This is one of two reviews I am about to post that might get me ostracized from Yelp.
from my notes: chicken and waffles. horrible wait time. the pearl and his trailer. good product, infantile service. too bad, so sad.
I've been eating Outlaw chicken and waffles for a while. I'm not sure how long, but I know I've braved blustery, drizzly weather and insufferable heat and humidity to eat a very basic chicken and waffle.
Yes, I wrote, "a very basic chicken and waffle." And that's a very good thing. Perfect size: good waffle and a [5-6 oz ?] portion of a deep fried breaded boneless chicken breast. Real butter. Costco maple syrup. And a poof of powdered sugar. I like the simplicity. Outlaw always delivered consistent food; you knew what you were getting for nine bucks.
But (and there's always a but, isn't there?).
Outlaw has remained consistent in another important area as well: poor customer service. There is a level of understanding of the customer that if you're selling food from a truck or a stand, you'll get your food relatively quickly. More customers = longer wait...within reason. The first couple times I ordered chicken and waffles, I got my food in 10 or so minutes. The next couple visits morphed into 15 or so minute waits. The next couple visits, the promised "10 minutes, no more" morphed into 25 and 30 minute waits. But I still endured.
[the proverbial straw]
Until Outlaw tweeted he'd be posted at Alamo Eat Bar for a Saturday brunch. Arrived 20 minutes after posted opening and saw three people sitting on the patio. "Cool," I thought, "beat the freakin' crowd." Placed my order (don't have notes on price, but I do remember asking myself why the significant increase in price). And waited. And waited. And waited. And waited.
45 minutes, and maybe two dozen additional waiting patrons later, I heard my number called. It was the same chicken and waffle I remember, including the unacceptable wait for a pedestrian approach to chicken and waffles.
I am all about pedestrian food (just wait to see my review of The Granary), but if you subject me to 10 minute promises that morph into 20, 30 and 45 minute realities, then you've lost me.
I blame you for my suffering through a just as good Max's Wine Dive wings and pancake, but it is what it is. I'd love to feed your local wallet, but you continue to demonstrate that you cannot be trusted. Here's the deal: you give me chicken and waffles in a reliable 10-15 minutes, and we're getting married. You've proved that you cannot do that. You're dead to me. read more
