If you want Platinum blonde (white) hair, avoid this place like the plague. ZERO stars if I could. I have been looking for a new stylist to do platinum for me and preferably one that uses Aveda as my sister is an Aveda Educator who usually does my hair but we do not live in the same state. I called ahead to see if there was a stylist at Orpheum that does platinum. Her name was Lena so I booked a consult to meet with her before making an appointment. When we met, I thought for sure she'd be the one- she said yes I definitely do platinum. I asked if she has many icy blonde clients and she said said yes. Needless to say, she lied to me. During my appointment, she watched the clock, not my hair to see how it was processing. Rinsing the bleach after only 30 mins and my roots were still brown. I was extremely nice and pleasant to her and asked if she would lift it again. She told me, "bleach only works for 30 mins then you have to rinse it" This could not be more false. She lifted again and yep, still have brown roots. Lena lied and deceived me saying she could do platinum when she really bad no idea what she was doing. Told me, "it's your hair that doesn't lift". I've been doing my hair platinum white blonde for 10 years, it does lift. I came back for another correction and my roots are still brassy yellow. I should have demanded a refund but I am far too nice. The owner never greeted me when I was there and apparently is one of the stylists. He walked around the salon dragging his feet and only talking to his clients. There are 8 chairs in this salon, all commission and only 4 stylists work there. One being the owner. The receptionist did not inform me about parking when we spoke on the phone and since I was a new client, she should have. When I left the second time, the time stamp on my ticket said I was there for 2hr 45mins and she deliberately only gave me enough stamps for 2 hours. She also did not know what an educator is when i told her my sister is one for Aveda. Wow. Bottom line, adorable building. That's it. This was THE WORST experience I've had at a salon. Ever. Wow! Best salon I have ever been to. I initially found this salon on Yelp, looking for something that was near my home in San Marino and I am so glad I picked this one. The front staff are very nice and gracious, the place has a very calm and relaxing vibe. I choose to work with Yoshi since so many people on Yelp really loved his work. Yoshi works with extreme precision. I was absolutely certain as soon as I sat down in the chair I was very confidant my hair cut would come out great. He spent about 1.5 hours on cutting my hair just to get things exactly right and I really love the results. The price is absolutely worth it. This was my first visit to Orpheum Salon. My appt. was with Yoshi for a hair cut and color. I am a senior with short thinning hair, so I requested a simple hair cut. Yoshi gave me a simple hair cut that turned out to be very flattering, my husband was impressed. The hair color turned out nice also. Vanessa is SO GOOD! I've kind of been in a hair rut for the past few weeks. I was always wearing my hair up, my shampoo and conditioner weren't "working," and I was pretty bored by my hair overall. Vanessa changed all of that with a great scalp massage during the shampooing process, and with a simple haircut and blowdry. My hair looks and feels so much healthier than it has been lately. I absolutely LOVED how she blowdried it. My layers stood out with the most perfect flip/curl at the ends. I will never be as good as her with a blowdryer, but after a few more haircuts with her, maybe I'll be able to copy her technique. She was friendly but not overly talkative. I enjoy that. My usual stylist was unavailable so I decided to get my hair cut by Yoshi, whom a friend had recommended. Yoshi is hands down the most meticulous and creative stylist I've ever met. He took the first few minutes analyzing my hair, testing its texture and weight. I wasn't sure what kind of style I wanted since my hair was already short, but Yoshi suggested a diamond-shape cut that would frame my wide face better and evenly balance the volume of my thick, Asian hair. The appointment took about an hour, with Yoshi carefully considering every angle. Although I came in only for a cut, Yoshi was generous enough to style my hair for no extra charge and even gave me advice on how to curl my hair. I'm definitely going to come back again once I outgrow my cut. read more

