After years of being a loyal customer, ordering cakes, customized goods, and just popping in for some of their delicious treats, I have officially resigned from ever going back to Palermo's. Your treats and baked goods can be tasty, but it means absolutely nothing if you don't have the ability to recognize the importance of treating the people who support you with care, kindness, and respect. At 8am yesterday, I was first in the store to pick up two cakes for a birthday celebration. The same attendee who has attended to me before didn't even acknowledge that I was waiting there patiently to be attended to, a few minutes passed and another patron walked in and she immediately assisted them. I had politely asked her, that several times in the past she had been very standoffish towards me, and if I had done something to be treated in such a way...with a very unpleasant attitude said that she would get the manager. Needless to say, I won't continue with the full story, however, the experience has left such a poor taste in my mouth that I sadly will no longer be enjoying Palermo's due to the lack of their staff's professionalism. I have enjoyed products from Palermo Bakery over the years. It's about time that I wrote about this establishment in Norridge, just a wee bit west of Harlem Irving Plaza. It seems that whatever we have tried has been good, and that includes cannoli, paczki, cream puffs and other assorted pastries. In case you are not familiar with Palermo Bakery, perhaps you have come across some of their goodies at your local Mariano's grocery. Yesterday we purchased a variety of zeppole (lemon custard, rocky road, pistachio white chocolate, banana Nutella). We have not tasted all of the flavors yet, but boy we are looking forward to doing so! These Italian treats are like large delicate cream puffs, with pillowy pastry framing the generous creamy fillings. It was fun to share the different zeppole with my love. We also enjoyed the focaccia bread, tasty but not too greasy. Palermo bakes some beautifully decorated cookies, and I look forward to trying their arancini (and probably a few other items) next time I go there. read more

Palermo Bakery is a large bakery with a retail storefront next to Rolling Stones in Norridge. Upon entry, you are greeted by the smell of fresh breads and by a bunch of lighted glass front coolers with tons of pastries and cookies in them. They have display tables with non-refrigerated goods like breadsticks, coffee cakes and other items in the center of the retail area. I ordered a variety of items to see how they are. -cannoli zeppole- this was a zeppole with cannoli filling. It was ok. The pastry was typical of a zeppole and somewhat soft. The filling wasn't overly flavorful but overall ok. -cannoli with crushed almonds on the ends (they didn't have pistachio available)-shell wasn't crispy enough, and again, the cannoli filling wasn't very flavorful. -whipped cream and strawberry pączki-very nice looking and large in size. This was not on par with pączki from polish bakeries but was enjoyable overall. I didn't like that the whipped cream was a bit oily and left a coating in my mouth after eating. Pricing was good especially considering how inflated everything is these days. The bill for these items came in at just over $15 before the 3% credit card surcharge. I don't recall seeing any notice about the surcharge but can't be sure. It was clean inside. The lady that helped me didn't wash her hands before putting on a glove which isn't correct, but otherwise seemed sanitary. The workers were pleasant but not as welcoming or enthusiastic as other places I've visited. No complaints here. Free parking is available on Irving Park Rd right in front of the bakery but spaces are a bit tight. If you have a big vehicle, it will be tight. You also will need to back up right into oncoming traffic when you leave, so be careful. Overall, this is an average bakery with a great selection of all the Italian staples. I may stop by to try some other items but with tough competition in the area, they may want to up their game. read more

Stopped in after seeing so many Facebook videos on my feed for the place. Lots of options, but it will get pricey. Staff is very nice and helpful in suggesting options. Go with the daily specials - Wednesday was $2.50 cannoli! I got a pre-boxes pound of cookies, another 2 pound I chose, some rainbow pizelle, two cannoli and some tomato bread rounds and it was $65. Parking can be tricky as this is right on Irving and traffic gets busy, plus some spots are reserved for the driving school - I'd suggest not coming during rush hour - but about 8:30 was easy enough! read more

Tried this bakery a few days ago. Their paczki are cut and then filled. I purchased the purple paczki with lavender and blueberry. The flavors did not come through and it was as hard as a rock. From breads, cookies, tons of pastries and cakes, Palermo Bakery has a wide variety that will satisfy anyone's sweet tooth. There are lots of Italian sweets options as well as Arancini, Focacia, Sub Sandwiches and Pizza. There are so many different options for cookies here that it is extremely hard not to walk out of here with some of each. Customer service here is always exemplary. Even though they can get really busy, the wait home is normally pretty short. Need a specialty cake? They can easily accommodate you. For an Italian bakery they sure do polish paczki amazingly. This treat is only made once a year so it is a must stop in the morning for Fat Tuesday. There zepoli and other Italian treats are also great. This is a local gem in an area which is blessed with far to many amazing bakeries. The goodie box for 20.20 is worth it for a small gathering or just spread it around with your family at home. Such a great assortment. I mentioned there were kids, but the box was for my friends 41st birthday so they offered to include cookies. They even made a little plaque that said Happy Birthday and her name. Just moved to the area and was looking for a key lime pie for my son's birthday. Called and yes, they have them. Walked in and the place looks and smells great. Bought a full size "key lime pie". Unfortunately, key lime pie this was not. The whole family agreed it was not as advertised. The crust was shortbread (instead of the traditional Graham cracker). The filling was quite yellow with some green lime zest in it and it was not key lime. It wasn't limey at all, not tart. It was much too sweet and had a very grainy texture. Just not appealing. No one finished this slice. Disappointed in this pie as I was really hoping to love it and make this my new bakery. read more

I was contacted by one of my subscribers telling me that I needed to try this fantastic bakery. I am always open to try new places or suggestions that my subscribers send that they would like me to review. The name of this bakery is Palermo's in Norridge. The location of the bakery is right next to the famous Rolling Stone Records. The moment that you walk in you are transported to an old school, Italian bakery. I was greeted by the fifth generation owner Biagio Greco. While I looked at all of the delicious pastries that were on display, I spoke with Biagio about his beautiful bakery. We talked about how his family has been at this location for over a decade. His family has generations of experience in the Italian bakery space going back to Italy. I could see visually that these pastries were absolutely gorgeous. I have many times run into the problem where pastries look very good, but when you take a bite into them, they taste awful. I was at first worried that I would come to this problem. They just looked too good to be true. I could not wait any longer. I had to try one of my favorite Italian pastries, the Zeppole. The first bite I was in absolute sugar bliss. The filling custard was so decadent and flavorful, but not overly sweet. The pastry was so light and flaky and extremely fresh. It was so perfect in every way. I am so mad at myself that I did not come here earlier and make this my go to spot for all Italian pastries. They have over a dozen different Zeppole flavors that they have on special for Saint Joseph's Day coming up. They also are running a special this Saturday, March 11 from 3 PM to 5 PM where all Zeppole are half off. I did not stop with just trying the Zeppole. I also tried their Italian cookies. Again, I was blown away. They were so fresh and delicious. I cannot stress enough for everyone to come and try Palermo's in Norridge out for themselves. This is a top-tier Italian bakery with extremely friendly service. The quality and care can be tasted in all of their food. I give palermos a rare 10 out of 10 rating. This is my new spot for all my Italian pastry needs. Next time you stop in, tell them the Chicago Food King sent you. read more
