Still spectacular. I am addicted to this place and can't stop thinking about the fuxi feipian. The peppercorn oils that's numbing and spicy at the same time pairs perfectly with a bed of steaming hot rice. Their beef tendon and AA lettuce are my new two favorites. I now come here at least once a week. The only thing is their service isn't great and the price is not the cheapest. But the food way makes up for it. read more

I'm from San Francisco and come to Baltimore for summer school these days. I found this place during the orientation. From the outside, the place does not look elegant. But the inside is actually comfortable. I don't understand the negative comments here because the food actually tastes good! Blughhh. Thinking about this place is making my stomach turn all over again. I'll come here multiple times a week for the bubble tea (it's the only place in the city that has it that I know of), and the sushi isn't terrible, but all the other food I've gotten from here has been pretty gross. I tried the steamed vegetable dumplings this weekend and felt nauseous for the rest of the day, and there wasn't even meat involved! Be careful which flavor of bubble tea you get, too. If you would like to be dissatisfied with some cheap Chinese food I would do everything in my power to get you to order from here. Do you like garlic chicken? This place has a great take on garlic chicken! they use a mathematical equation to give you precisely 4% chicken, 93% water chestnuts, and 1% green leaf filler. It really is amazing! I never would eat an entire tub of garlic sauce soaked water chestnuts on my own, but now, it might be ALL I EVER EAT! Also: The Szechuan string beans tasted like salt also. The delivery guy wouldn't walk up a flight of stairs to my apartment, but instead called me and waited for me to walk down when he saw me. Moral of the story: It's bad cheap Chinese food, service sucked, and portions are lame. Have some self respect and order from somewhere else. read more

I don't order off of the Americanized menu here anymore. You hear this story more often these days, about the 'two menus'. They were always a solid choice back in the day for the cheap and plentiful regular stuff, with decent utility sushi and a reliably good hot and sour soup. But now with so many Asian students at Hopkins, they've added a lot of authentic dishes, from what is clearly a talented kitchen. Here's where things get tricky. My friend and I sat down for a reliable app of sashimi. A kid walked by with a fish hotpot. 'Oh, yeah... we'll have that!'. Really, it just plain smelled that good. Now we were cheerfully warned that it was very spicey and that it had a lot of bones. We said 'Make it like you like it, chef'. Apparently, the Chinese don't mind scales any more than they mind bones. But they do like it hot like I do. Tilapia isn't my favorite fish, but this dish was bangin! The complex broth with just the fiery roasted peppers over rice alone would have been worth the price of admission. The fish was well cooked, but you'd think the chef never saw a Anglo eat an eyeball or a cheek before. Yeah, they were watching us. Hopefully, they will get a little tighter on scaling their fish. Really, scale the whole fish. On a previous visit, I had a pork stomach dish in vegetables . Don't get that, American people...... it's not for us. This might be, for all I know, the best pork stomach on the planet. Get something else. The options are plentiful. This is a no frills carry-out with some booths and a few tables. The good tea is free, though you pour it yourself. But when you walk in, you'll know they are for real. Go ahead, get adventurous. Roll them bones. If you land on a loser, go back and get something different. They have something you're gonna love, you just need to find it. read more

I am college student living in the area for the summer. Two nights ago, I decided to try Orient Express out and got takeout. I ordered a salmon roll, tuna roll, and mixed chinese vegetables which were fine until I woke up at 4 in the morning vomiting. I got sick again later that morning. I definitely learned my lesson about ordering sushi from a place that I hasn't ever been recommended to me and obviously won't ever be ordering from them again. read more

Well, on the plus side, it's very very fast. Very fast. If you're getting take out, you won't believe them when they tell you your order's ready and will keep looking over your shoulder to figure out who they've mistaken you for. So that's the good. The food isn't... atrocious per se. It's not good though. It's the epitome of fake soy sauce+cornstarch American Chinese food, and not really in the guilty pleasure way. I've never gotten sick or anything from it, and I've even occasionally bought it of my own volition three or four times this year when I've been craving something gross to eat, but I really can't recommend it. IF ONLY THERE WERE 0 STARS!!!! I had been craving Chinese for awhile and I came upon Orient while out with a friend. I should've just ate at the T-swirl crepe place next door. Upon walking in no one greeted me or addressed me until I got to the counter. It wasn't busy either. The lady behind the counter, a short, angry, and disgruntled looking older woman, had a terrible attitude. I told her I was eating in with a friend and she gave me two plastic plates and plastic utensils. While other people in the restaurant had authentic plate ware and cutlery. So there I sat with cheap plate ware after spending money in a honestly subpar restaurant. The only saving grace was the dumplings I ordered, which came TEN MINUTES after the basic general tso chicken. The food also came in a plastic container. Even though I said we were eating IN. The container for the MEDIUM general tso was a small container and the container for the rice was an EXTRA SMALL container. Throughout the whole encounter the woman behind the counter angrily glared/stared at me. Don't waste your time or money here. The service Is TERRIBLE. read more

