American French flair restaurant with a robust selection of food options, extremely difficult to decide on what to dine. The daily specials consist of items such as truffle and caviar in many forms. This location served as a Christmas group party but this is definitely a perfect setting for a date night or other special celebration. Everything from their selection of wine as well as their bread basket options of the intricate pastries and butter, to the dessert selection items of peanut butter ball and passion fruit tart were fabulous. Hostesses, servers and waiters were all beyond sweet and allowed for early set up and gave us a perfect space in their restaurant to have a bit more privacy for more intimate conversations. I've eaten in the Bar area as a solo diner. Food was some of the best in the area. Before Vino Carta Solana Beach opened I would say Pamplemousse Grille was the best in the area, but to be fair the area caters to old drunks and out of town racehorse people. Wines are not particularly creative, but they have something for everyone, even your Champagne drinker, by the glass. Bar area gets packed quickly so get there early or call ahead. Sweetbreads were sold as foie gras which isn't correct, but they were delicious both ways (in tacos and on crostini). Staff helpful and polite. Recommend. read more

Our waiter offered us "off menu" specials - one of which turned out to be illegal foie gras When i expressed my dismay he sidestepped the issue ( let's face it he does not have any control over the menu) but the bigger issue is: foie gras is ILLEGAL in California. It is cruel & inhumane. I am incensed that this upmarket restaurant thinks they are above the law. By offering this repugnant and cruel "delicacy " off menu they are covertly supplying their customers with it and think they can do whatever they want with impunity. Dark. Earthy. Soft small mushroom pieces were hidden in the darkness. Spread on a ribeye steak the additional flavors made for one of the best steaks I've had. I became addicted to ribeye steaks with wild mushroom sauce on a trip to Portland a decade ago. Portland was a bit far to go for steak so began my search for steak with mushroom sauce locally. That search led me to Pamplemousse Grille. French baguette had a crunchy crust and delicious flavor. Among the best I've ever had. I found out Bread & Cie provides it. Grapefruit sorbet was icy and had strong grapefruit flavor. Was just like eating grapefruit. French fries were the crunchiest I've ever had. Really good potato flavor. Onion strings were crunchy and had strong onion flavor. I love how when the onions are cut thin this way you don't have to worry about globs of unfried batter. 14oz prime ribeye with wild mushroom sauce cooked to medium. Beef was extremely tender and had a delicious beef flavor. 17oz dry aged prime rib eye bone in with wild mushroom sauce cooked to medium. Beef was extremely tender and had amazing beef flavor. This is the best steak I've ever had. I love my steak with the bone in and the aging process gave this steak flavors the regular prime rib eye didn't. Mushroom sauce had a delicious savory mushroom flavor and had bits of mushroom in it. Seemed there were different kinds of high quality mushrooms. Pan roasted halibut was tender and flaky with a bit of juice. I could tell it was a high quality fish and it didn't have any fishy flavor. Just that delicious mild halibut flavor. Best I've had in town. Vanilla creme brulee had a hard sugary crust and vanilla creme. My fav dessert. Apple creme brulee had a hard sugary crust and a mixture of creme and apples. Kind of like a creme brulee with apple pie filling on the bottom. Nice mixture of flavors. Pig shaped sugar cookie had a buttery flavor accented by a mild sugar flavor from the sugar crystals on top. Very tasty. Reminds me Mother's use to have really good orange flavored sugar cookies back when I was a kid. This is the place I go for a romantic birthday dinner. It's dark and classy inside. I hazard to write a review of a restaurant that I have been to sporadically. But the four or five times I have patronized the establishment in the last twelve or so years have been consistent. So I feel at this point it is safe to offer my impressions. I should preface my remarks by saying that I want to like the Pamplemousse Grille. I really enjoy French food (especially Provençal) and I have always been struck by the inventiveness and general authenticity of its menus. There are other reasons to like it. The dining area is a pleasant space. Generally, it is quiet and sedate, and loans itself well to refined dining. The staff, too, has been unfailingly excellent over the years. On my last sojourn there, for example, I ordered an appetizer and entree that lent themselves to a white and red wine selection respectively. But as it was at the end of a long day and I was driving, I did not want to drink two glasses of wine. Our waitress thoughtfully provided me with a half glass of each, which proved to be the perfect