This was the first time I have ever been so upset with the service here. I usually go to the new Panera & love it more than anything. This Panera experience was horrible-from the very beginning, I ordered Rapid Pickup & CB waited 8 minutes before heading inside to see if my order was delayed-where I waited another 8 minutes to be spoken to. That's fine, but my order was sitting on the counter this entire time. I stood in line & watched as another customer cut in front of me to complain her drink wasn't ready & watched as the manager was called. He took his sweet time & when seeing his employees in a bind in the very beginning did not stick around to help. I know Panera holds itself to high standards with customer service & tried to play it off as alright telling the barista & cashier doing double duty that I appreciated her. She then gave me a milky white drink that did nothing to resemble an iced chia. Which again, I know how to make & she didn't even mix it. Just a very disappointing experience all around. I ended up being inside waiting for my order for a total of 20 minutes near the end of it & my order was completed long before. I will be going out of my way to not order from this Panera again. The employees were very friendly and accommodating. Especially during this Covid 19 pandemic. They offered curbside ordering and pick up, delivery and carry out. We chose carry out since we wanted to see the full menu on the wall instead of on the app or website. Our order was prepared quickly and was very delicious. We chose to eat after we got home which was about 20 minutes from the store and the sandwiched, Mediterranean Veggie, were very good and I was able to substitute the tomato basil bread with the whole grain bread. They were out of the baguette as a side option, but we usually get the apple or chips with a sandwich anyways. read more

I LOVE Panera. I used to work at Panera. Here's the thing... they NEVER get my order right. EVER. I don't order anything crazy, but if I ask for a side of cream cheese with my sandwich, I have a reason. I like to put the cream cheese on instead of mayo or sauce, and today, I received a side of mustard??? This is not the first time that they've messed up my order either. I love their food, but I want to RECEIVE what I ORDERED and what i've PAID FOR. It's so annoying knowing when I pull up that i'm probably not going to get what I want, especially on days like today, where I didn't have time to sit in my car and check everything. I paid for a turkey sandwich with a side of cream cheese and add cheese, and i received a sandwich with no cheese (even though I paid extra for it) and mustard instead of cream cheese (that I also paid extra for). Not what we are use to for Panera. We normally love Panera: great service, great food and clean facility. But at least for this location, it did not meet our expectations, The service was so-so: they were going thru the motions but not really present. The taste of the food did not snap out like it normally does. And in the bathrooms, rather than mopping up excess water that was pooled up on the floor, they just put up a 'caution' sign. It made it a gross experience to use the restrooms as you didn't know what you were really stepping on (pooled up mop water to clean the place that they were too lazy to pick up, or pooled up toilet water). Confused order taker, dry and stale bear claw and dirtiest bathrooms we've seen in a long while and we do a ton of road trips. Really disappointed bc we assumed a national brand like this would be more consistent. The floors in the restroom clearly had been addressed by the staff bc there were caution signs in both the men and women's bathroom and the floors were all wet and nasty. The women's had a big roll of toilet paper that had fallen off the spool. The cheddar turkey panini was good but was swimming in salad dressing. Food is like every other Panera , good soups and salads. Great baked goods!!! They were super busy but orders were coming out slow!! My order ended up being wrong, Cesar salad instead of the Asian sesame salad. But manager comped a free bowl of pesto pasta as an apology. Very good customer service but still was really slow. It is a good place for "fast food" that is healthier than your usual burger joint. Just don't try here if you are in a hurry during the lunch hour. read more

I could probably make this my shortest review ever by just leaving the sentence, "It's a Panera - you get it." However, I'll dive deeper. For the sake of Yelp. The Panera in Ames is a very acceptable place to go for lunch or breakfast. They have good selection of soups, salads, and sandwiches. It's all pretty much up to snuff with every other Panera location. One perk is they now offer delivery. This is a fairly new concept for our city (under one year). They don't proclaim to be 'Freak Fast' and it does take about and hour so, but that's okay. In-house, you'd think it would take just as long, ha! I've never really gone there when there hasn't been a DMV-esque line for ordering and picking up food. I would say the service is mediocre. They aren't really bad, just...as Millennials say, "meh". My one real complaint is the price. Personally, I think it is high for the overall food/experience. Bagels, coffee, etc. - that's all fair. When ordering meals though, We don't really eat here a lot because of that. In the end though... It's alright. It's a Panera - you get it. read more

