometimes amazing things like pastured eggs, fillet mignon and organic chicken! Other times spoiled food. (Buyer beware.) Staff treatment of clients is great! Always respectful, caring and considerate. I was able to get prescription glasses, and I'm on the list for teeth cleaning soon. They also check blood pressure and do other health services! Foothill Unity Center keeps donations local and helps those in the San Gabriel Valley who are in need. I had the privilege of seeing over 100 children/teens get free dental services. One teenage boy in particular came from a poverty-stricken family and had never seen a dentist until Foothill came to the rescue. Several kids had much-needed fillings and deep cleanings, thanks to the partnership with USC and UCLA dental schools and Foothill Unity Center. Every week they give groceries to families, they provide job training, and even provide transportation to those who need to get a job interview. read more
