I thought this place was very good! Nice patio and they do a good job of blocking out the street noise from cars driving by. This was the first Mexican restaurant I've been to where they bring out a free bean dip with the chips at the beginning in addition to the salsas - really elevated the experience. The food was phenomenal, and everyone in our group really enjoyed their meals. The quality and flavor definitely stood out, and it's a place we would happily visit again. My only suggestion would be to improve the temperature inside the restaurant. We were seated in the bar area, and it was extremely warm with very little air circulation. Since we were dining with a baby and a 6-year-old, it made the experience a bit uncomfortable. Even adding a few fans in that area would make a big difference for guests. If you're visiting, I'd recommend requesting outdoor seating if the weather allows. Overall, the food was excellent, and despite the warm indoor seating, we'd definitely come back. read more

I had the carnitas super burrito without rice and refried beans instead of reg beans. Delicious. Other folks had fish taco platter- excellent, and chicken and beef enchiladas. Order the Elejante margarita or the chambord one, and enjoy! Chips come out with salsa verde, beans and salsa Roja. The staff is personable, funny and professional. Prices are extremely affordable. Outside, there is a large patio with fountain, bar and heaters. This is our new family go to. read more

We were really looking forward to trying this place out, but the experience was terrible. Throughout the meal, no one ever offered to refill our drinks. It was a warm day and our beer glass sat empty. Only three out of our four meals arrived. By the time the fourth meal finally made it to the table, the rest of us were practically finished eating. To top it off, we paid our bill and left a cash tip, only to later notice an additional 15% charge added to my credit card. We will not be coming back to this restaurant. read more

A Delicious Detour in Sebastopol While on a day trip north of San Francisco, we took a detour into Sebastopol for lunch. El Coronel was right there, and it looked like a good option because we had our little puppy with us. It was a beautiful afternoon, and they had outdoor seating available. El Coronel Mexican Restaurant was founded by Armando Coronel in 2002 and has been a part of Sebastopol's culinary scene since then. It has been a family-run operation for over two decades and serves tasty Mexican cuisine. El Coronel is known for their sizzling fajitas, delicious combinations, flavorful tacos, and burritos. They have a beautiful patio with a complete outdoor bar. The interior is beautifully designed and looks comfortable for individuals and small and larger groups. We started with an order of Guacamole, their House Margarita, and Hibiscus Tea. The Guacamole was freshly made, and there was plenty of it! We enjoyed the combination of fresh guacamole and chips. The drinks were good, too. We decided to share a Parrillada (which means Grilled in English) for the main dish. There was plenty of food. The meats (Beef, Pork, and Chicken) were all fresh, done right, and flavorful. It came with a plate of rice, beans, guacamole, sour cream, and fresh tortillas. I could not leave without trying their flan and was very happy I didn't! It was one of the better flans I have had in a while. The staff was very attentive and friendly. A gentleman, who I think may have been the owner or manager, stopped by our table and asked how we were doing. He was very friendly and welcoming. We enjoyed our experience, and as we left, I made a mental note to come back and try their Molcajete! It looked very good! read more

The servers greeted me with a smile and told me to seat myself. The ambiance is great, with Mexican music and beautiful, colorful decor. The food was served within 10-15 minutes and it was HUGE! Came here for dinner Friday night and was pretty disappointed in the food/experience overall. Arrived around 7:30 and waited right in front of the hostess/waitress for about 7 minutes before we were acknowledged. We were asked if we wanted outside or inside, we said outside and she said "go pick a table" ok. She came by very quickly with menus (mine had stale salsa on it) waited another 5 to 7 minutes for the drink order. About this time we started to hear grumbling from other tables about being "forgotten" So we kind of prepared ourselves for more of a wait. The food and drinks were ok, but $96 for 2? no appetizers, no dessert, just 2 entree's and 2 cocktails. Seems steep to me. I was really surprised, due to the good reviews. Maybe it was an off night, but it was not worth the price to me. Service and price are my main gripe. read more

Wow, wow and wow!! The food was outstanding I had the shrimp and crab burritos and the shrimp was done just right and the crab was enough to taste which is a big deal for me. George did an excellent job of service and the speed of the food coming out was amazing. The inside is gorgeous with the tables decorated with murals or paintings I didn't check which, but they are great. My wife had the carnitas which were outstanding also, she can't have peppers or spice so they were prepared just right. Margaritas were good. Just a pleasant atmosphere to enjoy. read more

Wow this was probably the worst Mexican food I've had in Northern California. Service also was not great. Been here twice and never again. There were multiple errors with my dinner order. I ordered a house margarita and it was all lime. Drinkable but not very good. Apparently the server put my order in as a to go order so it sat on the counter for who knows how long. When they finally realized what happened (sat waiting for about 30 minutes after all the customers had left), my crispy tacos were soggy. I ordered a tostada but the server entered it as a soft taco. She realized her mistake and had the kitchen make me a tostada but when I got the bill they charged me extra*. Even though it was their mistake. All of the entrees tasted like mole, WHY? I don't want cinnamon flavored tacos and it was so overpowering. My partners burrito tasted the same and she barely took a few bites and couldn't eat any more. I couldn't finish mine either and hate throwing food away. No way I could eat that, it was so bad. Server never came around for the check in an empty restaurant. I flagged someone down and another 10 minutes waiting for them to take my card. Ended up tracking down my server at the cash register closing out her checks. Positives... complimentary chips, the salsa was good. Portions are good for the price. *after complaining about the charge, the cashier did give me a discount. read more

