I complained to the manager and didn't put put a poor view on the Yelp as I feel everyone should be given a chance. I've spent thousands at Steveston because I believe in supporting local businesses but no more. Too many times I've had disinterested, rude and terrible customer service - the staff act like I'm bothering them by asking them questions. I recently asked if they had something and the guy said he didn't know and when I asked if he could check he got irritated and said they would probably need to order it, which he clearly wasn't interested in doing. One of the younger staff members was very rude totally disinterested in helping answering even the simplest questions. Went in to see what they had for vhf radios I was really interested to purchase the Icon DX 2200 they had it on sale as displayed with a tag in-fact there were two tags one for the sale price for the unit and the second to ask for boat show pricing! They refused to sell it at the floor advertised price of $429... wanted to sell it to me for $479 I said no I won't pay that price since the tag states a lower price! They called the owner of the store he didn't want to deal with it and told the salesman to call the manager He said too he would not sell as the advertised price but offered $20 off Their service has gone down the tubes such crappy service... I have been to Steveston Marine for over 25 years, today has to be the best service I have received in this store or anywhere else for a long time, There is a new salesman there, this is the third time I have dealt with him in the Vancouver location. I believe his name Is Greg, he is knowledgeable and resourceful, he has the pulse of the store and works hard to ensure your needs are met. He follow through with orders, large or small and knows how to get the job done. He never takes the credit of his work and always says they are a team. Unfortunately this really is a very poor chandlery. Their stock is clearly being wound down with damaged and ancient items on the shelves if you are lucky to find anything of use. The service is just terrible at the Richmond store. The mid-week staff are especially poor. Their prices are, well astronomical. Don't get me going about their terrible website that seems to be connected to the internet by a 1990's 9600 baud modem. An ever present micromanaging nebbish of an owner who drives a Mercedes. This should set the tone for everything that follows, as the store is more effective as a panopticon than a marine chandlery. Perhaps the biggest giveaway is that the clothing section is roped-off, the ropework garnished with a crudely written directive to "Ask for Assistance" before one can behold the wonders of the Helly Hanson seaboot aisle. The store is a hodgepodge, and looks like it was all hastily clobbered together after emptying out the contents from the back of a truck that came from a bring-and-buy sale. If you're looking for a specific item, you could have your work cut out for you: it's a jumbled-up joke, and the staff have a disinclination to do anything but avoid customers. I shop exclusively at Wolff Marine in Richmond now, as I usually feel a need to bathe myself in lye after a visit to Steveston Marine in Vancouver. read more

Only a block away from West Marine, it's easy to support local by shopping at Steveston because anything you can't find here you'll probably get down the street. But that most likely won't be necessary because Steveston has a great selection of high quality boating goods at decent prices. I got a pair of $200 deck shoes here for $80 (they'd stocked up on white Sperrys for RVYC sailpast, but turns out these particular shoes weren't white enough for yacht club rules, so they were getting a ton of returns). Haha sweet deal for me though! I got a wicked walking stick with hidden compass and shot glass inside here that I'd never seen before. My ole man swoons for quirky gadgetry. One dislike: the staff person helping said she couldn't comment on the usefulness of most of the items I was considering because she isn't actually a boater herself, much less a sailor. Not so workable to have staff at a boating store be clueless about boating, but hey, she was nice and attentive so no hard feelings. I always check Steveston first when looking for sailing gear. No call backs, no inventory for advertised products for sale, after I had paid they told me they didn't have the part. They then told me they would figure something else out for me. I called back 3-4 times and no one knew about my previous calls and they all kept trying to get me to pay for the original item again a second time even though they didn't have inventory on the first one. I don't know where to start.... I wanted a product that they said they could ship in from their langley store. They asked for my phone number and said they would call me later when it arrived. No call.. The next day as I patiently awaited my call and put off the much needed repairs to my boat. That night at 17:15 I called and talked to their reception ( who has no clue... in general!) I told her I was awaiting their call all day and I had some major need of this product. She said " oh... our driver has just arrived ( 15 minutes before closing??) So I asked " do you usually get your products in the morning or at night?" She thought about it for a few seconds and said " we get them at night". Then she asked for my name and number and told me someone would call me back either in a bit or tomorrow morning. I said " well it's probably not going to be tonight as you close in 15 minutes... yes?" She agreed and laughed. So I Call this morning... and the lady says everyone is busy and manager is in a meeting.. but what is my name and number? I tell her and she says my name and then a number that is close to mine. I say no and tell her my number again. Then after a pause she says Ok whats your name and number? At about this time I just went outside and set fire to my boat...... On a whim, I started reading these reviews. Most are spot on and written with way more eloquence than I can muster. I own a new boat, a 2021, which replaced my new 2018, and have been in boats for most of many decades. I'm kinda spendy, when it comes to boats. I recall shopping in Steveston at Steveston Marine. Back then, It was an adventure, and fun. Today, Steveston Marine epitomizes all that is wrong with retail, and in person shopping, and why Amazon is thriving. Clearly the owners of Steveston Marine are morons. Disgruntled, dismotivated, incompetant staff. Identical items sitting side by side on the shelves, priced differently. Most hardware is not priced. I once bought rail hardware there in Kits, and it took the clerk 5 minutes, to hand write a paper invoice for $30, right out of 1974. I felt huge empathy for the man, clearly at the end of his career options in life, I felt real sadness for the clerk that day. The staff clearly all hate coming to work, and that's the owner's fault. I have now taken to sourcing marine items from Ebay, Craigslist, Amazon, Canadian Tire. As an avid boater, unafraid to spend money on my boating disfunction-shopping at a Marine supply store should be eagerly anticipated. As an on and off again entrepreneur I can see an on-line marine supply store killing it right now. Margins are huge, demand is epic, competition non-existent or floundering. Steveston Marine would be a fun road trip for a college business class, and a wonderful,case study in how to do everything, literally, wrong. This place is a Horror Story with all the Classics-dirty confusing store layout, sullen dimwitted staff, mendacious managers, the cheapest goods imaginable marked up beyond belief and absolute misery for a return policy. There are dozens of better run retail operations selling similar goods in Greater Vancouver and this sad sack excuse for a retailer has only themselves to blame for their empty store-even @ the height of the boating season their parking stalls are barren and their store is akin to a funeral home. The fishing department in particular seems to be run by someone who's never actually been in a boat-the junk on sale is below entry level-just the crappiest of everything for even more money than the big operations-who at least carry popular brands. Abandon Hope if you need frozen bait-the stuff Steveston is flogging is such poor quality I don't think a Seal would eat it. read more

