My boyfriend surprised me with a stop here for my birthday celebration in NYC. We didn't have a reservation so we made sure to arrive promptly at 4pm when the rooftop opened. We were escorted to the 64th floor not long after. When we stepped outside, we were greeted by incredible views of lower Manhattan. We walked around the observation deck to take in some of the other vantage points. We ordered some drinks before heading to our dinner reservation. I ordered the "Easy Money" which was Vodka, Coconut, Yuzu, Lime Leaf, and Soda. I also ordered the "Cold Snap" which contained Gin, Dry Vermouth, Snap Pea, Peach, and Plum. A little hidden, but a gem when you find it. No need to pay to visit an observation deck, when you can grab a drink here and wander their 360 wrap around balcony. Great views of lower Manhattan. You'll enter a building (might be residential) and follow the signs for Overstory. The attendant will ask for your credit card to keep a tab and then guide you to the elevator taking you up 60+ stories. I got off and realized I was at 'Saga' - the fine dining restaurant. They were closed that day, but looked lovely. Head up to the very top and there is another narrow stairwell to climb. There you will enter a classy bar. You may choose to enjoy a drink inside or take it outside to the roof deck. They have a bar outside where you may place an order too, but I found it easier to order inside. I ordered the Hojicha Tonic (no buzz) upon suggestion from the bartender who said it was good and pretty too. ($16). Sadly, I didn't enjoy the drink. There is a huge long piece of ice in it. So, not much drink in the cup. Also, looked quite basic. No extra frill. I took one sip and felt like my heart was racing so fast. I quickly had some water and hoped this feeling would pass. I was nervous to drink more. I mostly had water and slowly sipped this drink once I felt a little better. I never finished it. The cocktails are pricey $25-32. They also serve pricey little bites too. When you are ready to leave, the process to pay is seamless since they already have your credit card on file for the tab. Just verify charges and you're on your way! Venture outside for the views. It is beautiful. Unfortunately extremely windy the day I went. It was a lot to balance a drink, flying hair, and take photos of a view. Also, you are pretty high up so careful after a few drinks lol I'm sure this would be amazing at sunset, but not sure how hard it may be to get in. At 5pm there were just a few of us, but after 6:30 it started to get very busy. I'd much rather enjoy the views when it's not super crowded. We had just finished dining at Crown Shy, also at 70 Pine Street, but we were not ready to end the night. A passerbyer suggested we visit Overstory, in the same building, and wow, what an experience. There's not too many places you can get an aerial view of the city, especially lower Manhattan and Brooklyn, without it being inundated with tourists... but this is one of those spots. Before entering, you do have to put a card on file with the concierge and there's a one-drink minimum. But after that, they escort you on to the elevator and you enter a funky oasis that is one of a kind. The bar is very reminiscent of the 70s, with a half round bar and stools but there's additional seating both in and outside. When you're outside, and hopefully you'll get there on a nice night like we did, you'll get to see the city in all its glory. The cocktails are good, and reasonably priced, and the staff, in their crushed pink velvet jackets, are extremely nice, as well. Also, get the lobster roll. It's so good. They staff did their best to time it well so that we could go up to the rooftop bar after dinner and we only waited about 5 min or so. First of all, the interior is gorgeous - art deco style with disco lights throughout, it gives a really nice classy but still fun vibe. Of course, the outside patio is super nice with a good night view of the city. We didn't spend that much time outside as it was fairly cold but I can see why this spot is so well-rated. The drinks at Overstory were a bit of a letdown though. I got the Salty Dog which was frankly just salty and pretty one note. First, I can't believe I never knew this place existed before this. My friends were walking around the financial district and wanted to check out this rooftop bar. We were a party of eight with no reservations. The staff at the front desk asked us to put a deposit down for a one drink minimum per person which was not bad. We went on the elevator and were guided upstairs. As you exit the elevator and walk onto the rooftop you get a wonderful view of the whole city. We could see all of downtown and Brooklyn. It was amazing. You instantly feel that you are all the way up to the 64th floor. If you are afraid of heights this might not be the best place for you. The drinks here were $30 each. That is crazy high for a drink but you are paying for the location and the view. The staff took a long time to bring over the drinks. When they finally came by we were disappointed. It was a very light watered down drink with a large ice cube in the middle. You didn't even feel anything after finishing it. For $30 I wanted to be at least buzzed after. It was our first time here so I can't compare it to anything else. The staff said at night it does get more exciting. There are only a handful of bars in the U.S. that I consider true happy places--bars I have to visit whenever I am in that city because they transport me somewhere else entirely. Overstory is not just on that list. It is at the top of it, and at the moment, it is my favorite bar I have ever been to. It tops plenty of other lists, too. As of this review, Overstory sits at No. 6 on North America's 50 Best Bars and No. 46 on The World's 50 Best Bars. Honestly, I think it deserves to be much higher on both, but forget the rankings. Let's talk about the bar. The space | Overstory pairs one of the best views in all of New York with a bar program that fully earns the altitude. You enter by taking the long elevator ride up to Saga, the two-Michelin-star restaurant on the floor below, then walk up a curved stairwell to the penthouse level. Crown Shy, its sister restaurant, sits on the ground floor. All three operate under the same ownership, and the whole experience feels polished and intentional from the start when you check in at 70 Pine Street in FiDi. The room itself is gorgeous. Overstory is dimly lit, with a disco ball overhead casting spinning points of light across the space as it