I bought a baby Venus Flytrap here recently to fight bugs organically in my home. They were really healthy and happy. The front girl gave tips about how to take care of my flytrap and make sure to feed it once a month. Reasonably priced. They had really nice succulents and outdoor plants. They had a shortage of small plates. I'll come back again another time. Helpful staff. read more

Not a huge nursery, but conveniently located and has super friendly service, including some sort of loyalty program for returns. Kind of a jack of all trades situation rather than a master of one in terms of what they have here. It's a little bit of everything from equipment, soild, plants, etc. What stood out for me is that they have some rare plants like vanilla orchids and jewel orchids that I have not seen elsewhere. They also sell a very small selection of grow light equipment. What they seem to specialize in, if anything are the orchids as they sell all kinds of growing mediums for them from clay balls to different barks. There is quite a good selection of seeds for flowers, veggies and cover crops. The prices are decent. The parking lot is small, but does the job, especially on Broadway where free parking is non-existent. read more

One of my favourite garden centre in this part of town. The people are really sweet. Bob, the manager is always pleasant and kind. He somehow always managed to find me exactly what I want. My plants from Hunters have been thriving. I went back for more plants during Covid and this time for vegetables. Saw Bob there again and asked him to recommend easy to plant veggies. He picked carrots, bok choy, various types of lettuces and spinach for me. He was right, it was so easy and I have been harvesting my veggies quite often. Those lettuces grow fast. Loves the amazing service from the rest of the staff too and their assortment here is incredible. There are free parking in the same lot as White Spot but on the garden centre side. It is my happy place and I can't wait to be there to find new plants soon. read more

I have never really noticed this plant store behind White Spot before. It's quite a small store compared to most places. Why I like it ? 1) Convenient location in Vancouver with lots of free parking !! 2) It's my first time "attempting" gardening and the staff were so friendly answering all my questions 3) No one tried to sell me lots of supplies I don't need 4) I like the collection of outdoor plants 5) Reasonable prices The only part I would improve on would be to add a lot more indoor plants to the collection. read more

David Hunter is simply begging for competition! The new store next to White Spot is just as badly organized as its predecessor with plants placed at the convenience of staff, not customers, making it unnecessarily challenging to walk through the store with a grudgingly provided shopping basket. For the longest time at its previous location, no shopping baskets were provided and staff would cast a cool eye on anyone with the crust to clear one of the plastic plant holders under a display. Remember that? Still the same rude service in which an irritable cashier once raised her head above a long line-up of sweltering customers to ask whether anyone paying with cash would care to jump the queue. Still other cashiers are as likely as not to engage a pal customer in lengthy conversation despite a long line-up. There is STILL no delivery service nor any offer ever of help carrying heavy bags of soil , fertilizer or awkward plants to car. There are no benefits to frequent purchasers and never a deal of any kind. Sales staff lack even basic expertise in local trees and are unable to recommend experts who do possess such knowledge. They appear to have no affiliation with local gardening services with whom most of local stratas and co-ops contract. Plant prices are competitive, I suppose, but it's such an unpleasant shopping experience generally that it's worth a few cents more to drive to the UBC plant store or to the Natural Gardener on W. 10th Ave., both of which seem to increase selection each year of operation. Sherwood Mayhew on the corner of Broadway and Alma also has a good selection of plants at very competitive prices as well as a team of very pleasant sales personnel. read more

I'm so glad they're back on Broadway. It's kind of a desert out here in terms of garden centres and the drive out to their plant wonderland in Surrey is a bit of a pill, even for a gardening nerd like me. Ever since they opened this Spring, their collection of plants has been growing. Usual and more unusual seedlings, flowers, bushes, and trees are for sale. And, they're mostly from healthy stock. Sickly, leggy, and root-bound stuff is for...other places. Their stock of garden accessories, soil amenders, etc. is also larger every time I go back and they'll take down your requests for anything they don't have at this location because most likely they'll have it at their larger Surrey store. Staff are friendly, but knowledge varies. A few know even less than me (Quit pinching off the suckers from my DETERMINATE tomato plant, woman!), but many are walking encyclopedias and great about sharing what they know. Prices are garden centre costs, but Wednesdays are 10% off of everything. read more

The graffiti-covered abandoned KFC became David Hunter - yay! I was never a terribly frequent visitor of David Hunter when it was located up the street at Maple. I used it like a 7-11, I would go in and grab the one item I was too lazy to go pick up at the big nursery out in the 'burbs. It isn't that their plant quality isn't good, because it is, but it is geared towards the run-of-the-mill "Proven Winners" kind of plants and I like the more unusual varieties and cultivars. They manage to cram a whole lot of plants and gardening accessories into a former fast food establishment! For city dwellers who need access to a decent garden center within the city boundaries, this is a solid option and I am glad to see them back. read more