I'm not quite sure how to review this one. My stylist (sadly I have forgotten her name) was super-nice and cute and fun. She was very willing to listen to my suggestions about what to do with my hair but . . .she didn't seem to have much to suggest on her own. She also didn't quite seem to understand my hair type (flat and straight with a tendency to flip in weird directions). I ended up with a haircut that was not right for my face or hair at all, but she was just so nice about it! I lived with it for two weeks before I finally had to schedule another appointment to have it redone. I was mortified to learn that the only way to get it fixed for free was to have the same stylist do it -- and I just did not want to admit that I hated it! Once again, she was very nice and I ended up with a rather unsuccessful bob (and the back still isn't quite right). +5 stars for level of . . .um . . . niceness? -3.5 stars for quality of cut - .5 star for not having parking (I mean seriously, people, this is Pasadena. Parking should not be this much of a pain) um . . .somehow I do not think my math worked out, but . . .yeah. Not my strongest recommendation, I guess. read more

Completely inconsistent. The first time I went to Vanessa I got one of the better haircuts I have ever had, so of course I booked her again a day before a huge social event. WORST MISTAKE EVER! She completely butchered my hair and there was no time to go elsewhere to fix it! First off I specifically told her to take only an inch or less off of my length because I like my hair long. I got a shoulder length cut (3-4 inches shorter than I requested!) that was really heavy on the top layer making me look absolutely ridiculous. Not only was my upcoming event ruined but it took several months for the top layer to grow out long enough to fix. read more

I went here for the first time last week upon recommendations from two of my good friends, and couldn't have been more pleased! It's a cute little Aveda salon in Pasadena, and everyone that worked there was super friendly. I have naturally curly hair (as does one of my recommending friends), so I felt pretty good about having one of their stylists with curly hair working on me. And she did a great job! She gave me a partial highlight, and the color turned out gorgeous (if I do say so myself). She also gave me a cut and blow-dry, both of which were fabulous...it's probably the best cut I've had in years, and when she styled it, it actually looked GOOD (which can be hit-or-miss at salons...)! This place is SO my new salon! As for the parking situation, I really must say it was frightfully easy...it's just street parking! Seriously, don't get your panties in too much of a bind over this one...it's not that bad. Update 11/14/11: Jo no longer works at Orpheum. So, I moved on, too.. The draw to an Aveda-themed salon is the extra Aveda pampering, but I never really got that at Orpheum. :o( -- Jo Gavin's the only reason I keep going to this salon. She gives me consistently excellent cuts and styles and is friendly even tho' I'm on the quiet side. She always looks beautiful, which is something I value in a stylist -- stylists that care for their appearance can best advise on another's. In short, the woman is an artist and I get a lot of compliments for weeks after she does my hair. Other than that, Orpheum doesn't go the extra mile like other Aveda salons. The sensory experiences are not offered and I'm invariably on my own if I want to explore the Aveda products Orpheum sells. The vibe isn't too inviting and I put off my services as long as possible...just cuz I know Jo will deliver. read more

I've been to a lot of salons, and some really nice ones, too. Orpheum is absolutely one of my favorites--and it houses my hair god, Yoshi. First off, the salon. I've only been on week days during the day, and as result, the salon is pleasantly quiet. Even when there's two other people there getting their hair cut, it never gets too noisy. They play a local alt/indie radio station and, not that I necessarily have anything against top 40, I'd rather get my hair cut and read to Father John Misty than Katy Perry. It's a nice change of pace. Just like Gary, the owner, Orpheum feels relaxed and cool and a little different. Now, on to Yoshi. Yoshi cuts and colors hair like nobody I've ever seen before. (Not only that, but he's really fun to talk to.) I don't think I've seen a single human being be so focused on perfection and natural results. My hair was unfortunately ruined by another stylist about a year ago who fried it with bleach, and Yoshi is perfectly able to work around this. He did the best foil job I've ever had, weaving light brown through my blonde to give it dimension to the point that people think it's completely natural. And his cutting! Good lord! The cut took forever--but in a good way. It's the best haircut I've had in my life. I've had a lot of breakage because of the aforementioned bleaching, resulting in wispy-thin ends, split ends, and weird layers. After Yoshi was done (literally cutting individual strands at certain points), it was the first time in a year that I actually felt like my hair was HAIR. I got done and actually felt like I had underpaid for the haircut, given how great it was. I'd grown my hair out from a super-short pixie and as soon as it was long enough, it was ruined, which like, okay yeah I get it it's just hair big deal, but at the same time, I've been really disappointed. To have somebody make me feel like my hair is "normal" again is huge. read more

