I tried Pagoda on the recommendation of a friend who grew up going to Pagoda in the 80s and 90s. The online menu looked good, and I was happy to see Cantonese boneless chicken on it, which is a dish I rarely see these days. I called in a takeout order on a Friday evening and the food was ready quickly and the staff was friendly. There is no dine in service, which was not a problem. The food was... not good. The egg drop soup was a good color, nice and dark yellow, but quite runny and just pretty bland. The pork egg foo young was fine, had lots of pork in it, but again, was bland. The sauce that usually comes with egg foo young should be a darker, glossy brown, but the sauce that came with this was a thick, colorless, flavorless breakfast looking gravy that was awful. The Cantonese boneless chicken was terrible as well, and for some reason was drowning in the bland, colorless gravy as well. The Pagoda fried rice hardly had any meat in it, and I understood this to be their house fried rice, which should have had several types of meat included. Even the egg rolls were bland. I've been indulging in a lot of soup lately since I haven't been feeling well, and that brings me to my latest experience with Pagoda in Summerville. I consider myself a bit of a broth snob--there's something special about the time it takes to create a good chicken stock. I decided to order a small wonton soup from their website, where it was listed at $2.75. What a deal, right? However, when my husband picked up the order, we were charged $3.90. Apparently, there's been a price change per their printed menu, which wasn't reflected with their online website--a small annoyance, but worth noting. If you're in search of a good soup broth, definitely another good restaurant to try. Now, onto the soup. The broth was actually quite good--not just plain yellow chicken broth but something with a bit more flavor. I'd possibly order it again. My main gripe is that a small soup came with only two wontons. Is this normal? Maybe it is, but I've been to other places in the Charleston-Summerville area that serve more wontons even in their small soups. While I might go back, I'd recommend asking ahead about the number of wontons if that's a dealbreaker for you. You may want to upgrade to a large if two wontons won't cut it. Overall, I'd say Pagoda is worth a shot, but manage your expectations for portion sizes. read more

Yay! This is my favorite Chinese food restaurant in the area. Let's be honest, there are dozens of places to get Chinese anywhere you look. However, not all are created equal. The quality of the food is great, the flavors are superior and their customer service is excellent. One time I was going to pick-up some food and at the time they didn't have 'curbside'. I had my kids in the car with me and they just happened to fall asleep. If I went in to get the food, I would have to wake them up and I would have some cranky children for the rest of the day. I called the store, and she came out to my car to get my payment, asked and brought anything else we needed and even whispered to help keep the kiddos snoozing. All this, while it was raining outside. It's these little things that make me want to come back and support someone who has such a great heart and passion for what they do. So this was my first time going here, I've heard so much about this location and wanted to try. I was definitely expecting more of a dine in situation, I saw there was a seating area, but idk if things changed because of Covid or it's always been this way. Walking in everyone was crowded in this small area by the door. The service was nice. The food didn't take more than 15 min. It was a lot of off and I believe my family and I had enough to eat off of for a good 3 days. As far as quality, I didn't find it to be any different than going to my normal Chinese place for half the cost. There was not much flavor in the rice or the chicken pancit .. the general Tao chicken Was good but that was it... the honey chicken was fine, but too sweet... but I used the sauce to make the pancit taste like something... idk I think it was over hyped and I expected more. Had the curry chicken and it was 80% onions, 10% mushrooms and the remaining 10% was carrots, peppers and finally, chicken. The chicken was rubbery and the sauce was bland and tasteless. Sooooo, I really believe in restaurant reviews and try out restaurants based on these. However, I think that some of the hype about Pagoda Chinese restaurant on trolley rd, must be old. When I went to their website last night, it stated at the top of the page that a new family has purchased the business. In spite of that, I figured I'd try it as I'm sure the recipes hadn't changed. I ordered shrimp egg foo young and shrimp fried rice. I got home and sat down and opened the package and noticed that there was a lot