Very average experience for me. Nicely laid-out place, great variety to choose from. I've only been there three times and all three times were in the same week. Took me a few visits to figure out what I really wanted. When I first went, it was quite busy. I felt totally invisible. Nobody greeted me or bothered to ask if I needed any help. I came and went and am quite sure that I was never noticed. Probably could've stuffed a few plants in my pocket and nobody would even see - not that I would but you get my drift! Still, I figured "hey, they're busy, it's understandable". Second time in, not busy at all. Quite dead, actually, but again, no greeting, nobody offering up help. Again, felt pretty invisible. Third and last visit. Finally bought what I needed. Same experience going in and while shopping but the woman who handled the transaction was actually very friendly so it ended on a good note. I would go back because of the products but to me the place seemed to have very little personality and of course personality in a business comes from the people who work in it. I had never noticed this store. The neutral exterior colour sort of makes it just blend in with everything. I drive along that stretch all the time but only came to know about Hunter because I Googled "garden centres in Kits" or something like that. If they painted the outside a stronger colour with some pop, I think they'd get way more business. Maybe they don't need it but it's kind of invisible as it is now. Hmmm.... sort of like I felt when I went in all three times. Update: January 7, 2017 I just happened to notice some other reviewer's comments about my experience at this store. Hey guys, I wasn't and don't ever expect to be "pampered" unless you consider a statement like "hello" or questions like "can I help with you with anything" falling under the category of pampering. Hey, if your experiences here have been great, that's fantastic. I'm happy for you. I'm not taking away from that at all, but then please allow me to express what my genuine experience was. I'm entitled and unfortunately my reality was far different from yours. Maybe they were having an off week? I don't know but that's what I encountered when I went in. I also was surprised by the negative review about David Hunter Garden Centre. Kinda sounded like they were more interested in promoting other businesses due to this its not really a review I would take into consideration. I have only had great experiences here, they always offer to help me out with loading my car or carrying out plants, they give me great gardening advice when I bring in pictures or clippings without making a purchase. All around I find this place to be professional and more then willing to help. They also do amazing huge special order hanging baskets and I mean HUGE I recommend looking into them but they also sell really nice on the shelf baskets too, I bought 5 they were so nice I could of bought 10! read more

Amazing store- a must go to if you are looking to spruce up your garden or try your hand at growing some plants. Neatly arranged shelves. Tidy storefront with gorgeous plant displays out front. Excellent prices. Wide selection of seeds, bulbs, succulents, and outdoor shrubs/trees. Very very healthy plants and really good prices too. The staff were super friendly and helpful as well as patient with my endless questions (I'm a novice gardener). I am definitely going back soon to grab some shrubs for my garden! I went into the David Hunter store on Broadway today and was completely ignored by staff. Not even a, "Hi, I'll be with you in a minute!" Acted like I didn't exist. Fine, there were a couple of customers ahead of me, so I wandered around and found the potting soil I was after, and carried two bags up to the till to ask for advice which is best for the plants I have. One of the two clerks actually had gone back to doing paperwork rather than assist me! I had to interrupt her to ask a question! BC isn't renowned for good customer service, but if my name were David Hunter and it were on the sign out front, I'd be upset about this. I'd wonder if some of my staff care enough about their jobs to bother showing up for a performance review. Needless to say, if I know I'm going to get grocery-store quality service when buying potting soil...I'm not going to bother going to a speciality gardening store. read more

This is a well organized store. I am in huge favour of mom and pop shops. Lots of fresh flowers and seed options. It inspires me to want to start gardening, however, I was just here to pick up some 4 inch pots to make some crafts and to house some home grown flowers as a house warming gift. Great customer service and prices were more than fair. I was actually recommended this place by someone at my local Canadian Tire who comes here all the time for her gardening needs. This garden shop has everything! My favourite part about shopping here is the expertise and support. Rebecca is extremely knowledgeable and patient. She has given me so much guidance! My garden is thriving because of the support I get from her and her team. I appreciate that if someone doesn't know something, they will try to find the answer. The comments about the rude staff are bizarre. I have been shopping here throughout the year since they first opened and I have never had a bad experience. Sometimes they are extremely busy, but they always do the best that they can. Everyone is always asking tons of questions and they do everything they can to attend to each person. *Also - the prices are competitive and there is free parking. I'm surprised to hear a negative review from one person. I have always found them super helpful, and friendly, with a good selection prices. Also they have discounts on Wednesdays for seniors and 10 per cent off if you belong to Van Dusen. It is great to see a family run business thrive..and though they may not specialize in unusual plants there are others like the Natural Gardner on 10th that do, but Hunters are great for your a good assortment of everyday plants of all types, annuals and perennials, as well as supplies such as sea soil and potting soil, nice pots, etc you constantly need! So give them a try! Plus parking is easy and it is so central in Kiitsilano! read more
