I was interested in buying a tool and called but no answer. Since I was in a hurry I emailed them. Didnt receive a reply in 2 days so I called again and someone answered this time. The person told me they have it and it is $60 and it comes in a holster. On my way there, I received an email saying it was $63. I think they were confused about the pricing because when I got there it was indeed $60. The person helping me didn't seem to be familiar with the tool. There was one on display and they werent sure if there were more. Also, it was not a holster but just a shealth. I asked if came in a box because the smaller version does. They said they didnt think so and they didnt know why the small one has a box. I purchased it anyways because I needed it that day for a gift. If it did have a box then I really missed out. read more

All in all this is a beautiful nursery but when it comes to friendly service, I have not experienced it and am astounded to read about the treatment that some people have experienced. I believe that the prices here are high and cater to a wealthier group of people and agree that one can find better prices along Marine Drive, etc. *** Update...I have been trying to contact Southlands for two days now to ask if they have a specific plant which I know I am having difficulty finding and they do not pick up their phone and have an anonymous generic answering voice who then tells you that you can't a message as their inbox is full!!! Wow, I finally visited this beautiful expansive nursery today with my neighbour's recommendation. Vast selection of very unique plants and a great collection of tastefully curated planters. I received amazing service particularly from Jessie who took the time to answer all my questions and helped me with additional tips to care for my new plants. Grateful for Gordon who helped with trimming my plastic pot to fit the new ceramic planters and carried my new plants to my car. I had a great time here today and look forward to be back soon. read more

In shock after being chewed out by a pissy staff member for leaving my cart loaded with flowers by the till, exactly where the ladies working there told me to leave it. My son and I had left the front of the line to get a price for a yew we wanted to buy. In the meantime, an elderly couple had gone ahead, so we were waiting for our turn to pay (we were next). When Mr Pissy told another staff member to move our cart (which was pulled to the side, and not blocking traffic), I explained those were our flowers, and we were just waiting to pay, he muttered that everyone was in such a hurry. It didn't stop there, he continued to make negative comments - "do you not like what I'm saying, blah, blah, blah". When I said I didn't appreciate being spoken to like that as a paying customer he said, "Get out of here Karen, we don't want your money anyway." Wow. When I think of all the money I have spent here over the years, I regret ever setting foot in this place. Never have I been spoken to like that. I'm never coming back, that's for sure! If you shop here, watch out for a grumpy old guy, and stay out of his way. Or better yet, don't even go there. They don't treat customers with basic respect, and certainly don't appreciate them. Hilarious, if you look through the other reviews, it seems many others have had run ins with this same obnoxious guy, maybe it's time to hang up the shears? read more

Enjoyed the big selection of this place and easy parking. Carries a ton of tropical plants...great variety of houseplants of all sizes, probably the biggest range of fern varieties I've seen anywhere. Bought some cute marimo moss balls here that I have not seen elsewhere. They also have soil, manure seeds, decor. There is a cute vibe with a vintage country type feel. Service can be a bit awkward. Biggest downside is the price, I bought some spaghum here then saw it for $3 less at another garden centre. Similarly, succulents were on the expensive side. Go here for unique plants but elsewhere for growing medium and the common varieties. read more

They NEVER answer the phone! It happened to me multiple times that I was looking for something and made the trip for nothing after trying to call multiple times, because they don't bother to answer. Their voicemail is generic saying the "person" is unavailable rather having a proper voicemail that fits a business. I find it to be unprofessional. read more

Extremely expensive and caters to the more influenate Vancouverites. Take a short drive to the Burnaby marine drive nurseries to save $$$. The have the same variety of plants. In comparison, a larch tree in Surrey nuseries would cost $150 less compared to Southlands. read more

stopped by here when i was in the area about a month ago and a half ago. it was super busy, but the person who helped me out was very knowledgeable and helped put all the soil in my car too. the basil and thyme i planted is already growing so well. overall great customer service and selection :) read more

