Great Japanese Curry! Shocked to taste a great tonkatsu curry here. This might have been one of my favorite Japanese curries ever to be honest. The pork was crunchy and tender, the rice pillowy and up to the task of soaking up all the great curry. I didn't leave any curry sauce behind. The matcha was also equally on par. The shop is somewhat depressed into the surrounding landscape which made it difficult to recognize at first, it definitely added to the aura of a hidden find. The only annoyance was that it was packed with, let's say, entitled college students, parked for what seemed like the long haul buried in their laptops who couldn't be bothered at all because whatever they were working on was of the utmost priority. I'm sure they were all working on brokering world peace or the cure for cancer. LOL. I do suppose that is their market audience so perhaps I shouldn't complain but thankfully the staff was really sweet sensing that I was having trouble locating a place to sit. high quality coffee, beautiful interior, delicious pastries and quality japanese comfort cuisine. a match made in heaven for a cafe lover. I got the karaage curry and the chicken was divine. super tender and well seasoned, the coating was crispy and paired well with the homey japanese curry. I do wish there were some more veggies in the curry but flavor wise was still great. I also got the miso soup, which was a typical miso soup but overall had a great salty and deep miso flavor. also got a matcha cookie that had some great deep matcha flavor with a nice chewy texture. if you're a matcha lover and enjoy a more ceremonial grade matcha vs a starbucks matcha this cookie will be you're favorite. the coffee here was superb quality, not a lick of bitterness and you could tell the beans were picked with a certain flavor profile in mind. i got a maple latte and it was the perfect balance of milk to coffee, the maple was also not too overpowering and served as a nice sweetener. service here was impeccable, it was absolutely packed and a battle to find a place to sit but an employee helped seat us and delivered our food efficiently. much appreciated that we got help and didn't have to fight haha overall great spot! read more

This cafe happened to be right across the hotel I was staying at, so I went 3 times during my visit to Montreal. The interior is super spacious and vibey. Love the retro/hip decor. The crowd is young -- seems like students come here to study. All the drinks and treats I tried were delightful. As a matcha snob, I'll say that the matcha is better than most establishments that offer "matcha" but not amazing (still a little diluted for my liking). Service can be a little slow. read more

10 x this please is 100% a great vibe and matcha place to chat or work at. They have tables indoor and outdoor. Indoor there is a disco ball and I imagine they have evening events to have fun. We were there in the day. I got the matcha and the Hojicha lattes with oat milk. Matcha was a 8/10 but the Hojicha was a 10/10! Seriously so good. They also have sandos that looked great. I had the tomago sando! I enjoyed it, however the music is a bit loud which made ordering difficult. Somehow salmon was added to my order/sandwich so I had to peel it off as I am vegetarian and did not intend to order anything added on. Came to this place because I'd heard good things about their egg and katsu sandos. We got here early around 9:30am but realized the kitchen doesn't open until 11am, so we ended up ordering from the breakfast menu instead. I got the egg-salad toast and a matcha latte. The egg salad was very tasty, and the thick toast was crunchy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The matcha latte was pretty standard, I asked for it unsweetened, but their matcha powder is a premix with sugar, so the sweetness couldn't be adjusted. Still tasted pretty good though. The inside of the café is really nice and spacious. There are smaller tables along the sides and bigger communal tables in the middle. It was empty when we arrived, but by around 11am it got really crowded and there weren't many empty seats left. We came on a snowy day, and I appreciated that they had a coat rack at the front to hang your jackets. You order at the counter and they bring the food out to you, which is convenient. We actually came back for lunch later, but since I'd already had the egg toast, I didn't feel like getting another egg sando. We ordered the katsu curry rice instead. It was pretty standard, the chicken katsu was crispy and tender, and the curry was good. There were lots of people working on laptops, and they do have WiFi, but it was a little slow. They also have a vinyl-records section on the side and definitely give off a strong design-work / creative-crowd vibe. The ambiance overall is really nice. They had discounted pastries (probably day-old), and we tried one. It was still really good. Overall, a great space with good food and a nice vibe. If you're looking to have a moment of zen crossed with a hipster culture space to socialize plus a beverage or light eat, then Osmo x Marusan (a.k.a. the former Café Osmo) might be what you're looking for. Although it has a Rue Sherbrooke Ouest address, you really enter through a setback doorway off Rue Clark behind the startup incubator Notman House, owned by the Osmo Foundation. Found the place reminiscent of Billyburg late '90s/early '00s, where a neglected nook was reinvented as a café with select vinyl offering and dj booth, especially given their use of the small green back courtyard for seating. The interior structure had a brutalist/industrial look, but everything gelled to create a place easy to connect. Sitting with my family in out back, the time seemed disproportionate (especially considering the light level of customers) for the pager to signal my Match Oat Latte was ready. The large "PAUSE" metal sculpture viewable from the garden, however, set the moment. The late summer weather was perfect and, when it arrived, that Latte was a good afternoon refreshment. From what I saw, I'd recommend stopping by, especially if you'd in the high-rise downtown but would like a nearby retreat to escape the hullabaloo. read more

