So I rolled the dice given the reviews and came out on top! First things first, the food. Overall the food was very good. Ingredients fresh and made to order. Started with basic burrito and added avacado, and potatoes. Solid choice. What I did see before and can now confirm is the red salsa is fire!! Not super hot but really tasty. Like I had four salsa containers full lol. Service: was great. Greeted when I entered, order taken. Overall very nice and fast. The inside decor was sorta confusing for a Mexican cuisine joint. This place totally met our family's needs. They have meet for the carnivore, veggie options for the herbivore, and potatoes for carbivore. I am not sure what kind of magic they cast on their house tofu, but it is to die for. I was told it's sautéed in soy sauce and nutritional yeast, but it does feel slightly more complicated. The 10 year old carbivore loved her backed potato and the carnivore could hardly move later due to breakfast burrito induced food coma. We headed to Petaluma for the antique fair and decided to stop into Sebastopol for lunch. I loved the vibe of this restaurant. Super cute little shack and loved the music and vibes. We started off with the chips and salsa, the chips were so flavorful and fresh and we loved the salsa. I ordered the potato burrito and loved it! Added sour cream and avocado and added some freshness. Potato's could have been cooked a little longer. My dad and sister liked their burrito and salad, but my mom said her tacos were a little bland. Really disappointed in my take-out order tonight, probably about a year since I last ordered from them. My stuffed potato came with the sour cream I requested be omitted (no dairy allergy so I was able to scrape most of it off) and the potato was undercooked by about 20% - the fact that we came in at around 5 before the dinner rush left no excuse for it. I like this place when I feel like eating a little healthier. They make Mexican dishes but do healthier versions of them. I can definitely feel the difference in my stomach when I eat here. Flavor is really good and it makes me feel better that they don't use oil just to make the food taste good. It's all about the spices here! The food is high-quality, tasty, the service is exceptional, and the ambience within the restaurant makes you feel right at home. The price of the food may be a little high, but it is well worth it. We stumbled upon this restaurant as we headed back to the Bay Area after a weekend getaway. I was immediately drawn to the vegan stuffed yam. It came with black beans, pico de gallo, avocado and greens. I added a few splashes of their delicious house made red salsa and enjoyed every bite. This has been my go to Cali-Mex restaurant for nearly the entire time I've lived in Sebastopol. They are one of the few places I can think of that has idea of protein options, including tofu in their burritos, tacos, quesadillas, nachos, and even baked potatoes. Their food is absolutely, delectable and comfort food as far as I'm concerned! I had an odd interaction today with an employee. I tried to call later on to see if I could have a quick conversation with Ivis, with whom I was friendly, only to learn that she's moved on. The person who answered the phone passed me off to a brand new employee instead. The employee I engaged with earlier today made a comment implying that ADHD and other neurological disorders are basically the result of "not enough outdoor time", in other words, bad parenting. This is a common misconception and one that my ex-husband held over the 15 years we've worked to get our son - who's been an honor roll student many times and attended Berklee College of Music at 16 years old - through school and now college. I was pretty stunned at the time and wasn't sure what to say. Can't miss the lime green building and palapa as you drive by on Hwy 116 south. Papas and Pollos is an unusual name, and the food is unusually good too. It is the best mexican food restaurant around the sebastopol area. Everything is fresh daily including the fish and the greens. And surprise... the russet and sweet potatoes filled with various mexican toppings are fabulous. Never tried it before eating here, but carumba! They are delicious. Love the jumbo shrimp tacos and my husband is a big fan of the Cheese (pico de gallo and black bean) potato. The black beans are made every morning and are mild but super special. Red and green salsas and fresh limes are available on the side bar. They don't serve dessert every day but if they are, try it! Fresh strawberries and outstanding Mexican cream. I'll start by saying that their online menu photos are not current prices... add dollars to everything that is on the menu. Having said that, I called because I had poor Wi-Fi connection on my cell for their website. I wasn't able to look at the website to see what the menu was for me to be able to order. So when I called, and said, I would like to have a Carnitas burrito and asked if they have one that comes with avocado and sour cream, like a super burrito. She said yes, ok fine, that's my husband's