We're pretty much regulars at Orient Express. Sushi is relatively good - definitely a reasonable price for the quality that you're getting. The spicy tuna is more spicy than I normally like, but good all around. I rarely get sushi here though. Chinese food is awesome. And by awesome I mean you had better be expecting the standard Americanized Chinese that we know and love. Typically orders are Szechuan chicken, fried rice, Orange chicken, General Tso's. Anyway, it's good, but not authentic, I'm sure. Best thing on their menu (according to me) is the crab and cheese wanton. Deep fried crab/cream cheese combo of my dreams!! And a generous portion. I'm not embarrassed (but probably should be) by the fact that I've ordered just wantons for dinner before. Anyway - love it - will go again. Not amazing, but solidly good food. read more

I'm not goin to lie, I come here a lot. Try not to judge me. I do have a good palette and I do care about what I put in my body, but if I'm craving chinese food, this is where I go cause it's close. The food is not great. however, the chef specials list is all extremely typical homecooked chinese dishes which makes me really happy, they have pork stomachs, ribs in star anise, steamed xiao long bao, and wontons, live fish and tons of great stuff thats not on the menu online, so definitely go in to order. This is a 4.5 star review. This is probably one of the only authentic Chinese places in Baltimore city. They have 2 menus ! The menu above the cashier is the american menu. They also have a dinner full chinese menu, which is pricier, but definitely tasty. Also, the chefs in the back can make customized special requests, where you give them a general idea of what food you want and they can make it! I would say their food tends to be on the greasier side, but an excellent and probably my only choice for Chinese in Baltimore city. read more

I was doing laundry next door and was suddenly overcome with pangs of hunger so great that I ignored the good advice from my fellow Yelpers to stay clear of this place. Upon entering it did have a distinctly dingy look, smell and feel. It's like the whole place is covered in frying oil then covered with dust bunnies. I ordered something I considered "safe": pork low mein. It arrived in twenty seconds flat. I opened the container and was smacked upside the head with stinky, sewagey, mold-like smelling steam. Despite the smell being near revolting, I was so hungry I couldn't stand it and I took a bite. The taste was nearly as bad as the smell. I literally spat it out and threw it away without any desire to eat anything for the next week. It was as if the dish had been pre-assembled for days and they pulled it out of a dusty back closet and tossed it in an oily hot wok to bring it up to temperature. If you ever value anyone's opinion on this place, do not venture in, not even in desperation! read more

Owned and operated by Chinese, this is the only place around Johns Hopkins Homewood campus for Chinese food; certainly not the most authentic and yummy Chinese food. Everything is greasy and coarsely cooked with little or no relevance to Chinese cuisine. Also very pricey. The restaurant is a typical Chinese take out. There are few tables inside, but overall, the restaurant does not look very clean. I mostly order take out or delivery from here. The prices are cheap. They do have a sushi bar. Also, you can try their bubble tea and other drinks. I recommend their paper chicken, which is quite cheap. But the most of the items are "so so", i.e., ok, but not too tasty. So, bottom line: if you want a cheap meal, try it. But don't expect something very awesome. read more

I'm putting aside the fact that I've grown up with amazing Chinese food (even at fast-food places), and I'm putting into consideration the fact that the diversity of Baltimore's food offerings can't compare to that of the SF bay area, where yours truly is from. My first experience more than a year ago was anything but satisfactory. What I ordered: chicken chow mein. Pretty basic. What I received: a takeout box of steamed white rice and a takeout box of chicken chow mein....without the noodles. Yes, they gave me a box of stir-fried onions, chicken, onions, bean sprouts, onions, and garlic. But mostly onions. Seriously? I guess it's not worth their time to bother telling me they were out of noodles and asking if I wanted something else. (No, they weren't unaware that I was the one who had ordered the chow mein; the waitress brought my "order" straight to me.) They couldn't even bother making some sort of "chow mein-fried rice" hybrid with the components they gave me. My second time going was not any better; the orange chicken had a stiff, hard crust that hurt my jaw to chew, and the tapioca in the bubble tea was hard and undercooked. Though I've seen people enjoying some decent-looking food here, I can't bring myself to go back to Orient Express. Again, maybe I'm just ordering everything that sucks on their menu, or maybe (my newest hypothesis) they're trying to condition me into ordering in Mandarin (sorry for preferring English?). I hate to say that this is the first Chinese fast food restaurant that I would rank underneath Panda Express. Shame. read more

Also one of the few places in the U.S. that you can get pulled noodles at "Da Pan Ji", a delicious Uighur dish (literally, "big plate of chicken"). This is your typical Chinese fast food restaurant. It's unique in that it offers an authentic Chinese menu, a feature absent in most other fast food joints. From the authentic menu, I like their fried pork ribs and da pan ji (big plate of chicken). It's hard to complain about this place given the limited Chinese options near Homewood campus. Worth eating once in awhile for something quick and greasy but that's about it. read more

Braised pork belly in brown sauce is definitely a generous helping (like one dish is big enough for a family).
