    Ham and cheese empanada
    Karina U.

Solid mom and pop spot, at least for empanadas. People say they are the best in town and I would say they are pretty up there compared to others I've had elsewhere. For me, it comes down to two things for empanadas- how is the crust and is the filling dry. The crust on these empanadas is a solid five. Flakey and a just a bit oily but in the best way. Beef empanada is pretty dry meat-wise but the ham/cheese and chicken ones are the real stars. Highly recommend the sauces but especially the salsa one which has a bit of a kick. Tres leches cake was good but both my friend and I agreed we detected what tasted like a hint of alcohol in there somewhere, although the ingredients say otherwise so not sure where that flavor was coming from. Would definitely return for the flaky chicken or ham empanadas. Probably wouldn't get the tres leches again since I've had better locally elsewhere.

Hidden away spot that deserves more of a shout out! It is small and seems better for take out. There were a couple of people sitting inside. If you do want to dine in, it's more for a quick bite. I tried a baleda for the first time ever and it was soooo good. It's refried beans, eggs, cream sauce, and I did beef wrapped in some kind of soft/chewy bread. The bread reminded me of thinner naan bread. Loved the textures and flavors. A baleda and coffee was like $7! Can't beat it. Will come back! I'm reading that the empanadas are great...need to try those.

I work nearby so I looked up some breakfast options in the area. I stopped by a little before 8 and grabbed a breakfast burrito type thing. The "tortilla" was more like naan, and it was filled with beans, cheese, and eggs. You can get it with meat for another $1.50. It was good but a little too dough-y and chewy. I would have liked more filling and less dough. I also ordered a chicken empanada for lunch but ended up eating it for breakfast. It was great! Crispy and flavorful. I liked that it was really full of chicken instead of mostly dough like other empanadas I've tried. I don't think I'll order the breakfast item anymore but I'll definitely be back for empanadas!

They offered a wide selection of empanadas and with great quantity. The taste of the empanadas were great although the price for them were a little high for my liking. What I did enjoy was that they offered to heat it so I can eat it on the go as well as they filled them up nicely. I particularly liked the chicken one the most, the beef felt the most filling, while the pulled pork one tasted like a classaic pulled pork sandwich stuff in an empanada. They weren't dry tasting and had good depth of flavor. The sauces were extra cost however was a nice compliment. I would come back again if convinient and in the mood.

Opened just two years ago in a little strip mall consisting of 2 stores off S Main St in Lodi, I came to Empanadas NJ Cafe as a first-timer for lunch. Upon entering this cozy shop with 3 tables for dining, I was greeted by the staff at his family-owned/family-run establishment specializing in Argentinian empanadas. These, put simply, are savory baked hand-held pastries. A large selection menu featured everything from Beef, Chicken, Ham & Cheese to Apple Pie, Hawaiian, and Guava & Cheese. One can't go wrong with any of the options. After speaking with Lucas, the owners' son, he recommended their popular Beef, Chicken, and Cuban Empanadas. They arrived hot. Each empanada was identified with the initials on the left side border. The shells were not greasy. They were packed full with the flavorful fillings with the accompanied Chimichurri sauce and were delicious. The price was comparable to the area. The staff was friendly and helpful; the service was fast. They've gotten so popular that a second location has been announced in Boonton. It was worth every minute, which I can recommend.

One can stuff them with any number of things. On this Nochebuena (Christmas Eve), while in the neighborhood of Totowa, my partner and I decided to pay a visit to this establishment for takeout as first-timers. Opened 6 years ago, Mama Ana's Empanadas is a family-owned restaurant specializing in empanadas located off of Union Blvd. Greeted by the staff upon arrival, the interior vibe was not only festive but cozy and casual with seating for 20 patrons. From the menu, one can choose up to 18 different kinds of empanadas, from classic beef or chicken to cheesesteak and Cuban; either have them baked or fried. They also offer Latin" bowls, salads, and sandwiches. We decided on the cheesesteak empanada and broccoli & cheese empanada, as well as the Chicharrones de Cerdo bowl, accompanied by rice and beans with a side of maduros (sweet plantain). The cheesesteak was tasty. The broccoli came with mozzarella, which was salty. The cheddar would have been better. The empanada dough was hot, flaky, and huge. Chicharrones de cerdo bowl was served piping hot and hit the spot. The pork wasn't hard but had great flavor and chew. The price was reasonable due to its size and portion. The service was slow, but we know the food was made fresh. The staff were friendly and helpful, especially Ada and Yame. We can recommend this place.
