Osake has some really delicious rolls and the martini prawns really are worthy of all the hype. My go to rolls are the Dynamite Roll, Utah Roll and Marilyn Monroll....The service is hit or miss. Gary Chu can be a little grumpy behind the bar but he does know is sushi. There are some servers that I absolutely adore and hug us when we come in and then there are the grouches. So all in all, the sushi is delicious and you won't be disappointed. read more

Went here last Friday evening with a large party. Our server Jessica was amazing! She was even training someone. She was super friendly and always had a smile. We ate in the sushi area and everyone enjoyed the food. I even caught a rice ball from 10 feet away...holy moley! Haven't been to Osake in quite a while, was really looking forward to a delicious meal. We felt rushed, the wait staff tried to take our dishes before we were done. The family next to us we're playing chopsticks on their glasses for 15 minutes. My friend still had half a glass of beer left when we were asked by the waitress to leave because they had people waiting. That was a first for us. Will not go there again. I love Osake, my favorite restaurant in Santa Rosa and possibly the best sushi restaurant in the North Bay. Gary Chu is a great host, and makes the experience fun with his antics and leaves you in awe as you watch him create his dishes. Best recommendation I can give if you have extra cash is to sit at the sushi bar and ask Gary to make you whatever he wants. He either asks you what kind of dish you'd like or he will just make whatever he feels like, but you'll never be disappointed. Best roll I've ever tried, the Utah roll, isn't on the menu but it comes with a very high recommendation. But my favorite dish is the Yellowtail Carpaccio. One of the most delicious dishes I've ever tried, would definitely be my last meal if I was ever on death row. Add a large bottle of Sapporo and a box of the Pretty Boy Sake and it turns out to what could be the perfect dinner. Osake is a bit pricey, I took a date there a few months back and spent over $140 after tip, but it was well worth it. Love the place, and Miko the hostess is awesome, she always remembers me even when I went almost six months without visiting. Yet again it was my night off, I was hungry and craving the essence of sushi perspiring in my mouth. I had heard before (since I am a taxi driver) that Osake was the place to go for great sushi. And I wasn't let down! I started off with their Alaskan/California rolls, and they where AMAZING, and I knew right away that if I could find a better sushi it would be hard to find. Not only that the ginger was tasteful and robust, not broken down, and the wasabi was so strong that I was reminded of the first time that I had horseradish as a kid with the stinging going up my nose like the good stuff. Then when I was done with that I had still not been completely full so I looked and saw a spicy mango Yellow-tail roll. I HAD TO HAVE IT, and my gosh I am sure glad that I did because the medley of flavors and spices was just so right that I was in aw. 5 stars since this is by far the best (though I haven't had much sushi) that I have come to find in this town of Santa Rosa. read more

Delicious! Some of the reviews on here are pretty funny. I love coming here with my family. Very relaxing. They give you hot wash cloths before your meal to wipe your hands which is a pretty cool touch. The Utah roll is UNBELIEVABLE. It's pricey but if you cant afford it, then dont go. I have eaten at a lot of sushi of the years. This place never disappoints. I feel like the fish here is always fresh, and the rolls are unique and taste amazing! I love the poke bowl. Absolutely amazing!! The fish is so fresh, tasty, and like nothing you have ever had before. I highly recommend the Utah Roll with Marilyn Sauce, Martini Prawns (the best!!), The Naked Lori Roll, Dynamite Roll. Let me start by saying that I'm a regular, I love the sushi! But I think last night was my last! I've let Gary know several times already, but it seems he doesn't care what his customers think! The Mr. Ponytail waiter is the worst waiter I've encountered in my life; he forgets things, he's rude, not attentive at all! Last night we had a party of 11, brought 3 bottles of wine, 2 were magnums, got charged $80 for corkage fee and the waiter didn't even had the decency to fill our glasses, EVER!! It just makes me mad because in a party of 6 or more, the waiter gets automatic tip, which he didn't deserve one dime of it! I personally would of given the busboy all the tip! I'm sad to say, but I'm sure there is other places that serve the same, if not better sushi, and with a hell of a lot better service! Hope Gary realizes what's going on with the front house service, by that I mean Mr. Ponytail, and fixes this problem. read more

Disappointing. After reading the positive reviews, my husband and I were expecting much more from this high priced restaurant. We have eaten in dozens of sushi bars over the years and being new residents of Santa Rosa, were hoping to find a place we would frequent often. I wanted to leave as soon as we walked in because my plan was to sit at a sushi bar. However, this one has a huge TV behind the bar and it was showing sports. In a sushi bar? Wrong! So, we opted for a table. This place is too American in style with a menu for all tastes. Not exactly what we wanted. Where was that Japanese transporting experience? Where were the hot hand towels? Our hopes were up when we tasted the California rolls. However, the spider roll ruined the evening for us. Just one bite revealed that the oil was rancid. Inexcusable. Once that taste is in your mouth, you can't forget it. Of course, our server immediately cleared that plate and we weren't charged but the tuna roll that we chose to replace it was kind of rubbery. The service was efficient but not exactly friendly, which is what we have happily come to expect in Santa Rosa. We loved our old haunt in San Rafael where the mixed clientele including blue collar workers and families was greeted with warmth and fed fantastic choices at reasonable prices at the beautiful arge sushi bar. It was a great experience. Osake is clearly not our place. We would like to find a more authentic sushi bar in the area. However, not sure I can trust the Yelp comments after this trial. read more

