Paraiso Azteca is the definition of decent food. There's nothing amazing about it but it's not bad either. It's right in the middle. What sets them apart if you ask me however are their range of options and affordability. It is reaaaaaaallllly hard to find Mexican restaurants or taquerias that still sell regular sized tacos for $3 nowadays. It has become the norm for places to use mini tortillas and sell them for $4 minimum while giving you an option for the regular sized tacos at an upcharge. At Paraiso Azteca, that's not the case and I really admire them for sticking with it. As y'all can see, I had their food years ago and for some reason I never ordered again even though I clearly enjoyed it. I think I might have confused them with a different spot that had terrible tacos and they somehow ended up on my "don't order" list. It wasn't until I revisited this page and saw my review that I realized I messed up. I lowkey kicked myself when I checked their online menu and saw those prices. All that time I let pass, ordering from more expensive places when I could've been a regular! I immediately placed my order and got another tostada de Tinga, and three tacos: chorizo, al pastor and bistec. Now im going to be honest. The tostada was just as I remembered. No complaints or notes. The Tinga was perfectly spiced, just the right amount of salt with a hint of smokiness from the chipotle peppers. The tacos were a great size and PACKED with meat but so much flavor was lacking, I can't lie. They weren't bad per se, but I remember them being better. The Al pastor needed salt. The bistec was a cheap cut of beef and also needed salt. The chorizo (which is usually my favorite filling) left me disappointed. I always leave it for last and while it was okay, it wasn't great. Maybe I caught them on a bad day, I will most definitely be giving them a few more tries as I want to order other tacos as well as their tamales and roasted chicken. read more

I cannot believe I've yet to review one of my most longtime constant neighborhood favorites! Paraiso Azteca has such cozy, reliable, and happy dishes of anywhere in this very diverse neighborhood where I've lived for 9y. Despite immense competition in Mexican fare, including literally across the street from an unnamed far newer vendor, Paraiso is a neighborhood institution which always delivers no matter core Mexican fare or newer fare like breakfast (a recent trend among Hispanic places) or American stalwarts (beefsteaks, sandwiches, etc. sort of bodega-like). Their core of Mexican fare is wholesome with ingredients visibly procured with local care as their kitchen is in the open. I today got my faves, bistec tostadas which are always soft meat with perfect frying and the bistec platter which is a huge steak portion with similarly generous rice and beans (non-refried type, just pinto cooked with pork sauce) and these are so totally satisfying everytime. I realized I tend to order here when I'm ill or when the holidays aren't happy which is what's happened again, raising my mood considerably. They've been a longtime (9y to my knowledge with many more per neighbors) stay of the community. It's initially known to most for being directly across from the B/Q Kings Hwy station CI-end exit at the B2/31 bus stop, but its customer's loyalty is from heartfelt cooking and staff alike. I was hesitant on being a customer, given the mixed Yelp reviews. But, I was glad I tried this place! I ordered the (breaded chicken) Milanesa de Pollo Torta, Flor de Calabaza Quesadilla, and green chicken tamale. The order took over a hour to arrive, which was the reason I gave them 4 stars instead of 5. I think they should stay true to the said estimated times because we have remote work/ time frames. I've had so many bad tortas in Brooklyn so I didn't have high hopes. Surprising, the torta was delicious! There's no overriding/ conflict between the flavors. I can taste every ingredient and it's well balanced. The size of the torta was big than I expected as well, which is definitely a plus. On top of that, the price is not as high as other places that sell it for $9/12. The chicken tamale was not super super spicy. It was eatable and easy to digest. I feel like it'll be an accessible and convenient item to bring to lunch for work. It might be drier than the other places i've tried tamales at but I actually like it this way. It makes things less messy. The Flor de Calabaza Quesadilla tasted like a chalupa to me. The squash blossoms had little taste and it wasn't the quesadilla I expected it to be so that's the only item I won't try again. This is a neighborhood Mexican spot with inexpensive prices perfect for takeout. However, depending on the dish you will either love or hate this place. All else aside, their servings are highly generous. The good: -Their chicken or beef burritos are filling and extremely delicious. Their secret is in their rice, which is packed with flavor; I can safely say that is the best yellow rice I've had lately. I also like the addition of jalapeños in their burritos. -For $1.25 a pop, cheese and pepper tamale is a good side order. -Breakfast items are hearty and delicious. For a large platter with eggs, home fries, pancakes, AND your choice of meat (go for the bacon), you pay $6, a complete steal. Similarly $3.50 gets you a filling bacon, egg and cheese roll, and trust me it is better than your typical bodega sandwiches. The bad: -Their breaded chicken was extremely dry and tasted a bit rubbery. Seasoning on the breaded chicken was just off. The rice and beans were the only things that salvaged that dish. And the ugly: -Their tacos. Worst tacos I've had in my life. Chorizo and the spicy meat were both so dry, it was hard to distinguish one taco from the other. They clearly have been cooking on the stove for the whole day, and I must have been the first poor customer to decide to order them. I always see that this place is crowded in the mornings. So I tried it one day and was very pleased with my experience. No frills place that has amazing coffee and bacon egg and cheese sandwiches on a roll. They also have pastellijos and a variety of other meals that I haven't yet tried. Ok, being from the West Coast, I had a favorite food and it was Mexican. As I grew older and experienced a more diverse culinary palate, I tried to stay as far away from Mexican restaurants. But as I am coming here more often (and I live in Manhattan!) , I realized, waaait a sec... I thought I wasn't into any Central American types of cuisine. I'd actually prefer to give this place a 3.5 based on no chips/salsa and take-out vibe, but since the food was pretty good they get graded on a curve. I've had several different tacos, all of which were piled high with meats and chopped cilantro/salsas (no guac) and a side of refried beans, which were watery and bland. I thought they did a good job with the meats, but the sides/options were