Unbelievable that the yelp rating is this low. We were lucky to find this place via Google (4.6 rating there). Authentic food and decor. Amazing service, great classic Mexican food with large portions and reasonable prices. We had the nachos, enchiladas (chipotle and shrimp/crab), chile relleno and shrimp tacos. Everything was perfectly cooked, seasoned and fresh. House made chips and salsa were delicious as well and the only reason we had to pack leftovers. Can't say enough about the service. Would come back here for that alone given how hard it is to find warm, prompt service in Nor Cal anymore. Shout out to our waitress Magaly! I love mole'! I ordered the chicken mole' enchiladas, and although the mole' sauce was really good, the chicken in the enchiladas was old and kind of rancid, and there was nothing else in the enchilada. When I told the server, they said, "Yeah, our chicken can be a problem." I said, in future, you should tell people because I would have ordered something else. My companion enjoyed her fajita taco salad. They really should have discounted my meal, but they didn't. I emailed the restaurant to tell them of my experience before Yelping, but they did not respond, so I feel other customers should know. The service was good otherwise. read more

We had not been to El Coronel Mexican Restaurant in a long time and decided to stop. It was midday and not busy. We received great customer service and a large basket of chips, two salsas and a bean dip. All were yummy. My wife and I were amazed at the 4 item combo prices of $20.95! Wow, that is a great value. There is no way we could eat more than two but we like leftovers. We both ordered the 4 item combo and not surprisingly for us, we each had two Chile rellenos. My wife had a tamale and tostada and I had a cheese enchilada and chicken tamale. They had to bring our food on two plates. We really are fans of Chile Rellenos and were looking forward to these. They did not disappoint but they also did not wow us. The peppers tasted nice and fresh but the batter was really thin and there was too much cheese and it overwhelmed everything else. Don't get me wrong, it was good but not great. I would order again just not make a special trip to go there. The rest of the food was the same, good but not great. The value you get for so much food was great! We had a lot of leftovers and enjoyed them the next day. Outstanding! Food was so flavorful and brought out Quickly. Great Margaritas from their house to signature drinks. The service here was exceptional. Their team had us feeling like family from the moment we walked in. Our server was so friendly and great with recommendations. The entire waitstaff did so good. We love coming here! The food is exceptional! The staff is very courteous! We try to come at least twice a month! Last time we had to wait 15-20minutes for our food to be cooked! We were told that the doordash and the like get first dibs! Ok today we go back to our favorite Mexican food place and we were the only ones inside! It took at least 50 minutes to receive our orders! There are only so many chips you can eat for 50 minutes! Sad to say we will not be back! read more

We haven't been here in a while but we were looking forward to going back and having a small celebration on the patio midday over the weekend. The patio only had full sun no umbrella no shade tables so we sat indoors. In truth if we cared that much we should have made a reservation. So indoors it was. We sat next to the back window with a view out. The restaurant was just as clean and tidy as we remembered. I am really not a fan of sticky chairs and smudged table tops. Everything was squeaky clean from the tile floor to the water glasses. Chips and salsa was fresh and light no heavy oil no salt lick sensation instead right on par. We ordered and darn it things took awhile. A second beer, a refill of water, the appetizer...we had to stand up and ask for them after a 30 minute wait. Order was taken but food didn't come. Then one lunch arrived. We inquired about the other ordered food. After a while about 25 minutes, we inquired again and ten minutes later we asked it be made to go and to please bring the check. We guess the seating was the issue. We don't know if that is the case but they seem to forget about our table repeatedly. We will go back. We will try a different table and we will hope for the best. Forgetful as they were they were also apologetic and we didn't get the feeling this was a standard practice but rather hopefully a one off. read more

Cute family restaurant. Service was excellent for lunch. Tortilla chips come out with delicious avocado salsa, traditional red salsa and refried beans topped with cheese. Great start. She got the Smokey firey chipotle quesadilla which came with a generous serving or pico de gallo and guacamole. It was very, very tasty. I got the crab and shrimp enchiladas which were also delicious. Everything on the plate was very good, the black beans, rice and salad. The habanero pesto had a basil taste which was very nice and unexpected. It's easy to be a Mexican food snob in California, but this place has very good food and deserves to be packed with hungry patrons. We will be back. read more

I am a wedding planner and my client hired El Coronel to cater a casual wedding in Sonoma this weekend, June 22, 2024. The food was really, really good. The appetizers were prepared hot, and there was plenty of chips and salsa. There was both beef and chicken fajita, with freshly grilled corn tortillas to wrap them in, rice, beans and an amazing guacomole salsa that had nice spicy heat that lingered on the back of the tongue. The pico de gallo was fresh, and the salsa roja was terrific. Even better, though, the service was top notch. The bar never really got backed up, even with four different mixed drinks, and the sparkling wine was poured right on time. The food servers were quick, efficient, yet pleasant and always smiling. I would totally recommend El Coronel for a casual wedding, or any event where you would like delicious and very fresh Mexican food. read more