of food and a lot of shrimp! Good, right? Well, most of the shrimp was not deveined!!! I figured I'll just go through and devein them as I'm sure they just missed some. But to my dismay, most of them were like that! I couldn't finish my food! I threw the whole thing away and was very disappointed! Also the gravy was extremely oily! Long time Pagoda fan here. Back when Pagoda was located in its own restaurant back in the 90s, my family and I felt in love with it. The owners lived in our neighborhood and the food was the best. Fast forwards 30 years and the food is still delicious but you have to know the right thing to order. The chicken wings are amazing! An absolute must. Also their crab Rangoon is the biggest in the area. If you order General Tsos (or anything really that is a normal menu item) ask for it to be made spicy and it adds even more flavor. Update to Pagoda restaurant since Covid. Ordered 2 trays of shrimp fried rice and chicken wings ( dinner). It has gone up .50 cents since Covid! So it's $11.50 now! Welcome back! Rice was actually good and chicken was also, but the hair and feathers on it makes me wonder if they are actually cleaning the chicken? Apparently not, because they don't eat it, they just cook it! The unfamiliar taste, that has you wondering how it's cooked, went out the door when I saw all the hair and feathers! Another thing is the spring roll that comes with the meal is mixed with shrimp and pork! So for the price of $1.50 and the price of $1.75 for a single chicken wing, you'd think can I substitute? Nope, it's not happening, but they will include more rice, but you can't even pay the .25 cent difference, nor talk to a manager! So I think it's a deal breaker with Pagoda and me! I heard the hype about this place so I decided to try it in my quest for good Chinese food in the Charleston/Summerville area. I ordered the old standby, General Tso chicken, beef fried rice, and tofu mixed vegetables. Everything was good except the General Tso which really surprised me. It had a very strong odor and taste of fennel and not a semblance of any General Tso chicken I have ever had in my life. Needless to say it was unexpected and pretty gross. The wings are a must. Every time I go to Charleston, I try to grab my husband some chicken wings from this Chinese food joint. They must marinate them in some kind of special sauce. It's one of the local favorites...it should be on one of the food network shows, honestly. This is not chain restaurant Chinese food people. Don't be fooled by the fact that it's in a strip mall with a Piggly Wiggly and a Dollar Tree...you won't be disappointed. Very reasonably priced and they have quick service...of course they do take-out...it's Chinese food...call ahead and it'll be waiting for you (still piping hot). The Pagoda soup was great; tasty but not glutinous, a meal in itself. The beef and broccoli was very good with lots of vegetables and the sauce was light, flavorful and not glutinous as well. We tried Pagoda for the first time tonight... trying to find that perfect Chinese place in the Summerville area which we have yet to find. While I can only comment on what I've tasted, my experience tells me there's better food elsewhere. The Beef with Broccoli contained about 90% broccoli (seriously), and while the beef that was in there was a decent quality meat, the sauce was lacking flavor. This is my favorite Chinese dish and I try this everywhere I go, and there are 2 other places close by that does this dish much better. The Pork Fried Rice was good - real good - everyone enjoyed it. The Hot and Sour soup was ok - we've had much better. We liked that there was no tofu in it AT ALL (which some people like, we don't... so we were happy), but there was an abundance of carrots in it and the consistency was kind of weird. Egg Rolls were ok - had better. No fortune cookies were given in our takeout meal which was a real disappointment as we all look forward to them at the end of the meal. Oh well. Also - this restaurant doesn't have Orange Chicken on it's menu. Odd. Unless you just love fried rice - I'd look elsewhere for a great Chinese experience. read more

The food here is terrific. This not processed Chinese food, rather it's home style and a nice surprise to the palate. We had chicken chow mein and egg foo young, and the chef got both of them right. Sauces are not processed and the food is not heavy with sodium. Crispy, generously sized snack noodles. The sweet tea was not watered down and tasted brewed. Huge portions. The location alongside Harris Teeter and Tuesday Morning (which closes too early, at 7:00) also makes it super convenient for other shopping. Prices are extremely reasonable, especially for the quality and amount of food. The staff were efficient, friendly, and helpful with the menu, the food arrived quickly and piping hot.
