In all honesty, I came to this place without even looking at the menu in advance hoping that it would be some intriguing fusion of French and Thai flavors. However, the French and Thai foods were completely separate parts of the menu which was a little disappointing. Nevertheless, the food was delicious and the dessert was great as well. It's also BYOB so you can never really go wrong with that. There are two floors and each time I've been here I asked to be seated in the bottom section because it is a lot more comfortable. The top floor seems really packed and busy but that could've been just because there was a really obnoxious group there that day. Overall, really good Thai food. Found Origin Thai to be a tad overhyped. If you visit, I definitely recommend you order from their specials and stay away from the regular Thai curries which are kinda ordinary. From the apps, we tried quite a few - Shrimp and crab meat spring roll, Golden curry puff and the Escargots (listed on their specials). The springs rolls were very good, followed by the escargots, which I didn't sample, my friends liked it. The curry puffs were pretty much tasteless, lacked any kind of flavor or seasoning. The husband got the Lobster curry special with noodles and it was delicious. It was easily the best dish on the table. Our friends sampled the Roasted rack of lamb & a Sea Bass special. Both were good, and they were happy with their choices. I got the Massaman curry with shrimp and it was a little too sweet for my taste. It come with literally three spoons of white rice. The curry had some fresh avocados to it, which I guess was their special touch, but it didn't quite work with the Thai flavors. For the desserts we got the Chocolate Cake Souffle with vanilla ice cream and the Creme Brulee. The Souffle was sinful. The service was pretty average - our server was sweet, but forgetful. They also forgot our after dinner coffee and didn't seem to care much about it. Ambience is casual and noise levels were pretty high. The meal averaged about $110 per couple. Definitely, didn't mind visiting Origin Thai once, it was a decent experience, if not amazing. read more

East meets West, a delightful Pad Thai and a delicious Steak Au Poivre both sprang forth from the same kitchen at the same time, I saw it with mine own eyes :) Reasonably priced salads and noodle dishes, kinda expensive entrees and fast service make Origin French Thai in Morristown a 3-star place for me. Started with somtum, a spicy green papaya salad. It's a huge plate of veg, crunchy long strands of papaya plus haricot vert and carrot for extra texture, gently dressed in a slightly sweet and notably spicy sauce. We ordered it mild so my dining companion would give it a chance, but it arrived hot enough to make her wince and me smile. Warm, pan-fried crusty chunks of sticky rice on the side are called "croutons", yummy. Fairly priced at $9, really food enough for 2. The steak frites was actually filet instead of a cheaper cut, the fries alongside were absolutely perfect crispy chewy salty yum, accompanied by gently cooked small (but not baby! oh no) carrots and more haricot vert, outstanding. Not cheap at $28 but a great choice. Pad Thai was a bargain at $15, noodles, bean sprouts, peanut sprinkles and a few grilled shrimp on top. Sauce was completely mild. Totally satisfying, I recommend. A nightly special offered 3 scallops, 3 shrimp and 3 mounds of black sticky rice in a curry sauce. Shrimp were grilled just a touch too long and unfortunately the enormous scallops were steamed; they were perfectly done but didn't develop that sweet salty browned exterior that I really love. I ordered medium heat but the sauce was only mildly spicy altho very tasty, unnecessarily spendy at $30. Vegetarian rating: 1.5 stars because the menu only offers house salad, somtum and a veggie imperial roll. Every noodle dish and every entree has meat. Maybe you request a curry noodle dish with tofu instead, but that option's not listed on the menu so I can't guide you. Service was efficient if a bit brusque (I like to ask questions, what can I say), so frustrating that they got the heat levels wrong twice. The kitchen was fast. The high entree prices also make me unwilling to give it 4 stars. read more

I was blown out of the water with this place. I've passed it a million times and never went because we always get Thai from a crappy place around the corner. I will never go back, no matter the price difference! We heard of this place from trying their pad thai at the Morristown festival on the green a week before. It was BYOB and they accommodated us well. First we started with the crab spring rolls and the shrimp and scallop dumplings. They were excellent, personally I really loved the dumplings more, but both were good. The spring rolls were crunchy but they weren't messy at all and the sauce they came with was great. Highly recommend getting these two appetizers. I got the pad Thai, and my boyfriend got the flat noodles, not sure what the name was. Both were great. The pad Thai was excellent, probably one of the best I've had. Also, they gave a lot of large shrimp with it. The flat noodles were good too, it had an ample amount of meat and veggies in it, including squid. Both were amazing, and decently priced. We wanted to try the fried iced cream but we were too full. The service was the best part of the meal. We barely waited for our apps or meals. She was also so nice and friendly. Usually you go to these places and they are understaffed or way too busy, but she was great. I believe she was the owners daughter. Great food and atmosphere. I was craving Pad Thai and remembered that I had a good one at lunch here several years ago. The place looks more nice and upbit than I remembered it. The restaurant is nicely decorated. It's also BYOB. We ordered the food and 5 minutes later we had our entrees served. That was a surprise. It made me wonder if the food was freshly made... The Pad Thai was good, a little more on a sweet side than I would want it to be, but good. My husband ordered Gra Praw which is a stir fry beef and it was really good as well. The source was a little spicy, but bearable for people not used to spicy. The menu also includes meat entrees that I feel are a little overpriced for this place. For me it's a casual dining and I would definitely go there for Thai food, but would not get a steak there. Overall, great experience with the food. After living in Morristown for over a year, I am glad I finally tried Origin Thai! (Better than Madame Thai imo) 5 star due to the quality, portions, and freshness. Bf and I ordered the Vietnamese Fresh Roll as an app with Pad Thai and Green Curry as our mains (Green Curry being our favorite of the two). The Chinese eggplant in the Green Curry was perfectly cooked and reminded me of my favorite Thai restaurant in Seattle. Price is very reasonable because portions are huge and we both had enough for leftovers. Excited to return and dine-in next time to try the duck! read more

