I went to Dunbar Lumbar Arbutus this afternoon with regards to getting some shelf materials for my closet. I brought a previously purchased shelf support brace and mentioned my actual shelf would be larger in depth than this. The gentleman reassured me I could this use this existing support brace and gave me a map to their warehouse to have some custom shelves cut. When I went to the warehouse in Oak Bridge, a second gentleman helped me cut to measure some shelving pieces and only charged me for the actual wood panel. I am very thankful for their excellent service and wanted to share this experience with others wishing to purchase supplies at Dunbar Lumbar. I recently called 7 lumber yards to get a quote on some material I needed for a project. Dunbar was 30% lower than the next lowest quote. I placed my order using the phone and internet and it was delivered the next day. When it was discovered that there was a mistake made, they immediately offered to rectify it. The new pieces were delivered within the hour at no extra charged. As this was a fairly small order their profit was probably taken up by this. They fixed it with a smile. Will I deal with them again? Duh. Next time I probably won't even bother calling around for other quotes. To me, this is a company that knows how to do business and establish customer loyalty. The key cutting service is handy and efficient--it's always good to know a local spot that does a good job. I had no problems with the keys cut here and the sales guy said they accept returns on mal-cut keys. There is a strong selection of hardware here, such as hooks and drawer pulls, plus all the nails, screws, and tools you'd expect. The store is split into two levels with the downstairs offering the items I've previously mentioned and the upstairs displaying some rather fancy (and expensive) power tools. 1) Popcorn...Kids (of all ages apparently) love it. Keeps them busy while we do the shopping. 2) Just on the verge (forever it seems like) of finishing renovations. Staff is very helpful and knowledgeable. 3) For your reno basics (and DYI jobs), a great place for materials. 4) As someone pointed out, they do cuts for you if you don't have the capability to handle large pieces of lumber. Needless to say, much cheaper than going out to buy a large table saw for a only few cuts. Just remember to get all the dimensions before going to pick-up the lumber. read more

Best part is the staff?? Not. Went to get shelves. No one knew anything. Where are the shelves - go up there. Will these screw fit these brackets? not sure. When we took the pay slip to the yard to get the shelves loaded - the yard man loaded the shelves into the trunk - then said you should have a bungie cord - AND WALKED AWAY. After spending $100 on shelves I don't think I could have got worse service at a box store. read more

The best part is the customer service. I am always excited when there is great customer service to help you with what you need or if you need to return something. They have a pretty good selection of what you need, one thing I would avoid is the Hole Saws if you need one. My coworker and I bought one each, and he barely got through his 4th hole with it. Both floors of this place are stacked from floor to ceiling with merchandise and they have always had even the most obscure item that I have looked for. Heard the wonderful ads for this company on ROCK 101 about how they will help you make the right decisions for your project. So we drove in from Richmond to buy the materials and get some advice on building a walkway and deck. They were not helpful, treated us like morons because we were asking them for advice about our project. We will never cross the threshold of their store ever again. I will stick with the people that want our business, like Home Depot, Lowes and the smaller independent hardware stores in Richmond and Ladner. Too bad for Dunbar, we are only getting started on doing many projects around our home. I normally prefer to support the smaller local companies and not the big box stores, but if they can't be bothered to treat us with respect and courtesy, it is their loss. i would never recommend this store to any one for anything. It makes me wonder how they have stayed in business this long. They must cater to professionals and don't want to waste their time with the average person. read more
