One of my biggest pet peeves is not being seated at my reservation time. We had reserved a table for 5 last Sunday at 1:15pm. But even though we had a reservation, we found ourselves unwilling members of a hungry, irritated crowd of people standing in the lobby of Panda Inn, waiting for our table on Father's Day. We were not seated until 2pm, 45 minutes past our reservation time. Honestly, what is the point of having reservations if the restaurant is not able to honor them? I found my first experience at Panda Inn very irritating and unprofessional. The atmosphere of the restaurant feels a bit dated. The inside of the building almost seems like the inside of a church, with high ceilings and stained glass. The food was on the bland side. The salt and pepper calamari was underseasoned, lacking both salt and pepper. The crab wontons were actually quite good. I liked how plump they were. An order only comes with 4, so we had to order 2 portions to have enough for our party of 5. The orange chicken had a nice crisp to it but did not blow me away. Neither did the honey walnut shrimp. The lo mein was underseasoned. The beef fried rice was underseasoned and mushy. The beef did not taste like it was high quality. My favorite thing that I had was steamed white rice with soy sauce. That's not a compliment, by the way. I'm not sure if the subpar food and service was because of the Father's day rush, but I definitely did not feel much of an urge to return. While Panda Express should be more than a little familiar to anyone that has eaten at mall food courts before, what might not be as well known is that it was actually started as a fast food/to-go offshoot of Panda Inn, which was founded about a decade before. So, being that I've been of Panda Express ever since I was a kid, how could I not be curious about the restaurant that started it all? Especially after hearing that their famed Orange Chicken was supposed to be even tastier here! Compared to the photos of how their other locations look, this Panda Inn feels a bit worn and dated (like it's from the 90's). However, that's not to say this place is awful or lacking - they have a small lobby area with some nice benches for folks who are waiting for their table, a chill bar section, and a decent amount of seating inside for groups large or small. As for the menu, It's pretty in line with what you'd see at your average Chinese restaurant (starters, soups, stir-fried dishes, noodle dishes, fried rice, seafood, poultry, beef, pork, vegetarian, etc.) and, not surprisingly, includes pretty much all of the same dishes that Panda Express has to offer. -- RASPBERRY LEMONADE This didn't taste quite as "fresh" as we had imagined, but it was still refreshing enough. If nothing else, it had a nice raspberry taste to it and didn't seem too sweet. -- GINGER ALE So much better than the likes of Canada Dry or Seagram's. The taste of ginger in this was sharp with a slight bite that I liked. -- ORANGE CHICKEN - Crispy Breaded Chicken and Baby Corn in Spicy Orange Sauce If you thought their Panda Express version was good, it's true - this one is EVEN BETTER! The batter was crispier and not too thick, the chicken was moist, and the sauce, while slightly sweet, had a slight kick to it that I really liked. Delicious! -- SHRIMP IN GARLIC SAUCE - Shrimp, Snow Peas, Zucchini, Red Bell Peppers, and Water Chestnuts in Garlic Sauce This wasn't bad, but it was definitely my least favorite dish. Although the shrimp were cooked well, I didn't care much for the garlic sauce, which had a bit of kick (good) and a sort of tang to it (not so good). -- BRAISED STRING BEANS with Fresh Garlic in Shao Xing Wine Sauce More solid than spectacular, but not too shabby. While I wish this had a bit of spice or stronger seasoning to it (like XO sauce), I love that the string beans were blistered yet not overcooked, as they still had some bite to them. -- ASSORTED CHOW FUN - Rice Noodles, Shiitake Mushrooms, Baby Bok Choy, and Fresh Ginger in Mushroom Sauce with Beef, Chicken, Pork, Shrimp, and Vegetables Admittedly, I wasn't expecting much out of this one, but it was actually really good! The noodles had a nice chew to them and there was a fair amount of meat/seafood in this. A larger portion/more noodles also would've been nice, but this was great otherwise. Beyond the dishes that we tried, the two other highlights of our visit were our server and the white chocolate covered fortune cookies that came at the end of our meal. The former was really attentive, checking on us throughout our meal, and just super sweet. Ironically, and quite fortunately, that last part can't be said for the fortune cookies, which tasted so good and weren't overly sugary or rich like I feared they'd be. Since they offer so many of the same dishes, folks aren't wrong to say that you can get the same thing for less at Panda Express. However, that's an oversimplification since you're not getting the same thing. In short, those same dishes just taste so much better here, as it makes a huge difference that they're made-to-order in smaller portions versus in large batches and scooped out of a tray. My experience at panda inn surpassed my expectations. I only recently became a fan of Panda Express, so I was super excited to find out that they had a sit down version! The interior was absolutely beautiful, huge restaurant and each room was meticulously decorated. I really appreciated all the panda themed frosted glass. My partner and I arrived for a late lunch so it wasn't too crowded. We got seated right away and was taken care of by a