order now I wanted to order my food. I said, do you have anything like a taco salad or tostada, she said no. Just a flat no. When I said ooookaaayy! She appreciated that I wasn't exactly happy with her tone so she offered that she could give me a house salad. Ummm huh?? So, I apologized again for not knowing the menu because she was very short with me and seemed perturbed. So then I said OK could I just have an ala carte enchilada, she said no we don't make enchiladas. OK so... This is where I got confused. I wound up saying never mind just a burrito please. Here's the thing, if I were the owner of this restaurant, I would want an employee that would say wait a second I think I can give you an order of nachos and put our dinner salad on top of that and crumble some cheddar on top. Would that be delicious for you! Yes, yes, that would be terrific! But instead, she let me hang up with just ordering one meal instead of making money for the restaurant and making the customer happy at the same time. I guess people don't think on their feet anymore or give a crap about the customer, I think that's where we're at. So now here comes the part that really annoyed me. When hubs went to pick up said burrito... common size, nothing special... She told him it was $18.02. Not knowing exactly what was going on. He came back to the car and asked if I ordered some thing else because the bill came to $18 for his single burrito. (they don't even give you chips or salsa for F sake). Turns out the burritos price had gone up to $13 not $11 AND she must've charged for a side of sour cream and a side of guacamole, because that was the extra five dollars when I called to ask about the prices. There was little more than a teaspoon of each ; sour cream and guacamole. If you ask for sour cream and guacamole, be sure to get it in a little container on the side and it should be at least as much as they bring to the table if someone orders guacamole. Such bullshit. One other thing that can't go unmentioned is that the place is filthy. The door going in is just so gross. I didn't want to touch it. They've had multiple health violations as well. No thank you. Wilted greens are not a favorite of mine in a burrito. All of the food lacked seasoning. Portions were good size but it all needed seasoning. Black beans were so bland. Pork was ok, chicken was bland, steak was okay. That's the thing. None of it was BAD but none of it was GOOD. It was just...bland. Chips are okay. Pico is stupid expensive for a small cup. Discovered this place 5 weeks ago and have been driving here from Santa Rosa for 5 weeks in a row now. We love the " Chicken on a Hot Tin Roof" burrito (delicious!) and of course their home made chips and salsa bar. The inside and outside eating areas are super fun and relaxed. The service is always friendly, and the husband/wife owners are super friendly and make everyone feel at home. Ambiance is great and the food is consistently great. My friends recommended this place and described it as "healthy Mexican food" so I was intrigued haha. Walking in, the decor looked like a mix of California surfer dudes and Mexico. There were surf boards everywhere, rock Hispanic music playing (?), and lovely bright colors everywhere. You order first then find a seat. We were the only ones there - it was around 8pm on a Saturday. F O O D: My favorite thing I ate were the chips. They were thick, crunchy, and tasted fresh. The salsa was great too! I ordered their chicken taco plate, my boyfriend and his buddy ordered carne asada yams, and my other friend ordered shrimp tacos. I was super disappointed with my tacos. They were extremely dry, and no matter how much lime and salsa I put on it, it didn't get any better. The tortilla also kept falling apart and the beans and rice lacked flavor. My friend said her shrimp tacos tasted plain, but the stuffed yams were a hit. They were super moist and my boyfriend gives it a 10/10 haha. I can't say enough great things about Papas y Pollo! I've been eating here for over 15 years and they continue to impress me with their fresh and delicious food and excellent customer service. My go to order is either the Chicken on a Hot Tin Roof burrito (seen above) or the tofu temptation burrito. I also love to make any burrito naked (no tortilla, sub organic greens) for a healthier option. The salsa verde is killer and they have many drink options available including a few local draft beers. Tried this place for the first time yesterday, and loved it! I had smoked BBQ port quesadilla--delicious! He had smoked BBQ taco plate--also delicious! Real cooking: could taste oregano, cumin... great tastes and textures. Quesadilla beautifully crispy. Real whole cooked black beans. Service a little slow although not busy... will chalk that up to real cooking from scratch. Cute, quirky, beachy palapas themed interior with cosy sports bar; huge fenced outdoor seating area. Fun little venue (thinking tiki hut, reggae music, chilled vibe) with good food, very reasonably priced drinks and friendly staff. Kid and dog friendly. The bbq chicken is very tasty.
