I had the best cheese danish here on a Sunday in June. It ruined every other cheese danish for me. I finally got back towards the area and they did not have the same normal cheese danish. The danishes were oblong with either cheese or a split of cheese and berry. They tasted like other bakeries, so the thrill was gone. If I'm in the area I will see if the regular cheese danish was as delicious as the previous. read more

It was not my first time visiting, but I was coming back after a few years. There's a huge variety of baked treats at reasonable prices. I like that they have pastry baskets for the self-service because they're easier to carry than the huge metal tray (especially for children). This time, I got some cheese pastries for the adults and donuts for the kiddos. It was before 9am, and they sadly only had the strawberry churros, so I opted out. They have prepacked pastry bags available at a discount as well. Not pictured are the slices of tres leches cake and flan I bought because the leches spilled out of the container in the bag during transport. My favorite cake is tres leches and it's the moistness and sweetness that makes it a winner for me. I've had this cake at a number of places (Whole Foods makes a really good one BTW). But I was really impressed with Markellos selection, I chose the one with a chocolate topping!! It was darn good - yes indeed!! They've also got a wide offering of other favorites - cheese pastries (twice as big as Porto's in LA), churros, Bundt cakes and other Mexican pastries. They used to be 24 hours when I lived nearby. I blame my diet sins mostly on living a few blocks away. I haven't tried a 2am churro in a while so Idk.. but this place will convince any carb free living person to skip a day. I was told that it used to be a Greek place that was taken over by Mexican-American bakers. I have no idea if that's true, but there is some variety that I enjoyed so much. Pay with cash if you can, but they do take cards. There's off street parking at this friendly place. They have bread, and also sweet bread / pastry and other desserts. My personal favorites were the guava hand pie and the churros. If they sold coffee, I would probably never be able to go anywhere else for sweets. read more

Very friendly staff. But I'm afraid almost everything we purchased this morning was inedibly stale. We got a chocolate glazed donut, which was as expected. But we bought two different conches, some sort of sweet bread, and a piece of chocolate cake. The chocolate cake held up better than the sweet buns, but just about everything ended up in the trash. Maybe we shouldn't have gone on a Sunday. If you're going to give them a shot, do it on a weekday. read more

Yes indeed, Markellos is a 24 hour bakery on Lawrence Avenue tucked into a little strip mall with a very busy free parking lot fronting it. I've been here a bunch of times over the years, and they do crank out lots of fresh baked goods. Sometimes you will still see the items cooling on the racks. Although I have tried many of the selections here, I do not seem to have a "go to" item though the closest for me might be one of the churros. This bakery has been my family's go to for over 30 years. Lately, the price gauging that's going on here is robbery. Ex: a croissant two years ago cost $1.25, today it's nearly 4 dollars! Not only are the prices ridiculous, the quality has gone down as well. This one always packed bakery is often found empty selling day old baked goods. I won't be surprised if it closes and it'll be at the fault of the owners greed. Buy your baked goods else where. read more

Local owned and operated, fresh, really reasonably priced baked goods. Homeade bollilos i use them to make bomb subs and torta sandwiches, in house made tamales. My go to for traditional Mexican pastries also, very good chocoflan and tres leches too. They accept debit and credit, owner and staff are welcoming and delightful. read more

I was craving some late-night sweets and was elated to discover this place so close to my house! I went at 2 am and the variety of options and freshness of their baked goods was so impressive given the late hour. Everything I tried tasted amazing. The donuts were fluffy and soft with sweet, delicious icing. The danish had wonderful soft dough with great tasting cheese filling and strawberry jam. The strawberry pocket was flaky and had similar tasking strawberry jam as the danish. If you want something savory, their spinach croissant was absolutely delectable. I popped it in the microwave for a few seconds and it made it even more delicious. The prices were also insanely cheap for how good everything tasted. I cannot believe I haven't discovered this place earlier! I highly recommend everyone try this place!! read more

I live in Albany Park and was very glad to have found this bakery near my apartment. I grabbed a tres leches cake which is an all-time fav of mine and Markello's was terrific. They also have a nice selection of bread and the other cakes and pastries looked on point. Someone here said they don't take credit cards. I paid with my debit card and had no problems whatsoever. A little hard to find, it's very small. Tucked away on Lawrence Ave. Worth the trip. read more

This place was ridiculous they said that they were open 24 hours and that was a lie and then when you go to their website they posted different hours and woand when I went there During the hours that they said that they were open nobody was there so I'd left a message for the owner or a manager to give me a call back and that was over a week ago and they never replied to my message or message or even attempted to call me back And the reason I was so upset is because this bakery was a hour and 32 minutes away from me So I had to go to a different bakery too a career to get everything I needed If I could give no stars I would definitely do that to this company. read more

Markellos is the definition of "don't judge a book by it's cover" cliche. It is not the best looking bakery and it does not have the most good looking display. Wait, I retract! There is no display. It is located on rundown strip mall on Lawrence. Or is it Montrose? Hm not sure, but you get my point. You blink and you miss it. The good things that make this place a gem is the fact that it smells delicious when you get there. It is full of baked goods. None of them are elaborate and stunning but they are soft, fresh, flakey and just delicious. If you go by 2 PM, there is very little left for you to pick. They go like hotcakes. Grab a basket, pick about 10 things and keep in mind that you will most likely pay about 6 bucks. Definitely worth checking out. read more

There were sheets and sheets of piping hot, freshly baked bread. And it smelled soooo good. For those with a sweet tooth, there's a billion cookies, muffins, churros, elephant ears, cakes, etc. to choose from. If my friend didn't stop me, I probably would've bought everything in there. You grab a basket and some metal tongs...and off you go! It was BUSY at 9pm, too. No surprise, I guess. On weekends, they sell tamales. Believe me - I'll be back for that. When you first walk in, you notice the huge sheet pans of rolls in the middle of the store. Grab a basket & tongs and go for it! They are delicious and ridiculously cheap. The bakers in the back are constantly working, so there's always a new batch of warm pastries or bread out. I stopped by here recently and bought some rolls, tamales, and stuffed peppers. The tamales were filled with pork in a mild sauce, wrapped in banana leaves and foil. The masa was very moist, probably due to the fact that they were wrapped in banana leaves. The stuffed poblano peppers were filled with chicken, potatoes, and minced carrots, dipped in an egg batter, and lightly fried. They were both delicious. For under $9, you can buy 4 fresh-baked rolls, 2 tamales, and 2 stuffed peppers, which turned out to be a great lunch for my bf and I. They also offer churros, slices of cake, and flan. This small bakery is very popular in Albany Park, and you'll see people here at all hours of the day getting fresh-baked bread. read more

The greatest neighborhood bakery in town. As stated in my previous review, I have gone to Markello's bakery ever since it opened in the 1990's. Some things never change and I can always count that walking past the bakery I am enticed by the aroma of freshly baked goods. These days I walk in and am always surprised by the things that I find in there. They sell bread crumbs, Italian bread, rolls good for making sandwiches and for dipping into soups. If you've got a sweet tooth they have all sorts of pastries to whet your appetite from chocolate chip cookies to goat cheese filled pastries and banana bread. Markello's always smells great and they are open any day any time you can count your life on it. This place is great. So affordable, and the service is great. The employees don't speak English well but they are incredibly kind. The owner is incredibly professional and generous; we spoke over the phone briefly regarding a yelp coupon (fantastic deal) and she was just the best.
