Came here after Yao-Kiku closed earlier than expected on New Years Eve. Fancy decor, dark and intimate atmosphere, cold room temperature. Overcooked flavorless rice used for the sushi. What a shame too, because the ingredients were the best I've had in a while. In my opinion, though, the blandness and mushiness of the rice was definitely a deal breaker. I hear the martini prawns are great, but I didn't even bother after getting through the three rolls of disaster. This place was an afterthought sort of option to begin with, so if I'm ever in the area again I won't even bother coming back. Ordered some champagne, martini prawns, and the Marilyn MonRoll. Martini prawns are delicious, great appetizer. My roll was good, huge portions. Server was very nice and was constantly refiling our water/wine glasses. The lighting was dark and it was very peaceful. There were alot of people (went on a Friday night) but no one was being obnoxiously loud. Decently priced for being known as one of the best sushi places in Santa Rosa. When you walk in their is 12 seats at a bar with screaming damn near oblivious customers stroking Mr. Chu ego, in contrast to the the quiet and beautiful dining area.( only 10 ft away ) Or original table seating was in a weird position and the seats where honestly sinking and really uncomfortable. We moved under the geisha booth and was much more at peace. Our server was sweet , friendly, helpful, and on it as far as needs go. The table was always cleaned off immediately after finishing any plate. :-) The most wonderful part of this dinner is that we managed to dodge " Mr. pony tail" considering we heard what kind of dining experience he provided and how many yelp users dinners he had ruined. Well after 15+ years as a loyal customer I decided to call it quits and take my business elsewhere. Even though the food is fresh I'm very tired of listening to Gary telling his customers that they don't spend enough money!! Even folks that eat there once a week and let him choose the dishes. What broke the straw for me was that when I ordered two orders of desserts ( caramelized figs) which wouldn't take more than 2 minutes to prepare I only received one order for two people and when I ask for the second order I was told that gary refuses to make the second one because he's to busy. Even after a second request I was told a simple NO not going to happen. Now keep in mind a loyal customer of his brings him free figs and only when that is the case gary offers them as a dessert and charges good money for them. As he once said he is to cheap to order them on a regular basis. Having been in the restaurant business for many years this is unacceptable in any which way and form. Especially since he only had a few tables to prep food for and I was even willing to wait. So for a lousy $8.- dessert he lost my future patronage. All the other staff at his restaurant are fantastic and very friendly. Anyone have any recommendations for a great sushi bar?? read more

I am editing my review. They must have read my review about the salad dressing because they changed it. It is so good now. I actually started going again regularly. It is still rolls with mayonnaise sauce but that is a type of sushi people like and I just don't. Otherwise I do like the food. read more

Went here one time because I thought it would be like Sake O in Healdsburg. I was very disappointed with this restaurant. The food was presented well but was not fresh. I've tried and tried and each time I wonder where and why I spent so much money on inconsistent lifeless service, food that is generally not very good and tastes marginally better than a fast food restaurant with rice dishes and rolls. There might be a worthy dish or two that I have had over the years however nothing has changed and I have been through and repeated many times some of the same dishes and Osake is beyond rated above its class. Overrated, outdated menu items with zero passion for taste. How could the reviews be so different? Perhaps the fried food items, the mayo based flavors and soap taste of almost every item appeal to those with low expectations? I leave with same disdain for how little relevance this food should have when there are premium choices that satisfy completely in the area and now I have finally been turned away dissatisfied for the last time. Better choices and I'd skip Osake as it should consider a complete revitalization of the menu from start to finish food bland bad and blah. Service lifeless and bothered. I'd make the drive time to better and more fulfilling establishments. read more

i only go to santa rosa to drink and eat sushi. this is the only place worth driving more than 20 miles from my apartment. fish is always fresh and delcious. if you order sake, the lady poors it into this box and it is supposed to overflow onto the plate it sits on, i think its supposed to be good luck? but i like it, its like you get extra. and i swear she always says ooops when she does it, its adorable. my favorites- utah roll, pamela andersen in the morning, marilyn monroll, martini prawns, and anything you ask gary to surprise you with gary chu is awesome, he probably doesn't know my name, since i dont get up there that often, but even after an osake sabbatical of 2 months he remembers my face, which is a plus. if you sit at the bar and cant decide on something, just tell him what you like and he will make something special for you, and it is always delish. i don't know what else to say but how much i love this place. read more

