Price was middle of the road, he was licensed and would pull permits, Martin did not try to over sell job, and more importantly company is out of Lakewood (my home town). I wanted to replace 65' of a block wall which was in pretty bad shape. Total job took 2 weeks. Partially because of the holiday and scheduling inspector. Pacificland Constructors did a wonderful job pouring cement throughout the exterior of my house and adding a drainage system. They gave me a very competitive quote, were very courteous throughout and did a remarkable job cleaning up after they left. I was pleasantly surprised at how well they were able to keep cement off my walls and fences. Topnotch work. Will be contacting them again when I'm ready to finish the south side of my property. Highly recommended. Update 2018: So Pacificland came back out this year to cement my other walkway, and they did an unbelievable job. They put drainage through out the entire length of the walkway and cemented me a platform for my A/C unit to very specific dimensions. Everything was almost perfect. When Martin came out to inspect the finished project he noticed a little water accumulating by one of the drains. I told him, this seemed to be a dead spot, that all the other drains drained perfectly except here. He told me not to worry, he'd have a guy come out and fix it. By the end of the week it was done. UPDATE 2: Wow, sooo glad I'm not working with this company! First of, I didn't back out in January. He emailed me a contract after our 1st consultation. After reviewing the contract, I had some questions and was concerned about the winter weather for the type of work I proposed. I promised to get back to him later and I did. This was all BEFORE signing the contract. As consumers, we should have a chance to do this and not feel pressured to sign the contract. Doing these types of projects cost a lot of our hard earned money and we should be well informed. The problem starts AFTER we signed the contract. We never heard from him to confirm the work. I mean, what the heck..? UPDATE: The owner, Martin E Ruvalcaba, is not telling the whole truth. I never heard from him after I submitted the contract. I was thinking; no biggie, he's prob just busy. So 3 days before the project was due to start, I texted him during business hours on Friday at 12pm to confirm. No response. That's why I had to contact him over the weekend since the project was due to start on Monday. All he had to do was confirm. That should only take 1 minute to text/call. Prior to signing the contract, he was quick to answer my questions; even got a text from him on a Saturday at 4:40am! Also, I texted on Friday to confirm, not to cancel the contract. But now that I know how he communicates with customers, I don't like it and won't be working with him. Also, interesting how he's able to respond right away to yelp reviews. 4/28/19 Submitted my contract with Martin Jr. and never heard from him again. Went to his "office" (ie his parents' house) to get my contract back and his Mom said it's at his other office. Full of BS b/c he doesn't have another office! Wasted my time. This past week is the 3rd time we've used Pacificland over the past 14 years...the first was way back when Martin, the father, was pretty much on his own. They have remodeled a fireplace, built a front patio and remodeled front steps, added to an existing patio and now repaired another patio because of a dead tree. In every case the work has been excellent. Sometimes the owner does the work and other times his workers do the job. My son has also used them and was very happy. They are thoughtful, courteous, create workable plans, are reasonably priced and clean up after themselves. It has always been my philosophy and practice to publically extol the results of jobs well done. In most cases I have gone above and beyond in providing as much positive feedback as possible knowing how much it is appreciated and the amount of benefit received from it by the business owner. Concurrently, I have also avoided taking the "low road" to post negative feedback in those cases where poor service was received, ether perceived or legitimately experienced. Knowing that it does no one any good and cannot correct what has happened. But in the case of Pacificland Constructors, I was overwhelming compelled to post the details of my interaction with and the lack of responsiveness from one of the principals of the company. The request was fairly simple, a formal measurement and quote for the installation of a masonry (block) privacy wall, (approximately 85 linear feet and 6 feet tall), to surround our personal residence. The initial telephone conversation occurred on a Thursday morning and began with the explanation of the circumstances involved, location of the home, timeline and concluded with a commitment made by the company for the owner to come out to the house, two days later (Saturday) to take the measurements and return the quote for my consideration. In preparation for the onsite visit I sent photos of the property to the principal, highlighting where the block walls were to be installed as well as a formal measurement of those locations previously provided by a vinyl fencing company whose product was considered as an option to the block walls....all in the spirit of providing as much information as possible to assist in the process. Forsaking taking up too much more space here with text, the bottom line is no one showed up on Saturday, nor was a response received from my text inquiry regarding whether or not someone was going to show up on Saturday, nor were any responses received from multiple follow up texts and phone voice mail messages left at all three of the company's functioning telephone numbers. A bit of comic relieve is due here, upon calling two of the phone numbers the voice recording touts the family owned nature of the company, its 20 year history of notable customer service and finally the pledge of your call being returned within 24 hours??? My watch must have stopped, because this has been the longest 24 hour period experienced to date. While I am unable to upload photos to this post, I have posted photos of screenshots of the text exchanges between me and the company's principal, to Pacificland's photo page, to document my experience so not to be perceived as having "sour grapes" and posting disparaging remarks indiscriminately. You can draw your own conclusions. But having been in the customer service business for over 40 years myself, the courtesy of a reply, irrespective of whether or not its what the customer wants to hear, is paramount and should be the foundation (pardon the pun) of any company's culture and value proposition. For the lack of this practice, Pacificland's rating above should be a zero, if not a negative number, but this program does not afford the opportunity to provide such a rating. read more