My regular stylist, made a career transition some months ago and I was a little apprehensive because she was very good and I did not really want to start with somebody new. However, before she left, she did me the great favor of recommending Melanie at Orpheum Salon. I believe she is as good- or better than my former stylist, plus she is an incredible babe, which doesn't hurt, either. I have a standing appointment every two weeks, short cut, and Melanie keeps me looking neat and my best. My requirements are basic, just the cut, but Orpheum is a full service salon, offering a wide array of services. Very much worth the drive from Silverlake or Hollywood if you are looking for a top notch stylist who gets what you are looking for. Her name is Allison. WOW. I am so happy I found a stylist who listens-- and has mad skills! She is very easy to talk to and actually hears every word you are saying. Simply awesome. She is brilliant with color--done!! Man, were the reviews right!!! He was absolutely amazing!!! Starting from when he washed my hair (best I've ever had) to the precision in cutting my hair (I think he used 4 or 5 different scissors). He also used a Japanese dry hair cutting technique that I had never seen before that reminded me of Edward Scissorhands! One of the reviews on here referred to him as 'the hair God.' I'd say that is a pretty darn accurate statement. I've had good hair stylists in the past, but NONE have come close to Yoshi. His attention to detail is UNMATCHED. He colored and cut my hair while considering EVERY SINGLE request of mine in the process. He gave me the EXACT color I wanted and the EXACT bob I wanted. I can't end this review without mentioning that NO ONE has ever blowdried my hair the way Yoshi blowdried my hair. I am a 33 year old with no baby but about a million baby hairs. Yoshi was adamant about about getting those baby hair to cooperate...he used three brushes...who does that?!...Yoshi does! First, the receptionist didn't tell me about the parking situation when I made my appt., which is that they have none and you have to park in a lot next door and get validated. When I called I specifically asked for someone who specializes in curly hair, and they gave me their least experienced stylist. I later looked at their website and found out they have 2 other stylists who specifiically concentrate on curly hair. Then, my stylist was really young and inexperienced and did an ok job on my color but then texturized my curly hair, so now I have had to live with little tiny hairs that stick up all over my head and make it look really frizzy for months afterward. Also, she burned the hell out of my scalp with the color. Plus she was nice enough but she was really talkative about her personal life (I'm mean way TOO personal) which was annoying and pretty unprofessional. Everyone else in the salon was very aloof and unfriendly. Some guy kept walking by and giving me weird looks. And lastly, since they are an Aveda salon, they are supposed to (as every other Aveda salon I've been to has, and as advertised on their website) give you little freebies like a cup of herbal tea, a little neck massage, etc. I got nothing, not even an offer for a glass of water. This may seem petty, but if I'm spending $150 and an hour and a half to get my hair done, I'd like to at least be offered a glass of water. If you go, make sure you check out the website first and specifically request a stylist you like. Go early so you can deal with the parking. And BYOB(everage) ;) read more

I first went to Glendale Salon Spa because I loved using the Aveda products, but the hairstylists there never gave me the results I wanted until I met Lina and she is truly amazing. I followed her to this salon and it is a great location. They offer parking on the side of the salon which is free on the weekends but during the week they charge, although the salon validates so you never have to pay. The salon itself is peaceful and quiet and they always off tea or water to the customer. I've been going to Lina for 5 years now and have recommended her to several friends and family members who enjoy her too. Prices can be high but you get what you deserve and a look exactly the way you imagined it! read more

