Come hungry. I say this for two reasons. First, there are tons of options on the menu here and you may have a hard time deciding. Second, this is some of the best Texas home cooking that you'll have.
The truth is that Texas is full of these type of places that have steaks, burgers, and assorted fried options. Some of these places are good. Some are making solely on being quaint and preying on out of town tourists by serving up whatever Sam's Club and Sysco sell. The Oscar Store is the standard by which everyplace else should be judged. And the competition will be found lacking.
Food. Let's talk about it, because there's a lot of it. While trying this place early Friday evening with one of my usual dining companions, we decided to over order so as to try a variety of options. We ended up sharing three appetizers. The fried mushrooms and fried pickle chips ended up getting devoured pretty quickly. We also liked the chips and salsa. Every Texas restaurant should have chips and salsa and the Oscar Store does a good job with these, but you should focus on the fried appetizers. My sirloin steak was superb. Not in the five star prime steakhouse sense, but in the sense of comfort food and/or food cooked on the grill. Perfectly seasoned, clearly grilled, and cooked to order. The fries I had with my steak were homemade, although I prefer mine a bit crispier. The onion rings were remarkable. I don't normally like thicker onion rings, but these were still crispy and retained their coating. My dining companion raved about her chicken fried steak, which I also tasted. I would agree with her belief that it may be one of the best in Texas. The meat was tender; the breading was on point; and the gravy was excellent. She also enjoyed her fried okra and home fries. We split a peach cobbler for dessert. This may have been the most underwhelming part of our meal, but we might also attribute it to both of us being past the point of comfortably full. In all disclosure, both of us prefer the pie style crust for cobbler and this was closer to a cake style crust. The biggest takeaway from our dinner was that, even though we were beyond full, zero indigestion or greasy taste for either of us. The folks at the Oscar Store clearly know how to fry.
I'd be remiss if I didn't mention the service. Our waitress was friendly and knowledgeable enough about the menu to steer us toward and away from different options. She also kept drinks refilled and even offered to go packaging. The real surprise was her bringing a second bowl for us to split the cobbler. And finally, the gentleman at the cash register (possibly the owner?) was friendly.
One other thing bears mentioning. The prices are more than reasonable, especially considering the quantity and quality of food as well as the service and atmosphere.
This place is definitely in my dining rotation and will be a great place to take friends visiting from out of state. read more