My review is based solely on the poor service. We wanted to order food, but the person who took our order kept us waiting while she was joking around with co-workers. We ended up just getting a couple of coffees and a single scone, when we had intended to order meals. We simply didn't have time to wait for food to be cooked when she finally got around to taking our order. This was between 2:45 and 3:30 on August 12th. Horrible service! I understand business can be busy especially during peak hours of lunch. After waiting in line for five minutes I was asked if I had an order to pick up. I told them I was waiting to order my meal there, again I waited another five minutes. I was the only customer waiting there. I finally got to order my sandwich after being ignored. A usual wait for Panera is quick, I waited over 15 minutes for my to go order. Many orders from customers who had ordered behind me were served. Employees had little acknowledgement that I had been waiting half an hour. I am very unpleased with the service from this location as well as from those who work there. Would not go back. Congratulations to Ankeny, Iowa - you have the world's slowest Panera! When I travel, I work at the local Panera and/or local Starbucks (I'll toss in an Atlanta Bread Company too if/when it's available). Here's what I've learned: The Panera on Delaware Avenue, just across from Home Depot, is the slowest Panera I've ever been to. Here's why: 1. No one seems to give a sh*t about being fast. One of the workers I marveled at (his name is Harrison) was more concerned about complaining to co-workers and pouting than serving customers. The guy was working at least half as fast as anyone else. 2. If/when someone takes your order, they torture you with needless conversation. "Hello and welcome to Panera. May I take your order." - "Hi" would suffice "Is that all? Anything Else?", to which I answer "No." This is followed by "Can I interest you in a blah blah blah for only $3?" - WTF? I just said "No." etc. 3. The people who take my order also fill it?! I'm not a restaurant expert, but in my opinion you need one or two people that focus on taking orders and then everyone else fills the orders. That's how all the fast food / fast casual restaurants do it, and that's how most sit-down places do it too. However, at PANERA the person who takes your order also runs around the restaurant with their head cut off, scrambling to find some more whole milk for the espresso machine, bump into their co-workers next to the bagel slicer, etc. Here's an idea: have one person run the espress machine, one more run the bagel slicer, and have one person take orders. SIMPLE, right? The positives? 1. I'm using Panera's free Wi-Fi to write this glowing review. 2. The assistant manager (who's name I couldn't see) was a nice young woman who seemed to know how to hustle. I wish I had gotten in her line (which, incidentally, was the longest in the place...evidently all the regulars know she's fast). She should be put in charge, and anyone who loafs around complaining while customers are waiting should be put in the street. There are lots of great people looking for work right now - no need to tolerate laziness. read more

Pretty standard Panera joint, food-wise, and I'll never complain about the cinnamon toast crunch bagels. Ever. However..If you'd like to visit a zoo...go ahead and stop by this Panera location. I waited in-line for my one bagel order for what felt like forever while one employee took orders and another two did something that looked like just goofing directly behind her.. Finally the general manager was called to come out and help people. Standing close to the register, I felt as though my ear drums were going to burst from the sheer volume of her voice. Weird. So I sit down to eat, and the same loud girl who took my order is yelling to an employee from the counter to the other side of the restaurant with some story about a dead frog. I have never been to a panera bread that you had to clean your table. Every table was dirty. Some tables weren't usable because they had dirty dishes stacked on them because the return areas couldn't hold anymore. This was at 4 PM. There were only seven customers including two of us. Delighted to see a sign for Panera bread in Ankeny IA went out of our way to get to it. It took them almost an hour to make 2 simple breakfast brioche sandwiches. The sausage and cheese was vile and inedible with rubber eggs the dog didn't even want to eat it also the buns were over toasted. The ham was marginally better but again rubber eggs. Most things are frozen, not fresh. Not to mention they pick favorite employees and if you arent one of them they treat you like crap. The magment is also awful. They sit in the office almost an entire shift and dont help their employees. Store is really gross (coming from someone whose been in the back of the store) cookies arent always fresh. And soup , mac and cheese and tortellini are just a short list of things that are frozen. Hopefully they get some better management in there soon. Also the pay is crap. Did you know if you bring your own cup you get a discount on coffee? They only charge you for a refill so it's a little cheaper! The breakfast menu is very good with a wide variety of choices. This location tends to be fairly slow getting the food out so if you are in a rush in the morning it can be hit or miss. I love the hazelnut coffee but several times I have come in around 7:30 am and it is empty and have to wait for more which is frustrating. If service was faster and coffee was always fresh and hot I would stop more often. read more

I go to Panera Bread in Ankeny at 6 AM during the work week. The coffee is always ready and a full display counter of newly baked sweets are ready to sell. The smell of fresh baked bread is very enticing. I read my morning newspaper and drink my coffee and eat my bear claw. It is a great way to start the work day. The ANKENY location is just off I-35 at the Oralabor Road Exit 90 in Ankeny. You can just off the interstate to get coffee and be back on the road in five minutes. It is great location with plenty of free parking. read more

Panera Bread on Ankeny Boulevard and 18th is the worst run store I have ever seen. The district manager needs to get to that store and kick some butt. This is the second time we have gone to this store and the food was awful. The employees were in the back where they make food screwing around, laughing loudly and swearing. This time our food came out cold and the soup even had a skin on it because it was sitting so long. The sandwich had a few pieces of chicken on a tiny piece of bread with barbecue sauce on it. The sandwich was nothing like it was advertised. But yet those employees had time to do things they shouldn't be doing. How the manager could allow this type of behavior is appalling. The employees need to be reprimanded and the manager fired. There was another customer in the store at the same time as me and they screwed up their order also. My advice is to STAY AWAY FROM THIS STORE. read more

This place is very good. The grilled cheese has cheese that will give you a mouthgasm that will make you want to have a grilled cheese from there every day. The bread is very good and is kind of hard but it good. The pop is alright. The food takes a while because of the line but not unbearable, I've seen people walk in then out because lack of seating.