Great Sushi especially if you come often and get to know the owner Gary, (he will make you things not on the menu.) the fish is always fresh and is cut in good portions. High quality food, fresh fish. A bit pricey for what it is, in my experience--relatively small portions (but delicious!) Service is slow, but the atmosphere is nice and relaxed. A good place to get a meal (if you're not on a budget), although I think there are better sushi places in Sonoma County all things considered. Worth a try for sure! read more

Been there twice...Once with family, once 20 deep in our own room for a 28th Bday party. Each time the food and service has been outstanding! We got a bit rowdy at the celebration, and what happend? This is my favorite sushi place ever. Horizon Roll, Rainbow Roll...oh, there's one with green beans in it with tempura with a creamy wasabi sauce. Of course the Hamachi, Maguro, Sake. The food and service were terrible. First of all, I had to flag someone down to take my order. Then, upon receiving my order of shrimp yakisoba with vegetables, I found that the vegetables consisted of onions and cabbage. This was barely edible. My daughter got a seafood dish that included vegetables (there were vegetables this time), but the fish was rubbery and the sauce, supposedly sake and garlic, tasted buttery. Even the rice was dry. One must also pay for soda refills, rice, miso soup, and salad that come standard at other Japanese restaurants. I was extremely disappointed and will NEVER return, advising my friends to do the same. On a side note, I had a similar experience years ago at Gary Chu's chinese restaurant. A friend and I went here for lunch this week and I was really disappointed I remember liking the sushi here a lot than I did yesterday. I noticed that made some changes to the menu but not to the prices, they seemed a bit higher than other Japanese restaurants in the area (which is fine if they are superior and I do not believe they are). It was $58 (after tax and tip) for five standard rolls and two miso soups, for a lunch $29 a person is pretty high. The new wave roll really fell flat for me I couldn't even taste the crab, the dressing and the baby greens was all that hit my palate. My one overall theme of the meal was that it was flavorless from the miso soup to the new wave roll to my philly roll. My also seemed disappointed with her selections. Next time we will try Shogun or Sea Thai Bistro instead. read more

Osake is my favorite Japanese restaurants in Sonoma County! The food is always fresh and delicious. My favorite are the Lisa Roll and Utah Roll. This is one of the few authentic Japanese restaurants that I've been to, and I'm lucky that it's a short drive from where I live. The menu is diverse with the typical items that are found in any sushi restaurants mixed with some creative items that really make Osake stand apart from the other restaurants in this area. I've been going to Gary's Chinese restaurant in the downtown area for years and can say that I love the food here just as equally. read more

Excellent Sushi. Very expensive for Santa Rosa, but always top quality. If I were rich, I would eat here all the time. Gary (of Gary Chu's) is the owner and chef here and makes great rolls. Nigiri is fresh, but not their specialty. I like nigiri, but really enjoy the flavors of well created rolls. Gary does not dissapoint. Just too expensive to come regularly. We were quite disappointed with Osake. Everything was clean, but the decor seemed very 80s. I'm pretty sure there is a Nagel print hanging there somewhere. We sat at the bar, but did not feel like we got any special attention from the sushi chef (even we though are pretty sure it was owner Gary Chu). The much talked about shrimp appetizer was not bad. Shrimp smothered in a creamy sauce in a martini glass. Very limited selection of fish. The rolls we tried did not appear to be made with traditional sushi rice. It was quite dry and firm. We'll look elsewhere when we're ready to try sushi in the North Bay again. read more

Fresh, creative sushi dishes in addition to "must try" cooked items like the lamb chops, Lobster tempura and sashimi, and what we call " the really good soup" with wagyu beef and truffle oil. They are a bit on the pricey side, I have been spoiled by good Japanese food in The City for much less. I've been going to Osake for four years and I usually drop $100 between 2 people for teenagers that's a lot of money...
