Oscars has been our go to location while visiting. We've been here 4 times with 3 more days left on our trip. Everything we've eaten has been delicious: Guinness stew, Philly steak and cheese, steak and eggs, scrambled eggs, and seafood chowder. The staff has been great. We never return food but there's a first for everything. The burger wasn't well done, it was burned. The mashed potatoes tasted like instant and the stew like Campbell. ( no offense to Campbell) . They did not charge us without us asking and were very apologetic. Recommend trying somewhere else. read more

I wanted to enjoy Oscar's much more, but the place has serious issues, mainly with service and management. I stopped by for brunch and right from the start, I sensed that the staff was disorganized chaos. The male host, of sorts, didn't even look up as I approached, so I stood there waiting to be acknowledged. With a restaurant that was not even 1/4 full, he wanted to seat me in the middle of the room. He instead reluctantly sat me in a more appropriate corner booth. But he also had to power-trip by adding "If we get busy, I'll need to separate these tables." As if, pal. Then I was totally ignored by the server for quite some time, who seemed totally frazzled handling three tables. I ordered the Pulled Pork Eggs Benedict and the 2-for1 special on select cocktails. In spite of having two drinks, there was minimal if any alcohol in them. Zero buzz. I had also requested a still water, which never arrived, and I had to re-request. One big annoyance is when servers fail to check in with the customer (never happened), and you have to practically set off a flare to get their attention. Since we were a little early to check into our Airbnb, we decided to get some food from here since it was just across the street. This restaurant has a lot of good options for dinner, but not as many choices for lunch. We sat towards the window and there was a fake animal with horns on it by the windowsill. The menus were inside record album covers, which was pretty neat. We shared an open faced chicken sandwich, chicken curry, the soup of the day, sweet potato fries, a fruit salad, and Oscar's cheesey chicken lasagne. Everything came out all at once and was nicely represented. Service was also very prompt and professional. The chicken sandwich was really tasty and so were the fries. I also liked the lasagne, but didn't eat too much of it for some reason. The curry and fruit salad was just okay. The cream of green veggies soup and bread was my least favorite item. The decor inside is pretty cool! Very "homey". A little confusing whether you order at the bar or table for a meal (it's at the tables) The staff were very friendly and quick. The food was delicious and fairly priced. I recommend the warm goat cheese salad if you are a fan of goat cheese! We ended up at Oscars as a resort a group of friends and I were hungry and desperate for food so we walked in. The places has a quirky cafe vibe to it with live music dimmed lighting and a few random book shelves and a bar. Upon entering I could tell this experience was going to lackluster because there was no true hostess stand and instead there was a please wait to be seated sign. It then took a good 5-10 mins before anyone approached us and when we were apparently the only table available was "reserved for the band" It then took another 15-20 mins for someone to even take our order and when they did arrive we were to they ran out of chicken wings about 5 mins ago. Oh really so perhaps had you taken our order 20 mins ago we could have our order? Shrugs anyway.... plan B was an order of mussels for myself and the seafood chowder. Another tablemate got the chowder also and others ordered a burger and the gnocchi. Now normally when you wait for your food it's because it's really good.....WRONG... we waited for less then mediocre food it was bland. One of my friends even had a burnt burger in which he informed the waiter only to have a lame excuse of yes well we've had complaints before that it was too pink. So basically it's a sorry excuse for your cook has inconsistency issues and can't cook? They offered him a free drink on the house really? For myself and a friend our chowder was also lackluster a slight bit of Smoked fish and mostly cream. I also ordered mussels whose broth was basically the chowder I had with less flavor. The bf and other friend has the gnocchi which was okay the bread that came with it was pretty good. Oscars had a decent drinks selection. With many beers on draught. The music was good, eclectic mix of rnb, indie and rock. The food is just ok. I got chicken wings which had way too much tomatoey sauce on them. You couldn't actually taste the chicken. My partner had bruscheta with chorizo and was a big portion. The bread was soggy though. Facing on to Smithfield Square, Oscars' very unassuming front belies its very quirky and warm interior. The decor is a real hodgepodge of furniture, you could be sitting in anything from cinema seating to a barber's chair (with plenty of armchairs, window seats and couches in-between). There is also an extensive and equally random assortment of books for anybody looking to while away some time. I really like the atmosphere in Oscars, I was here on a Thursday evening and the mood was really relaxed. There was some background music playing in the background, but just at the right level to help the mood but not interfere with conversation. I guess would describe the food style here as "gastropub" with dishes such as black pudding crostini, tempura cod and trio of bangers and mash. I got the bangers and mash, it was a very generous serving and the three different types of sausages were really good. Most of the mains were around the €13 mark. For dessert I got a double chocolate chip cookie with vanilla ice-cream (€5), it was really well presented with a beautiful caramel sauce. The cookie was delicious and had the perfect gooey texture, my only comment would be that the serving was on the small side. Aside from the food there is a full bar menu available too. With the relaxed atmosphere and comfortable surroundings I could easily see myself spending an night here with a few drinks and a group of mates. But, Oscars has also positioned itself as a café and has a breakfast and lunch menu too. I have not been here during the day so I am not sure how well it works as a lunch venue, however, the gourmet sandwiches do sound lovely. This is a surprising spot. From the outside, it looks like a fairly generic enough cafe / bar, but the over-used adage 'never judge a book by it's cover' is more than valid in this case. Inside, you step into a bygone era. A wood / chrome bar, heavy antique furniture, and quirky decor fill the place. (you can take your pic between sitting in the snug, on a dentist chair, or in a row of old cinema seats) From all accounts they do excellent coffee (the accounts of my accomplice), and not so bad tea. I can't vouch for the food just yet, but plan to return and check it out. They do lots of really nice deals and events too, like Cashtag Mondays - if you retweet one of their tweets, you get 25% off your food and drink bill. My favourite permanent fixture though, is €5 for a Bombay Sapphire G&T - bargain! Definitely a great spot for those living in the D7 area. read more

