They even give my dog a treat when we walk by! It's a small shop, and cramped inside, but that is central to its charm in my opinion, they're not trying to be anything they're not, and I've always received great information in response to the myriad questions I usually have when the time calls for a trip to the hardware store. Upon entering you feel the slippage of time, creaky wooden floors, lots of nooks and crannies with old-timey looking products everywhere. Windsor is part of a dying breed, those old school hardware stores that have been put out of business by the big box monsters. But Windsor is still there and going strong, and more importantly leading the way in customer service. I know my way around a workbench and have been known to twist a wrench or two, but every one of the employees I dealt with was a pro. They knew their sh*t and never once swore. During what I like to call my "sister's shelf adventure" I was given several options and possible solutions to the problem, once chosen my solution was perfectly cut by the same fellow that had helped all the way through. When I got it home, it fit perfectly, the end result, happy sister. All because a hardware store employee knew what he was talking about and was happy to help. Take that Home Depot, you too Lowe's and don't get me started on Canadian Tire. Don't pass up the chance to visit and support this wonderful old hardware and lumber store, it's got some amazing products (check out the live wood shelving or all the weird novelty type hardware stuff). All that combined with a smart, fun and funny staff makes it easy to go to this hardware store, even if it's for your sister.

They offered to send us a white framed door with a discount delivered by end of week. We emailed back saying that our doors wouldn't be matching and that we would want a pair of matching doors with white frames and that they could take back the silver framed door. No further emails or calls from Windsor...and no door. On Tuesday, Feb 13th, Windsor called saying they would have the silver frame door ready and delivered by yesterday (Saturday Feb 17th). We called on Friday to confirm the delivery time as we wanted to make sure we were around on Saturday. However Windsor still didn't have the door. So no door as of today... Still....

I was pleased too, you see, because our apartment lacks overhead light fixtures so it's the more lamps the better as far as I'm concerned. But we soon discovered that the lamp required a strange four-point bulb not easily available. We tried a couple of shops, drew diagrams of what we needed, etc. but each time failed to find the right bulb. Meandering on Broadway one day I stopped into Kits Lighting thinking this specialty lighting shop could solve my problems. I'd finally figured out that I needed a 55W 2D bulb and thought, since I knew the specific name of what I was looking for and wouldn't be drawing more pictures on napkins, I'd be picking one up here in no time. I walked into the store and after a long moment the clerk acknowledged me. I stated that I was looking for a 55W 2D light bulb and he proceeded to carelessly look on a shelf or two and then hold up sample products. None were the bulb I'd asked for. Finally he said he couldn't help me. "Can't you special order it?" I say. "No, try Home Hardware," he replies. Seriously? I went home and Googled the bulb: I can order it online for $16. Shopping local is great, but the big bad Internet wins this one.

The owner tested them in the store to make sure they worked and gave me a deal for two, but when we went home they didn't work - worse, my partner smashed one trying to get it back out of the track (lol not our day). I went back to the store, told him the story and he offered to come over to our place after he closed. The ones we had purchased hadn't worked as we had thought, but he also had brought another model and it worked!!! The best part - he gave us two free of charge/exchange even though we smashed one! Exceptional service and he's retiring in a year, so hurry down ;-)

We tend not to buy very "high end", but we seem to receive the same service as those who do. Today there was a "glitch" with the price of our purchase - first I saw that it was on sale in the computer, then not. But Leroy asked management to honour the lower price and they did. So far we have not had an issue with after sales service, as apparently some people have. We don't expect that there will be, going forward.

They upsell you on warranty and tell you a bunch of things are covered under the warranty. By the time you need the warranty for those things and you call them to talk about it, they tell you that your specific issue is not covered. Both my wife and I remember the conversation vividly and we were told "No, I would never have said that issue is covered".
