    Ham and cheese empanada
    Karina U.

Solid mom and pop spot, at least for empanadas. People say they are the best in town and I would say they are pretty up there compared to others I've had elsewhere. For me, it comes down to two things for empanadas- how is the crust and is the filling dry. The crust on these empanadas is a solid five. Flakey and a just a bit oily but in the best way. Beef empanada is pretty dry meat-wise but the ham/cheese and chicken ones are the real stars. Highly recommend the sauces but especially the salsa one which has a bit of a kick. Tres leches cake was good but both my friend and I agreed we detected what tasted like a hint of alcohol in there somewhere, although the ingredients say otherwise so not sure where that flavor was coming from. Would definitely return for the flaky chicken or ham empanadas. Probably wouldn't get the tres leches again since I've had better locally elsewhere.

Hidden away spot that deserves more of a shout out! It is small and seems better for take out. There were a couple of people sitting inside. If you do want to dine in, it's more for a quick bite. I tried a baleda for the first time ever and it was soooo good. It's refried beans, eggs, cream sauce, and I did beef wrapped in some kind of soft/chewy bread. The bread reminded me of thinner naan bread. Loved the textures and flavors. A baleda and coffee was like $7! Can't beat it. Will come back! I'm reading that the empanadas are great...need to try those.

I work nearby so I looked up some breakfast options in the area. I stopped by a little before 8 and grabbed a breakfast burrito type thing. The "tortilla" was more like naan, and it was filled with beans, cheese, and eggs. You can get it with meat for another $1.50. It was good but a little too dough-y and chewy. I would have liked more filling and less dough. I also ordered a chicken empanada for lunch but ended up eating it for breakfast. It was great! Crispy and flavorful. I liked that it was really full of chicken instead of mostly dough like other empanadas I've tried. I don't think I'll order the breakfast item anymore but I'll definitely be back for empanadas!

They were of the potato variety. Since they were made to order, they came out piping hot. My thoughts on each are below. The temperature really made a difference as I tried a few bites after they cooled down and it was not the same. All of the donuts were appropriate in size and somehow appeared very light. I wonder if that was attributed to the potato variety. I just could not believe how much the hot temperature made a difference in all four. Original Cinnamon Sugar - This was very good with plenty of sugar present. Raspberry Jam - There was a ton of raspberry jam here and it was great. Nutella - There was an excessive amount of Nutella here and it worked out well with the hot donut texture. It was unreal. Cannoli - This was great too. I really liked the melted chocolate chips in the cannoli cream. Will I go back? Oh, easily.

Verrilli is a charming, hole in the wall bakery with a cozy interior. Although seating is limited inside, they will have a lot of outdoor seating when summer rolls around. There is a small parking lot out front, but may need to street park when it gets busy. The owner is incredibly warm and welcoming. Getting to the highlight: the potato donuts!! They also have other small desserts like cannoli, cookies, biscotti, and pizza, burgers, fries - all freshly homemade. Anyway, ordered the cinnamon sugar and butter glaze donut, (fresh and best enjoyed hot) and it was so light, fluffy, and not overly sweet!Looking to try their other donuts on the menu! Note: Owner mentioned this is BYOB! And can mix and match donut toppings!

The staff was friendly and patient when we decided on what to order. Five items were tried, and each will be described below. Black & White Cookie ($4.50) - This was a traditional sweet that was done right. There was a nice balance of the chocolate and vanilla flavoring while the cookie was not too soft or hard. Chocolate & Vanilla Pretzel ($5.50) - This was very interesting. It was not overly sweet and was large. It was just a different type of pretzel. It was a tad dry, but not bad. Pumpkin Donut ($3) - This had a nice texture, but the actual donut did not have enough sugar I thought. The pumpkin frosting was just right though. Cinabun ($5) - This was very solid. It looked like it was going to be filling, but it was lighter than imagined. The cream cheese frosting was too much for me, but it had a nice texture. Swiss Chalet Wrap ($13.99) - This came with fried eggplant, arugula, tomato bruschetta, and a balsamic dressing. This was my favorite item tried, no doubt. The wrap was filled and nicely made with a good balance of the ingredients. The eggplant was fried ideally too. It was a well put together wrap. The coleslaw that was provided was plain, but there was much provided anyway. Will I go back? I would.

