    Portugués Nata
    Rafael C.

I never go to this bakery, it was a last minute need for some Natas (custard cups). They are a portugués pastry. I waked in, I noticed the natas in the display case, to my far right ( I didn't have a good view) I order them. When I get to the car I open the box and see the horrific and embarrassing product. I grew up on this traditional pastry and i also work in the food/bakery industry. I felt very embarrassed for the portugués culture. See picture (this is not a Nata) - it doesn't look appetizing at all. Would you eat it?

The most friendly staff and an amazing bakery! Pao de Mel specializes in a variety of Brazilian snacks, treats, and lunch options! From their many offerings such as acai bowls, salads, or sandwiches & burgers to the most delectable and rich brigadeiros around! One of their most elusive menu options is a Brazilian burger of monstrous proportions. Labeled "Mineirinho," this sandwich was topped with burger, sirloin steak, chicken breast, ham, mozzarella, bacon, corn, potato sticks, egg, tomato, and lettuce. Besides obvious structural problems of the sandwich, and the extreme clash of meat flavors, it was an overall great burger for $9. The bun was house-made as well and tasted very fresh.

Oasis was closed when I stopped by yesterday, so I drove a few more yards to Pao De Mel. It took about three tries to land a parking spot because there's probably seven spots max that is shared with a convenience store next door. The layout of this Brazilian bakery is simple--glass counter displays, large menu on the back wall, a hanging TV, and some tables; no frills. Pamonha ($4.50/ea): Yes--$4.50 each. I've never tried this before, so I was pretty shocked to know I was paying quite a bit for what I thought was merely a mini-tamale. However, this was pretty darn good! It's a sweet corn-based paste/dough with a cheese filling that is steamed in corn husks. The texture is soft and definitely looks like a Mexican tamale, but it is sweet. The cheese was nothing special--chewy and overpowered by the sweetness. Brigadeiro (Chocolate bonbon/truffles w/ Sprinkles): Chocolate overload--chocolate outside, chocolate inside, and chocolate topping. If you love sweets, then consider giving these a try. The fudge inside was thick and very sweet, a bit too much for me. However, I am not too fond of chocolate, so this may be just right for others. Pao Segura Marido (Ham and Cheese Bun): Pretty standard and pretty good. Ask for the buns with the cheese that is a little burnt if you like the extra chewiness and saltiness! The bread is soft, so don't let the appearance fool you; it's not dry. The ham was nothing special, but with the cheese and the bread, it makes a good snack. Pudim (Flan) (~$2.50/ea): Very creamy, soft, sweet, and rich! The way they make pudim here is exactly how I grew up eating it. I have no complaints--these were great. The main thing that bums me out besides the parking is the lack of pricing displayed; don't quote me on the prices I listed. I'd probably come back for the Pamonha, pudim, and the X-Tudo sandwiches they make.

The "doce de leite com maracujá" cake is AMAZING!!! (Dulche de Leche with passion fruit).

The cakes are AMAZING!!! Dulce de Leche with passion fruit is delicious!!! I also ordered a cake (dulce de Leche with nuts) for a party and was delicious!!! There was nothing left. If you like Brazilian cakes this is the place!

The service wasn't good. I bought a bread which was poorly baked and a bit expensive for the size.

Owned by Ruben's Empandas, whom has multiple locations found throughout NYC, Rio de la Plata is a wonderful addition to the area, replacing a previous Brazilian luncheonette. Upon walking in, you'll find dozens of empanadas encased in glass with a ton different filling options such as beef, sausage, chicken, fish, and vegeterian, and even dessert ones. Empanadas are what they're most known for, and often I've found are the best option to order. In addition to empanadas, they serve typical Uruguayan dishes such as the chivito sandwich and bizcochos. The chivito in Uruguay is often called the heart attack on a plate. It is a sandwich topped with steak, ham, cheese, eggs, lettuce, tomatoes, mayo, and olives, with fries on the side. Bizcochos are popular savory and sweet croissant, donut-like snacks found throughout Uruguay. I've tried their empanadas, bizcochos, and once the chivito. The empanada is a giant, puff-pastry, stuffed with the filling of your choice and is well-seasoned. At $2.50 an empanada, it's well worth it. Unfortunately, I've left here with a bit to be desired when it came to the bizcochos as well as the chivito. The bizcochos are sold on discount in the afternoon, and there are daily specials on a blackboard.
