The place for me to get sashimis. Johnny is the best! Come early or call them before you come if sashimi is what you're after. Depending on availability I always like to get the frozen udon here that's 8 half blocks in a pack. They are the right portion for me. They also carry a ton of groceries from Hawaii, Portuguese sausage, Zippy's chili, LauLau.... Such a cute store with all the goodies from East Asia as well. Def worth the trip if you're looking for ethnic food. They validate parking for up to 2 hours. Just need to drive in from the Larimer side. My favorite grocery store in the area. I love coming here to pick up frozen dumplings, candy/snacks, special sauces, raw fish.... They also have a refrigerator section with mochi, sesame balls with red bean and sushi. They also have a whole area with household items and some stationary, which is super cute! I love this place for a number of reasons. They carry a wide range of Asian products so it makes it convenient. For produce the truck comes in on Thursday, so shopping there on Friday, Sat or Sun are the best options. A little sparse when you get to Tuesday or Wednesday. They have a supermarket where you can buy fresh roe/masyado, shrimp, etc. It's not just Japanese goodies that you can find there; there's also items you need if you need to whip up any Asian recipe or craving you have. Ok ok ok!!!!! Why did I never come across this store in my annual visit to Denver? I was like a KID IN A CANDY STORE. This place is AMAAAAAAAAAAZING. While their store is on the smaller side as compared to the Japanese store I got to back home in Chicago, they have crammed in A LOT of variety in a store I think that is maybe 1/20 the size of the one in Chicago. And get this; crammed as in not messy. Super duper neat and tidy just like one would expect at a Japanese store. I don't know how the pricing compares to other Asian/Japanese stores in Denver but I will tell you one thing; nearly everything was between 20 and 35% cheaper than what I pay in Chicago. In fact, the variety they had in the osembe here was I think at least 2.5 times the variety I see in the Chicago store that is a monstrous place as compared to PMC. The folks working here too are super nice and kind. I had to kick myself for not finding this all these years. P M C is a most excellent purveyor of Japanese groceries and merchandise. They have a small but incredibly fresh produce section with some hard to find produce items. The people that work there are very friendly and go out of their way to help you navigate the store and help you find items if needed. So different from most Chinese markets where you can have difficulty finding anyone to help you... I was able to pick up some of my favorite Mishima Furikake seasonings, and some special brands of otsumami rice cracker snacks that I haven't eaten since my stash from my trip to Japan was depleted. Pacific Mercantile has an incredible selection of all different kinds of Asian goodies in a fairly small space right in the middle of downtown Denver. I had no trouble finding everything I was looking for (specific rice, nori, pickled radish, curry paste, noodles, etc.) to make Japanese, Thai, and Indian dishes. Very Very impressed with this market in downtown Denver. I as looking to do a sushi night at home and they had everything I needed to cook/prepare a full spread. Fresh fish, frozen fish, sushi grade tuna and salmon. The staff were so sweet they packed out bags with candies for dessert. Also the biggest instant ramen selection I have ever seen. I loved this little grocery SO MUCH while living in Denver. Some of my happiest memories were riding the scooter to this place with my partner to pick up goodies for dinner, lunch, or snacks. They have the freshest selection of sashimi and cut it from a slab of fish right in front of you. There are also so many other items like beef for gyudon or Japanese, Hawaiian, Asian snacks. My favorite part was that some of their veggies still come attached with roots so that we can just replant and grow more at home. I was able to regrow some cilantro right in our apartment. I came here when the Cherry Blossom Festival was on and it was really crowded but I liked the store so I wanted to come back another day to really check out what they had in stock. Don't go there. They sell snacks that aré expired even over a year. And I asked the cashier if they had non expired of that product since I wanted buy it. The casher said they only had those expired ones in the store. They know that they sell expired stuff!!! Their raw fish are smelly and not fresh. Today bought a bag of 15 lbs rice and big soy sauce bottles and some more. They took the shopping cart from me at the cashier, and made me carry all the stuff to the parking lot . Moving from SF to Denver was really easy in some ways and in others, a bit of a culture shock. In the opposite direction. Most grocery stores here sell the typical produce and wares that a middle-of-the US person would expect. And most restaurants serve American cuisine. Totally fine, as that's what I grew up eating. My husband grew up in Hawaii, lived in Las Vegas and San Francisco. He says that he "needs" one Asian meal a week, minimum. He likes to prepare Asian cuisine at home. That means we had to find a specialty store to meet his "needs". Luckily Pacific Mercantile is right smack dab downtown -- within walking distance of our apartment when we first moved. We take regular trips here probably once every 2-3 months with him at the helm of our adventure. What is usually purchased: Zippy's frozen chili, packaged ramen (from Japan), Hawaiian Sun cans, shrimp chips, a curry kit or two, Japanese pastries, mochi, kimchi, seaweed, spam and rice (for spam musubi), and the most important is Portuguese sausage. We have that on Sundays with rice and eggs for breakfast. Wandering the aisles is fun! There's usually something new on the shelves to take home and try. Plus there's the "usuals" that we always purchase. Clean, well organized and definitely full of hot commodities in a landlocked city. read more

i am a sucker for a green pea snack (wasabi or not) and make a stop here every time I have a opportunity. I usually park the car at the meter, pop in a quarter and do the in and out stuff. However, if you are 1st timer, may need few more quarters to browse the store. as many of you may know, bathroom is only for the customers! actually, I don't even know where it's located. i suspect next to the produce coolers. for some of you looking for dishes/utensils/gift items, head straight back, you should find stuffs made in japan .. tea serving sets, chop sticks, bowls and not to forget, the sake sets. if you are looking for the fresh meat/fish.. you just need to back trace your steps. if you need help at the meat counter but no one is around, ring that bell "hard". if you don't see anyone, ring some more. its always nice to see older people (over the retirement age) working. thank you owner for employing them. if you want freshly made lunch items (maki rolls, inari's, etc), they are near the cash register. can you guys put some tables/chairs at the front or just outside so we can enjoy the food? im just saying. this store has been here as far as I can remember.. at least for 35 years. before any of the asian/oriental markets existed. keep up the good work! read more