I have recently relocated and needed to find a local stylist. It seems that every haircut in Pasadena is outrageously priced, and honestly, the most I want to spend on my haircut is $60 before tip. I had heard that Orpheum was reasonably priced for an Aveda salon, and thus I called and made a spur of the moment appointment. The receptionist was really friendly and helpful, and I was set up with the only stylist who was there, Dana. Dana was really nice and asked throrough specific questions about how I like my hair. She listened to everything I said and asked me specific questions as she was cutting, and took her time. I am very pleased with my cut, and was equally pleased with the price. I came to this salon since my favorite stylist, Lina, relocated her services here. She is so amazing, I drove from the far west valley to have my hair cut by her! I asked for a shoulder length cut with soft layers, and she did a superb job. Lina also is one of the few stylists I've had who never cuts off more hair than you ask her to. The salon itself was very nice, I love Aveda salons. They had a cute window seat waiting area and I was greeted by several employees as I entered. I have been needing a haircut since forever and thanks to Orpheum staying open late some weekdays, I got an appointment with Jo within a week. I brought in a picture of a pervious hair cut I got at another salon and she cut and styled it nearly exactly the same way which is all I really need in a stylist. It didn't look exactly the same but as time is going on, I am loving it more and more as it will most likely grow out perfect, which is another plus for me as well! I came here on a referral to see Molly, I have had two haircuts now and am very happy. She takes the time to make sure that it is very even and doesn't take too much off. I am in the process of growing out my natural hair color and my next visit will include some way to blend it a little better so that I don't look ridiculous... I've been getting my hair cut and highlighted by Vanessa for many years (7-8). She always makes me feel like a million bucks! She is not only a top-notch stylist, but she makes getting my hair done a fun couple of hours. I never fail to receive compliments on my hair after a trip to see her. I trust her opinion and to try new things with my hair. I've never left her feeling disappointed with my hair. The salon itself is adorable. The location is great. I originally started going here because it was within walking distance from my house, but now that I have moved to Glendale, I don't mind making the drive. Parking is always very easy to find. My hair is complimented daily thanks to Lina S. She has been my stylist since 2013, and has always had me ready for the professional speaker circuit. Lina helped me through losing all my hair during chemotherapy to stying my new hair as it came back. She makes me feel like part of her family and genuinely cares about how her work turns out. They ruined my hair right before my wedding! I recently moved to Pasadena so I came to Orpheum with my formula from my old Aveda salon. Right after the wash my roots looked red ( I have dark brown hair)! I said something but the stylist kept telling me it was the lighting in the salon. After she agreed that something was wrong she assured me she would fix it. She blamed the old reagents saying they were too oxidized ( how is that an acceptable excuse?). It looked OK in the salon but turned Auburn the next day. Luckily I found another salon that could fix my hair before the wedding. I will not be wasting any more of my money on Orpheum Salon! read more

Made an appt with Vanessa a few weeks ago. Decided to just walk on over there after reading some of the reviews that she was pretty good with cuts. Umm.. she's NOT. She doesn't know how to cut hair. She cut it exactly how I told her NOT to cut it. Her personality leaned more towards the chilly side, which I dont mind, but at least know hot to cut hair if youre a stylist. It was really disconnected. From my shortest layers (which are chin length) to the bottom length of my hair (mid back). Its top heavy and i barely had any volume at the length of my hair. Unfortunately, I can't do anything but wait for it to grow out again. Ladies, if you've ever had this type of cut, get a new stylist!!! And post about it on Yelp. Quaint and lovely salon. My hair stylist Yoshi is one of those rare talents I have encountered in hair styling. Throughout the years, many hair stylists had cut the "bob" for me. Non have match nor supersede what Yoshi has done. His precision cut, knowledge of hair, attention to details and the time spent during consultation with his client are just a few great attributes. Its just not possible. (Side note, my hair is really dry and unmanageable.) She worked her hair magic, and I swear to you, within a month after my cut, my hair grew like 4 inches!!! I've had two experiences here. The first time, I was very impressed with the cleanliness of the salon and think it's a very adorable little place. I don't remember the name of the stylist I had booked an appointment with (it may have been Vanessa), but she did a good job with my hair. Naturally, a few months later, I decided to come back. However, the day that i went, Vanessa wasn't available and I had made an appointment with one of the newer girls (I think she had been there for about 2-3 months). Although she was very nice, she did a terrible job with my hair. All I asked for was layers and to chop off maybe 1-2 inches. When I finally saw the end result, I was mortified. There were absolutely NO LAYERS at all. It was as if she just used a ruler and cut my hair straight across. I was very disappointed, but she did apologize for not clarifying what I wanted exactly. I mean... layers vs. straight edge all the way across... I've never had a problem with Vanessa nor with any other stylist when it came to "layers" in my hair. She did offer to let me come back to have it cut correctly at a later time for free, but she had already cut off too much for me to come back a week later. Overall, this really spoiled the taste I had for Orpheum during my first visit. :( read more