turns. The interior is sumptuous and rich, with elegant Art Deco style, a beautiful illuminated main bar, and small intimate tables tucked along the curved back wall. Even the playlist is dialed in just right--modern and energizing, but never intrusive. It is the kind of place that somehow makes everyone in the room feel like a VIP. The drinks | Overstory is not the kind of bar where they just mix ingredients and slide a cocktail across the counter. The team behind the bar--including brilliant mixologists like Atticus and Alisa--are among the best in the country: highly skilled, polished, personable, and real showmen. The menu is deeply developed, with many drinks built from components that take days or even weeks to prepare. A lot of the cocktails are prebatched, not for convenience, but to create layers of flavor, texture, and clarity that would be impossible otherwise. The result is a menu of inventive, meticulously balanced cocktails that feel unlike anything else, often finished with high-end garnishes that actually add something to the drink. A great example is the Easy Money (vodka, coconut, yuzu, lime leaf, soda), a bright, refreshing sparkling cocktail topped with Japanese kinome (not easy to find)--a delicate garnish from the sansho plant that, when chewed, lightly numbs your cheeks and tongue and sends a little electric tingle through your mouth. It is a perfect match for its paired forced-carbonation cocktail. And then there is the Terroir Old Fashioned. I am not traditionally an Old Fashioned person at all, but this is the drink that made me first fall in love with Overstory, changed my mind about the potential of the format, and remains one of my favorite cocktails of all time for good reason. Built with tequila instead of whiskey, then layered with palo santo, Vin Jaune, yellow Chartreuse, and Tilden Salt harvested by the bar team from Fort Tilden in Queens, it is inventive, precise, and unforgettable. It is served with a piece of real honeycomb that you can either let dissolve into the drink for added sweetness or just eat outright. I cannot recommend this cocktail bar enough. I think this place has great vibes, great drinks and great service. I've been here twice and my only issue is that we were gifted a gift card for Overstory and with their minimum spend, we aren't allowed to use the gift card unless we're over whatever the minimum is. So since we were gifted $50, when we spent $400 on our party of four, none of the spend was eligible for usage with a gift card. I think this policy is a bit ridiculous since the gift card is essentially cash so the minimum shouldn't even apply. read more

Got there around 1030'pm thinking I would get right in but didn't make it in until 1230. Make sure you put your name in the list and grab a drink elsewhere while you wait. They have bites and drinks. We had 3 differed drinks and they were all delicious my favorite was jasmine sour as a non alcoholic and easy money for alcoholic. All drinks are between $12-$26. Three-star pricing, four-star drinks, and five-star views. I'll fully admit that I don't understand the hype that's landed Overstory on so many "best of" bar lists. Don't get me wrong, I think it's solid; I can just rattle off a whole list of other cocktail lounges I'd rather revisit before prioritizing a return trip here. $70 for two good-but-not-great cocktails still feels awfully steep. Note, that's for open seating (which seems to mean outdoor seating or indoor standing room). As I understand, reserved table seating requires a $75 minimum spend per head. On the upside, it seems like you can achieve this with a mere two drinks, assuming tax and tip are included. They also offer some light bites (which we didn't try), so you can probably get away with a cocktail and a snack to hit that threshold. Also, my experience is likely colored by the fact that we visited during an historically cold May in NYC. It was so chilly and blustery that--even with a jacket on--it was unpleasant to be out on the wraparound deck for long. I highly recommend a reservation - however a reservation carries a $75 or $100 (can't remember) per person minimum which is honestly outrageous. Note that entrance to the bar requires a set of stairs. You take the elevator to the 63 floor (it opens into Saga restaurant) then you turn a corner and head up a flight of stairs to a Overstory. I sat at the end of the bar. The bartender was so nice! I had the In the Cloud drink which was so good, served with candy in a cloud glass. Plus a branded overstory ice cube. The bartender had made an extra drink for someone who didn't want it, so he then passed along an Easy Money to me. It was very refreshing, basically a vodka soda with yuzu. I had a bowl of the popcorn which was a bit spicy. The ambience was fun, with a spinning disco ball on the ceiling. There's bathrooms upstairs and they smell amazing thanks to the candles. I recommend going to Overstory as a walk in for a drink or two. They are pretty pricey (over $20) but it's worth going up for one drink and a nice view. We put our names down to walk in and were quoted about an hour and a half wait. We ended up waiting around 1:45, which wasn't too bad considering it was a Saturday night. The ambiance of the entire building was spectacular. You're led up to the 63rd floor and then walk the final flight up to Overstory. Once you are in the bar, you're left to find seating on your own, which was not challenging at all. The bar is dim yet lively and is the perfect spot to catch up with friends or for a date. There are little mini disco balls on the ceiling which were super cute! I wasn't drawn to anything in particular on the drink menu. We ended up going with the Maravilla and In The Clouds. The drinks were good and thoughtfully made, but I personally just enjoy drinks with a bit more mouthfeel. Service was wonderful. They gave great suggestions and were very friendly! The view was also incredible. It was chilly so we didn't stay outside for long, but I can imagine how amazing it would be to sit outside on a perfect day. Very glad I tried!! read more

Spot is tucked away up a flight of stairs once exiting an elevator at the PH level. Its decor is cute a little 70's flare with the disco ball. Seating is limited so reservations are suggested. We had a few cocktails and some small bites all tasty. Service was pleasant and efficient. The real selling point is the view on the wrap around balcony it's gorgeous at night and sunset. It's a little on the expensive side and they do not offer happy hour. read more