Great Father and Son team! They did a great job on our house. New front steps, walkway to street, driveway, sidewalk, back patio and back steps. Martin Jr. came out to give me the quote and was able to understand and expand on what I envisioned for our home. They worked everyday and got the job done fairly quickly. Me and my wife did extensive research for finding a masonry contractor in Long Beach to assist us with a CMU block wall installation and that is when we found Pacificland Constructors. We previously had a mixture of old fencing plus an existing block wall with structural issues and it was a matter of time before it fell over and damaged our property. Martin from Pacificland surveyed the area and was able to integrate our new CMU block wall with existing block wall while reinforcing the older wall. NOTE: This review is for Pacificland Constructors, which appears to be listed on Yelp as "Pacifcland Masonry." PROBLEM: To make a long story short, the retaining fountain walls spanning the length of five houses had been destroyed and damaged by overgrowing and unmanageable tree roots. The foundation walls were cracked by extensive lateral pressure. Structural support evaluations revealed that the trees and tree roots needed to be completely removed and the foundation walls needed to be rebuilt. SOLUTION: Pacificland came to the rescue. After the City removed all the trees, Martin Ruvalcaba (the owner) and his team cleared the deep sitted roots and in less than a month, Martin and his team rebuilt the foundation walls. He also planted shrubbery and completed the construction and masonry projects for five houses in record time. Not only did they do a great job (you can't even tell the difference between the old walls and the new walls), but Pacificland performed all its services well within the budget and financial constraints. Their workmanship and craftsmanship are superb. The five households and the city management and officials who were involved in overseeing the construction did not have any complaints and we all are very satisfied with their work product. Martin and his team were professional and extremely understanding, which is what you want from contractors because you have to be able to trust them to (1) do a good job and (2) run a clean, honest business so you don't have to worry about being scammed, especially when it comes to home improvement issues. Even when unforeseen complications arose (e.g., after the City cleared away the shrubbery and ivy surrounding the foundation walls, additional cracks and damaged areas of the walls were discovered), Martin and his team did not make the situation complicated. Instead, they handled the issue and didn't even ask for additional compensation. It's hard to find honest people like that, but Pacificland is quite good at what they do and use good, hard-working construction workers. Martin and his team members were honest, responsive, reliable, responsible and accountable. They have great comaraderie and worked very well as a team. Their operations were seamless, and they all shared an incredible work ethic and commitment to completing the job. Martin and his team even came to work on rainy days and on the weekend to complete the construction jobs, even though most construction companies and contractors would have taken the day off. They were able to balance the demands of five different households AND the policies, procedures and regulations instituted by the City. They did a great job and were punctual, mindful of being cost-sensitive and stayed within budget. They finished building the foundation walls within our timetables, even though we thought that such a project would take several months. read more

I wanted a wall removed from my house and the original contractors I was working with said they could only remove 40% of the wall. I was skeptical (and stubborn), and decided to call on Pacificland. Martin was very professional and knowledgeable in coming up with the specs and plans for the wall coming down. He's an engineer by trade so I trusted his work. Just had Pacificland do a bunch of work . They removed two complete walls between kitchen/dining room and kitchen/laundry room, two half walls between dining/living room, which required temporarily building support walls while a new beam was installed . Removed a window from our kitchen and patched it . Installed a slider in my garage . Installed a slider where our back door use to be . They completely transformed our closed up floor plan to a wide open concept . The first time I spoke to Martin jr. I could tell he was a profesional guy . He comes with an engineering background and in my opinion is a bit over qualified for home remodeling , but hey better for us right ! He wrote up an incredibly detailed offer that covered every little thing I told him we wanted . How about that a contractor that listens . Seriuosly he lays everyhting is such a precise way that I knew our house was in good hands . Martin senior took over from there .He runs a great crew . Its easy to see where jr. gets his profesional work/people skills from . Every day you could tell that they had a plan and it was executed perfectly . These guys are totally experienced pros and easy to work with. Pacificland basically did two projects for me. One was a sidewalk repair mandated by the City in order to get my permits. It was supposed to be 8 contiguous blocks of concrete replacement, which turned out to be 10 after the inspector came. In addition, the roots underneath the concrete needed to be grinded down (instead of cut), per the City arborist. Martin handled all of these concerns very easily. The second project was a complete redo of my driveway (adding a 3-point turnaround), a new walkway from the sidewalk to my house, a new back path from my garage to our side entrance, and walkway from the side entrance to the front of the house. We had some (placement and width) adjustments after they dug out the pathway, they also handled these without any difficulty. The path from the garage to our side entrance had to meet and fit with existing cement steps. The path from the sidewalk to our front entrance had to join with our front (brick) steps. Both of these conditions were tastefully and beautifully done. Martin and his father quoted me a very reasonable and fair price, they worked quickly and expertly, and handled everything I threw at them. After they were done, my neighbors also complimented us on the work they did. Martin called us after the work was completed to make sure everything was okay. You really couldn't ask for anything more. Great work and great customer service. We are completely satisfied clients and for sure will call them again for any future work. read more

