*QUARANTINE PICKUP* Solely making comments about the amazing bread made and sold here. Came here out in a blistering rain storm with these delicious half loaves of bread. This was amazing. Only reason I have not returned is because it is across town for me. But the bread here is remarkable and they came through selling the half loaves! Some people should not walk out of here with two full loaves because they will eat two full loaves in one day ( me ) These babies were nice and warm when I picked them up and I dug right in and snatched a piece off. When I got home I slapped a ton of butter on it and it couldn't have tasted any better. He let my friend charge her phone, and also brought tabasco sauce before someone finished saying the word "Tabasc..." Also, taking care of such a large group is no easy feat. "Best egg sandwich in NYC" according to the local in front of us in line. it did not disappoint! we are visiting from out if town and went two days in a row. I also got the kale salad with the lamb merguez patty on the side. 100%! The pastries were almost all sold out when we arrived before closing time, so definitely come early if you want to try their awesome selection of pastries. I said it 100 times and I'll say it again, best breakfast sandwich I've ever had. Most coffee drinks are good too; I'd choose an iced americano over a cold brew. I'd take the deluxe breakfast over the omelette which is a more muted flavour because of the cheese choice. Tomato sandwich, it's in season, is bomb. read more

I think this is my first review in many many years! Anyways... back to Otway, which we decided to try because I had passed by before and it looked cozy and intimate and gotta say, I'm glad we did! We made reservations for Sunday night. We are always a bit skeptical about dining at intimate places with a toddler because you get looks and I get it, sometimes they're a bit much. But I was relieved that upon arrival we were welcomed by the staff who were all super friendly and accommodating. They sat us down and took our drink and appetizer order. We went for the classic Negroni and the Sunkissed (both solid) paired with the Trout Crudo and dates in duck fat (highly recommend). For our meals, we both are steak lovers, so we ordered the Hanger steak. The steak was cooked to perfection... juicy, tender and savory with sauce Au Poivre... yum yum this is making me hungry! For dessert we had the Pavlova which was a variation to your regular pavlova so it was interesting and what made this pavlova stand out was that it was the right amount of tart/sour and sweet. KenScale: 7.5/10 Throughout my culinary journey, I have always hoped to find more neighborhood gems that nobody is talking about but yet I felt more satisfaction than other more publicized and hyped openings. I have started to develop a fairly good hunch too when I see a restaurant being discussed on the Internet that this could have a gem potential. I sincerely believed that Otway, a restaurant in Brooklyn with all-female kitchen led by the team behind what used to Tilda All Day, has such potential to really wow me. When I stepped into the restaurant with my wife Jun after watching a movie (highly recommend the Shape of Water, by the way), the lovely vibe of the dining space instantly drew us in and we were positive we would have an awesome time here. It saddens me even more therefore to say that Otway is not a gem after all, as we saw too many more misses than hits. The menu at Otway is divided into various hors d'oeuvre bites, smaller plates and larger main dishes. I can never say no to sea urchin, and the uni crepe was certainly a nice start to the meal (although Jun is not a fan of this creature's texture in general and nudged me to eat the whole thing after one bite). When we discussed the menu with the server, we were hesitant whether to order raw venison. We should've stayed away from it, as it turned out to be a pretty gamey and tough piece of meat that was not easy to swallow even after multiple bites. Having