I came here while I was visiting Montréal and it was a great spot to work on my laptop, lots of university students working away. I will say, the wifi only lasts 2 hours before you're booted off. But if you just need a place to quickly get some work done or enjoy the cool atmosphere, it's totally great for that. I tried their iced Cortado and egg sando and it was soooo delicious. Guess I needed a taste of my prior Japan trip when visiting Montreal, because as soon as I saw the Japanese style egg salad sandwhich on the menu I knew I needed that for lunch. It was delicious, and importantly not too mayo-y and not too sweet (so not in tamago egg style). We tried this place since it was close to our hotel. This is Japanese cafe and they had famous egg sandwich, which has half-soft fried boiled egg between Japanese white bread. It was around $12 and was delicious! The fries egg was crispy outside and creamy inside and was amazing. We loved it! We went in the morning and the server informed us that this egg sandwich was only available from 11am when they start lunch time. They also said this egg sandwich normally sells out around 2pm. Since we went on a week day, they still had it when we went around 2:30-3pm. They make the sandwich as you order, so it was warm when we received it. If you get a chance to visit, I definitely recommend you to try this Japanese warm egg sandwich! read more

Great place to come if you're looking for a nice study spot and great drinks! Hojicha latte and regular latte were both made extremely well. Hojicha latte was one of the best ones I've had in a long time. We did also order the katsu and egg sandos. I wasn't the biggest fan of either with both of them having a TON of pepper and salt thrown on top. A little bit is always great but it was practically soaking in it. Came here around 11:30 AM on Friday September 20th. I have tried the Marusan restaurant located inside the Time Out Market at Eaton Centre and really enjoyed the classic Japanese curries. This location offers more variety and doubles a coffee/study shop. The location is easy to access however being downtown there is only paid street parking. The restaurant is sort of underground but has great sky lights, a small terrace and plenty of seating. There are large communal style tables in the middle and smaller tables for 2 on the sides. When we arrived though most spots were taken and filled with students studying or browsing on their laptops. This would not be ideal for families or larger groups. We got the pork katsu curry dish and a chicken sandwich - both were amazing, very flavorful, decently priced and filling. If you are looking for comfort food, this is the perfect lunch spot. Food is fresh and appears made to order. Service was prompt, overall vibe and ambiance is really cool. This is definitely a unique spot. read more

Wow, this popular coffee shop filled with locals was hidden between two buildings and had an awesome karaage (Japanese fried chicken) sandwich that was juicy cooked to perfection. It was also well spiced with a hint of occasional heat. My wife had the tamago (egg) sandwich and it was just as good. One of the coolest cafes i've ever been to and their matcha latte was good as well! Their overall branding and aesthetic is so visually pleasing. On top of a cafe, they also sell vinyl and have a live DJ playing. Lots of open space and tables so perfect for those who might want to go to focus or work. I just felt like I could sit there and vibe for hours - definitely one of the most memorable spots on my trip to Montreal. The have a large seating area inside with a good working area for those with laptops. The dj turntable area is very cool and the outside is a nice courtyard to also enjoy. The food is amazing. If you are in Montreal, cafe Osmo is a must! This is the cutest little coffee and sandwich/lunch spot located in a cute little "bunker" style with lots of communal tables and individual spots. If you come here on any given day, you'll see tons of students working on their laptops and friends catching up over some delicious bites and coffee. The ambiance is absolutely delightful - they even have a cute little DJ booth and the whole vibe of the place is a cute little dystopian world with silver metal accents and jungle vibes. The coffee is great and fresh and unlike most cafes that serve hot food, this place does it right. The sandos are delicious and unique - I've had the karaage one and the karaage in it is actually fresher and crispier than actual izakayas. I've tried the egg one as well and it features a scotch egg within a sandwich, and the hollandaise/mayo mix is quite tasty, although heavy. I love this café. Beautiful open layout with lots of natural light, a various thetic interior. Great Asian drinks (e.g., hojicha latte, sencha, matcha...), both hot and cold, both tea and coffee, and excellent food as well. Great spot for lunch or as a café. The only two things are that it might be hard to find a seat since it's can sometimes be busy there, and it can be a little loud if you're sitting next to the speaker. This cafe was simply divine and was a great start to my Montreal trip! It is the perfect cafe to either get some work done or to catch up with friends. There is plenty of seating but they also fill up quickly! Turnover for seats is decent, as some people are there to study/work. Thankfully, I got a seat in the corner with an outlet, which was perfect for people watching as well as enjoying my book as I sipped my on hojicha latte. I normally don't go for hot drinks but this one hit the spot with its high quality flavor of hojicha. I also got the egg sando, which definitely could be shared with someone if you just wanted to have a snack. The bread was so soft and the egg was jammy and rich. I'm sorry to be that person, but I will be that person and say I went to Montreal with one thing and only one thing in mind: Francophilia-- and this cafe superseded my hopes and dreams. Second, the friggin coffee. Cafe awwww Yay. Got me hyped and ready to Seize dat Day. Despite all self-awareness, it was so good I got another and literally rocketed off to space & back. Third, the service. YASS queen for everyone expressing themselves in this city and taking their damm time-- we *need* this change of pace in 'Murica.
