I'm Celiac and it was really hard to find a place that's fully Gluten Free. I'm happy we have such a nice spot here in Kits. However, not all the pastries are good, most of them are mediocre, especially the savoury ones. And they cost a lot. But! Their Lemon loaf is the best I've ever had! It's perfectly moist and sweet, just amazing. And the bread is delicious when fresh. Hot chocolate is good too! The girls working there are very nice and kind! And I like the style of the cafe too, but honestly the design makes it look very old. read more

Can't speak for the baked goods but their savoury items were very good. Tried this place via the "too good to go" app. My $6 order included two hearty potato cheese and chicken crepes (dinner solved!). The crepes had just enough sweetness to compliment the delicious savoury filling. The person working the counter even threw in a GF cookie into the mix - what a nice touch! I've heard of Panne Rico as I had a girlfriend who was a celiac. But as Im not analphaltic from eating dairy although it does sound like it when I have bronchitis as I'll cough non-stop for 8 hrs, I haven't made my way here. But being inspired to write a blog about fabulous dairy-free alternatives, this seemed like a place worth investigation. Although I prefer almond milk, they do lattes with rice milk which probably suits more of their clientele who might be allergenic to some form of nuts. Their baked goods aren't made with wheat but rice flour so usually don't have the same lightness and could possible be more dense, athough I didn't try everything as I can eat wheat. Chocolate Utopia - dairy free- even sans diary allergy this is a decadent tasting moist brownie with nuts, cranberry and rum and then dipped in chocolate. It was so good I bought one for breakfast another day Most of their muffins are dairy free. The best which I found was less dense was the carrot which they make with or without cream cheese. It was as delicious as any ones I've tasted with flour. Banana walnut wasn't bad but a little dense, but the flavor was there. White chocolate raspberry was too dense for my liking. Although it's a tiny cafe they offer a big variery of other baked goods such as cookies, macaroons, pies, scones, daily lunch menu, squares, etc. It was apparent while I was enjoying my dairy-free indulgences, that Panne Rico has an established base of regulars as a continual flow of people came through, many buying 2-3 dozen of their favorite baked goods. They do custom baking and apparently keep a log of customer's allergies for future reference as I overheard the cashier tell a customer that the baker would know what his daughter could have. The little bakery that could. That could what, you ask? That could bring joy into the lives of gluten and dairy free peep's like me, for one thing. Today I had the very best carrot muffin I've had to date since being on the Celiac diet. Like a slice of real carrot cake it was. And there is also a chocolate one. I don't know what the rules are that determine what is a muffin and what is a cupcake, and I know I made a promise to myself not to indulge on cupcakes for a while. But when I spotted that beautiful "muffin" -and yes, it did have frosting on it., I lost control of my sensibilities once again. And the best and worst part is that low price. 2.85 --no way!... get outa here! Their chickpea rolls are still the best, which you can buy fresh or frozen, and now they also have cinnamon rolls and dairy free brownies. I could spend my last dollar in there trying one of everything. Fortunately for me I live on the other side of town. Addendum: The new bread they have, ("Sunrice") is insanely good. It's not dry, it's moist and springy like 'real' bread, only way more nutritious. Best non gluten, non dairy bread I've had in over 3 years. We were excited to hear about a gluten free bakery that had vegan options but once we got there we were very disappointed. There are only four vegan options: Blondie Brownie- super dry and tastes old, the pumpkin cookies- also dry and old but my daughter liked it enough to eat it, a vegan samosa that tasted like "old, spicy cardboard" and we have now toasted the Chia vegan bread and it is ok, my daughter is liking it enough to it for breakfast. I know it's challenging to make vegan food so we are grateful they are trying. Wasn't satisfying and hopefully they can make some better options for vegans. Super expensive too. read more

Small little cafe hidden in the mist of Kits. Very small but not hard to find . Ordered the Mac & Cheese and a gf brownie. I was a little scared when it came out of a plastic microwaveable container, but it was surprisingly tasty for a Mac and cheese (also gf) ! Great place to go if you need gluten free bakery or food items. They also carry some items that are dairy free as well so it's a great place to go if you know someone that has a dairy allergy too! Not the greatest g free bakery... its soooo expensive for what they offer. A lot of the food tastes old and was really bad. Hardly anything has a description of the ingredients.. so who knows whats in it. I had the 8$ dairy free trifle or whatever it was. So nasty, filled with fake flavouring and the gross cool whip. The samosas tasted old, dry and fell apart. At least the butter tart was good. Im not looking forward to going back.. I got the groupon and have one left :( Im sorry but 8$ for mac n cheese hahahaa no thanks. The guy at the counter was nice at least.. sorry but your prices need to change for the quality. We've been here three times within the last year and the sandwiches beat the GF sandwiches I've had in gluten-free eateries in northern California by price and portion. The full tuna sandwich was only $6.95, compared to one place in Davis that charges $9.95. Their facilities are completely gluten-free (hence the five stars). We have tried their tollhouse cookies, chocolate chip cookies, and a few other desserts. I will be back in a month and will make a special trip out here to get some cookies and treats. Vancouver needs more gluten-free eateries! read more

