Among the designer espresso makers are some pretty fashionable clothing items, which, for me, broke up the monotony of the selection of housewares (lamps, vases, tables, cushions, etc.). Someone must have had people like me in mind when they came up with the concept for this store. On to the fashion! I found some beautiful (although pretty high-end) tees by designer James Perse as well as some local style, like Vancouver's own Shereen De Rousseau's gorgeous cross-platform jewellery.

This is perhaps the most jumbled and frenzied of all the Kitchen Corners I've visited (those being…read morethe other location on 4th, and two on Commercial). It also has the biggest kitsch factor. Most recently I found my favorite discovery yet: Styrofoam heads. But I've also bought a tray, plant soil, fabric dye, a random vase and a cutting board here. The glue in the latter unstuck after a year, yet the damage is mendable. The staff is always helpful and candle selection here is fragrant and varied. In addition to the street level madness (and the sidewalk boxes), there is also a basement level filled with plant pots and soil. Kitchen Corner was the only spot I could find soil in February in order to re-pot one of my ailing houseplants. The prices aren't really bargains, but the selection is quirky and gives that garage-sale feel without that coating of yard-sale crud.

Getting there is part of the fun: you can take a quick water taxi across False Creek, drive, or grab a regular taxi. We got there later in the evening on a Sunday, so they closed early and time was limited. Before I even stepped inside, I spotted a vendor making maple candy--the kind that is poured onto ice and rolled up o to a stick. Highly recommend giving this very Canadian treat a try! Inside, it's exactly what you hope for: a lively space packed with vendors--produce, baked goods, prepared foods, local specialties. I had a short must-try list, starting with Lee's Donuts, Siegel's Bagels, and a hunt for Nanaimo bars, the iconic no-bake Canadian dessert named after the city of Nanaimo in British Columbia. Even with little time, it was fun weaving through the stalls and admiring all the products. Since we were visiting during the holidays, there were extra vendors selling arts, crafts, and locally made sweets, which made the whole place feel even more festive. We picked up bottles of maple syrup to bring home as gifts and also tried a few canelés. After we enjoyed our dinner, I stepped outside and took a moment to soak in the view--city lights reflecting on the water, the bridge glowing in the distance, everything calm and picturesque. It was a quiet contrast to the busy market inside and ended the visit on a really peaceful note. Definitely take in the view if you have a minute! Through this experience though, I learned that it would have been a good idea for me to ask them not to cover the couch with fabric until closer to the final payment. I realized that the original colour chosen would not work as well as I originally thought. I asked if I could change it and pay for the added cost. They were a firm no. So now I have a couch that I paid a lot of money for and it is alright in the space but not great. The quality is very good and I am happy with that. I wasn't happy that the sales staff did not inform me of added costs at the time of purchase such as delivery and unpacking the item. So, that wasn't appreciated. However, the delivery guys were AMAZING! "David the Great" and "Guy the Beautiful" who does charming poses were so helpful, funny, friendly and went the extra mile. They provided great customer service and redeemed my experience with this retailer. After all this, I'm not sure that I will buy from Brier's again. I feel somewhat disappointed with the couch and wish I had waited on choosing the fabric, though I'm not sure if that would've been an option.
