I don't know what happened to Osaka. It use to be my favorite Sushi restaurant in Modesto. I always order the #3 combination dinner and it came out sizzling with alot of steak, onions and veggies. The last 2 times I went there, the plate was have the size, completely different steak (mabey 5 or 6 small pieces), not sizzling and 2 broccoli florets and 2 thin slices of carrot and one mushroom. Did the place get bought out in the last year or so? The vegetable tempura was greasy (dripping) and the shrimp tempura was cold and hard. Total disappointment. I even gave it another chance. I LOVE this place! One of my friends brought me to Osaka and it has been a favorite of mine since! I always get the vegetable soup....without noodles. The soup is full of broccoli, carrots, cabbage, tofu, mushrooms and the best broth ever. It's always piping hot and filling. My husband got the sushi rolls and one of the tuna rolls (forgive me for not actually knowing the names of what he got). My husband said the raw tuna was fresh and sushi grade tuna that was like butter. The sushi rolls were good too, with fresh seafood and perfectly cooked rice. This place is amazing! 5 stars, no doubt. I was looking up some new places to try in the Modesto area, and this location popped up. From the outside, I'm not gonna lie, I wasn't too sure on the place . The inside is a totally different story. Beautifully decorated, staff were extremely nice. I came during lunch, so I was able to order the teriyaki beef bento box. The bento box came with 4 California rolls, vegetable tempura, salad, rice, and of course the teriyaki beef. Everything tasted amazing!! Very flavorful , and fresh. The beef was cooked to perfection (I've tried this dish at other places and the meat is almost always over cooked and or burnt). For dessert I ordered the deep fried ice cream, which was also delicious. Overall, food and service was great! This a new go to spot for me. My boyfriend and I love sushi and since he is from this area, he suggested this place. We got here as soon as they opened. We ordered the jalapeno poppers for appetizers and it was really good. The jalapeños were big and filled with spicy tuna. You can feel the kick to it. I got the bento with tonkatsu (you have the option of chicken or pork and I went with pork) and shrimp with veggie tempura. The tonkatsu was good and huge. To my surprise, they give you 2 big pieces which I wasnt expecting. The veggie tempura was good but I wasn't a fan of the shrimp tempura. They used a different batter which isn't your typical tempura batter. I'm used to having a light yellow with crunchy around it. Their version is medium yellow with no crunchy and it was a little overcooked. I have plenty of leftovers in the end. He ordered lava roll which was also pretty good. It wasn't spicy at all. And this is coming from someone who has a low tolerance in spicy food. The staff were very nice and made sure to check up on you a lot. The price was reasonable. Disappointed there were bugs in are food at first I didn't think anything thought it was just black specks from the chicken but kept finding them and finally noticed they had wings and there were several in my food and the chicken wasn't fully cooked. This was my first time trying sushi and I gotta say... it was pretty good! Unfortunately the bitterness from the staff was far more pungent than the pleasant taste of the sushi. I came here with co-workers and really enjoyed the fresh tasting salmon bento box I ordered. The only negative I experienced was the not-so fresh salad, the dressing tasted old. The restaurant itself was clean and bright. They ate very busy during lunch, the server forgot to bring something we asked for but other than that service was good. The fish was not fresh, the rice was soggy, the spicy Mayo had a weird tang to it. Overall the sushi was gross. The chicken teriyaki was good, but again the rice was soggy and not cooked well. The tempura was good as well as the salad. All in all a bad experience. read more

I love the food at Osaka, but am a long time customer who has been loyal for many many years, tipping well, returning with friends, and enjoying and being pleased with the food. But, today I am disturbed. This is the reason.... I drove across town to arrive for a late lunch , hungry after medical appointments but willing to drive a bit faster to get to the restaurant before the end of lunch at 2:30pm. That is the closing time and I have arrived many times ( note under the former owners not the newest owner) to be seated and treated with grace and able to order before 2:30pm. But TODAY, August 3, 2021 I was told that the kitchen does not take orders at 2:15 and they were closed. The reason I am upset is that I asked the hostess to get the owner and she left and went to the counter space talking to a man who was hidden. I could hear the voices. I am not sure if this is the owner or the manager on duty. Instead of the man coming out to talk to me, he waved the girls to deal with the perceived problem. He did not want to face me directly. I was not a rude customer but a loyal customer wanting to ask why the restaurant was not taking my order and seating me since I arrived before the closing time of 2:30pm. I walked out disgusted and drove down the street to the competitor KIMOTO SAKE AND SUSHI on MC HENRY AT THE SAFEWAY STORE parking lot/ BRIGGSMORE who opened the door, said we are closing soon but can take your order ( please will you be quick) and this manager seated me. The competitor who treated me understanding my dire need for lunch was gracious and hospitable. He did not turn me away at 2:25pm. He took my quick order, kitchen served meal in ten minutes. We ate and were out by 3pm so the kitchen staff could rest before evening time. And, I was nurished with a delicious bento box if not better than OSAKA. I am upset enough to turn my business over, bring my clients to the competitor because of OSAKA's in hospitable customer service. SHAME ON THEM. CLOSING TIME IS 2:30pm not 2:15pm read more

