Nothing beats grandmas home cookin' but this restaurant serves up some good southern staples that make you feel at home. The restaurant was clean and nicely decorated. Service was friendly. Pricing was fair. They serve complementary corn bread, which is fried "old school." Our food was served hot and was tasty. We ordered the meatloaf, salad, mashed potatoes, country fried steak, and mac & cheese. The steak was tender, the mashed potatoes tasted real, the white gravy was a good consistency and flavor. For the meatloaf, it seems the ketchup was added after being cooked and we prefer it to be cooked with the meat. This place has something of a cult following for a reason. Imagine simple favorite foods cooked consistently, in a restaurant that feels like a cozy old general store and has friendly service. That pretty much sums up Our Best in a nutshell. I had visited before, but it was probably in the last millennium. No, seriously. For a recent weekend, we wanted to treat a family member to a birthday, their choice. They chose Our Best, and I was curious to check the place out again. We were greeted with a smile when we walked in the door, and seated immediately. Our server came over promptly and took our drink orders. We also placed an order for the fried pickles. I had a hard time choosing what I wanted for my main meal: the country chicken looked great, salmon was tempting, meatloaf sounded filling on a cold day, and even the fried chicken was appealing. I went with a very classic combo of meatloaf with mashed potatoes and green beans. The fried pickles were plenty flavorful even without the dipping sauce, and our main course was promptly delivered. I was starving and forgot to take a photo, and I quickly ate the meatloaf meal. Like I said: simple but cooked very well and with great flavors. I ended up devouring the whole meal in short order. Other people in my party got the bluegill platter and the kids cheeseburger. Every plate ended up clean. All 6 of us ate for under $100, which is unheard of these days. There are chain restaurants that attempt to emulate down home cookin', but Our Best is the real deal. This place is insanely busy at certain times of the day and more so on weekends, but the food is exceptionally tasty and well priced so it's worth the wait. Very casual atmosphere with old photos and antiques located throughout which creates a true farmhouse ambiance. It's located in a small town and everybody knows everybody...people come here to enjoy good food and good conversations. This was our first trip and I can hardly wait to return again soon because the menu has many options for entrees and sides along with a host of desserts. read more

Our Beat Restaurant is worth finding. Period. A former mill turned into a landmark restaurant kind of in the middle of the country about 40 minutes outside Louisville is busy for a reason. Great comfort food with specials and affordable prices. Order out early as it was gone by the time we ordered dinner Saturday night at around 6 pm. Got there at 530 and had about 20 minute wait for our group of five, but worth it. I had the maple glazed pork tenderloin with mashed potatoes and green beans. Others at the table ordered fried chicken and meatloaf. We had fried cornbread for the table. Great spot to meet friends and have a wonderful comfort food meal. Our server was ready with a quick greet and immediately took our drink orders and made a couple of recommendations, she had me at fried green tomatoes. The food is delicious, it was home cooked country food at its best. I had the meatloaf severed with green beans and mashed potatoes. I'm trying to avoid bread but that roll had my name on it..I ate it. The service is outstanding, we had no complaints and our server was smiling genuinely. Casual ambiance has a country feel to it, no music. Restrooms were clean as was the dining area. It was a great dining experience. I have always given this place a 5 star in the past. however, this time I have to remove one star because of the service. It was not only slow, but we got very little attention. Had to ask for a drink refill and another order of Corn Cakes (which were extremely greasy). I also didn't think the flavor of the food was as good as it has always been. I had the fried chicken 3 piece. I asked for a breast, thigh and drumstick. I didn't get a thigh and got a small wing. The server said, oh they must have forget to check to order. Went yesterday around 2:30 with my family of 5 and only waited about 15 minutes. Restaurant was packed with families and everyone enjoying which was so good to see! Our waitress was really busy and not super friendly but I've been there before so nothing against that! She was doing her best! We tried the loaded potato bombs for an app which came with 6 and sour cream, we enjoyed them! Some of us got grilled chicken, pork tenderloin, burgers, and pork chops. Loved the unique decor and country feel of this out of the way, in the country restaurant. Its appearance is that of a renovated old barn. Think of a Cracker Barrel that is authentic. Menu are country food items. Specials appear daily including on a Sunday. Dessert cobblers are delicious. Portions are average. Service was excellent. Was seated immediately at 1 on a Sunday. We absolutely love having dinner here. We go almost every Saturday as they currently have the Blue Gill and my 2 year old can't get enough of it. We have been going for years. Service is all top notch, the staff always seem to enjoy what they do. It's a quaint little restaurant that serves great big down home flavors. Incredible every visit! Every time I am in the area, I always look forward to going to Our Best Restaurant in Smithfield, KY. Located about 30 minutes north of Shelbyville, this is the bench mark for fine home cookin' food! Fried chicken is always cooked to perfection and the sides are seasoned perfectly. I have also had their farm fresh catfish, and country ham as well. My wife loves their chicken livers. You really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. It's all good! Always cooked fresh and hot with the finest ingredients. No corners cut here. Their motto is, "You haven't had our best until you've had dessert!" which is exactly true. It's a small country cookin restaurant that sits in a location where there isn't much else around. The Pork Chops are my favorite, whether grilled or fried. Any side dish on the menu won't miss and is a safe play. The corn bread isn't sweet corn bread but it's very good. The prices aren't crazy nor is the wait time to be seated. Out on a Sunday drive? This is worth a trip. The menu reminds me of Sunday dinners back in the day. My pork chop was fried just right and I was delighted they had lima beans. Used to love this place as a throwback to older days and menus. Recently though something seems off. The once very fresh salads haven't been. The once good meatloaf is now dense and tasteless with what seems like a can of unseasoned tomato paste poured on top. The chicken is still Okay and service is good but we no longer find the drive worth the food. read more