huckleberry sprinkled throughout the meat didn't help either. The biggest disappointment of our meal was probably the duck breast with charred radicchio, red beets and Asian pear. Jun is obsessed with and therefore has high standards for duck meat, and she was not pleased at all that the meat was not cooked well (and the server didn't ask what temperature we preferred). Instead of moist and juicy meat, what we had was surprisingly tough. In addition, charred radicchio had such a potent flavor that instead of complementing the duck's flavor and texture, it quickly undermined them. The other large dish that we ordered, ricotta gnudi with cauliflower, maitake and brown butter, was more successful but it wasn't enough to overcome the duck's deficiencies. Despite our underwhelming experience, we did decide to order a dessert, and that turned out to be a smart choice, as we really loved the passion fruit tart with chocolate ganache sprinkled throughout that provided a beautiful combination of flavor without overpowering our palate. Getting a reservation at Otway wasn't too difficult and the dining space wasn't quite packed (although by no means empty) on a Saturday evening. Booking in advance is probably recommended but not required. There is full bar with some nice cocktail selections to complement your meal. As noted above, I definitely give credit to the lovely space that can work for a variety of different occasions for casual hangouts in Brooklyn. After finishing the tart, Jun and I wondered how things would've turned out had this place remained a café like Tilda All Day (which I have never been to prior to its shutter) focusing on pastries because the tart was pretty memorable even though the savory courses that came before had flaws. Went to Otway for dinner with my partner and was blown away. From hello to coffee they nailed it. They were busy with a great atmosphere; bustling but still able to hear your conversation. We sat at the bar and had bread & butter, a salad, and then steak and halibut for entres. @!h8ing fantastic. Halibut was one of the better prepared dishes I've had in a while. Even though it was crowded and loud, the meal my wife and I had at Otway last Saturday night was one of the best we've had in a long long time. My wife and I had a 7:15 reservation but due to some uncontrollable circumstances we couldn't make it until around 9:15. The folks there couldn't have been any kinder and made sure a table was available for us when we finally arrived. It's a small space and very loud (probably even a little louder than your average small and boisterous NY restaurant on a Saturday night. Fortunately for us our server was so good at making sure we could hear everything he said. Even though they didn't have the one thing I was most looking forward to trying (crab salad crepe), everything we ordered was absolutely fantastic. We started with the onion rings which were a bit too large but tasted delicious. Certainly one of the better onion rings I've ever tasted even though the ketchup was a bit strange tasting. We ordered the snails and an Arctic char tartare to start and both were outstanding. The snails were buttery and indulgent without being too chewy. The Arctic char tartare was equally delicious and the creme fraiche, bread crumbs and tarragon accompanying it worked pretty well. I usually like a pop of salt or acidity in a tartare but those elements would have overwhelmed the flavor of the char. For our mains my wife ordered the dorade with lobster sauce and I ordered the vegetarian special (oyster mushrooms with a green garlic risotto). Both were fantastic -- seasoned and cooked perfectly. The dorade was definitely the better dish but the mushrooms were a very hearty and tasty vegetarian option. Ended the meal with the yeast semifreddo topped with huckleberries and what looks and tasted like a ginger snap. The cookie on top was useless but the semifreddo was delicious. Overall a wonderful experience and a place I will definitely try again. read more