wonderful woman. Everyone had very positive and polite attitude. As for the food, the portions were HUGE! This is definitely not a spot to come alone to unless you plan on taking out over half your order to go. There were all the options from Panda Express and more on the menu, which made me feel like I had to come back and try all the other options. Today we decided to stop by Panda Inn before heading to Knott's with the family, and honestly it was the perfect way to kick off our day. I had been here before, but last time my daughter was way too young (and wild lol) for us to really enjoy a sit-down dinner. Fast forward to today -- she's 4 now, my son is 2 -- and we actually got to have a peaceful family meal. We arrived early enough to grab a booth, which already made things easier with the kids. We started off with the Honey Walnut Shrimp and they were amazing -- not overly sweet and had just the right amount of crunch. We also ordered the Beef and Broccoli, which is one of those dishes that's usually good anywhere, but here it just felt more elevated and flavorful. We went with the fried rice and chow mein combination that comes loaded with meats, and also added the Kung Pao Shrimp which had a ton of flavor and a really nice savory kick. The biggest win though? The table was quiet for a solid 15 minutes... which if you're a parent, you know means the kids were actually enjoying their food. My daughter kept it simple with white rice and was locked in. Valentine's brunch for us is family style now, and we couldn't complain one bit. My wife and I both love Asian food and she truly enjoyed her meal. This visit honestly made me realize Panda Inn walked so Panda Express could run. They also give you these white chocolate dipped fortune cookies at the end which were fire. I drive by Panda Inn all the time and finally decided to give it a try. My boyfriend and I arrived on a Saturday evening, and although the parking lot was packed, we were seated immediately at a booth with no wait. Unfortunately, the experience went downhill from there. No one came by to take our drink or food order for nearly ten minutes. A family seated after us received prompt service, which made the delay even more noticeable. The couple behind us complained and asked not to be served by the same waitress, but we decided to take our chances. That was a mistake. We ordered shrimp fried rice, honey walnut shrimp, orange chicken. Rice and orange chicken arrived lukewarm. The shrimp had not been cleaned properly and still had fecal matter attached, which was disgusting. My boyfriend refused to eat any of it out of fear of food poisoning, and I didn't eat mine either. We decided to trash the entire meal. The server never checked on us, despite passing our table multiple times. We eventually had to stop her just to ask for the bill. I never asked for the waitress name but on the receipt, it says employee team 8. Overall, this was a one-and-done experience for us. The food was nasty and the service was even worse. 10+ years ago when I worked in Bellflower, I was aware that Panda Inn was the OG Panda Express. I always thought of picking it up to bring home for dinner, but never did. Then I stopped working out that way and forgot all about it. Husband recently watched a YouTuber reviewing local Chinese restaurants and was excited about this place, so we decided to come for lunch ASAP. So glad we did! We got there right when they opened, no wait, super fast service. Everybody here is so happy and friendly! Hubs ordered their Maple Old Fashioned and really liked it. I stuck with plain iced tea and it was tasty. For lunch we got an order of Veggie Eggrolls, Mongolian Beef, Orange Chicken, and Shrimp Fried Rice. Everything was excellent! Great quality meat, fresh veggies, large portions, and very flavorful. After tip this was a $100 lunch, which is a bit much, but we were able to eat the leftovers for lunch for 2 more days, so it was worth it to me. Serving a focused menu of classic Chinese Mandarin dishes, Panda Inn in La Palma served food as good as my family was hoping for, with service that exceeded my expectations. The Panda brand got created in 1973 in Pasadena as a local Chinese restaurant serving Mandarin dishes, catered to American tastes. It then became the first Chinese fast food chain, opening the first Panda Express as a mall food court restaurant in 1983 in Glendale, serving up prepared food kept warm on steam tables. Growing up in the Midwest, I was shocked at how popular Panda Express is in California across various groups. And I'd come to appreciate how easy it was to stop in for take-home dinner after work, if Chinese food was the choice. The food was almost always pretty mediocre, but felt if I could get lucky to get food right after it was prepared, it would be a lot better. So decided to go to the nearest OG to see what it would taste like prepared to order. We came about 15 minutes after it opened on a Saturday and it was already quite busy. The parking lot has a lot of spots, so would assume it would get full due to the popularity of the restaurant. Inside seating is varied, and the three of us got a circular booth. This location opened in 1989, making it over 35 years old, but it still looked very well maintained and elegant inside. I had signed up for their loyalty club beforehand, which gave us a free order of mini pork dumplings. I wanted to order enough food to sample what they are famous for, wanting to take home leftovers. Homemade mini pork dumplings ($10 for ten pieces) - boiled dumplings, served on top of a dashi