This is the best place in town. Our waiter is always fun and friendly. We eat here once a month and he remembers what we like. The two stars is just for the sushi, it wasn't good at all but I love any kind of sushi. The service is what turned me off the most. We were a table of 3 and we were seated and only given two menus. Also, there were not enough napkins and chopsticks on the table. What are 3 people supposed to do with 3 chopsticks? The server did not say one word to us during the entire meal. Our whole dining expierience was terrible to say the least. We waited literally an hour for our rolls to come out. The tempura was not warm and it tasting like the rolls were sitting in the window, forgotten. I do have to give them credit to the presentation of the rools were beautiful, made me feel as if I were fine dining, but the service was not up to par. Really tasty food, I enjoy coming to this place as often as my budget will allow, as you know Sushi is expensive. I find the people are nice. The owner Gary, is usually making the sushi and entertaining the guests at the bar. The food is really tasty, I'm a huge fan of their house dressing, their martini prawns, spicy poke salad, and their Utah roll, which is no longer on their menu but they are always happy to make it for you. The only thing that is slacking and its only if its busy or if your in the back is water service, I drink a lot of water and usually I'm waiting for my next fill up. read more

We tried Osake take-out last night for the first time. I always hear great reviews of this restaurant from most everyone I know. Yes, the restaurant is beautiful and Gary Chu himself is behind the sushi bar preparing your meal. I thought the special roll menu didn't offer as many choices as Sushi to Dai For or JoJo's, but the sushi we did take home was great. I would rather go to JoJo's, but this was nice for a change. Over the last 10 years or so, the menu has pretty much remained the same and all but the costs just keep going up and up.. The quality of the food is ok but the service seems to have been spiraling down hill. One night I was there and there was a small group of about six celebrating a birthday for a young lady. Some 45 minutes after they ordered, the entire table - except for the birthday girl had their plates. They waited and waited until finally one of them actually got up to speak with the hostess. Stopped in without a res on a busy Friday night. We were told it would be 15-20 minute wait but we only waited about 10 minutes for two seats at the sushi bar. It was just after 7 p.m. and the place was bustling. My first thought was 'wow' this place is hopping! But I must say that we left with the feeling that we wouldn't give it a second try. Why? The hostess was overwhelmed and seemed to be serving the sushi bar as well as seating folks. We didn't get our hot tea order until halfway through our meal and then only one of us got our order. The seared ahi appetizer was just 'meh' and the fish actually tasted like some kind of chemical. The Chirashi don was just ok, though the rice was very good. The signature Spicy crunchy tuna roll was actually good. Nice that it wasn't swimming in sauce! So well done on the roll. Overall the sushi chef seemed scattered and the folks next to us didn't get their appetizer until after their meal was served. I didn't like how cluttered the part of the bar was behind the fish tank. It wasn't neat and seemed like the lunch crew left their plates behind and forgot to clean up. The service wasn't great, we asked 4 times for hot tea. The food was just so-so and the tidyness of the bar area where the grilled foods/sushi rolls were just too untidy. No one cleared our plates as we ate and the clutter just kept piling up. I think they need two hostesses, one to seat folks and work the book, and one to bar back and assist the sushi chef with orders. The fact that they comped our sake flight is why I give 2 stars and not one. I think they knew they were under staffed and things just didn't run like a restaurant that has been open as long at they have. read more

Rolls are small and too pricy for the quality I ordered rainbow roll. It i supposed to be a fish roll, yet 1 piece had avocado only the other had shrimp. Spider roll was not upto my expectation, tempura felt like it has been made in the morning and has been sitting in the fridge. Yellow tail roll had a very runny sauce. read more