It took me a while to check out yelp reviews that's how I found Pacificland Constructors and I am glad I did. I reached out through the yelp app not expecting a response for a couple of days. I got a response within a couple of minutes. I got a quote within an hour after telling Martin what I wanted. He emailed me the contract which I did not see as it went to my spam folder. I first contacted Martin and Pacific Land Constructors while my wife and I were in escrow. During the inspection of our house, the inspector noticed some cracks in the foundation and recommended that we get it fixed. Given we had to remove the inspection contingency within a few days, I needed a contractor that could act fast and provide us with a quote. I contacted multiple companies, but none were willing to accommodate my timeline. Fortunately, I managed to get in contact with Martin. Martin was very professional from the beginning. In spite of having a full schedule, he managed to fit me in and provided a very competitive and reasonable quote. Given PLC's stellar reviews, I went ahead and hired them. From start to finish, Martin and his team were very attentive and professional. Martin would check in with me on a daily basis to provide an update on the project. Martin and his team made what appeared to be a difficult and rigorous foundation project, an easy task. More importantly, they were able to finish the project ahead of schedule. What sets PLC from most small, family-owned construction firms is that they provide a "one stop shop" service. Martin is an engineer, so our entire job was kept in-house (unlike most other companies that outsource the engineering portion of projects). This is very uncommon with smaller companies. It's good that we found a family-owned construction company capable of providing the highest level of service. I've was so impressed with their work that I hired them to do some additional work for me. I highly recommend PLC to anyone. This was just the kind of company we were looking for when we starting looking for someone to build our block fence. Martin Jr came out and looked at our property, followed through with a quote and gave us an estimate of when we could expect them to start and finish. After we agreed to go with them, we were sent a complete set of paperwork, including the contract, a copy of their contractor's license, proof of insurance and a sketch of the work to be done. Very professional. Then we met Martin Sr. He is a true craftsman. The two-week estimate of time he gave us seemed to be reasonable, but when rain threatened, he and his crew finished it in seven days! The fence is beautiful, and their price was thousands of dollars less than two other estimates we got. Our neighbors love it and keep telling us so. Our electrician (75 Electric) referred us to Martin when we decided to start our concrete project. They replaced our asphalt driveway and concrete patio. We felt that we were given a fair price quote compared to other estimates we received. UPDATED: I had a CMU block wall put up to replace an existing wall that was on its way down. I basically had to do all the leg work with this company which I did not appreciate. I had to get my neighbors to sign off on an agreement along with getting it notarized and request that they move their plants away from the construction zone; something I feel the company should have done. There was a little fork in the road I was unaware of before the project could get underway. Martin Jr. was quick to email me a $250 change order to tack on to the final price of the wall--either that or give a $125 check to his father off book for time not used actually obtaining the permit? What? I had to go to the City Building and Safety Department myself and obtain the permit to start the work. Then to top it off, Martin Jr. told me since they were there working on my wall, they would put a walk gate up and told me I should buy a gate for them to put up. I thought hey, this is a great idea. However, I couldn't find a gate that fit the area so later on I requested that my existing gate be put back up which was sawed off by Martin's father and another man. The answer was a point-blank no. One would think you could at least put the gate back up you sawed off. Martin Jr. suggested I hire a "handyman" because that type of work wasn't included in our contract. Yes, he is correct. However, I'm not the one who suggested it and I feel that is bad business practice and does not earn repeat business.The wall came out ok considering it's about 1/2 inch taller at the top than it should be. This is a two man crew so the work will be slow. A 6 foot-32 inch CMU wall took about two weeks to install. Not entirely this business fault considering the inspections took time to happen. read more

I was not satisfied at all with the result because it was cheaply done and fast paced and the contractor that I was working with seemed like he didn't know what he was doing. Out of frustration I went on yelp and started a new search for a new contractor. I came across Pacificland Constructors and they immediately caught my attention because of all the photos they provided as well as excellent reviews. After explaining my situation to Martin who is the project manager he provided me with several solution options to remedy my failed patio. I ended up choosing Pacificland Constructors to fix my exterior patio because Martins estimate was the most detailed and it was priced fairly. I wish I had done more research when I first decided that I wanted to do this project on my home because it would've saved me time, money and several headaches dealing with the first contractor.