I came here with family last week. After living in California for a handful of years I'm back in Kentucky, and walking into Our Best felt like a big hug by way of welcome home. There's interesting history in the location and town that is clear from the start, and that legacy is alive and well in the food that comes out of this kitchen. I ordered a 3 piece chicken meal with lima beans and cole slaw. My brother had the fried fish, and my sister in law had the meatloaf meal. In each case, the sides held their own. Was out this way today and thought I would check it out today on Oaks Day! I ordered the 3 piece fried chicken and my wife had liver & onions! You get 2 sides and cornbread with each meal! My Chicken was so delicious along with the fried green tomatoes and okra! My wife got 3 pieces of liver along with real mashed potatoes and okra! The cornbread was perfect too! WOW! Came here on a recommendation from a coworker and I was not disappointed. Nestled in the country is this gem of a restaurant. The inside is dark and it's definitely the type of place the locals go to. The service was very friendly, the food was delicious (with generous portions), and the prices can't be beat. I got the two piece fried chicken with mashed potatoes and beans. I also got coffee and those biscuits (shaped more like pancakes? Never seen anything like it) are ADDICTING. Nestled in the middle of no where is Our Best. It's a drive. A destination, if you will. I literally found this place when I was randomly searching things on Google Maps. Anyway... This place is pretty small, and we went on a Saturday night right during the rush. We waited awhile for a table, but, that's how it goes sometimes. The staff was all nice and pleasant. The sweet tea was very, very sweet. 3 stars though? Yeah. I mean, it's good food, but it was just lacking pizazz for me. The fried green tomatoes and mashed potatoes were on point and I would very much eat those again. The fried pork chops were tasty, just left me wishing I'd gotten something else. Wife said the chicken livers were good (not my thing, I strongly disliked the taste) and agreed about the mashed potatoes and gravy. The big issue was that the later the night for the more and more stuff they were running out of. Running out of dessert, I get that, but regular menu items? You're out today but they'll magically be back tomorrow? If fried southern food is your thing then it's worth checking out. If it's not, I'd go somewhere else. read more

What a find . Friendly service and great food. I had the special of pork chop with the pinto beans and it came with two cornbread cakes. The pork chop was delicious it was juicy and the breading was fantastic not to thick and not to thin. They know how to fry here. The beans were great as well. And the cornbread could of been better if they gave you more the two were like a tease. I would order more next time and get some jam or honey to smother on these circles of love. If you are passing through on interstate 71 and are craving a home cooked meal then I recommend checking out this family owned restaurant. It's about 10 minutes from the insterstate and worth going the few extra miles. Not to mention it is full of history. The fried green tomatoes are in the "some of the best I've ever had" category, for sure. The fried cornbread was also good. In fact, there was not a single complaint from our group. We tried the Reuben, chicken leg, chicken tenders, fries, potato's, corn, onion rings and okra, in addition to the items I already mentioned. The apple cobbler was also to die for. The portions were large and filling. Customer service was outstanding. And the old mill has been disassembled, and will be reconstructed in the state of Tennessee. I'm a huge fan of mom and pops eateries as well as any place that is rich in history. This place, nailed it! We will definitely be back when in the area. read more
