Packards confounds me because a self-professed food snob at times, I do not understand why I keep going back. Well, I kind of do. Packards is a bar and resteraunt that's decor is the signs of old businesses that failed in Noho (which I find amusing) and a bunch of other random 'flair' which normally really turns me off. But I get over it. The service is average. Never had a bad experience with it but there was also nothing above and beyond. The food is where I am torn. They have an average 'good' beer selection -meaning they have about 20 beers of average quality and nothing particularly rare or special- but it beats having your only options be Coors, Miller, or Bud light. Their menu is huge- which for me is a red flag. And if it's size didn't make me leery, the horrifying illustrations did. I swear to god the owner must have had a sadistic nephew that was alright at drawing and a fan of The Far Side and hired him to make a menu that features cartoon-y animals being brutally killed and strange jokes. It's enough to make someone become a vegetarian. The quality of the food I have found usually to be pretty average, a tiny bit better. BUT as of October 2012 I have not eaten there because the quality seemed to drop considerably. Suddenly the things I found quite good (stuffed mushrooms, clam chowder, mozzarella tomato basil panini, etc) were sub-par. I'm not sure if they changed hands in the kitchen...but I don't know what is going on. Overall: Here's the bottom line about Packards. If it's later than 10:30pm in Noho and you're looking to still get a drink, and eat some bar food with friends for not a ton of money, it's your place to go. It may be crowded with bros and bro-hoes, but hell, you're really hungry and also really want to get drunk. read more

So, I recommended to a group of friends we go to Packards for dinner prior to heading to a show at the Calvin. Bad call, the service was soooooooo slowwwwwww! 25 mins to get a beer. Over an hour to get burgers. I would like to say it was the Resturant but maybe it is our server. People who came in 45 mins after us were served before us. You make the call. In either case; awful. Was in town for a show at the Iron Horse to see Amos Lee. We stopped in Packard's as we were looking to grab a drink and a burger. We happened upon Packard's because we parked right down the street from there. Packard's is what seems like a good neighborhood watering hole. As we sit down at the bar, I notice the place is a lot bigger than i expected. In fact, the barkeep informs me there is an outside area as well. Came in for a brew, but saw the Campari and thought it would be a good time for a Negroni on this hot summer night - I asked the bartender and he obliges with a fantastic cocktail...at less than $5 nonetheless!! I ordered a Packard burger, which was good. It had a horseradish cream sauce on it. It would have been great if the horseradish came through a bit more, i was looking for that kick. But the burger was cooked as ordered and the spicy fries were excellent. Along with a refreshing Negroni, there was some Jazz playing on the radio - Miles Davis to be exact. After talking with the barkeep for a bit, and telling him how I had recently been getting into Miles Davis and Coltrane, he was nice enough to jot down a few other tracks and jazz artists that he enjoyed. First off...I'm new to Yelp so I don't know if there is a way to let administrators know, but there are two pages for Packard's getting reviews: one with the apostrophe, and one without. The sign out front has an apostrophe. I love going to Packard's. Especially after a night at work, and also especially for lunch with the boyfriend when we can't decide where else to go. It's pub food, but the menu is gigantic (and humorously written!). Burgers, the 1/2 panini with soup/salad AND chips and salsa, dragon fries, a deep fried burger? We joke that they must have 15 fryers back there...but if I'm in the mood to go to Packard's, I'm okay with that. Drunk-me can never avoid the Mexican fries, but that's because they come with cheese sauce. Drunk-me is a total sucker for cheese sauce. The food is not gourmet...but come on. It's a pub with a huge menu - give them some credit; eat your fried food and love it. The staff is always so friendly. There is a patio for smoking outside. The decor is mostly made up of old signage from around town, almost like a Fridays but immensely better. Plenty of pool tables if that's your thing. Good amount of beers on draft, pretty extensive bottled list. As a tiny complaint, my mojito was too sweet - I'd get it with less simple syrup next time. read more

