Union Station Homeless Services - 2025 Summer Sampler Food Festival. Another volunteer opportunity with a great organization.

I was fortunate to win a ticket from Yelp for Union Station Homeless Services' annual fundraiser…read more My ticket allowed me to participate virtually in the Roarin' 2021 Evening for the Station event and silent auction and also included a boxed meal from Porta Via. Union Station Homeless Services is a nonprofit committed to helping individuals and families facing hunger, poverty, and homelessness in the community by providing the tools and resources they need to rebuild their lives. Last year, during the pandemic, they helped over 1,000 people find homes and employment. The day before the fundraiser I stopped by their office to pick up my boxed meal from Porta Via. Porta Via is a casual Italian market, deli, bakery & restaurant located in Pasadena. My meal consisted of roasted vegetable skewers, orecchiette pesto pasta salad, and mixed greens with feta, cranberries with a light vinaigrette. (Grilled Salmon and Grilled Chicken Kabobs were the other options.) Everything was delicious! This year's Evening for the Station was a hybrid event held virtually and in person. The in-person function was held at the University Club Pasadena. Entertainment for the evening featured performances from the Gerry Rothschild Band and a variety dance show by Todd Elliot Entertainment. Union Station's CEO Anne Miskey told us about all the wonderful work the nonprofit does. Gerry Rothschild mentioned that he also volunteers for Union Station Homeless Services and serves lunches every Thursday. There were some technical difficulties with the live feed but, overall, it was a very enjoyable event. The music was good, the dancers were fantastic, and there were some great items available in the silent auction, which I did bid on. Thank you so much Megan & Yelp for the opportunity to enjoy this experience.

The orientation is about 30 minutes, after that the fun begins! During the AM shift, I helped load grocery carts filled with food for families and organized a cabinet. Free street parking. About a 10 minutes walk from Allen station. Remember to wear sneakers and comfy clothes.

My kids and I have volunteered for many years at this food bank. It is a lifeline for so many…read morepeople in need in our community. It's incredible how much food they distribute and how many families they help. I see on their social media how they give holiday gifts to children in need, help with back to school supplies and vouchers, dental cleanings, vet clinics, mobile showers and so much more. Many of the people who work here are volunteers, and even the paid staff don't earn much - I know of some who have been past clients wanting to give back. I have seen the faces of gratitude of some of the clients who come here for help. Whenever I come here I have a renewed sense of faith in human kindness and generosity, seeing the impact this organization has and the generosity of so many volunteers and donors, trying to help those who need it most. I'm sad reading the negative review. I also imagine people are quicker to complain on yelp even for free services than to show their appreciation. I also understand it must be truly frustrating for people who are hungry and/or struggling to survive to have patience when things don't go smoothly as life is already so difficult to bear. But I truly believe that the people working at Foothill Unity are doing their best within the constraints or limited resources they have and that they are also dealing with tough and stressful situations all day. I think it is unrealistic to expect a charity that is dependent on volunteers and has limited resources to be a well-oiled machine. In my interactions with those who work there, I believe they are doing the best they can, and I am inspired by all the amazing things they do.

Unfortunately, I have never experienced the pleasure of owning some type of an animal. Thanks to mama Flora. She had always injected the fear in me. Not to get close, it will bite, attack, harass.. I have few friends that do own dogs and cats. One of my friends wanted to go check out this place and see if she could adopt a cat and replace the cat that she had that passed away 6 months ago. She couldn't wrap her head around the devastation of losing her cat Katy. With that being said, she asked me to go with her to this animal shelter and see if she could adopt a new cat. I agreed and went there like 2 weeks ago. There was this one cat that she instantly fell in love with, did all the paperwork with their staff, got all the information pertaining to the vaccines, immunizations, medications, & vet information. All the employees were caring, nice professional and helpful. The shelter was nice and clean. Established in 1903. They also do dog training, have pet supply store, animal control, workshops & kids programs. She had tears of joy in her eyes after adopting her new cat and named her after her late cat. For me, all this was new. Who knows, maybe one day I will adopt a cat and give it to my mama and she will get used to the animal.. hours of operation are 9:30am-5:30pm. Seven days a week. We parked outside and don't know if they have parking or not. The entire process was quick, fast, effortless, and seamless. Good luck to my friend & to her new cat!! Thank you staff at this adoption rescue center and Pasadena Humane!

I have volunteered with Pasadena Humane for about three years, so I'm not writing this lightly…read more Today I brought in a stray dog I found, hoping for basic intake support and guidance. The only assistance provided was a microchip scan, and I was not given any meaningful direction or help afterward. I left feeling dismissed during a situation where I was actively trying to do the right thing for an animal in need. As someone who has previously supported this organization, I was genuinely disappointed by the lack of communication and care in that moment. I understand shelters can be busy and overwhelmed, but clearer guidance and a more supportive approach would make a big difference for people trying to help lost animals. I hope this feedback helps improve how situations like this are handled in the future.

They treat you like criminals instead of patients who were placed here to be cared for by the staff while staying at the facility in the first place . When they say they don't have beds available and that they are at capacity, it's all lies . There was at least 3 open beds at all time while I was unfortunate enough to be placed there paid for by Kaiser. The open beds and furnitures were covered with a thick layer of dust because no one had stayed there for months if not for years . During the 2 and half days of hell I had to endure staying in a room that had no ac (repeated request to switch to other open beds was denied for no reason ) the staff were abusive using foul language to provoke you so they can find an excuse to "discharge" you for violating the house rules so they can take all your money without doing their jobs . This place is ran by a bunch of ghetto criminals that's only here to verbally and physically abuse you and steal all your money !!!! Look else where !!!!!!