I came here after work and enjoyed the chicken pad thai. Delicious and the portions are HUGE. It can be a little pricey for what you might typically pay for a chicken pad thai. It was about $20 with tax however, the portion is huge. I had almost half my plate left over and you can definitely share this entree with 2 people (maybe order an appetizer). I took half the food home and ate it as a snack later. The vibes are really nice here too, and the servers are extremely attentive. I recommend asking for hot sauce and pouring it all over your food. I brought my mom here for her birthday last Saturday. I made a reservation two days earlier, knowing it was "valentine/ presidents weekend." The place was very busy when we arrived and we had to wait just a few moments to be seated downstairs. It was a little tight and we were pretty close to our neighbors (actually, the way I was sitting, I was pretty much just watching their entire meal which was a little awkward). We were sitting in an artery so there was a lot of walking traffic and the room was very loud that I had to lean in to have a conversation. I will say, however, that the staff appeared to do their best to accommodate us and was seriously hustling around to get things done. It is BYO alcohol which is a money saver, and the staff does come around and refill waters often. We ordered the escargot to start, which was served in the shell (which I prefer). Pretty good but not the best. You really can't tell what you are eating so much because of the garlic butter. I had a house salad and my mom had the papaya salad which was wicked "hot." After taking another look at the menu online, I'm still not sure what was on the salad to make it so hot but it was pretty difficult to eat. My mom had the Bangkok Duck and I had the Ostrich. Both were incredibly tender and succulent. Very nice presentation too. Overall the price tag was fairly moderate, which may have been because of the BYO alcohol. One tip: street parking in this area on a Saturday night is terrible. Save yourself the headache and park in the Dehart Street Garage (just around the corner from the restaurant). Since this is a French/Thai place, I had to get something from both. I started off with Escargot. Perfectly cooked and very flavorful. For my main course, I had the Bangkok Duck. This was amazing. The duck was perfectly cooked and full of flavor. Even with the curry sauce on top, the duck remained crispy. This was probably the best meal that I had on my trip to Morristown. I went here with my family. I absolutely loved this place. The décor was nice and the music fit the atmosphere. We all split the shrimp crap spring rolls and it was delicious. I also tasted some of my sister in-law's hot and sour soup. It was so savory! I had the Royal Massaman Curry based on a recommendation from a friend. It was fantastic! I also tried the Wild Boar, Pad Thai, Gang Keaw Wan and Original Duck Tamarind. All are excellent choices. For dessert, we split green tea ice cream and the sticky rice and mango. Both were great. We've enjoyed our dinners and dining experience at this restaurant in past years, however recently we've noticed a change in the food quality, specifically the chicken dishes. The last time we dined there, my wife ordered the chicken green curry. The chicken was inedible, rubbery / chewy. She returned it and some time later the dish came back more edible. More recently we ordered dinner for pick up, including the chicken satay. Again, it truly was like a rubber chicken, again edible. My wife is certain it was frozen chicken that was microwaved. When we called with a complaint, the reply was "well maybe you shouldn't order it next time". They did agree to refund our credit card for that particular dish. I could have complained about my dish as well, but didn't. We used to really enjoy Origin. But something has clearly changed for the worse. read more

So I've been back a few times and my most recent visit deserves a review. Here's the thing- the food was still excellent and I LOVED it. But the service really was..... less than appetizing. Here's the scene: We made reservations for 8:30 with a party of 6. Two of us got there around 8:10 and checked-in. We were told the table wouldnt be ready early- and that's totally fine. By 8:30, four of us were there but the table still wasn't ready. We were seated at 8:45. However, because 2 in our party were late, the staff had a HUGE issue with us. I'm sorry management but it's not my fault when other people are late. I was there 20 minutes early actually, AND you still sat me 15 minutes later than my reservation. To make things worse, the manager came over at least 5 times, looked at the 2 empty chairs and shook his head back and forth. He even told us "You know we have other people waiting here who got here on time." Um, yes, and we got here on time. Here's the clincher- the 4 of us wanted to order appetizers and drinks...... but they didn't think we should do that since the late members of our party weren't there. What? SOoo we're trying to order as normal, but management is telling us we shouldnt? This repeated several times. Then, once we basically forced one of the waitresses to listen to us, we asked to order appetizers AGAIN. She walked away, consulted another waitress and then the manager, and then came back and said "You know if you order appetizers now then your meal is going to take longer and then I KNOW you will ask me why its taking so long." WHAT??? So, we were like "Ok... but we still want to order appetizers and then our meal once we pick from the menu....." Seriously??? Almost comical. read more