My kid brother brought me here... heaven to those of us who need character in our drinking holes! Food is great... drinks are great... funky old school bar with the right amount of dive perfection! I try and frequent this place on every trip east! I love their menu, HUGE wonderful pub fare... the chicken wings are great, as are everyone of the wraps and burgers that we've tried! You're thinking of eating at Packard's? Seriously? I mean, yeah, I've eaten here too, plenty of times. But for one of two reasons. Either, it's a big group of people out drinking beer together, and food is an afterthought; or, two, it's after 10 or 11 at night and there's nowhere else in town to sit down for a meal. (Well, Sierra Grille, but maybe that's packed, if it's a weekend, or it's too expensive, or out of the way.) As a place to drink beer, Packard's is acceptable, but the food is plain bad. Fries? Soggy, generic, just sad when you think about the amazing Belgian-style fries at Sierra or the Dirty Truth. Sandwiches? Everything is so slathered in some over-sweet sauce, it hardly matters if it's chicken or beef or pork in there. Wing's? Go to Joe's Pizza. Salads? Please. Chili? Well, ok, the chili is ok. With jalapenos out of a jar, but ok. But let's be honest, nobody thinking of going to Packard's is reading Yelp reviews. You're going there to play pool and have some beer and maybe smoke out in the courtyard and, oh right, have a sandwich or something. In which case great, you'll have a good time. While they try really hard to be an all-American sports bar, that's not the easiest task smack dab in the middle of crunchy granola Northampton. But I kind of like it like that. You've got a few people yelling at TVs whenever a game's on and then you just have your run-of-the-mill Noho folk, which, if you know the town, you know that there's nothing run-of-the-mill about them. Drinks are well priced compared to the other bars in town, and they offer a pretty great selection. There are three floors, so finding somewhere to sit/chill usually isn't a problem. And if you sit at the bar, everyone's friendly in that trademark Western Mass way. Plus, free champagne on your birthday! I haven't tried much of their food, but their spicy fries are so so good. I could do without the cartoons on the menu - they make the place look much skeevier than it actually is. read more

I definitely wasn't a big fan of this place. I love the decor. The whole place has signs of old businesses that has failed in Northampton. I thought the idea was very clever and cute. I breezed into town for a show at the Calvin down the street and had some minutes for a bevvie. Randomly strolling around I stumbled into Packard's and it is a seriously solid sit-down swill spot. I did not have any food, but I can say that the beer selection was great, the service was extremely welcoming and free of attitude. If you like pool come here! plenty of pool tables and often servers that come to you. This place has 3 floors of space with the 3rd being for private parties at times. They also have a small outside area, generally smokers hangout. 2 dart boards and afew video games are also on the 2nd floor. They do have a good selection of draft beers, something for everyone and i would not recommend any mixed drinks. PLEASE get new dart boards! read more

I want to like this place but it really is hit or miss. I've had great food here and fun waitstaff but also crappy food and downright rude waitresses. The last time I stopped in for lunch I ordered a beer and the waitress (who was probably 12 years younger than me) said something sarcastic and asked to see my ID. As an out of towner visiting the area with a friend out for her birthday I had a blast here. We came in around 9pm on a monday night and were able to get a pool table right away. Games only cost a $1 and playing darts is free. We drank, we were entertained, and we didn't have to pay an arm and a leg. The only thing that was a bit of a bummer was that the music only plays upstairs if you feed the jukebox. Lucky for us the guys at the other table kept it going most of the time. Usually Packards is great but tonight we waited half an hour for service that never came. The waitresses avoided us completely and even after we went up and talked to them three seperate times they were rude and still did not come to the table. The third time we went up they told us the kitchen was closing in two minutes so we couldn't order but let us after we pointed out that the kitchen was not actually closed. They dropped the food on the table with no eye contact and no response, we never got waters, silverware, or napkins. They then tried to add on an 18% gratuity to the bill, and rolled their eyes and walked away when I asked about why they would add on a tip for not doing anything. The manager we spoke to was useless and told us "oh everybody has bad nights". Overall horrible service and management. read more