Beware -- this restaurant is forcing customers to come even when sick ! To visit the neighborhood, I decided to have brunch with my friends at this location. The same morning, my 8 month old, husband and I were all sick with a fever and pain, so I attempted to cancel the reservation. For some reason, I wasn't able to do so online so I called the restaurant instead and was assured that I would not be charged. But this morning SURPRISE, my card has been charged 77$! After calling the restaurant again, I was informed that "everyone is using that 'excuse'" now and that it was their policy to charge even when customers have covid-like symptoms. And I even told them that I had my test results took the same day before my reservation hour. Nowadays it is very dangerous to have a policy that encourages customers to visit the restaurant even of their symptoms. @Otway - Should I have come and share my virus with everyone? read more

Haven't been here in ages and certainly pleased to note that this spot has managed to find a way to survive the pandemic. We went for tea/drinks on a late Saturday afternoon. The tea selection isn't lush--Earl Grey, Chamomile and something else--which is a surprise but perhaps not as their espresso drinks run the beverage program during the day. The happy hour is priced comparatively well and one of the only ones in the neighborhood. I think they have oysters as their happy snack but don't snooze on their fries, not exactly a large portion but a very well done one. I've had their anchovies on bread and it's a perfect bite for those who love the small fish. I'm not 100% sure but I believe the owner, Samantha Safer, might still bake the bread? Sometimes it's on offer through IG via DM. The service is pleasant enough and really, spending money here is just about saving the neighborhood's restaurants, cafés, and bars. How could I not have written an earlier review for one of my favorite neighborhood restaurants? If pastries and great coffee are your thing, you cannot do better. Cannot. Do. Better. Prepare for a line, but it's small and you'll just feel clever knowing about this unassuming, small gem with its cheerful window full of pastries. If fresh baked bread is your thing, you CANNOT DO BETTER. Delish, one of my faves. The dinner menu can be controversial. Small portions for not such small prices. But, if you are looking for a delicious, inventive menu in a charming, delightful environment with a really special wine and drinks list AND you are prepared to splurge a bit (you guessed it), you cannot do be better. Come a bit earlier on a weeknight and and you can hit some happy hour deals. Don't go here. The staff is just awful. I made a brunch reservation here for a table for 2. When I walked in no one greeted me. I had to finally grab someone's attention and then was led to 2 seats a crowded communal table right next to a large party right by the bathroom. The reservation said nothing about the table being communal. When I asked if there was an actual table for 2, I was told no but that I could sit at the bar if I preferred. I agreed to that and when I sat and was given a menu someone else came over an moved my water glass over to another spot at the bar without asking or telling me why. When I said I was waiting for my fiend and and that I had had a table reservation that could not be accommodated and already moved once and I would prefer to sit in the original spot at the bar she condescendingly told me that she understood the heat was making people angry. I was not angry just stating fact which I told her and then she accused me of being unwell and that I should find happiness. Obviously she was the one with the issue and has no business speaking to customers. I would normally have left but I had a limited time to catch up with a friend and did not want to waste time looking for another spot with a table available on a busy Sunday. I dealt with someone else instead of the crazy first server who was fine but the food which was just eggs and cut fruit took over 30 minutes to come out and we had to ask for napkins and silverware. The AC was barely working on a super hot day. People were fanning themselves to deal with it. Just overall a terrible experience. I will never be back. I don't need rude comments and terrible service with my just OK food. read more

You're missing out if you haven't eaten here. First, in the covid world, it feels safe. Second, EVERYTHING we've ever eaten has been delicious. Their jelly donut are things to dream about. We enjoyed the Otway Sunday brunch experience a few weeks ago. Loved the menu options. I had the omelette. My personal preference is for eggs to be cooked just to the point where liquid egginess transforms to solid. In other words I view eggs with crispy edges or browning due to high temperature as over-cooked. The chef at Otway gets it right. My omelette was perfectly cooked and paired with asparagus and cheese. I only wish that I lived closer and could sample more of their menu. I just moved to the neighbor and Otway is maybe 50 steps from my front door, making it a must-try restaurant for me (proximity really determines a lot for me as a NY dweller). I came here for a Wednesday night date and while the ambiance is very relaxed and nice for a quiet, intimate dinner, the food left something to be desired. Food-wise, we had the seared red cabbage, the green goddess salad, the cavatelli, and roasted chicken. I was pleased to see a Gruner Veltliner on the wine menu too - that's what we drank for the night. For food, my favorite dish was actually the complimentary bread they bring to your table. It's soft and tasty, especially with the butter! I thought the cabbage, salad, and cavatelli were just... meh. I didn't try the chicken, the waiter said it's great though (didn't get my date's review). I might try again for brunch, will definitely go back for morning coffee or drinks - no more dinner, though. read more

I live down the block from here and love having a special occasion restaurant nearby. And dinner is usually excellent, with ambitious offerings that vary with the seasons. But what I love most, and wish was available daily, is the chocolate brioche roll that is occasionally available on weekday mornings when Otway serves breakfast. This pastry is basically a French version of babka, and once you've eaten it you'll wonder why you bothered with the thousands of mediocre chocolate breakfast pastries that fill this borough.