This is my review from my visit 2 weeks ago. I received the most terrible service from this place. Mind you, I have been coming here for awhile but I had never been offended or disrespected like I did. I had ordered the Bento box for my toddler. I was told there is no kids menu and that was the next best option. I ordered the salmon. My toddler didn't like it. I had informed my waiter the issue as my son didn't like it. I took a bite and it was very dry. ANYWAYS, The waiter returned it. The manager, Chloe came to the table and gave me the most attitude. Questioning me why I returned it and it was a waist of food. She said that this wasn't her problem, that I am the parent and it's MY problem, and that I should eat it instead of waisting it. I had asked who the owner was and she said " it doesn't matter they aren't here." Luckily, I was helped by Jessica the other manager, she handled the situation with professionalism and care. Now, I was reading some of these complaints on here and I see that the server or manager will give suggestions of something else if customer isn't happy with their order. Well, Chloe never did that. Instead she was defensive and rude. Mind you, I had already ordered a total of $100 worth of food. She didn't need to be nasty about a $15 bento box, or whatever the price is of your bento box. I just know that Chloe needs to be retrained and reminded that as a manger, it is mandatory to handle issues and situations with giving the best customer service. Please retrain her if she is kept as manager. As for Jessica, she was wonderful. And because of Jessica, I am willing to continue to be a paying customer. read more

My family and I have been going to Osaka for years. With COVID we have been supporting our favorite restaurants by ordering pick up. The past few time we have ordered from Osaka it has become obvious that they don't care about the take out orders nearly as much as dine in(which shouldn't even be happening right now because of COVID, but I guess they don't care about that). I have been told to my face that they are more worried about the dine in customers. I arrived today a little after what time they told me that the food would be ready, but then I had to wait over a half hour before getting my food. After today I will officially finding a new Japanese restaurant that cares about ALL of its customers. read more

They were very nice and service was pleasant. One of the rolls was really good, one we did not care for very much, and one was not what we ordered. We think we are spoiled by the place behind the old Marie Calendars on Sylvan. (S.G.) Heard back from this restaurant, asked if I let servers know my order was wrong.. since it was a to-go order and they brought it out to my car due to the covid situation I got I got to the house that I had bought sushi for and we found out the order was wrong there. At that point not driving back because the order was wrong just won't go back due to not having care in the first place. Hadn't been to Osaka in a few years but decided to go with family about a week or two ago for dinner and they absolutely did not disappoint!!! I feel like the food just keeps getting better and better, unlike some other sushi places in town. We got tons of food, all of it was SOOOOO good, and service was spot on! Our favorites of the evening were the Golden Phoenix roll and the Ika Karaage (fried squid body and tentacles) it was so tasty that I've been day dreaming about it ever since we went! I usually come here for lunch and love it. Today I called promptly at twelve when they opened to order a firecracker roll and shrimp tempura. They told me there would be a 15 minute wait which I assumed would be so they could make the food. I arrived and waited excitedly for my freshly made sushi and tempura. When I opened up my food to eat, the fried red snapper on the inside tasted like it had been left out all night. The tempura inside the roll itself consisted of tail ends of the shrimp and ended up having shells through out. Then the tempura wasn't even warm and also seemed like it had been from last nights batch. I was very disappointed and don't know if I want to spend anymore money on a place that didn't deliver the results it had previously. It really seemed as though they had used the food from last night and served it this morning. I would like to be reimbursed for this. read more

We've always had a good time when we come to Osaka Sushi. I love their chirashi don, and the quality of the fish is amazing for under $20. The chicken teriyaki is always a favorite; it's very tender, the sauce is on point, and it's almost entirely breast meat - my partner hates dark meat, so this is a huge plus because so many other places do half or all thigh meat because it's cheaper. I also highly recommend the sake flights. We ordered two last night for $4 each, told our waitress what we like, and asked her to surprise us. I got lychee, grapefruit (which tasted more like fresh squeezed lemonade to me), and Fuji apple; my partner got peach, house, and plum. All of them were delicious, though my favorite was probably the lychee or apple; my partner loved the house sake most of all, funnily enough! The grapefruit one didn't taste alcoholic at all, so it's a great way for someone new to sake to ease into it. We'll definitely be back! read more

I LOVE the ambiance of Osaka Sushi. This is the second time my husband and ate here. Everything we've eaten has been amazing. We both LOVE the Japanese Nachoes. I tried the Ichi Ban Maki and the flavor combination was delicious!!! I wasn't too sure of the pink sauce since it was spicy mayo, but it was great. Never had anything wrapped in a cucumber. I get the chicken Katsu and some nigiri every time I go, and I always enjoy it. I had their seafood tepanyaki once, but i didn't enjoy it too much. The taste wasn't for me.
