My feelings eating at Paragon
John S.

Paragon means a perfect example of a particular quality, and this restaurant meets this definition. Award Pending! Outstandingly terrible service in a restaurant! If there was a way to be more unwelcoming in service I believe this place could, with little or no effort, do it. I don't feel singled out in this regard, nor do I believe there is something about me that they didn't like and yet I felt special and despised. If the food tasted like the service it would have tasted like garbage, but for some reason I cannot honestly review the food because the seasoning of the service was so overpoweringly salty I did not taste it. Other reviews have detailed the manner of their style so I will just say my experience was parallel. This is not a "they're having a bad day" sort of service, this is the sort of eternal afterlife is a Sartre play set in a restaurant type of experience. I look forward to future reviews by others willing to subject themselves. As for me, I will always be looking for another restaurant to usurp their accomplishment in rude. Since I abhor giving bad reviews I award this restaurant five rotten stars!

Chicago Maki, Green Curry, Pad Kee Mao, Egg Roll

Was craving Thai food one day and was able to find this neat spot in Evanston. Super affordable and easy to order during this pandemic. No issues with pickup and prep time was accurate. Food wise, it definitely fulfilled my craving. The curry was the best, good kick and good consistency to mix with rice. Maki was okay, but it was to be expected. Pad kee mao was sort of disappointing because the ratios were off. Over half of the dish was onions and peppers. Very little noodle (my fav part), BUT there was a lot of chicken (: Overall, you get what you pay for in terms of food, but service was great!

Pad Thai here is a must! I have had beef and chicken pad Thai for delivery and take out and it has been great both times. Most recently I had the lunch special which came with an egg roll, edamame, crab Rangoon, or fried tofu. I opted for the egg roll. It also came with a small salad and miso soup. While everything tasted great, I would've preferred a larger pad Thai serving without the miso soup and salad. Regardless, I will be back.

Ordered for takeout & was pretty disappointed. The food looked decently packaged but the quality was opposite. All the rolls fell apart as they were picked up, the amount of fish in each was sparse, and overall just not tasty. Kind of upset I spent as much as I did; I would almost equate this to grocery store sushi.

Tried this place twice and surprised me every time. Their chef definitely knows how to create the best version of each dish.

The shallot rice with vegetables had no vegetables at all and tasted as if it was premade and warmed up again in the microwave. The shallot rice with beef was the same and contained tiny bits of burned beef. The sushi was not fresh and the crispy spring rolls were akin to dog treat sticks. The food is expensive and some of the worse food I've ever had. While I appreciate the business owners detailed response, there are contradictions. When ordering the shallot fried rice from the restaurants website on July 2, vegetables were included as an option. Today vegetables have been replaced with herbs. Nevertheless we chose the available vegetable option therefore vegetables were requested. The restaurant received our vegetables request as indicated on the pictured receipt and packaging. We received herbs and rice but no vegetables. We did not order through a third party delivery service. We placed the order through the restaurant website and I arrived early to pick up the food. I hope that the owner is able to receive my feedback constructively and take accountability for the issues my family encountered with the restaurant.

But we also noticed their strong take-out game. The menu is broad and expansive. The service was super helpful. I noticed (at another table) they were asking what the difference between the types of noodles were and the chef, rather than try to explain it, went to the kitchen and brought out both types of noodles to show them and allow them to compare! The food came out quick and the flavors were great. We asked for mild for most dishes and the flavors came through nice. The seafood in the kao pad (fried rice) was large and generous. The textures were a little iffy. The salmon in the curry seemed to be cooked a bit hard and the beef in the crying tiger appetizer felt like it could be charred harder. The pad thai, while tasty, seemed more mushed than not. Still, great flavors all around.

In my honest opinion, you can't mess up pad thai so this was a let down.

