Man this place is good. A little bit out in the country, which makes it even better. We had the fried chicken livers for an appetizer, and loved them! Such a crispy, delicious treat. I had the Reuben and green beans for my entree, which were both really good. My friend had the pork chop and kale, and licked his plate clean. If you love southern cooking and are feeling nostalgic for dinners around your grandmother's kitchen table, this place will sate both your appetite and your need to reconnect with something that feels so close to home. Ever eat someplace and bite into something and immediately realize that whatever it is was on the back of a Sysco truck at some point in the very recent past? Not here! The menu isn't fancy but everything on it is cooked from scratch and made by hand and it *tastes* like it! When Cracker Barrel goes to sleep at night, this is the place it dreams itself to be. It's situated in a rural map-dot of a town called Smithfield that only has a single stop sign. The building itself was part of a late 19th century roller mill complex (the main mill building was located directly across the street but it was dismantled and relocated to Tennessee in 2017) and it's received few obvious upgrades over the years, which only contributes to its charm. Some things to be aware of: 1) It's in the middle of absolutely nowhere, but the drive is really lovely - especially if you're not native to Kentucky. Take your time and soak it in! 2) Theres *always* a wait and they don't take reservations. Even at 530p, we still waited 45-60 minutes to get seated. 3) Enjoy the porch wait. There's an atmosphere on that porch that's hard to come by anymore these days. There are a lot of regulars of all ages that frequent this place and they're all happy to say hi! As good as the food is, this alone is worth stopping for. 4) Theres no obvious sign of A/C, but the overhead fans keep the air moving enough that, unless you're very heat sensitive, it's still quite comfortable. 5) They don't serve alcohol. So, if it's been a tough week and you're looking forward to a liquid wind-down, it'll have to be someplace else. 6) If you're working hard to drop that quarantine weight, they do have quite a few salads on the menu. They also have several wonderful gluten-free options. 7) The menu includes congealed applesauce and cottage cheese with peaches (old-time, homespun eats that just make my heart smile). 8) Get the fried green tomatoes. Seriously. And the fried chicken is their signature dish for a reason. 9) Definitely save room for dessert! The cobbler may just change your life! All-in-all, this place is a treasure for so many reasons. So, take your time, soak up the rustic Kentucky charm, enjoy some really good home-cooked food and remember what life was like when you knew your neighbors and life wasn't entirely consumed by screens (note: the cellphone reception is almost nonexistent. What a pleasant little surprise. We visited here after looking at some realty and I'm so thankful we did. Out in Smithfield middle of unchartered land for me is this adorable family restaurant. It's like stepping into my grandmothers kitchen kind of feeling. Decorated in old farm signs and antiques made it inviting and warm. The food was great, I had the porch chop plate with fried green tomatoes mashed potatoes and they bring corn bread. Delicious! Everything was cooked perfectly and great proportions. We were there with a large party and occupied the entire back room. the waitress(s) were extremely cheerful, helpful and attentive. Food orders were promptly taken and food was out in a reasonable amount of time. Drinks were refilled and hot fried cornbread was delivered. Everyone seemed to enjoy the food (most had been there before). It was the first time for my wife and I and we found the food well-cooked served hot with generous portions at reasonably/low prices. MHeading to LaGrange where there are only a few local restaurants, so to hear this one was close, I thought I should try it.  So so glad we did!  The food was delicious !! I got fried chicken, fried green tomatoes, and green beans.  My husband got fried pork chops and fried okra. Corn cakes come with it. EVERY single meal item was perfectly cooked.  I enjoyed every bite.  So did my husband.  We even got dessert.  We got 1/2 peach and half blackberry cobbler with ice cream.  Oh my!!! So so perfect.  The peach was the best peach cobbler I've ever had.   It's out in the deep country which sets the mood for the experience we were about to enjoy. Since it's a landmark there is a Pokestop which I love. If you sat in the front area, you could open the pokestop every few minutes and literally fill your bag.    We sat in the back where reception was bad.  