Good God, Packard's is an institution in Northampton. Being a native of Happy Valley, I know Packard's as the ultimate neighborhood pub in the area for the past few eons. And my dinner there Saturday evening did not disappoint. My pretty traveling companion and I met up with one of my high school cronies for some dining and some catching up. It was the first time I'd been in the joint in several years, and it was as if the place didn't change a bit. Some dear departed businesses have added signage in the facility (one of the schticks of the place...it's memory lane for those of us with strong ties to the area), but otherwise, nothing has changed. Solid food experience. I had a nice plate of wings (not wingettes...full sized wings) that could have used some more sauce. Nevertheless, tasty indeed. The side of onion rings I ordered was nice. My high school pal had a panini that looked great, and my date had a nice wrap. Kudos of Meghan, our server, who made sure to figure out exactly what was safe on the menu for my lovely companion (she has Celiac's disease). Meghan was able to efficiently find drinks and meals for my girl that pleased her taste buds and filled her tummy. Meghan did a great job. All in all, a solid 4-star experience at an oldie but goodie in NoHo, MA. When in town, craving comfort food or a neighborhood bar experience...go here. Do not delay. You'll thank me later. The only reason I went Packards is for the full size pool tables. They still have them but they don't have the BASIC customer service anymore. After reading other reviews I feel I should share my experiences as there seems to be a trend. There used to be this older gentleman at the door who was awesome to talk to and got along with everyone. I always looked forward to seeing him when I went. He'd greet us when we walked in and said have a good night when we left and if I remember correctly, would pull the string to open the door, (the extra touch) Pretty standard for anyone working this sector, hell pretty standard for every day life, even for random folks. Well upon leaving, the waitress, bouncer or any one of those workers standing by the door had NOTHING to say. What's the deal here? Then there is the waitress taking orders for pool players, This is the second time dealing with her. I thought the first time she was just having a bad night. Nope, she's just really cold and gives off negative vibes because the second time was the same. It wasn't just me feeling it either... I don't need that type of negativity in my life, no one does... Also what's up with the bartender? Did she think we snuck in from the underground tunnel or something? It's Friday night, bouncer is checking ID's and stamping everyone coming in to this scarcely populated bar, so why would you waste each others time and ask if we have a stamp? Never in my life has this double standard occured.. That was no biggie but all these little things add up and give the whole Packards experience a negative one, which could explain why it was not busy like it used to be. Needless to say, I will not be going to Packards anymore. I will rather drive to Amherst and support Mike's Billiards. Mike's Billiards is the real deal, $6/hr vs $12/hr, Top tier table/felt, NEVER EVER any negativity there, always smiles and small talk with everyone. Play straight till closing time, and PAST IT with no issue at all, unlike Packards where that same waitress kicks you out at 1:40 because she has no concept of customer service. Last call is 1:30 so how does that work? These new younger folks working here need to grasp the basics of customer service. It's utterly disappointing to me as someone who owned and ran a family restaurant in the Valley for 7 years. Ok. To be fair, I heard from people sitting around us that this place normally has good service. Maybe it was an off night. A really, REALLY off night. The food is extremely mediocre, duh, but it's a bar. I knew that and didn't care. But I was there for half an hour, and we ordered drinks, fine, we ordered fries, they came out incorrectly (yes...fries), ordered another app and the woman waiting on us put in the wrong order, then gave us both (one on the house but charged us for the more expensive one we didn't order?) the table behind us also had fries messed up in the same way (....) and their beers were warm, then the server totally abandoned the table all together. OK - Please read the entire review before making any judgements. I have lived in the Pioneer Valley going on 15 years now and yesterday was my first try at Packard's. I took my wife and two small children on the advice of friends who have children the same age. We knew parking would be a disaster during holiday time in Northampton, so we chose 11:45am on a Sunday to go. When we walked in, we were the only folks in the place looking to eat lunch. So, we assumed the service would be outstanding and we'd be in and out of there efficiently. We all know what happens when one assumes... We had to sit in the back dining room due to our need for a highchair...but remember, we were the ONLY diners in the place. After the first 20 min of sitting in silence, the waitress took our drink order..it came...we drank...then silence again for another 20 min. By the time we ordered, we hardley cared. We got wings to start and burgers to follow...praying the kids didn't melt down. The food was good, and I'm sure it's a fun place to go when full - perhaps we just hit it at the wrong time. Our experience was so bad, I almost forgot to say the wings and blue cheese (homemade) were outstanding...they're different...char-broiled, tips on (I love that) and not greasy at all. I've been going to Packards since the late 80's. Even worked there briefly. My favorite item on the menu has always been the bbq chicken potato skins. I always order them when I come back to town. Over the years they started to shrink. Well went back today to find out they went back to the original format. Big and fat and delicious! Thanks to the new kitchen manager. Stopped here on a Wednesday evening at 5 and it was fairly quiet. We seated ourselves in one of the small booths on the bar side and after a few minutes a waitress came over to take our order. I asked for a sample of the Brewmaster Jack's Ambrewsia IPA but didn't care for it so I ordered a Harpoon IPA. About 10 minutes later a waiter came back with our drinks, a rather small margarita for my date and a Brewmaster Jack's Ambrewsia IPA for me. I explained I didn't care for the Brewmaster Jack's Ambrewsia IPA and had ordered a Harpoon IPA. 5 minutes later I had my Harpoon. My date ordered chicken tenders and I ordered the fish and chip dinner. The waiter left and when he came by again I asked if I could have a salad with the meal, as it's listed as coming with the meal. It seemed like it was an afterthought to the waiter. The next time he went by I asked if I could have blue cheese dressing for the salad, as he had never asked what dressing I wanted. After a 15-20 minute wait, he brought the chicken tenders and my fish and chip. He said he would be back with the salad. Packards use to have those big, thick meaty handcut fries but alas, no, now they serve those thin shoestring fries like McDonalds! Ah, but the fish, that is the focus and it was beer battered and very nearly bullet proof. The batter was more of a protective outershell than a part of the dish, very overcooked and inedible. The fish was very thin, less than a half inch and overcooked as well. We flagged down the waiter and I explained the fish was overcooked, hard and inedible. I asked if I could have a thicker piece of fish and after 15 minutes, he did return with a thicker piece of fish, better than the first piece but still nothing to warrant ordering again. This used to be my go-to place in Northampton for beer and food, often driving 45 miles with Packards as my destination. There are too many good pubs and restaurants in Northampton to enjoy rather than to bother coming back to mediocre food and service. read more