The first time I visited I didn't realize they close at 8:30 pm so I arrived at 8ish and the server/owner snapped at me that they will be closing their doors by 8:30 pm so I hurriedly ordered a delicious chicken satay appetizer with peanut sauce presented beautifully in a tiny goblet and a crispy curry puff which was extremely good too. I loved the thai iced tea even though it was served in a small glass with lots of ice. The reason I am leaving a two is because the owner made me feel like I was not welcomed and an inconvenience because I arrived half an hour before closing. It was hard for me to savor the food based on the fact that the owner who is also a server to cut costs made it clear she needed me to leave when they start the closing process so I rushed through my first ever dining experience there. Today was my second and admittedly will be my last. The owner gave me the same icy indifferent attitude as if I wasn't genuinely welcomed. The first time I dined there I had a feeling she was the owner so I didn't tip and this time the owner lied to me when I mentioned I knew she was the owner when she practically DEMANDED a tip after my disappointing dining experience. She said she works there as s server and doesn't have a clue who the owner was completely lying to me so I would be quilted into leaving her a tip. First of all I arrived here at 1:30 and she coldly stated they close at 2pm no exception. There was no separate lunch menu and she let me decide what I wanted and didn't even take my order till 1:40pm I chose the crazy noodles with beef and you either get a tiny portion of cucumber salad or an egg roll appetizer. When my food arrived there were no chopsticks just forks and the plate was very decorative but the portions were extremely small. The egg rolls were good but each eaggroll was the size of your pinky finger and you get 3 tiny pieces. I ate quickly and when I got up to pay she asked me how id like to tip. I knew she was the owner so I felt it was HIGHLY inappropriate to hustle a guest for tips especially if you own your own restaurant and you're serving to cut costs by not hiring a server to work for you. Again I thought it was a tacky move on her part to insist on a tip and then lie to me and say she doesn't know who the owner is in real life. I don't like the owner's lack of business ethics so I will not be returning here especially because the lunch deal is extremely overpriced and doesn't include a side of salad or rice or beverage. She never once smiled at me nor made me feel like a welcomed guest so I don't feel like returning to support a business that treats their customers with such disdain and genuine unkindness. Also let me Reiterate even if the food is good my meal was soured by the negativity from the owner who works here as a server too to cut costs. My meal was $18 ish dollars not much of a deal when you realize the plate portions are small and the appetizer is miniscule too. What spoiled it for me was her lack of kindness and no chopsticks. Just not the vibes I'm seeking. I don't like the fact that the owner lied to me about not being the owner so very sketchy!

I've been here for lunches and dinners as well as simply just to stop in and pick up a drink. To be Frank I normally only come to downtown Evanston on Sundays when parking is free. And sharing this review because this place is so super consistent when it comes to their drinks and Boba. The food menu like the drink menu is super long, super detailed, and basically just about anything you can think of they will have or you can possibly create. So no matter what your taste or your allergy you can definitely find something to eat here. I however typically come here quite often just to pick up a drink and go and the service is very quick. You don't come here for super friendly service. I can tell you that. But you do come here for really great tasting drinks. If you google them, they have multiple locations now that have grown over the years. And this particular Evanston location this is also not their very first one in Evanston. However, my most recent visit actually changed my impression! My friend suggested Joy Yee for dinner, or honestly I probably wouldn't have thought to come here. She ordered a chicken noodle dish, while I got the eel and shrimp fried rice. The eel fried rice was actually the one good dish I remembered from my previous visits, so I decided to play it safe. We also ordered the fried squid tentacles to share, and those were surprisingly delicious! They were fried until crispy while the squid itself stayed tender, with a really nice scallion and garlic aroma. Definitely the highlight of the meal. My eel and shrimp fried rice was also good. Nothing mind-blowing, but the texture was nicely balanced. The rice had a little moisture to it without becoming soggy, and each grain still stayed nicely separated. I did remember the eel pieces were larger in the past though... My friend liked her noodle dish too. I also used to come here for their avocado smoothie, which comes in an unbelievably jumbo size. It's good and I still recommend it. Service was alright, nothing spectacular but nothing to complain about either. The environment is also much better than their old location just a few steps away. The large windows bring in a lot of natural light and make the whole space feel nicer. This visit was definitely better than I remembered. Glad my friend convinced me to give it another try!

The place has kind of a nice pub feel which is a bit of a juxtaposition for Thai fusion but it is nicely appointed and comfortable. Service: Our server was very kind and warm, and always appeared at the perfect moment to help us out. Food came out INSANELY fast and was hot and fresh. Food: We had the poke and wings as appetizers and both were very large and tasty. Wings were sticky, sweet, hot and savory... perfect with a beer. The poke comes with delicious rice and could easily be someone's entree and they'd be very happy with it. Happy to say our fam favorite entree (the ginger chicken salad) is just as I remember if not better due to the fact that it seems to have doubled in size!