Oh Panne Rizo. You have the most wonderful selection of gluten free everything. I used to come by almost daily. The chickpea flour cheese and scallion buns are my kryptonite. When you have the pecan pie tart square things, my heart skips a beat. Your shortbread actually tastes like shortbread. All the edibles I've tried are marvelous. I really love this place, which is why it pains me to have to give anything less than a stellar review. The issue is the new girl they hired to work there. She just isn't friendly, nor does she do her job. Every time I go in now when she is working, there is an awkward exchange. The first time I visited during a time she was working, she did not acknowledge me even when I said HI! It was an awkward two minutes while I waited for her to finish cleaning something. She has no personality and made it seem like I was totally inconveniencing her by being there. Okay, I understand bad days. Everyone has them. I wrote that off. But nothing has changed. I go in less because I don't want to deal with cold service. I went in two days ago and she forgot my pastry she was heating up. Some lady from the back ended up bringing it out for me. I feel bad saying all of this, because the other staff is all so lovely. But if you experience the sam thing, don't worry - it's not a random act of rudeness against you, it's apparently now the norm :( read more

Celiac and gluten-free heaven in Kits! Yes, EVERYTHING in the store is gluten-free, and a lot is also dairy free. It may be a chilly autumn day, but when the clouds parted and that beam of sunshine found me sipping tea and enjoying a gluten-free brownie by the window this afternoon, I couldn't resist accompanying it with a scoop of their non-dairy chocolate ice cream. OMG as the young folks today say. It had more taste that an expensive dairy ice cream. To heck with waiting for summer. Three doctors recently diagnosed hubby as gluten-intolerant, so naturally finding Panne Rizo eased the "can't have" to "Wow - look what I CAN have in this bakery!" Choosing from various pizzas, three daily soups, veggie filled crepes, to almost every sweet treat you can imagine (cookies, cakes, pies, squares, etc etc etc.) this place is like a dream come true. Panne Rizo has been there for 13 years, and has the same lady baker since day one. Six months ago new owners Steve and Jim (brothers) arrived on the scene and along with their mom's adding her baking experience they have increased the selection with plans for even more new items. The cupboards are far from bare! We've pre-ordered a birthday cake for Tuesday. Can't wait to devour it! Easy to find just off the south side of Burrard Street Bridge, on Cornwall, one block from West 1st Avenue. Bonus they are open 7 days a week now too! read more

It's great that the restaurant is 100% gluten-free. It's really more of a bakery than anything, but they have some meal options as well and make a decent americano. My faves are the mac and cheese, lemon loaf, coconut dream, and breakfast wrap (with bacon). I'm not a big fan of the texture of some of their breads (esp. the chickpea bun), muffins, and cakes. They are often dense and dry, or dry and crumbly. There are other places in town who serve breads with a much better texture - I hope they improve this. The workers are nice, and the owner is very friendly. There are a few tables inside (and outside) and free wifi. read more