I had not been in Northampton for decades- but, went to Packard's for dinner and drinks last week to see how 'one of the oldest eateries' in the area had fared [having gone to college in the 70's]. We were not disappointed! We started with the grilled veggie skewers (terrific sauce) and chicken nachos to accompany our local Dirty Girl beers :) My husband ordered the beef short ribs with polenta - perfect Bistro dinning on a cool fall evening. Chef Collin, out did himself! This is a MUST order. And my Reuben sandwich was mouthwatering. The third order was a cheeseburger with blue cheese, avocado and bacon. My brother couldn't say enough about the quality, combination of food and flavor. I know Packard's is known for its eclectic furnishing (certainly entertaining) and 'bar scene', but truly Collin has put the FOOD on the map as well! We WILL drive back from NH to eat here again. I'd like to start out by saying that this place ranks at least 2nd on my list of worst restaurant service ever. We had a party of 6 and were seated in the upstairs area pretty much in a back corner. My grandfather has trouble walking and uses a cane, so one would think that we would be seated somewhere that stairs wouldn't be necessary. Granted, it was a Friday night & on the busier side but there were some tables available. Part of our party arrived later, so there were already drinks on the table. But, after sitting around waiting for about 10-15 minutes waiting for a waitress to take the rest of the drink orders we finally flagged someone down from another section who helped us out. After finally putting in the orders and getting our drinks, we noticed that one of the drink orders was wrong and they had also forgotten to bring out a glass (that was requested) for one of the beers that we'd ordered. In addition to that, my drink was served with a bunch of black and white specks of who knows what floating around in it. After waiting another 5 minutes or so someone in our party went to hunt down/request a manager who also took about 10 minutes to get to our table. The manager did try to make it right, getting our new drinks to us and taking them off of the bill. When the waitress brings over the new drinks, she does apologize but then hurries off without asking if we need anything else. One of the people at my table was literally calling after her trying to order something else and that was a total fail. There was also never water brought to our table, and the entire time we were there someone stopped by maybe once to check on how we were doing. Again, the restaurant was somewhat busy when we had arrived but had slowed down substantially throughout our visit. Thankfully, there were no issues putting in the food orders, though it did take a bit to actually make happen. The food came out and was your typical bar fare & the quality was to be expected. Though, I got a kids meal and the patty on the burger was so dry and shriveled looking I may has well of gone to a fast food joint and that would've seemed like gourmet. My cousin also got her meal, and the lettuce used as a garnish was all black and brown around the edges. Sure, this isn't to be consumed but come on, that's pretty gross. The drinks were good at least, and made pretty strong so there's that. Finally got to the point of paying our bill, and the girl that helped out taking our initial drink orders comes to our table and we ask if she's at least getting some of the tip (seeing as she was the one that ended up doing most of the work for the table). She then explains to us that it was our waitresses first night working on her own and they were a bit short handed. Honestly, if they had told us all of this upfront it may not have been "as" bad. But, if you have a table consistently hunting your waitress down maybe it would've been a good idea to have someone backing her up a bit more. Only reason this was given 2 stars and not one, the manager did try to make the drink issue right and they did allow me a kids meal (which most places don't allow adults to do).. As a bar, this place seems pretty cool but as a sit down restaurant not so much. read more