lacking. Just ate there for the second time and the second time was much better than the first (my first time was well over a year ago). I had the beef enchiladas with mole sauce with rice and beans as well as guac with chips. The guac was very fresh and it was EXCELLENT and I would definitely order it again. The enchiladas were also very good and what a huge portion (it made for two meals for me). The mole sauce was a bit on the spicy side and I discovered it was due to finely diced jalapenos. If its possible to order the mole sauce without the jalapenos, it would have been much better (at least for me as I am not a huge fan of jalapenos). I also requested raw onions on top of my enchiladas and they accommodated me. I also should have asked for a little cojita cheese and/or crema or something similar on top. That would have made my dish perfect. The place was very busy with two families seated at tables and lots of delivery orders being taken or going out. Lots of people working behind the counter as well cooking or taking phone orders. The woman who took my order and the other who gave me my order when it was ready was extremely nice. They ran little late with the delivery (Took them about an hour), but they are still one of the best Spanish food who deliver in the area. Heavy Burrito (And by heavy I mean loaded with meat and other staff), and fresh Tacos (That came with Lemon (Not lime) cut in a way that you can really squeeze it. I tried this place for the first time yesterday and am on the fence. I ordered beef flautas, which were exceptional. The meat was well seasoned and the shell was fried perfectly. I'd definitely order this again and likely will in the future. I also ordered a cheese quesadilla, which I was less than impressed with. The tortilla was okay, but the cheese inside wasn't melted. It's like they cooked the tortilla and then at the last minute grabbed a block of cheese from the fridge and shoved it in. It was also pretty bland and lacked seasoning; I will say that this is partially my own fault, though. It came with a side of salsa which definitely would have added flavor, but it was just too spicy for my taste so I didn't use it. This place gives generous portion sizes, as both of my dishes were large and priced extremely well. The delivery, as others have said, was a slow. This didn't really bother me though because the timing was reflected accurately when I placed my Seamless order; it's not like they lied and said it would arrive quickly. When the delivery actually arrived, it was really confusing. The guy called my phone and told me he was here. Thinking that maybe he didn't have my apartment number, I gave it to him and told him to buzz in. I waited and my door never buzzed, so I tried calling him and it went to voicemail. So, I went downstairs to my main entrance and didn't see anybody. I called him again and, like the first time, it went to voicemail. Thinking he may have gone up the elevator while I was coming down the stairs and we missed each other, I went back to my apartment. Again, no sight of him. Finally, as I was waiting in my main entrance getting ready to call him for the third time, I saw him get out of a car. He was very friendly, but it kind of annoyed me that he expected me to come to his car to pick up my food. To me, delivery means you bring it to my door (my apartment door, NOT the building door). Overall, I'd definitely give this place another chance. I'd like to try a few more dishes before I give a thumbs up or thumbs down. Through GrubHub, we ordered a couple of burritos and an assortment of tacos. My daughter lives for good Mexican food and said the Carnitas Taco (pork) was one of the best she's ever had! She also had a Carne Azada Taco and a marinated Chicken Taco, and both were outstanding, but the pork one really stood out in her opinion as her favorite from anywhere else she's tried, including El Mexicano. The Carne Asada Burrito was absolutely delicious and had an authentic home cooked taste that just blew my mind! The seasoning was perfect, great spice and super fresh ingredients. It was one of the best burritos I think I've ever tried. I completely devoured that in about 90 seconds. Lol! The Chicken Burrito was also out of this world! Ordered the Al Pastor and the enchilada spicy meat tacos. The meat was a little dry but the apicy meat was spicy. They also included some spicy salsa verde and that was even more spicy. $2/lb for chicharrone. Bought 2 pounds of the stiffest pork skin ever. So far great place. I ordered delivery from this place at 10pm on grubhub tonight. First of all the 2 Sope that I had ordered, which clearly say they include pollo on grubhub, had no meat. I don't speak Spanish but I know pollo means chicken and I ordered 2 of these. So basically the cook forgot a main ingredient, and instead I received 2 servings of bean and lettuce on an old tortilla. To add to the pain of paying for something different than I received the tacos were served on shells that seemed as if they had been hanging around all day and radishes that were completely dried out. i'm very upset I didn't get to eat my Sope and couldn't enjoy my tacos (I ordered 3 chicken and 3 steak to split with company). This is a terrible example of Mexican food! The food looks and tastes like its like it has been sitting around all day. My go-to spot when I'm craving Mexican in my hood. I've seen this spot change ownership over the past several years from being a kebab shop to a deli but it seems that they finally have it right with serving Mexican dishes. They also do breakfast stuff, burgers, rotisserie chicken and more but their Mexican items are the best things to order. There is seating, should you want to eat in. The place is nothing fancy and the people that work here are nice and friendly. Cheap and satisfying, I don't ask for much more when I pop in for take out on the way home. When a customer needs something done, it should get done. When a customer calls over the phone to order some food, it should be started right away especially when the restaurant was not busy at all. On a Sunday evening at 7pm, I had called this place to to order simple tacos over the phone. I get there in about 20 minutes and the tacos were not even ready nor cooked. Of course there is never any sort of manager around because people are to busy chatting in the kitchen, who knows about what. Nobody in there has the decency go even apologize or recognize the customer. I do not pay play the race card but I guess since I'm not from their culture I'm left for last or not even considered as a customer. This is not the first time this has happened. People hear especially the males are extremely lazy and take their sweet time. I've been in this industry way too long and I'm well respected to be treated this way with such unprofessionalism. A place does not mess with someone's order and decide to not cook it at all.