accompaniment. The menu, too, as I said above, is authentic and shows a real flair. I ordered a duck dish with the breast prepared one way and a leg cooked confit. My wife had a rack of lamb and grilled sirloin combination. The food came quickly and was beautifully presented. BUT: the food is so incredible mediocre. There is no depth or subtlety to the flavors at all. It borders on the bland and utterly forgettable. Good French food should be neither. This has been the case for each and every time I have eaten at Pamplemousse. Whoever the executive chef is should consider a really good crash course in learning how to use herbs, spices and alcohol in cooking. It's all so horribly disappointing. What's even more disappointing is the exceptional bill that you receive for such an unexceptional meal. Last week, with tip it came to almost $400 for two. For that sort of price tag, I am afraid the restaurant is an utter failure. Perhaps other patrons feel differently about their experiences. But Pamplemousse Grille is an excellent example of why San Diego continues to be a second-rate food city. read more

Chef/Owner Jeffrey Strauss has impressive volumes of accomplishments, people and corporations that he has cooked for. The food presentation alone will blow you away. The delicate, artistry portrays such a unique love and knowledge of food, makes you feel so special when each dish is served. Once you start to taste each ingredient, layers of flavor, some subtle, some strong, overlap, intertwine and play together in such a beautiful dance. After my first visit, nothing else ever compared, not even close. So when we came here for our 14th Anniversary in October 2016, it was just perfect. This is my favorite restaurant in all of San Diego. If I could afford to eat here for every single meal, I would 100% do it. I'm not sure why people are complaining about the prices - it's $$$$ on yelp and it's not like there's not prices located next to the dish on the menu. CRISPY DUCK - Amazing portion - I couldn't finish this dish and ended up having to take it home. No complaints from me, this is honestly the best duck dish I've ever had in my life. Super moist yet with an amazingly crispy skin. PEAR TARTE-TATIN - Match made in heaven. I didn't expect this to be as delicious as it was but every component of this dish just seemed to work with each other to create an amazing flavor. It was warm and the match up of the berries and the gelato just complimented each other so well. We had a 7p reservation last Friday night during Restaurant Week. There were quite a bit of people waiting for a table that day night. It was the last night of that Restaurant Week so no one was surprised. The bar was packed and the front waiting area was busy as well. The hostess said it would a slight wait as people are taking longer than expected to eat and pay. It's sad to hear that because 1) why am I on time for my reservation and 2) you're probably going to rush my meal too then huh. After 20 min of waiting, I asked the hostess for an update and she said they're cleaning our table. We were seated probably around 7:30p. We ordered: - Kim Chee Seafood Martini with Lobster, Shrimp, Bay Scallops & Jumbo Lump Crab We both decided to try this 'martini' as the other two options (soup or salad) didn't appeal to either of us. Both seafood martinis came out quickly. It was dark inside the restaurant so forgive the pics. I enjoyed the lump crab and the lobster. It did taste quite fresh. But the 'kim chee' of this dish didn't do it for me. I didn't like the taste or texture of their kim chee with the fresh seafood . Their kim chee wasn't the Korean version I'm used to (which is probably a good thing b/c the Korean version would probably have been too strong/fermented for the seafood). - Duo of Filet of Beef & Braised Short Rib, Horseradish Mashed Potatoes & Sautéed French Beans The waiter asked how I wanted the filet prepared which made me happy because I figured maybe each filet will be made to order. I asked for medium rare and it came out more medium. The meat was a bit tough and it just didn't taste like the type of filet you would imagine a restaurant like Pamplemousse serving. We both commented how the 'exterior' of the short rib was quite dark and 'dried out looking'. Perhaps they cooked it too long. Perhaps it sat out too long. I don't know. But what I do know is that both the filet and short rib that night didn't taste right and it was disappointing. The green beans were quite good: a bit of garlic, nicely seasoned, had a good crunch to it. - Crispy Half Duck with Sweet White Corn, Sautéed French Beans & Cherry Balsamic Reduction A nice sized portion but the duck, in my opinion, was over cooked. A good quality duck can be served more rare and this duck was just cooked too long. The meat tasted dry to me. - Trio of Profiteroles Salted Caramel Mousse, Chocolate Mousse & Vanilla Bavarian Mousse The presentation was so plain, so sad. What a way to end a meal. The cream puffs tasted cold and stale. I opened the 