Located off of Ladson Rd in an easily accessible area, China City has decent enough food to warrant repeat visits. That said when I came into the store it wasn't so pleasant with water all over the broken tile floor, the minimalist décor and seating options. It's like the tables are just there to let people sit while waiting for their food. That said, the cashier/owner was extremely friendly and quick to greet me. This visit, I decided not to indulge in any appetizers rather focusing on main course. Just to note it up front the food is extremely well priced with many dishes like fried rice having options for amounts. I rather liked that as it gave me a chance to sample a lot of food without having to get dinner portions. The review I'll start with the pork fried rice. I'm not sure why, but there was a musty smell to it, like it picked up a funk in the fridge (most fried rice is cooked the day before and held in a fridge over night to allow crystal formation leading to a more absorbent rice the next day). The rice was cooked perfectly however I would have preferred a little more egg and small veggies like peas in it. The pork was salty perfection and almost unctuous to the mouth. It was a decent dish but not stellar. The beef and broccoli lost me. The beef had little flavor and extremely chewy, perhaps by not adding baking soda to tenderize the meat. The broccoli was extremely stiff and could have used a little more cooking time all while the sauce wasn't very flavorful. I was so looking forward to this dish too. Next up was the Lo Mein. I wish restaurants would be more consistent as these noodles weren't plump round but almost ramen and slender like. While this may sound trivial the shape of food makes a different in flavor. For instance, elbow macaroni doesn't taste like spaghetti even though they're the same ingredients. That's because it hits the taste buds differently and tricks our minds into thinking it's a flavor rather than texture. Finally, and I noticed this off the bat, is great Chinese restaurants have a slight smoky flavor to Lo Mein and fried rice among some other dishes. This is subtle yet can really elevate the dish and it comes from a wok that's been seasoned for years. I know I'm nitpicking here but these things really make a difference. Overall, the dish was average but enough shrimp were in it to make it cost feasible and lots of cabbage and carrots. The final dish was the Mei Fun which I absolutely loved as it was very close to traditional. Thin rice noodles like vermicelli are cooking without any kind of sauce to note while plenty of onions, carrots and eggs along with the meat are present. I'm still not sure why they skipped the green onion tops and bean sprouts as that's almost the star of the dish. Still, the dish was cooked perfectly and I enjoyed it. Overall, China City is an above average Chinese restaurant with traditional fair. While all the food doesn't hit the bullseye, it's not that far off, just personal knit picking on my part. Well, besides the chewy beef and musty rice. The people are nice and while I think the inside of the restaurant needs some TLC, if they're business is 90% delivery then it's a moot point. The food is the star and it's not bad. Give it a try if you have that itch!

Sweet and sour chicken, pork fried rice and a spring roll

My daughter and I stopped by here to order take-out a few weeks ago. We ordered sweet & sour chicken, pork fried rice and some spring rolls. They said it would take 10 minutes but it was much quicker than that. Food was still hot when we got home, tasted great and we still had some left over for the next day's lunch. There are tables and chairs in the restaurant but nobody was eating in - I think they mainly deal with deliveries and take-out. Employees were friendly.

We came in for a bite to eat before our movie and thought it was a bit pricey... then we got our food. $10 gets you a full box of meat and broccoli and a plate of rice. Would recommend one meal split between two people honestly. Only problem for me was the cleanliness of the tables. The table we sat at was sticky and some nearby tables were dirty as well. Other than that it was awesome! Picture I took was after we ate half of our food!

Welcoming front door

Phenomenal Chinese centric food in the scope of Summerville. Service is quick and welcoming. The atmosphere is completed with regulars that consistently return for their well cooked Chinese rooted dinner. Some regulars return more so for the employees that are well know for their communication skills ranging from Spanish to English, as well as their long time commitment to 15+ years of giving quality work everyday to people of all different backgrounds.

I called in an order and was told 15 minutes by the friendly gentleman on the phone, and sure enough, the food was ready when I arrived. We ordered two soups and four different combinations to try. The restaurant was clean and tidy, and the staff very kind. The egg drop soup was great - it's a sort of measuring stick for me with Chinese takeout, and China Wok's was very nice. The egg rolls were crispy and delicious, and the sweet & sour chicken, boneless spare ribs, and sesame chicken were as expected. The pork egg foo young was better than I thought it might be, but the brown sauce/gravy that comes with it was disappointing - thick, gloopy, pale, and tasted mostly of flour. Honestly, China Wok was a very pleasant surprise, and I would definitely order from them again!

And what's happy hour without the cocktails? I had the Chinese Awakening (strong but great) and the Golden Phoenix (which was purple and not gold, but still good). I'd definitely return for the full dining experience next time I'm back home!

The quality of the food is great, the flavors are superior and their customer service is excellent. One time I was going to pick-up some food and at the time they didn't have 'curbside'. I had my kids in the car with me and they just happened to fall asleep. If I went in to get the food, I would have to wake them up and I would have some cranky children for the rest of the day. I called the store, and she came out to my car to get my payment, asked and brought anything else we needed and even whispered to help keep the kiddos snoozing. All this, while it was raining outside. It's these little things that make me want to come back and support someone who has such a great heart and passion for what they do. We believe our search is over, and we declare Great Wall our new go-to spot. We walked up to the counter and the young man patiently took our order. We then sat down and noted most of the orders ready for take out were for rice and fried chicken. I became a little anxious, as our order seemed to drag on, and I wondered silently if we were set for another disappointment. We've been hoping to find a new restaurant before Christmas Day, as we've planned this as our yuletide meal this year, and we've been searching since Fortune Garden unexpectedly closed on New Years Day this year. Our order was finally called, we were granted our various sauces, we retrieved everything and headed home. We began unpacking everything from the brown paper bag and I noticed a couple of things immediately: our order was correct, the food was hot...but then, something else caught my eye. The egg foo young gravy. Now, if you're a connoisseur of the egg foo young, you've undoubtedly run across sub-par gravy: thick, lumpy, gray and not terribly inviting. This was not that gravy. The concoction was a dark brown, silky and smooth. The taste of egg foo young and gravy was heavenly. We then tried the house special fried rice and the egg rolls. Definitely closest to our beloved Fortune Garden. You should make Great Wall your new forever Chinese takeout restaurants. Maybe we'll see you there on Christmas!