Will definitely be returning to Oscars! I'd been there twice for lunch but this was my first time there for an evening meal and I absolutely loved it. It was very busy and we were afraid it would be too loud to chat but the waiter sat us in a little booth so we were nicely tucked away. The chicken burger was amazing, the chicken was so fresh succulent. Big chunky chips were also A1. This is my local and I like popping by for some drinks and food. They have amazingly tasty chicken wings and the serving is so big that usually I end up sharing with a friend as a starter. They have gluten free beer and food (although the food is not prepared in a gluten free environment). The decor is mixed and there's always something new to look at or why not borow a book to read while having a drink. Staff is friendly and welcoming - always giving a great service with a genuine smile. From the outside, it looks like it has the personality of a chain-hotel bar. Walk inside, however, and it's actually a really funky bar with an eclectic retro feel, including a piano I've never seen anyone play. They also have a heated outdoor patio with blankets which is perfect for those crisp autumn evenings. The beers on tap are mostly your average macrobrews, but there are some decent bottled options. I've been here for dinner and brunch, and am mixed about how I feel about this place. We ordered the goat's cheese salad, which came with an entire wheel of cheese (not complaining, but they definitely could have thrown in a few more leaves to round out the dish); the bacon cheese burger, which has a double patty; and the mussels with chunky rosemary fries. Everything was good! Downfalls: the service could use some polishing. We struggled to flag anyone down to ask for menus, order drinks, order food, etc. We also ordered an extra side of chips but it took so long arriving we were almost finished our meals, so just ended up cancelling it. We never saw the fries, they removed it from the bill, but no apology or explanation was offered. This was on a weekday evening when it was not that busy. Oscars is a lovely bar located in the heart of Smithfield. There is a great atmosphere about the place and a massive selection of world drinks, craft beers and lots of selections of food. To be fair I've yet to try the food however the selection of drinks is amazing. Drinks I didn't even know existed like elderflower kopperberg and cloudberry kopperberg (which I had to google because I had no idea what a cloudberry is) Along with this the atmosphere is excellent and if you're heading to the lighthouse for a flick and you arrive early id advise you to pop in for a drink. Also the staff are very polite and nice! Having spoken to various members of the staff I've yet to have a rude encounter or see anyone have a customer service issue!! read more

Oscars is a great spot for pre or post cinema drinks, and like other reviewers mention, the choice of seats and unusual furnishings lend a nice vibe to the place. The other half and I visited this morning to check out their breakfast options. Not overly busy, we had a choice of a couple of seats immediately. He had the Full Irish, I had Eggs Florentine and a coffee. The breakfast items are good value, the staff and music unobtrusive, and water comes by the pint. My verdict? Good for a hungover brunch, but if you're in D7 for fancy eggs, there are far superior options, even if you do have to wait for a table and pay a bit more. read more

I really like this place. The surroundings are pleasant and quirky. Staff are very friendly and welcoming for the most part. A nice alternative to the more traditional pubs in the area. I have never had any food so I cannot comment on that. Yet! My biggest gripe with this place is their God damned fridges not being at the right temperature. A few weeks back I was here and ordered Veltin Pilsner. It's in a bottle so comes from the fridge. The beer was not cold enough. I like this beer and I just asked for a glass of ice to cool it which as any beer drinker knows this is not appropriate behaviour. But like most Irish people, I don't like to cause a fuss whilst in company in a pub. I drank 2 or 3 of these and each time the temperature did not improve so I just kept asking for ice. I presumed they had maybe just stocked up the fridge with these beers which would explain why these were not cold enough. Either way, it's not acceptable to serve beer from a fridge that is not cold enough, especially at these prices. So I was here on Sunday, and presuming that my previous experience was just a once off I again ordered a bottle of Veltin. It arrived and was NOT cold enough. AGAIN! My boyfriend is Brazilian and doesn't suffer from Irish politeness syndrome and insisted I sent it back especially as this had happened before. I called over one of the serving staff and told her it was not cold enough and could she get me another one. She came back saying the fridges are at a certain temperature and that any other bottle is going to be the same temperature. She offered to get ice or to choose something else. I chose something else. I ordered a Tiger as it was on draft and would be significantly colder. Then she disappeared. A few minutes had passed and I had to approach another staff member about my missing Tiger. It had been sitting on the bar and the girl was no where to be found. She probably went on a break or something and listen that is grand, we forget things. It's fine. I'm sure it was a busy weekend for these guys but as a result of all this fapping about I was sitting with no drink for about 15 minutes whilst my boyfriend was enjoying his. It also means we will be out of sync with our round which is very important to us Irish. Lads, PLEASE sort out your fridges. I want to come back and drink what I like, not what I have to order instead due to your fridges not being at the correct temperature. read more