'lids' of the profiteroles in the 2nd pic so you can see the mousse. The salted caramel tasted *too* salty to me. The other two flavors, unfortunately, were unmemorable. - Warm Chocolate Caramel Cake Salted Caramel Crème Anglaise, Vanilla Gelato, Variety of Berries This was more of a molten lava cake and we both enjoyed this dessert. I'm not sure if I was just happy to see something served decently at that point or if I was just still hungry. The cake was indeed warm and the warm chocolate caramel that oozed from the middle was delicious. The vanilla gelato tasted cold and light paired with the oozing cake. So how was the overall experience. It was disappointing for me because *I* was the one that suggested this restaurant and the food, overall, just didn't meet my expectations. I know, I know - it was Restaurant Week. But can *that* be used as an excuse every time a meal disappoints during that special discounted week at restaurants. Perhaps. $45 might seem like a good deal but when you end the night with questions such as ' why did I pick this restaurant in the first place?' or ' I can't believe the filet and short ribs were that bad' - it's not a good feeling or a nice way to end a meal. I think it took us a little over an hour to eat. Service was quick and some what attentive. But it felt as if the food was served quickly so the next set of customers could sit. Understandable... because guess what... It's Restaurant Week. As much as I was let down by dinner, I'd like to be encouraged that Restaurant Week didn't showcase what Pamplemousse is capable of. I've read such great reviews about them and one of my friends swears Pamplemousse is the best restaurant this side of town. read more

This is fast becoming my favorite place, reminds me of my places in LA. The service is so friendly, the crowd is nice, and of course the food is the main draw. I don't usually like French restaurants (too many fussy sauces), but this one has a great menu that seems more "continental" rather than French. You need a res on the weekend and the place was pretty packed on a Saturday night. But we had a nice quiet table (you can talk comfortably in this place), and a great server. The special was a big ol' honking grilled lobster ($50--not bad) and it was yummy. Have had a hard time finding lobster in San Diego. Served with garlic mashed and beautiful sauteed veggies with a ginger cream sauce. Special and very tasty. Diane had grilled John Dory served over veggies ($42) and she said it was delicious. We controlled ourselves and didn't have dessert. Wines: a Russian River pinot noir, and a Napa Valley Merlot. $16 and $12. This place is right across from Del Mar racetrack and is probably mobbed during the season. One cute touch: If you get a to-go container, they give you a claim check and you pick up your package from the front desk when you leave, so you don't have the take out container sitting at the table. I've had their other entrees and while I like some of the fish dishes the duck confit has a special place in my heart. I started with the foie two ways. Followed by the duck as entree. I'm not a dessert person but the Pear dish here is delightful. While I was disappointed there weren't wine pairings we had no issue picking a bottle for the table which complimented everyone's food. I can't say enough about the quality of the food here, This has traditionally been my regular meeting place for business in the past, and fine dining choice at night. Today, we stopped by on a whim in the afternoon, though I felt strangely, dressed casually in shorts, after a day antique shopping by the beach. I really wanted one of their Kobe beef burgers. They welcomed us into the dining room, and expertly served us some lobster ravioli, and my kobe beef hamburger in stellar fashion as always. To say I recommend Pamplemousse is the understatement of the century. I had the scallops with peas and cauliflower purée (one of the specials) and the scallops were perfectly tender. My girlfriend and I stopped by at 8:30 last Saturday night and asked to be seated at the bar, where we had dined before. We had a lovely dinner, and are already planning our next visit. We started with their black truffle gnocchi. They shave the truffle tableside, so that was fun. The gnocchi were absolutely delicious, the amount of truffle was generous, and the sauce was lovely. We enjoyed every bite! We both ordered the Kobe truffle burger with truffle Parmesan fries, and it definitely lived up to the good reviews I read online. I actually found this restaurant because I was googling for the best burgers in the SD area, and the Kobe truffle burger came up on a few sites. The bun was great, the meat was buttery, and the truffle cheese and mayo were amazing. The fries were crispy and absolutely perfect. For dessert, we ordered the chocolate peanut butter bombe and the donuts. Wow. We finished every bite! Granted, I felt like I needed a wheelbarrow to get back to my car after eating so much, but this amazing dinner was definitely worth