The fries are very middle of the road. Still, Packard's just has that ambiance that makes you want to linger. Indeed, as others have said, this is a Northampton institution. I first dropped in back in college days (over 30 years ago now), and was badly disappointed when the "strawberry burger" they had on the menu couldn't be provided due to having run out of berries. I'm a new arrivee to Northampton. Before coming here, I lived in Oakland, which has scads of bars, restaurants, and cafes. None there, can match Packard's for food, atmosphere, and especially, service. Packard's is the place to go in downtown Noho, if you want good hardy food. Don't get me wrong, I like salads and such, as much as the next person. But sometimes, you gotta have grub that sticks to your ribs. Speaking of ribs, Packard's BBQ pork ribs are among the best I've had in a restaurant. They serve them fork-tender, with a sweet, tangy BBQ sauce. BBQ rib-lovers won't be disappointed. Other notable items on their menu, are their grilled chicken Teriyaki, fish and chips, clam chowder, lobster bisque, and new york strip steak. All of their dinners come with choice of soup or salad, and various side dishes. Though I don't drink, I see that their bar is usually full of happy patrons. It's got a rustic, old-time Tavern ambiance. A big-screen TV, and a jukebox, help keep the bar patrons entertained. Packard's also has a small patio, for those who wish to enjoy their food and drinks outdoors. Packard's also boasts a wonderfully eccentric decor. Musical instruments, neon signs, and intriguing artifacts adorn the walls. The service is top-notch too. It's quick, and the waitresses treat their customers like old friends. Service like that, is mostly nonexistent these days. It's refreshing, to be treated like your satisfaction as a customer, means alot to them. I highly recommend Packard's. It's among the best, of downtown Noho's bar/cafes. read more

Let me first say that Packard's has some of the most CONSISTENTLY good food in Northampton. You know you're going to have a fresh, delicious meal every time you go there. Some of their menu items are pretty creative, and they have good options for every type of eater (vegetarian, etc). The atmosphere is fun, especially if you're from the area and recognize a lot of the decorations (which were previously signs for businesses that have closed or moved). The illustrations on the menu are adorable. On a slow night, it's the perfect place to grab a bite and a beer. However, on a busy night, it's extremely aggravating to find a table and get enough attention from your server (it always seems understaffed on busy nights). Maybe that explains why some of the servers are really cranky. Other servers are just AMAZING--so just hope you get one of the good ones! read more

We were eating in the back during the day. We looked up at the "crazy" stuff hanging from the ceiling to notice 5 inch caked on dust and spiderwebs everywhere. It was gross, dirt/dust all hanging there above us while we were eating. Then we proceeded upstairs to play pool and found a nice community of fruit flies living in the corner of the room in the carpet, under the drink table (play by the hour pool). It was filthy. Waited at the table to pay, 32 minutes AFTER we finished our meal, because waitress never came back to check in on us. Absolutely terrible service here tonight. Waitress was beyond inattentive, and took forever to come back to our table each time. Was sat right away, was brought two waters after a few minutes of sitting down. Orders weren't taken for another 10 or so minutes. Food came out quick and was absolutely delicious! I ate the Cajun Chicken Wrap with a side of Spicy French Fries, and my boyfriend ate the Grilled Honey Mustard Chicken Sandwich, same fries. Again, food was absolutely delicious! Never have I ever had service that made me wait this long. This is a shame because I love coming to this restaurant and never before have had any sort of problems! I would rate it 3 stars based solely on food but the service was just that not good! read more