For those of you who are actually emotionally invested in your gardens - if you haven't yet been to Southlands, you probably should. Hands down, the best nursery in Vancouver. Maybe the world. The nursery thrives in what can only be described as Vancouver's oddest neighbourhood, Southlands, an urban patch of land filled with horse ranches, polo clubs, and golf courses on the Southernost edge of the city that borders on the Fraser river. It's trippy, in a good way. Southlands' variety of plants - seasonals, tropicals, succulents, trees, shrubs, etc. - is mind-boggling. Wandering the main store is a treat for the senses. The expected houseplants (spider plants, crotons, ivies, etc.) can be found scattered among an incredible range of colourful vegetation the likes of which you will not find at Home Depot or Rona. Furthermore, the plants just seem bigger, cheerier, happier. I have been told that unlike some outlets that sell plants Southlands makes a point of not over-fertilizing plants but caring for them with love and time instead, yielding a creature that is more likely to thrive (as opposed to something that's strung out on fertilizer just to look pretty and make you buy it) rather than wither and wilt when you take it home (plant detox). Bottom line: they're healthy and reliable. They are also more expensive. But only marginally, if at all. While the rapture didn't destroy the planet, it did destroy my lovely balcony flower box - damnable aphids. My beautiful pansies and violas, purchased about a month ago from Southlands, had been absolutely charming until the bloody aphids. After cleaning house with a good chrysanthemum-based insecticide, I had reason to go back there today for more. Late May and their selection was impeccable - osteospermums (gorgeous, huge, fantastic colour selection $3.99), New Guinea impatiens, nemesia, superbena have now taken hold in my little box. Truly, I had to restrain myself. The staff is highly educated about plants and are keen to offer advice. On the weekends they have members from local horticultural groups on-hand to offer very specific knowledge about, say, vegetable gardening. In addition to plants they do sell accoutrements - soils, plant holders, seeds, tools, bags of ladybugs (!), etc. Bottom line is that for both the hardcore gardener (that actually has, say, a proper garden), the wannabe apartment-dweller (like yours truly, who just likes to have pretty colours on their balcony in the summer), or someone looking to brighten another's day with a new plant-pal, a trip to Southlands Nursery is guaranteed to please. read more

Loved it here! I had been looking for some soil to re-pot some herbs and this was one of the closest nurseries to me, so I decided to drop by. The nursery is fairly large--they have an outdoor section which contains larger bush plants and trees as well as a greenhouse containing some special variety plants such as banana trees. On the other side of the parking lot they have an indoor facility housing tropical plants, pots, and soil. The indoor area is surrounded by an outdoor selection of herbs, succulents, perennials, and hydrophilic plants (lillies, elephant ears, taro). The indoor area also had all kinds of neat trinkets (lots of old pots sourced and shipped from France). If you have any interest in purchasing a plant I would definitely recommend visiting! They have a wide variety and the quality is great. Everyone who helped me was very friendly and I'll definitely be back when I need more supplies! read more

Twas a sunny Sunday and I decided to take my mom out to the nursery for the afternoon. I also had a couple of Groupon offers to use for the both of us and it was off to the greenhouses! Nestled in the swanky neighbourhood of SW Marine Drive and Balaclava St., this place offers the standard plants that one would find at most nurseries and then some imported exotics that are pretty rare in our neck of the woods. You can also find water plants, larger trees (Japanese maples), vegetable plants and pottery. I ended up buying about 4 annuals, some smaller plants for a rock garden and a couple of perennials to form the base of a planter box. My purchases via the Groupon went smoothly and the workers were quite informative and helpful. Most of all, my mom and I had a wonderful afternoon together. read more

This place is the Ritz of garden centres. Featured by Martha Stewart as THE garden shop to visit when in Vancouver, the prices certainly reflect that. But don't let that discourage you. The area is beautiful, very close to Kerrisdale and once you're inside there are some plants you'll be sure to find at a fair price. The last time I was there I bought a unique succulent I had never seen before and it was only 4 dollars. A couple months later it's doing amazingly. Their tropical greenhouse is wonderfully detailed with rustic charm. Really like the air plants and arrangements. Great succulents too in a few sections of their setup as well. Great to visit when you check out KJM Country Gardens down the street. read more