This is my daughter's favorite sushi restaurant but I don't understand entirely why. It's ALWAYS busy but has a dark, laid back, subdued atmosphere nevertheless. The signature Martini Prawns are very nice but nothing to write home about (If you buy a bottle to go, please note that it is HIGHLY perishable and must be refrigerated immediately when you get home and that they may not make this entirely clear to you when you purchase it. I wasted $9.75 as a result of miscommunication). The Rainbow Roll is hardly colorful and just okay, and the Dragon Roll is more like a "Lizard Roll" instead and is really pretty sad compared to similar more artistically prepared presentations I've experience elsewhere. I easily believe the claim of other diners that the rolls are pre-prepared and kept in the kitchen until service is required. Dined there three times now and I still have the same opinion. read more

I am SO disappointed!! I haven't been for a year or two but now don't plan on going back. The dinners no longer include the miso soup, salad, and rice. You have to purchase those separately. For some Very Odd reason they are now serving their Japanese dinners with a dollop of mashed potatoes and four floweret pieces of broccoli. SINCE WHEN do you get served mashed potatoes with a Japanese meal. And the broccoli isn't even served hot. It was steamed previously and served at room temperature. So disappointed. I was so disappointed at a recent lunch. The tempura prawns looked and tasted like they had come out of a frozen food package. There were a few pieces of carrot and zucchini - no yam or onion as I have had in the past- that were thin and had very little batter on them. I used to LOVE Osake and bring guests here frequently. In the last few years, however, the portions seem smaller and the quality has gone down. For example, the green salad that used to have a variety of deep mixed greens has been replaced by nearly white iceberg lettuce. Really? For the price, I expect something more than pale lettuce. The flavors are still delicious overall, although I actually left quite unsatisfied due to the small portion size. What a disappointment. My beau and I checked this place out for dinner last night in an attempt to try something other than our usual go-to sushi place (Sushi To Dai For). When we walked in, we weren't acknowledged for a few minutes until an angry looking hostess told us to wait a minute and eventually guided us to a table. We chatted and selected the dynamite roll to share and made our own individual selections of an Alaska roll for him and an order of the hirame nigiri for me. For the amount of people in the restaurant (most of whom already had food), it took a long time to get any food at our table. My hirame and his Alaska roll came out first. The hirame was fine, but I'm used to getting bigger servings of equally good fish elsewhere. The dynamite roll came out a couple minutes later. I wasn't impressed that it was served on aluminum foil. It tasted OK, but left something to be desired. All you could really taste was the salmon and sauce. And the pieces were terribly small. After my hirame and share of the dynamite roll I was still VERY hungry. My beau offered me a bite of his Alaska roll and I was even more disappointed after that. There was barely any salmon or avocado inside, so the flavor was dominated by rice and seaweed. We were both hungry and unsatisfied. We contemplated getting another roll to share or a small plate but based on the quality and portions for the prices of items we already got, we thought it'd be better to leave hungry and grab something small to go from our favorite Vietnamese place. I've been to places where the service made up for lackluster food or portions, but the staff here doesn't seem to give a damn. The waiters all looked unhappy. Not once were we asked how the food was or even thanked for coming in. We won't be back. In fact, we were curious about Gary Chu's Chinese place but have decided to avoid it as well based on this experience. read more

Gary Chu also has his "secret" menu items that he would be delighted to make for you upon your asking and they NEVER disappoint! Highly recommend sitting at the bar for the BEST service and atmosphere. Watching the Owner/Chef Gary Chu work his culinary magic is without a doubt, amazingly entertaining. I have NEVER had anything but a delicious, beautiful and first class meal at this restaurant! This is the best sushi restaurant in the world (really!!... and I've tried them all including several highly rated sushi restaurants in Japan). The key to Osaka is to sit at the bar and let Gary Chu serve you a few "specials" which are always creative and deliriously delicious. His sushi is always the freshest and worth the extra cost he charges (usually). If you are on a budget, go to Costco Santa Rosa to pick up a 20% off card. I've been there with my husband and now 3 grown children of and on for more than 15 years and we never get tired off listening to Gary Chu's hilarious stories while watching him and his two assistants (both named Jose) serve more sushi faster than any other team.