I'm a big fan of spending my dollars at local businesses and avoid West Marine where possible. But Steveston Marine is so frustratingly useless that if your time is worth anything, it creates more hassle than it's worth. Besides, Steveston has a US store so I'm not convinced that they are Canadian (given their mediocrity, I gave them the benefit of the doubt). Aside from the insufficiently few knowledgeable staff that can provide some assistance, the online experience is shocking and their product quality is poor. This place needs new ownership/management that will overhaul the layout of the store (it's a chandler, we're not talking the highest standards here!), revamp the website so that customers can shop and browse online, and invest in staff that will be proud and loyal employees. If they market themselves as the Canadian (viable) alternative to West Marine, they should have no problems stealing market share. read more

I bought several Scotty rod holder mounts, tackle, and wood finishing products and came back with the unused, unopened rod holders the next day and one of the a**hole "managers" argued with me that the skus on the receipt don't match the products I am returning. The descriptions of the products were the same and I told him their inventory management problems are not my problem and he dismissed me and walked away. The cashier could see that the items were the ones on the receipt and convinced him. He grudgingly agreed to the refund. It's not the first time they been rude and tried to screw me on a return but it's the last time I shop there. read more

This is, without a doubt, the worst marine store in Vancouver. Steveston marine is disorganized, with inconsistent pricing, and terrible customer service. Each time I visit this store it is out of the utmost necessity only, and I never look forward to the experience. When searching for parts, the staff have no idea what you're talking about; they are also often rude or dismissive. I have seen used or damaged parts repackaged as new, sometimes with critical pieces missing. If they don't have something in stock, forget ordering from them. I once waited 3 months for a part, having been told every few weeks that it was "on its way". Eventually I got my money back and ordered from another store. Another time they tried to sell me 10' of hose, but claimed it was 12' and so were prepared to over charge me until I insisted on re-measuring. Avoid this place at all costs. read more

The merchandising, if one can call it that, is a joke, signage and pricing horrible, and when looking for service, you can be lucky to find someone who cares to even help you. The owner, who sits behind his computer like the Wizard of Oz, takes eons to figure out what he has in stock, has no clue, as the items he finds in stock have disappeared into the abyss of disorganization that permeates the store. To say "not worth shopping in" overstates the obvious. Unfortunately, West Marine, the other store in the area closed. But you can search, buy, and have something delivered online before they can even look something up on their computer. Don't bother with them. read more

I feel a sense of abject empathy for Dave and perhaps one or two others at either of there stores I frequent because of the work environment they've found themselves in. After reading the numerous reviews I don't feel as though it is "just" me any longer who feels the strange looks, inquisitive glances and a general sense of unwelcoming. As a person of colour I would think an establishment would give a nod to acceptance and inclusion, but instead I feel as though I can no longer shop somewhere that doesn't cherish the sizeable amount of money I've spent at there stores over the past few years. To be honest I've felt like waiting for the owners son after he got off work and give him a reminder of how inclusion has helped them remain successful despite there horrible customer service. Purchased a Walker Bay inflatable from Steveston Marine. When I got it home and unpacked, I found 2 different length oars. Contacted the store numerous times (always told I needed to talk to a person who wasn't there at the moment) Finally talked to "Salim" the owner, who asked for copy of bill of sale my address etc. all of witch I provided. Then promised to send me new oars...he never did. I am very happy with the Walker Bay inflatable, but I think they need to find a new dealer for there product. read more

So ever since this place has changed ownership it has gone down hill fast.. zero service. Its like you are putting these guys out..no help. I was looking for a toilet part..this isna standard toilet found on many boats..almost all older boats. Guys walking around me avoiding eye contact then finally employee asks menif I wanted help. I took a picture of what I needed to replace..he told me he had no idea what this was..he directed me to another guy who said he didnt know what it was..he directed me to an guy who was the electronic fellow so he had really no idea..no help..I walked out..not the first time I've had trouble getting help or being treated like I'm an idiot..I tile my neighbour at the marina..just by chance he told me he was in there last week and got into a verbal fight with the guy over a toilet part..go figure...he demanded the guy call the distributor directly and they do have the part he needed..he said he will ot go back so I'm am the same having been a yacht owner for over 40 years and driving from the northshore to their location in Vancouver I now have had enough of being treated so badly..its a shame it was a great place..I'm sure they have been riding the shirt tails of the previous owner who really went out of his way to help..all the emplyees did..that's why I would drive all the way over there..they must be slowing down on sakss8..have to be. I'm never going back..that's just how I am..nothing will bring me back..I suggqstnyou save yourself from being mistreated and frustrated and go to another marine outlet..Martin marine is a good place to go..juat a little pricier but I dont care now I will pay the extra to have someone who likes their job help me. read more