Okay okay so you've noticed that this is my first review that isn't related to food. I'm obsessed, get over it. Oh, by the way, Southlands offers free coffee. I first visited Southlands 2 years ago when I started gardening. They have a huge selection of decorative plants which I haven't looked at too closely because I use my garden for food, but they sell trees, tropical plants large and small, succulents and other decorative plants. They also sell seeds from a few different companies including West Coast Seeds who provide resources on organic home gardening. This place also sells bars of soap, soil, and some mulching items like small stones. I was there yesterday to buy a tomato plant, a parsley plant and some carrot seeds. I found all but the tomato which they said they would have once the weather warmed up. The visit before this one I picked up a succulent and they let me take a small handful of moss for free to nestle my plant in. The staff aren't generally around the garden to help out but they are approachable enough when you do find one (usually standing around at one of 2 desks unpacking something) and I have not had a bad experience. Prices are high but they do have a points reward system if you spend enough. 1 point per 1 dollar before tax. 750 points = $50. read more

A gorgeous nursery. Very upclass and well decorated with a plethora of plants (indoor and outdoor) to choose from. Plants seem mostly healthy except some air plants and display plants. Biggest downside - expensive! Makes sense though since this nursery is located in the heart of the West side. Also, it is really hard to access via public transit. Staff did not even acknowledge me or my daughter at all during my half hour visit. I was very disappointed by the poor service skills. Worth checking out because it is a visually pleasing store. But I don't think I'll be going back there anytime soon. read more

My experience wasn't bad per say, but I am a little sad that I spent a lot of money here. For my birthday we came to buy a ficus. I love Fiddle Leaf Figs and we purchased one about 4 feet tall. Along with other plants. The fiddle leaf was covered in thick dust but I knew I could just wash the leaves when I got home. Once home I let the plant settle as I know they are finicky. It took a bit to get the water just right and of course it had the usual leaf drop as they do when adjusting to a new home. I thought nothing of it. After a few days I went to wash it's leaves. I found some snail shells but they seemed to be dead and so I also thought I could wash the leaves with dish soap to kill any pests and to get some good circulation of air and light. Leaves were dropping at a rapid pace. I now am staring at a bare tree with brown leaves and no matter what I do I cannot revive it. Unfortunately I cannot find the receipt as it was a gift for my birthday and my boyfriend was with me to purchase it. I called to see if there is anything I could do. But was told without a receipt they could do nothing. I get that but also am saddened that the expensive plant looked fine at the shop, but upon closer inspection was actually in poor health. It is my own fault for not inspecting closer, but who has time to check each leaf when purchasing? If you buy from Southlands please spend the time looking over the plants before buying. I have over 10 healthy house plants and am bummed this one didn't stand a chance. read more

I live in the West End but drive to Southlands Nursery for my balcony plants. This place has a fabulous selection and plants that you see no where else. I go to buy a few additional specimens-- and can't resist buying MORE than I actually have room for. While it may be a little out-of-the way for you, believe me, it is worth trip. read more

This is a bit out of my way, however, lately I prefer to go to nurseries vs. flower shop for selection and prices. It's not much cheaper than a flower shop, however, they have a different selection that is more up my ally. I have a lot of friends who are gardeners. therefore, I can get something with a bit more care. I am impressed with this place, their morals and just the whole vibe and approach of the place. read more

I had a Groupon for Southlands ($60 for $90 worth of products). The staff was unhelpful at best and downright rude at times. I have bought several Groupons and never before have I been required to pay tax on the full value of the products...this is like putting something on sale and making someone pay tax on the original price. I don't even know if that's legal. Had I actually had a better experience while shopping, I probably would've spent a lot more than the Groupon amount, but I received such poor service that I spent exactly the Groupon value and left. read more