Where to start.. I made a reservation for 6:30pm. By about 6:45pm, I walked up to the hostess and asked how much longer it would be. Little did she know I didn't walk away as far as she had thought. I heard her ask the owner and I very clearly heard him say, "Let them wait". No apologies, no free glass of ice tea, nothing. At 7:00pm we sat down. We literally experienced the worst service I have had in a long time. I had to get up three, yes three different times to find the waitress. I was with clients and extremely embarrassed. We had a great time at Osake last night. The staff was friendly and accommodating to the 8 of us. I had to change my reservation about 3 times and they were very patient and kind about it. Everyone seemed to enjoy their food. I went pretty light with a New York roll and a banana tempura dessert with vanilla ice cream drizzled with caramel and topped nuts is not to be missed! I've had their spicey tuna in the past which is a very generous roll along with a tempura roll and a spicey prawn roll, all very good and fresh tasting. I like the atmosphere in the restaurant as well, it's spacious and comfortable. The interior however is dated and just not appealing. The big fish tank in the front is kind of obtrusive and I don't like watching large fish clean the bottom the tank before I eat. Our waitress went out of her way to help us divvy our check and tallied everyone individually for us. Really great! read more

My first time at Osake and it was a very busy Friday night. It can get noisy as there are likely to be families there on the weekends. The four of us had a real cross section of the menu. The Halibut sashimi was acceptable, but the softshell crab was too heavily fried and ended up over powering the delicate nature of the dish. The calamari appetizer was very simply done and of a decent quality. Not very imaginative but with all the rolls on the menu, sometimes a few simple dishes are a good balance. We had an assortment of rolls, Philadelphia, Eel, etc. Fresh is what you would expect at a restaurant as opposed to Safeway, but I found most of the rolls lacking in some way. They didn't POP. The overall impression was a B at best. For the money, it may be a few more miles down the road but Hanna Sushi is another level altogether. read more

If you're vegetarian don't bother entertaining thoughts of eating here. You will not be entertained.. The only things we could order proved to be tasteless and utterly disgusting. The vegetable tempura uses no eggs but its greasy and all the vegetables taste the same. Even the dinner salads use wilted head lettuce which seemed like it had been drying for hours. This establishment WAS my favorite local sushi restaurant. Today for the first time I ordered my favorite rolls to go & my husband went out to pick them up. This was to be my first meal after delivering our baby....Sushi after a long awaited 9 months! Upon returning & opening this long awaited meal, we discovered for a $60 order we were given 3 tiny packets of wasabi! That was enough for me alone. I called the restaurant to express my dismay & was handed around to 3 different people to explain my disappointment. The 2nd employee asked me what I'd like for her to do & I returned w/the question of what would she like to do? The 3rd person I was handed off to was Gary Chu himself, he was unsympathetic & defensive about the situation. He said next time ask for more & defended the quality of these tiny packets dispersed. I had already explained that this was my first meal after delivering my baby & that they always serve a sufficient amount in our numerous visits to his restaurant....How were we to know that we would need to unpack their tidily wrapped package to double check the order? I enjoy coming here. Gary, the head sushi chef is great. It's hard to get a seat at the bar sometimed because of how popular Gary is with his customers. The sushi rolls are delicious. Salmon is fresh. Tuna is fresh. You can tell it's not from Costco or some other box store. I like the lamb chops. Give it a try sometime. The martini prawns are so good, definitely a great way to start dinner. The ambiance is nice, nice place for a date or taking the patents out for a nice meal. The hostess is fantastic. Alright, to all you sushi nazi's out there, this is not traditional japanese cuisine. So once you can let that go, you can enjoy Gary's great creations of food. I have been going here forever now and always leave happy. Sit at the bar if you do go and strike up a conversation with the sushi chef, Mr. Chu. He is the reason I go in at least once a week. There are some awesome things that aren't on his menu, but he would love to make. I'd highly suggest getting a fire cracker roll (spicy tuna roll that has been seared to crispy golden brown and delicious and then cut, and topped with more spicy tuna) or another favorite of mine has to be the butterfish sashimi that he quickly grills and tops with a sweet sauce and shiso leaves. I have been here several times and each time I leave feeling like I have been ripped-off. I have only ordered sushi and have tried none of the other Asian fusion dishes they offer (they don't appeal to me). For the higher prices they charge, the sushi is simply not that good. If you don't like paying a lot of money for sushi - do not come here. If you do not mind paying money for quality sushi - do not come here. Either way you can get much better service and food quality at other sushi restaurants in the area for whatever your price point is. The décor and ambiance has an old, tired feel from the 1980s. I usually sit at the counter because the service is usually faster there, but there is one huge drawback to sitting there...listening to the owner's laugh...which is sssoooo annoying. He is usually working behind the counter and is always engaged in incessant loud conversations with the customers sitting at the counter. I have no objection to engaging with the customers, but take it down a notch. read more

The location is quite noisy and the tables are so close together that we heard (somewhat awkward) table talk on all sides through our meal. The food, though, was tasty, filling, and exactly what we were craving for our date night out. I got decent pours of my wine and ordered veggie sushi- the cucumber, avocado, and shitake rolls. I also got an order of enari, which was the only disappointment of the night; the tofu pocket wasn't filled full enough so the small wad of rice kept falling out, but it was still delicious. My husband got two orders of "real" sushi rolls and loved it, I think the rainbow and one other one. Although I have always gotten friendly and prompt service from all the women, it is a special treat to sit at the sushi bar and listen to Gary talk and joke with regulars. Fish tank is great too as is the black and white photograph of Japanese dishes behind it; why is it hidden and not up front instead of the insipid prints?