There wine from Chile wasn't too amazing but your not breaking the bank with their prices! Didn't have food here but it looked delish from other tables! Standing waiting at a bar while staff play around with marking receipts and doing paperwork isn't very customer focused. Went to Oscars after hearing some great reviews from a close friend, and was relatively pleased with the experience. Interior is quite classy, with the golden backlighting at the bar being very 1930s glam. There are also little snugs in every corner, to have a few quite drinks with friends, or maybe have a coffee and catch up on some reading. It also has it's quirks - a barbershop's chair sits rather comfortably to one side, and it has heating under the benches by the windows; I was rather overly excited about the latter. As for food, tried the evening menu, and selection was good. They only had three vegetarian options though: goats cheese salad, curry and stir fried egg noodles, so wasn't a great selection to choose from. My friend had the fish and chips, which must be the most popular dish on their menu, as quite a few people were eating it. Dish was presented on a circular slate, with two dips, pail of chips and battered fish. I can safely say that the slate was cleared extremely quickly, and would definitely recommend this dish to people if they decide to drop in. Going back to the vegetarian options, I had the stir fried egg noodles, and God forgive me for saying this, but it was very unpleasant. It tasted exclusively of salt. I couldn't find a single substantial vegetable. Every so often I would catch a glimpse of something that was green but all I could taste was salt and the squelch of grease between my teeth. I had a few bites, and ended up feeling sick, and so could not eat the rest. I don't know whether it was re-heated or what, but I would bet money on it, that no new vegetables were chopped and cooked for that plate. Having said that, I think that dish was one of those freaks of nature - you know like a once in a lifetime aberration - so I wouldn't knock Oscars for it. So to make up for the above, some other nice things about Oscars.... In and of itself, the staff are so down to earth. Walking in I felt like I was possibly in a place rather too posh for the likes of me, but I was automatically made to feel comfortable by the staff, and was highly impressed. There was also a corporate event on that night, and even though the place was quickly teeming with bejewelled ladies and bow tie bedecked young men, the organization of the staff and the service of drinks was really interesting to watch. Very professional affair altogether. Overall, happy to recommend, but steer clear of the stir fry. read more

We went to this place desperately seeking some decent late night food and we were not disappointed. We sat on the high tops by what looked like a breakfast counter. There was a female performing doing wonderful, emotional covers. She was super talented and the whole place was very laid back and loungey. We got a couple of drinks and I ordered the bangers and mash, which far exceeded my expectations. The sausages come atop a bed of mashed potatoes and they're smothered in an amazing sauce that I can only describe as a tangy BBQ sauce. Each of the sausages was slightly different, and I definitely liked two of them more than I liked the third, but the sauce and the potatoes were perfect and all of it came together really well. The service was good, very friendly, like everywhere in Ireland. I'm also a sucker for interesting bill delivery and our check came in an old cassette case. I love the quirk and the atmosphere. The size of my Full Irish was generous, especially when they subbed the pudding for an extra scrambled egg, but I wasn't wowed by the food itself. The sausages were good. The bread was blah. Maybe because the bacon wasn't cooked enough for my buds or maybe it was the service, waiting so long to get served even though it wasn't that busy, or that I didn't get my orange juice, which I know I ordered (rare thing for me as I don't do juice.) I was staying in Smithfield and this was a convenient place to eat. I was glad I tried it. I was there for brunch and had the eggs benedict florentine that had spinach on the muffin and the eggs (2 eggs, 2 muffins) and hollandaise sauce. It was very tasty and I really enjoyed it. Then, as though that wasn't enough (it definitely was), I just had to try the Bailey's cheesecake. It came with pistachio ice cream and was quite wonderful. There is indoor and outdoor seating and you seat yourself. It can be pretty crowded. the seating includes a bar, high tables, regular tables, sofas, and booths. There are books around the inside for browsing or trading and an interesting collection. The downside is the service. It took awhile to get a menu and order. The food came out pretty quick after ordering but hard to get anyone's attention for the check-ended up going up to the counter to pay. read more