soy sauce. It was good, great texture on the meatballs. Three Flavors Sizzling Rice Soup ($14, enough for 4 small bowls). Came with plenty of seafood (bay scallops and large shrimp). The chicken broth was very light, OK but not great. Orange Chicken ($20) - tasted like Panda Express, except they included baby corn, which went great with the dish. Good for folks who don't mind a lot of crispy batter...because it was served immediately after prep, it tasted really good dining-in (confirmed the taste went down significantly after bringing it home). Honey Walnut Shrimp ($26.50) - jumbo shrimp, lightly battered and doused in a sweet mayo based sauce, topped with honeyed walnuts. A classic American Chinese dish, well executed here with quality ingredients. Upside Down Crispy Noodles with choice of shrimp ($20) - a clear winner, this dish is something I've not found at other menus in Southern California. They use egg noodle 'bricks' that are deep fried in-house with the noodles being very thin...it's almost like instant ramen noodles. It then mixed together with the other ingredients table-side. They give plenty of vegetables and protein, with the entire portion being quite large...we only made a dent in it. Our server, Jesus, was excellent: accurate, timely, and friendly while doing tableside work like dividing up the soup into bowls and preparing the upside down noodles tableside. I learned from him that many things (but not all) on the menu are made from scratch on-site. I confirmed that the breaded chicken chunks from the Orange Chicken is premade (tasted just like what you would get at a Panda Express), but that the same sauce is used on the Phoenix Chicken dish (which uses house breaded white meat chicken). Will absolutely get that next time if somebody in the party wants Orange Chicken. Oh yeah...the fortune cookies at the end of the meal were unique: individually wrapped, white chocolate dipped. There is something to longevity in the restaurant business...restaurants that survive (and thrive) this long give people what they are looking for: great tasting food in a comfortable environment with great service. This is my go-to place whenever we want to host a big event or want a private room, and are wanting good Chinese cuisine. As everybody may already know, Panda Inn is the upscale, sit-down predecessor to Panda Express. Interesting enough, I don't order their Orange Chicken because I know it'll always hit at a Panda Express. I always start with their Minced Chicken Lettuce Wrap and Sizzling Soup. The chicken wraps comes with a side of hoisin and hot honey mustard, which is a nice touch to the wraps. The Sizzling Soup has crunchy rice, shrimp, scallop, chicken and vegetables. For main, I like getting a beef, chicken, shrimp, and veggie dish. I've had their Mongolian Beef, Beef & Broccoli, Kung Pao Chicken, Cashew Chicken, Honey Walnut Shrimp, Sweet & Pungent Shrimp (love the sauce!), Fish in Black Bean Sauce, Mapo Tofu, Braised String Beans, and Panda Rice which has scallops, shrimp, egg tossed in garlic oyster sauce. I love how all dishes are served on a rotating round table so we can just turn the table to get the dish we want. Staff is always attentive and makes sure that hot tea is always refilled. The fried rice was fresh and had a good amount of shrimp in it. Everything came out hot and tasted fresh. The portions were good, the service was on point, and the overall vibe was nice and relaxed. I generally avoid fortune cookies, merely cracking them open for the fortune inside, but when dipped in chocolate (milk/dark/white), it's game over. Service was great. The attendants were quick with seating and providing assistance, when requested. The restaurant has an interesting layout, reminding me of an old timey schoolhouse or, dare I say, inn? Instead of a large open dining area, the dining rooms are semi-private. One in the front left corner, another in the rear left corner, etc. A small bar area is located in the center of Panda Inn. Parking is via a private lot. I'm a fan of Panda Express, and now I can definitively say, I'm a fan of Panda Inn, as well. The food was solid, ditto for the service. There were only about 3-4 tables occupied at the time we ordered and most of them were already eating, so I'm not sure why it took so long. The servers were not attentive and it took a while for us to flag someone down whenever we needed anything. Even for the check. I've had this place bookmarked for a while and always wanted to go and I had a good experience going my first time. Panda in is where you can get very size-able portions and good quality overall. My personal favorite was the garlic noodles and the Mongolian beef. My mom and grandma ended up getting the family sized orange chicken and regular order of the panda beef respectively. I used to go to their Pasadena location when I was a kid and I remember the days when they had their Sunday brunch buffet. Like Panda Express, they have Chinese American Classics like Broccoli Beef and Orange Chicken. They're comparable to what you'd get at their fast-food cousin, but the dishes are freshly prepped to order here, which does make a difference. The thing about Panda Inn is that it's an upgraded experience in service, ambiance, and in their preparation. While they have the classics, they have dishes exclusive to the branding like Panda Rice, Honey Walnut Shrimp, and Short Ribs, which take the concept to the next level. People complain about "authenticity" when they talk about Panda Restaurant Group and their brands; however, that's not a problem for me.