They have a little gift area. I should have bought the coworker that recommended this place something special.  The restaurant has wood like a barn with cute country decor.  Old recipe books, cast iron pans, and chicken wire for stalls/seating area.  Parking was plenty. We'll be back:) -- 4/4/17. Just had lunch again there and EVERYTHING was perfect again. I like consistency. If they were closer I would go more often. Stopped here for lunch on my day off, today. We had been to this location years ago (10) and I could hardly remember the food. I know they had opened a couple locations in Louisville that didn't make it, I'm not exactly sure why. This is a wonderful place full of southern hospitality and charm. The food is homemade goodness. I had the country ham ( not for the faint of heart...I LOVED it!!!) that had great flavor and was salty as all get out. I also had the pickled beets which seemed to have a spice (maybe clove) that were served chilled and were quite tasty. Between my husband and I, we also tried the coleslaw (only thing I didn't love because I'd had a little too much white onion in it for me), mashed potatoes and gravy, cherry cobbler, and a hot roast beef sandwich covered in gravy. Everything was amazing!!! They had a ton of other desserts that I would love to try; coconut cream pie, peanut butter pie, chocolate cream pie, peach cobbler, other fruit pies, and bread pudding. Best of the best back road American restaurants! Don't try and get in on a Friday or Saturday during dinners, try the take out instead or call and make a reservation. Better yet, come by for an early dinner and enjoy the charming comfort of what Cracker Barrel is a cheap remake of without the crowd. Smithfield has a rich history as a farming community, unfortunately the Our Best mill no longer exists but don't let that deter you from ordering some real down home cooking. We absolutely have to come to Our Best every time we come through La Grange. The staff are always friendly and will are always quick with a suggestion if you are undecided on your meal or sides. Our Best Restaurant was our personal find for great fried chicken, but after the last visit I'm completely over this remote Kentucky outpost. It's way out there, about 8 miles off I-71, in the country, which is why we loved going there. My latest experience was SO disappointing. Sitting amidst 10,000 business cards thumbtacked onto the walls of this converted grain storehouse is somewhat novel, but without great food and great service, it's just not cool. Their fried chicken is very good indeed, but not so good that it offsets the atmosphere, which is uninspired, quirky country; it also doesn't offset the lack of cleanliness. I need to mention that the dining room floor was filthy on a Sunday at 3 pm, with chopped tomatoes, cheese and other goodies adorning the pine right next to our table. And there was no one in the restaurant except one other table. I lost my appetite for some reason right then; I suppose it's because the kitchen is only 20 feet away. I ordered the special of bean soup (bland beyond belief) and a pork chop plus fried corncakes, for 6 bucks. Just ok on all three items but the price was right. I can't recommend but I likely ordered the wrong item. Gotta tell it like it is. Service was really, really bad; our server was so nice and apologized 5 times for making us wait so long for every single food item.... and for disappearing for long stretches, but the damage was already done. Bottom line: the thrill is gone, so no more exerting the extra effort of a side trip to revisit. read more

Tonight my wife and I had supper at Our Best Restaurant. When our waitress ask me what I wanted, I said what ever smells so good on the front porch. She laughed and said it was probably the fried chicken and that's what they sold the most. I said OK, I'll have the three piece fried chicken meal with mashed potatoes, dark gravy, and fried apples. i specified 2 wings and a leg. My wife ordered herb and garlic grilled chicken breast, fried greens tomatoes and baked potato and loved her meal also. My family ate dinner here on account of the glowing reviews. I really wanted to like this place, because I love a good independent restaurant. Unfortunately, I can't classify what we had as good. We had the roast beef, which came with soggy and slimy gravy soaked sliced bread and flavorless, tough beef. That was a total swing and a miss. We also ordered the fried chicken. The fried chicken was okay. Not amazing, but okay. The texture was good, the chicken nicely fried, but the flavor was just lacking. What a quaint little place in the middle of the country. The inside has plenty of old items to look at