I've been to this restaurant 5-10 times. French is in the name because of the plating and some of the desserts. I personally love the pad see ew (flat noodles) for a reasonably priced dish that is done well here. Although not the most authentic Thai I've ever eaten (I've been to Thailand twice), it is the best option in the area. My favorite Thai place is Thai Nam Phet in Rockaway, NJ but this is always a good option closer to home. Sorry for going off on a tangent, try the chicken sate appetizer or the mango and sticky rice for dessert. As far as entrees go with thai curry. Thai food is one of my favorite cuisines, so when plans were made to meet up with a group of my girlfriends at Origins French Thai, I was super excited to check out the Morristown Thai food scene. First thing I noticed was the great location of this restaurant- right in the middle of the central shopping/dining district. Unfortunately the night we went, it was snowing, otherwise I would have loved to walk around in the area after our meal. The restaurant itself was a decent sized and the ambiance was nice. We ate upstairs because there was no seating downstairs- which I heard was nice as well. The servers got us started by opening our bottles of wine- yes, this is a BYOB (awesome). So far so good. For our appetizers, the four of us girls shared the steamed vietnamese rice ravioli and a special- a smoked salmon flatbread with creme fraiche. The one weird thing was that the ravioli came with three portions-- you would have thought that the waiter would have mentioned that when there are four of us there? And why would you serve something with uneven portions? But we made it work. I wasn't blown away by the ravioli anyway. The salmon flatbread was tasty but nothing life changing. For my entree, I went with one of my Thai food go-tos- Drunken Noodles (Pad Kee Maow). I wasn't very impressed with my dish. I did like that the shrimp was very fresh, plump and juicy but the rest of the dish was just meh. Not enough vegetables and not enough spice (although I probably was a bit too cautious in my spice level request). Towards the end of the meal, service got a little awkward. They were actively trying to push us out of our table! I totally get that there were people waiting for their reservation, but we were still enjoying the rest of our meal and the rest of our bottle of wine. I feel like if you run a BYOB you have to realize that people are going to linger at the end of their meal to finish their bottle. I don't usually criticize service in my Yelp reviews, but I felt this was noteworthy. The poor service, coupled with just average food, is what led me to taking off two stars from Origins. I had lunch here on a weekday with some coworkers. I was a little confused by the menu because of the specials. I wasn't sure if Origin was fusion or not as I saw a "duck burger" and a "chicken pot pie" on the menu. Nevertheless, I went with the thing I usually order at Thai restaurants: green curry chicken. Things started out with the choice of soup or salad. I got the soup thinking it was going to be a coconut soup, but I was pleasantly surprised by a light tomato soup. It wasn't that bad at all. Still had me confused if this restaurant was fusion or not, but I also ordered a Thai tea. Wow. One of the strongest Thai teas I've ever had. I was happy with it. Presentation of the green curry chicken was lovely, but it left me wanting a little more rice rather than the simple scoop they gave. I suppose I could have asked for more but I didn't want to seem like a pig in front of my coworkers. I was pleasantly surprised with the veggies they put in the curry like Thai eggplant and regular eggplant. I think I had some bamboo shoots in there too although they were in chunks, not in slivers. Overall, it wasn't something I would come back for as it was pretty normal. Also, I doubt I'm ever coming back to Morristown for work. Service was ok. They were attentive but there's clearly a problem with communication. One of my coworkers' orders was left out and we had to flag down a waiter after about 5 minutes of all of us having received our orders. Apparently, the chicken pot pie took a little longer to cook so the waiter asked if my coworker would like something else instead. So the issue was fixed, but still not the most stellar service. There's about 6-8 tables upstairs and a larger space downstairs. The place has a nice ambience including a fish tank as you walk in. Oh I wanted to like this place so much! I thoroughly enjoyed the cute interior and the tropical fish tank that I sat next too. I noticed there were no chopsticks, which pleased me, because that made it seem more Thai. However, I was somewhat disappointed by the food! They use excellent ingredients, and they know how to cook. However, they don't know how to put the ingredients together! Husband's massaman curry was excellent. I decided to go for the more fusion item, and got the ostrich. It was cooked perfectly, and was so tender. However, the wine sauce they used was overused, and lent such an acidic flavor that it was hard to taste the quality of the meat. I was disappointed by what had potential to be such a good dish! I would suggest that you stick with the classic Thai dishes here. I would try this place again, but I would need to order less fusiony items. read more
