This is my new favorite place to get keys duplicated. It made a copy today that's better than the original!
I never thought a copy of a key would be better than the original, and the prices and customer service were good, which earns this place a five-star "Hooray! Best ever!" rating.
The rest of this is a long story of just how much trouble this place has finally resolved for us.
After trying various cheap places to get keys copied, I had settled on the Redmond Home Depot (which is about as good as it gets for big box stores). It and the Capitol Hill Seattle QFC that used to be a Fred Meyer were the only cheap places that got copies made right the first time, including other Home Depot and Fred Meyer locations.
But I installed a (cheapo) new deadbolt on an interior door to keep my curious boy away from interesting breakable things in one room, and that lock has been pretty picky about keys; even the original was pretty sticky. Since keys sometimes get lost or wear out, I got three key copies made for that lock at Home Depot. They worked, but they were pretty sticky. I put one each on a lanyard for me and my wife, and stored the third with the original.
Before long, the boy managed to find our storage place for the original and third copy, and lost the original and hid the third copy. We found the copy and chose a more secure place to hide it.
Later, we managed to lose one of the lanyards, so it was time to get extra copies made. I asked for three -- and none worked! I returned for a do-over, and they tested out OK. We stored them with copy #3 and shared the lanyard.
Recently, we've been using the lock more (longer story), and when I got out the three copies, they no longer worked. I took one of the working keys back for three more copies -- and none worked. Next time I'm there I'll get a refund, but I'm not making a special trip.
We still needed another key copy, so this morning I went to Overlake Lock & Key, thinking maybe a lock professional could do better. It was about 11:15 am on a Saturday and they were kind of busy. Honoring their "one to two customers inside" sign (it's late 2022 and the pandemic is still with us), my boy and I waited outside while the previous customer finished.
At our turn, I went in and chose a nice yellow key blank, telling them that Home Depot copies didn't work.
They replied that they're locksmiths and Home Depot is "just a hardware store." Confidence or hubris? I would find out. They said to come back in five minutes, but didn't mind my boy's request to stick around to watch.
Five minutes later (per my phone's alarm clock), the same guy I waited for earlier was there again, finishing his transaction. I paid for the key, adding a heavy duty split-ring for my car key to the tab.
Back home, I tested the new copy. It's as smooth as a fresh key in a good quality lock! The key I copied it from is still pretty sticky, and takes extra force to turn. How did they manage that? I'm amazed.
What about price? This particular key was $4.99 plus tax. The Home Depot keys were $3.29 -- but most of them didn't work. Paying 50% extra is worth it for a key that not only works, but is better than the long-lost factory key. And I'm supporting a small business that's been there for decades. read more
