This is by far the most delicious, lovely restaurant I've been to in AGES. I swear it beats Olmsted, which I also thought was great.
Every single dish we had tonight was impeccable, exciting even. And the service is wonderful, the space is gorgeously comfortable, the cocktails are fabulous, and the portions are substantial, and the prices are quite moderate. What more could you ask for??
Two of us--super hungry and always excessively big eaters--ordered nearly every appetizer and shared one entree:
-chickpea snack: deep fried in beef tallow and tossed in a seasoning reminiscent of salt and vinegar fries (Crazy addictive!)
-Little gems salad with buttermilk dressing and pickled fennel. It was perfectly dressed and had these incredibly fried buttermilk curds (!) and dill powder on top. And was huge, for $12, I think.
-Complimentary house-made bread with crazy delicious butter. The bread was a country sourdough (multigrain, perhaps), that was piping hot, tender and toothy on the inside, with a crispy, perfect crust on the outside.
-House cured Ikura tarts -- these little two-bite tarts, made with a crispy shell, a little creme fraiche (I think), and a pile of ikura, for $5 a piece. The Ikura was incredible -- more fresh and briny-clean tasting than I've ever had.
-A steak tartar toast -- this was so good we almost ordered a second. Marvelously seasoned almost-raw steak (I actually think it was slightly cooked, maybe seared just a touch, then chopped up and seasoned really beautifully), topped with a pile of green spring things (I think it was shallot greens, raw snow pea slices, and charred spring onions), on top of their amazing house-made country sourdough. This was quite large--a big appetizer for two and would have made a terrific lunch for one ($15)
-Snails--five or six fairly large, tender snails, along with 5 or 6 perfectly cooked fingerling halves, in a bright green green garlic sauce. I almost licked the plate. Thought about asking for more of the delicious bread to sop up any remaining sauce, but I thought I'd restrain myself at least a little.
-Pork entree was, I believe, grilled pieces of meaty pork belly, on top of a perfect puree of spring peas and a bit of perfectly cooked barley pearls, topped with a blood sauce. I thought it was going to be overwhelming, as there was a LOT of blood sauce, but whoa--it was perfect. I'm glad we shared it because it might have been too rich for me to eat on my own (um, considering how much I'd already eaten, especially), but half a plate left me marveling at how good it was.
-Two cocktails each, all of which were really, really good (especially the rhubarb gin drink). And, they served them in highballs and tumblers, not tiny little cocktail glasses (which is a trend I am not keen about).
-Too full to order dessert.
-The check arrived with two house-made miso-orange caramels. I thought they'd be interesting, but I didn't expect them to be delicious. I was wrong! Crazy perfect flavors together.
Total bill: $145.
And again, the service was perfect. Friendly, down-to-earth, and attentive without hovering.
I don't think I've ever quite raved about a place like this before. I mean, usually I'm critical of SOMETHING (or a lot), but this place was spot on tonight, in every way.
(Last time we had the radish salad--enormous and delicious! Perfect, delicious radishes (like, did they grow them out back?? So fresh!), dressed and topped with shaved bottarga; the black sea bass entree, and the smoked beef tongue entree -- all very good.) read more