Panne Rizo has very nice service: they are friendly and helpful. I bought a Groupon voucher initially and have only used it once - I didn't realize it has an expiry, so take note of that if you want to use it. I've tried a few of their products: the chickpea roll, a sausage roll etc. I didn't rate those tremendously, but they are still pleasant - I have also ordered a cream cake on another occasion and that was great. Because I have celiac disease, they get five stars for just existing. Not everything is amazing - the muffins are a tad dry, the bread goes moldy thisfast and the pizzas are meh, but the sandwiches, cookies, cherry pie (!!!), tiramisu and cupcakes are so good I don't even try to make this stuff at home. The location makes it perfect for getting lunch to go and then hoofing it down to the beach to find the perfect bench in the shade. OMG where have you been all this time. I accidentally discovered this place 'cause I took a wrong turn. It was one of the few times my directionaly challenged self did the right thing. Everything here is 100% gluten free. This is my pastry heaven. Very easy to get to by taking either the #22 or #2 at Burrard station (10 minute bus ride). I was just telling myself the other day, "I wish I had gluten free ginger cookies to eat with cream cheese on a Sunday." They had this and more. I wanted to buy the whole bakery. Celiac heaven in Kits... if you have to eat gluten-free, this place is a must visit. Butter tarts were delish, take-home frozen cinnamon raisin bread was very nice after being toasted and there was a wide selection of other pies, breads and cookies. Cherry pie was nice but the butter tarts were definitely my fave. Pizza was tasty and wasn't overly dry like most rice crusts but it was a little greasy and there are only 2 types to choose from. Panne Rizo is 'the' best gluten-free bakery I've been to in the lower mainland. I have been to the bakeries in North Vancouver, the bakery on Hasting near Nanaimo, bakeries downtown, on and on and I cannot find anyone who comes close to the variety of foods I 'need'. I say 'need' because my body cannot tolerate wheat. And my brain cannot tolerate high prices. The major supermarkets are still price gouging and have not clued in to bringing their product prices down. I have spoken to the manager of Superstore on Grandview about it, for example and he has said he'll 'try' and pass on the complaint. But he's admitted that it takes a long time for a customer's 'suggestion' to reach the suits above in management. Panne Rizo's prices are far better and more affordable. Now for the products: Try their raisin bread and olive and cheese and and and (deep breath). Lightly toasted, with a little bit of butter or almond butter...delicious. A fantastic selection. I agree with some of the other reviewers - their pastries are truly the bomb (watch those waistlines). The staff: I have no problem with them one bit. I do agree with Juliet that sometimes a certain staffmember can be a tad aloof, but hell, go into any retail store and the 20 somethings are almost always difficult. It's a quibble. Go for the food. Steven and his family who run the shop are very endearing. Take my word for it go and dig in. *Oh, and one last nibble. They have a really good tuna melt there. It's not just a bakery. I called Panne Rizo and asked if there was any way they could deliver a cake that day, since it was my son's 30th birthday. The man said yes, that they had some ready-made cakes, and they could just inscribe my message on it and deliver. It was over $60 for a cake and courier delivery, but it sounded like a wonderful cake and I was so thrilled that they could deliver it that day. I paid for the cake online and received the receipt. I also contacted my son and made sure he would be around, and told him the courier would call before delivery. Well, that night my son called to tell me that the cake had not been delivered. He was worried that maybe they had delivered it to someone else, or simply ripped me off, since I am in the US. I was crushed that my son did not get the cake on his birthday. I called Panne Rizo, very upset, and the man said that the person who took my order yesterday had put "tomorrow" on the order, and he was so sorry. This seemed far-fetched since the first words out of my mouth had been "can you deliver a cake TODAY?" and that was the whole context of our conversation. Although the man was apologetic, he did not offer to refund any part of the $60+ cost for an 8" cake, and I was in no mood to pick a fight with him - I just wanted my son to know that I cared and get his cake. This is the best place to get your gluten-free products! It is a tad pricey but compared to other gluten-free food prices they are a good deal. I would love to see some healthy options in there too -hint-. I was served by a young man he was very pleasent. I think a tad shy but for his young age I expect that to be normal, he went out his way to help me. The best thing about this store is that the food tastes good. You acutally want to eat it! Located in my favourite Vancouver neighbourhood of Kits, is the dedicated gluten free bakery Panne Rizo. I've been frequenting the place for years since my diagnosis of gluten intolerance, but my visits have been more and more sparse lately(its not exactly close to where I live). I decided it was time I finally write a post about this great bakery. I placed an order with them through their website, which they are currently updating. It seems they are updating quite a bit, as they have changed ownership, done some redecorating, and are introducing some new products..yaay! I went to pick up my order and the owner had some samples for me to try. What a treat! He is looking for ideas for new products, so make sure to email them or message them on facebook if there is something you feel is missing from the gluten free world. They already have a wide range of products from breads, cookies, buns, pies, pizzas, and even mixes. Back when I was first diagnosed, I loved sitting on their patio and enjoying a lovely brie sandwich with their homemade buns. I also remember placing an order with them and having one of the employees personally deliver my order to my home in the boonies. Nice touch. This time around, I ordered a few sweets and a chicken pot pie. It was very tasty, and had just the right pastry for a savoury dish, not too sweet, not too bland. The coconut macaroons, biscotti, and cinnamon dots were delicious and addictive. The bar I sampled which I don't know what to call other than a rocky road bar was simply fantastic. The raspberry white chocolate muffin was good, but I felt it could use more raspberries and chocolate throughout, not just on top of the muffin. The cinnamon bun was also good, but tasted more like a muffin than a traditional cinnamon bun. The tollhouse cookies are my absolute favourite. I love this bakery! The only problem is that I've recently kicked the plastic habit and everything here is pre-packaged in plastic. I found the best gluten-free bakery when I went for a weekend trip to Victoria, Origin Bakery, that doesn't wrap their breads, cookies, cakes, etc, so I'm disappointed that I can't find anything like that here in Vancouver. I'll keep looking! Just because I'm gluten-free, doesn't mean I shouldn't have the same freshness and availability that someone who can eat wheat is allowed! read more

Went their on Sunday Sep 9th, 2012. Sausage rolls were DRY and not flakey at all, I spit it out. Cheese and chive bread was good and moist. I ot a 3rd thing but I can't remember what it was and it was only a day ago so that couldn't have been good either. I've had waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better. read more