all the excess calories and bloat. We ate here for my husband's birthday a few weeks ago. Outdoor dining was kind of "outdoor" (meaning, it was a tent in a parking lot with walls and a ceiling, sort of defeating the purpose of being outdoors if there's no real airflow). Our server was amazing, and the food was quite good, but not good-for-the-price good. I had a duo of game, which for $70 fell short of my expectations, especially as the hen was grilled and served on top of asparagus, neither of which had any kind of accompaniment. Came here for their $50 dinner offer during SDRW on a Friday night. I got the lobster ravioli, duck confit, and pear Tarte-tatin- all SO DELICIOUS! My friend and I were seated immediately. When you walk in, there will be a bar on the left, and the restaurant itself is on the right. The food here definitely deserves five stars. It came out quite quickly, and I really had a great time trying everything. The lobster ravioli was delicious- they really do not skimp on the lobster at all!!! The duck tasted soooo good!! Outside was perfectly crispy, and the meat itself was not dry at all. The pear dessert was something I was a little on the edge about as I'd normally choose a different dessert, but because I saw the Yelp reviews, I went with it and it didn't disappoint! It kind of reminded me of an apple galette... The best way to describe it would be a moist pie type dessert. It isn't super sweet and the crust/breading was AMAZING. I seriously would come back just for the dessert hahaha The reason for the four stars is because our waitress wasn't very attentive. Although the restaurant was busy, I still do expect decent service... My waitress seemed to be in a huge rush, and looked almost annoyed when taking my order. This review is regarding their private room food and service. Pamplemousse Grille has a separate private room on the left side of their restaurant. It has it's own entrance and is quite spacious (looked like it could sit 40-50 people easily). It's quiet since it's away from the main dining hall which is great if you are there to listen to a dinner presentation. The menu I tried included: - Truffle fries (perfectly fried and so delicious!) - Bread basket (mini jalapeno corn muffins were scrumptious and the french baguette paired well with their creamy butter) - Seafood kimchee with lobster, shrimp and crab in a martini glass (sorry people, no alcohol in the food and not authentic Korean kimchee; it's just pickled with some cabbage but super tasty and fresh) - Filet of beef with vegetables and mashed potatoes (the beef was cooked and seasoned to perfection; the mashed potatoes were average) - Pear tart with vanilla gelato with berries (melted in my mouth) I thought the service was excellent. The waiters were good about bring out our food without causing too much disruption and the food came out smoothly course after course. I appreciate how parking is FREE! We both had the Seabass and the it was best Seabass I've had in quite a while! We Shared the Burratta salad again excellent and we had desserts which were scrumptious as well! The service is always top-notch & the ambience was great even though it was in a heated tent ! and now they're having happy hour so I'm gonna start going to during the week ! Always wanted to try this place and dined here during Restaurant Week. The place was smaller than I had expected. Our table was less than an arm's distance away from couples on either side of us. Very cramped and crowded to say the least. I ordered the truffled white asparagus soup, Kobe beef burger topped with truffle cheese and a side of truffled Parmesan fries, and lastly, chocolate truffle cake with raspberry sauce and vanilla gelato. Needless to say, I was "truffled" out by the end of the evening. The soup was thick, creamy and excellent! The burger and fries were amazingly wonderful! The chocolate cake and gelato were delicious! I think this is a very nice place, particularly after hours when the other businesses in the area shutdown and the parking opens up even more. I was here for a party a few weeks back and it was a lot of fun. Food is great and the service is prompt. For the entree I had a combo dish that consisted of short ribs and a filet of beef. Honestly, the ribs I could have done without but the beef was one of those rare instances of a restaurant cooking its cow to perfection. My frustration knows no bounds with restaurants that can't properly cook beef, but fortunately the Pamplemousse Grille knows what they're doing. The steak was tender and bursting with flavor. My only complaint is that I couldn't order more. :) Overall I had a great time here and would love to come back. I think it's great for parties and date nights. What a treat!!! For whatever the reason, we have never been to Pamplemousse Grille although we have lived nearby for many years. It was delicious and we were not disappointed. Husband had the ribeye and remarked how tender it was and cooked "perfectly". I had the ahi which I thoroughly enjoyed.