while you're waiting on your food. There was ample seating when we stopped by for lunch. The place had that old time feel to it. I wish I would have had my phone to take pictures. The food was delicious. Taste just like granny's meals on the farm after working in the fields all day. Came several months ago, and still remember how disappointing my experience was. Yes, the service was efficient and the meal was delicious. However, our server was sullen from beginning to end. This is a family owned restaurant in a small country village. The only thing close by is the Smithfield post office, besides a number of quaint little houses. Think of Our Best Restaurant as the original Cracker Barrel without the kitsch and commercialism. The building was formerly a feed store for a roller mill across the street that is being dismantled and moved to a buyer in Tennessee. The food is down home country cooking. (And much better than that "other place" I mentioned above, if you ask me.) The chicken livers are very good, as well as the meat loaf. Their fried chicken is as good as you would expect. They have all your country favorites, including okra, succotash, dumplings and grits. There are pies and cobbler available too. And a very small gift shop. The service is friendly and efficient. If you come on a Sunday after church, prepare yourself for a bit of a wait, but it will be worth it. Closed Mondays. read more

I apologize for the late review. I came in last week and because there's no reception I was unable to type of the review while I was waiting to be acknowledged by my server. There were five tables full and two working. The woman that greeted me was friendly providing the menu and asking if I needed anything. The girl that ended up being my server didn't provide any details regarding that day's specials or any care outside of her required tasks. I finished eating and observed her provide in abundance of over the top care to a couple that had newly arrived. She even went so far as to sit down with them to make them feel even more comfortable. I would definitely agree that this would be The Real Cracker Barrel. Antiques decorating this lobby and walls, a real country porch complete with old church pews to sit on. Exceptionally friendly and courteous staff. Oh, and real sweet tea. It's the south, I mean, they better. I had read the previous reviews and noticed a trend that the best choices were either the fried pork chops, meatloaf, or fried chicken. I opted to go with the fried pork chop (just one), kale greens, and fried green tomatoes. I mean, I can't do everything fried. I need to be able to walk to my car and all. My plate itself looked fairly appetizing, but I was surprised to find that all my food was laying on top of a johnny cake. Yes, a johnny cake. The holy grail of country cooking. I saved this delightful morsel for dessert actually. The crispy cornmeal treat was so delicate and crunchy at the same time that I could hardly believe it. This was worth the trip in itself. They should really just sell these by themselves. The rest of the food was decent. My fried pork chop was tasty, but a little dry inside. The fried green tomatoes were good, but could have used a little more seasoning in my book. The chipotle mayo on the side definitely helped them out quite a bit. The green were surprisingly very dry and unseasoned, which I guess was standard for picky eaters. I was supplied with salt and pepper (and vinegar!) without asking, so they ended up being pretty good after all. Overall, I would call this a decent place to eat. The waiter said he could microwave it and then proceeded to tell me that they cook their chicken early in the day and put it in a warmer. He then told me they can't afford to cook chicken fresh. Some very good homesytyle food with great service and very comfortable atmosphere! Not a lot of places like this are left to enjoy these days, make the trip to Smithfield KY and relax with a home cooked meal. We started with Mashed Potato Bombs and Chicken Livers, both served with cornbread pancakes, the livers were large, well prepared and as good as any you will find, I asked for a side of gravy to dip! The MP Bombs were alright (I am not a big fried mash potato or mac & cheese fan), my wife liked them plenty! For dinner I ordered their famous Fried Pork Chop Dinner with Green Beans and Fried Okra, my wife ordered the 2 meat Combo with Meatloaf and Salmon Patty. All the meats were very tasty, seasoned well and in huge portions, all the sides (wife had the beets and lima beans) fresh and aplenty! Dessert was not needed but I ordered Cherry Cobbler with Ice Cream and it was definitely the cherry on top of a great meal! We will be back often! read more