They ended up not enjoying it, so that's why there's some missing and none of us wanted to eat it anymore! Spoke to Suzi when picking up the cake and explained to her that the cake would not be eaten on the day of, but instead two days later. The cake was for September 1st and that happened to be Labor Day so I had to pick it up earlier! She said, "That's fine," and it can be stored in the fridge for up to a week and in the freezer for up to three months. So, not sure why there's a sense of judgement, cakes should be able to be stored for longer periods of time! And we wanted to order from a bakery specifically, since it was a special occasion. Not sure what your reference to a "squished" cake has to do with it food will accumulate residue in containers overtime! 9/12/25 From seeing professional pictures online of the beautiful cakes on Google Reviews of Suzi Cakes and good reviews on Yelp, I genuinely thought that the red velvet cake I ordered over the phone with Suzi would be amazing. Boy, was I wrong. I had to throw out the cake after 6 days because no one wanted to eat it anymore. We gave some part of the cake away to a relative, so we didn't consume much...not sure if they enjoyed it either. There were 'red' flags that I noticed when placing an order with Suzi. I chose to ignore them because I needed a nicely catered cake for my sister's birthday. Suzi sounded very direct over the phone and sometimes dismissive, so I felt that I needed to truly know and prepare for how I wanted my cake each time I called. I could not go in person to explain or show pictures due to the distance from her business in East Hanover. Suzi gave me the listed price of $90, and I personally thought it was overpriced for a 7-inch, single-tiered cake. I originally did not want to place with Suzi, but I could not find a place around me that would do a red velvet cake legitimately, besides Coco Luxe Cakes in Peapack and Gladstone. Coco Luxe discontinued their red velvet cakes, unfortunately, which is the cake I truly needed, hence why I ordered here. Next, trying to find the suite number and building for this place was a nightmare, another red flag. It's very tight behind some train tracks and very easy to miss. Thank goodness for advanced technology and Google Maps/Street View for helping me navigate. I called Suzi on the phone so she could service me at the front desk to get the cake. I picked up the cake and truly believed that I would make my sister's birthday special, and I planned everything perfectly. I stored the cake in the fridge for 2 days before eating and followed all of Suzi's storage directions. We tried the cake and it was awful. It had a fermented-like taste, and we could not eat it. I saw a similar review on Yelp of someone having Suzi make their cake for their wedding, and their wedding guests could not eat it; it was that bad. I was hoping that would not happen to me, but it did, surely. The icing was hard, dry, and chunky; the cake itself lacked flavor. I got a red velvet cake from ShopRite in July for $16.99, and it tasted way better; just the cake was a little dry. I called Suzi to give her some feedback so she knows. She informed me to come back so she could examine the taste, but at that point, we threw the cake out. $90 truly wasted. Can't really ask for a refund, I guess, because I never came back to her about it, because her location is almost an hour from my house...not sustainable for me. Despite the good reviews, I will never go to Suzi Cakes again. I will stick with another recommendation I got from a relative for Coco Luxe in Peapack if I want a professionally made cake from a bakery. My sister's birthday was ruined, and no one in my family liked the cake. The price for the cake was outrageous, and compared to other local bakeries in the area, the price does not justify the taste. The presentation of the cake is good, but the taste is abysmal. Save yourself, your palate, and your wallet by looking elsewhere!

Suzi Cakes could not have been nicer or more accommodating with just 2 weeks notice. The communication was so simple, professional, and pleasant. We did Vanilla with Oreo Mousse filling and it was DELICIOUS. The cake was so soft, fluffy, and flavorful. And the filling was awesome! I know I've found my new bakery for future events!!! Thank you Suzi Cakes!
