This was my go-to Chinese Fix. I used to love this place, so after they changed cooks, I gave them time to get the hang of it. And I mentioned the problem. They never did. No dish should be overpowered by oil. Ever. I tasted sesame oil clear into the next day. Even the egg drop soup was swimming in sesame oil. I got so grossed out by their use of oil, I even gave it a break in my personal cooking. Do I care about the service? No. If the food is good and they're busy, I really don't care. But I do appreciate consistency. Sadly, after several chances, they have been consistently bad. Oil. Oil, oil, OIL. I hate writing this. I want my old Orient Express back. I've ordered from this restaurant several times using Grubhub. They have a great selection of authentic Chengdu style dishes. The fish and shrimp dishes with crispy rice crust is great. They pack the crispy rice crust separately so it stays crispy. For a side dish we like the shredded potato with vinegar and sugar. Today they left out the fried rice from my order and didn't include any soy sauce (which is why I'm giving the 4 stars instead of 5). read more

After a couple years, Orient Express has finally classed up their menu and restaurant experience! Like I've previously stated, American Chinese dishes (meals catered to American palates) are hit or miss, which is fine with me! It's the Cantonese and especially Szechuan dishes that shine now. Within the last few months the place has established a new Szechuan menu (which you can also order online, yas), thanks to a new chef they've hired I believe. It's legit stuff: my favorite so far is the thinly sliced beef lung in chili oil and peanuts, served chilled. It's bit pricy overall, due to the lack of Chinese food competition, but well worth the investment for the adventurous eaters. I don't know what any of these low reviews are about. Maybe it was the people who ordered normal to-go Chinese. But if you are looking for Szechuan, hands down the best in Baltimore. The Ma Po tofu, dian dian noodles, and Szechuan chicken and chilis were amazing. Great Ma la numbing flavor. Incredible overall. My only issue was that I ate too much. Your experience at Orient Express will depend on which menu you order off of. While ordering off the American Chinese menu is risky, you can't go wrong with the Sichuan Menu (purple menu by the cash register). The restaurant has undergone major remodeling throughout the last couple years and features a really nice upstairs - where there are more booths and tables. My favorite things to order here are the authentic dumplings, pork and garlic sauce, and double cooked pork. Unfortunately the price is quite steep and excludes Orient Express from regular rotation - but there are no other authentic Asian food options within walking distance of the Hopkins undergraduate campus. read more

One of the few places that serves authentic Sichuanese food in Baltimore! We ordered in Chinese so I'm not sure of the precise names in English - loosely translated we got the eggplant, beef noodle soup, green beans, and shredded pork in sticky rice. Each of these besides the soup came with free Jasmine rice on the side. I've ordered the eggplant every time I've come here and always enjoyed the flavor - so hard to nail, and they do it right every time! The beef noodle soup came with less soup than I expected and was a little more on the bland side. However, everything together tasted delicious and reminded me of home. Appreciated the quick service, and the place was recently renovated so there's more seating the lower area. Would come back again for the food! read more

Been here a decade and somehow never discovered this restaurant. This is the best Chinese restaurant in Baltimore city, maybe the only solid one. The food is authentic. If you like spicy food, this place is for you. The issue with all the discouraging poor reviews are folks ordering the wrong things. I sure their General Tso' chicken is mediocre. Who has ever had excellent American Chinese food? Order off of the menu that has authentic dishes and you won't be disappointed (except the dumplings, those were okay). The best option for authentic Chinese food within city limits. The balding man who is occasionally behind the counter is rude af, but the other people working there are super nice and the food is tasty and cheap. The Chinese menu (which has English translations, praise the lord) really tastes like it was made for a Chinese audience rather than an American one. My favorite things here: *Dry-fried green beans/Green beans in Szechaun sauce *Spicy ox's lung This is not ox lung at all, but fuqi feipian, cold slices of slices of beef tongue and tripe in a spicy chile oil. The spicy oil it comes with is very tasty and I would recommend saving it to apply to other foods at home, like eggs or rice. *Stir fried intestines Spicy and crispy on the outside, soft on the inside. *Sushi/sashimi The sushi here is surprisingly great and fresh. The portion sizes are generous and the prices are very reasonable. You're limited to a small selection of items, though, and be aware that "white fish" is tilapia, and not "white tuna" or escolar. I would recommend getting sashimi over sushi though, since the sushi rice is a little too sour and not that tasty. It's OK for strongly flavored rolls though, since they don't give you that much rice. Not recommended: Most of the things available online. You have to order over the phone to get the good stuff, and unfortunately the good stuff is only on the paper menus that they have in-store. There is a picture of some of the Chinese menu in the photos on Yelp though -- if you like spicy food, order something from the Szechaun cuisine section. * Delivery: I highly recommend only ordering delivery over the phone, and pay in cash or give them your credit card number, since you pretty much need to skip ANYTHING that is available online or on the American menu, except for the sashimi. (I've tried most of the chef's specialties that are available online that look like they might be real Chinese food, and they are skippable.) read more

Came here for lunch and I can't relate to all the bad reviews- my experience was very positive. Ordered the Szechuan beef, which was ready about 10 minutes later- hot and flavorful. Specifically I had the lunch special which included rice and a spring roll. All for only $6.50! Great value for the portion size! Everyone saying the food isn't authentic because it's greasy needs to just take a step back. Authentic Chinese cuisine like this is always greasy everywhere I've had it. And I'm no expert, but authentic Chinese people also brought me to this restaurant and say it's good. PF Chang's shouldn't be the average reviewer's metric. Of course I'll be back to try more of their dishes (maybe I got lucky this time). Another note- you should totally sit upstairs. It's so pleasant. This is a tricky place to give a rating to, since it's not very consistent. Certain menu items on certain days are def 4s and 5s, but the standard Chinese American fare often comes out to 1s and 2s This place has come a long way... it is cleaner now with new AC put in so it's actually comfortable inside, as evidenced by more and more folks eating inside. I'd still take it back home or to the office though. Def order from the Chef Special section in their menu and/or the white board on the window front. Very authentic Chinese dishes like the double cooked pork, chicken with eggplant, and the awesome beef or ribs noodle soup! You know how chef specials elsewhere cost a bit more? Not here. $6.50 for a small and $8.50 for a large. Everything else on the menu very suspect. Vegetable fried rice? Meh. Chicken fried rice? ugh. Fried crab wontons? Super greasy and fried in old oil. Sushi? I have had avocado roll, it was cheap ($3.25) and the avocado was very very fresh. My friends have gotten their spicy tuna rolls and they look very greasy... not in a good way. The Cumin lamb is packed full of spice and super tasty. These fine folks do have some great American Chinese options including a very spicy Hot & Sour soup (my personal bellwether) and Hunan Chicken, but their claim to fame is definitely the authentic side of the menu, just don't expect any frills. read more

Had to make an update on Orient Express. It looks like they completed revamped the place! Switching the focus from American Chinese food to authentic Chinese food. Don't worry, General Tso's and sesame chicken are still available but the menu is pretty extensive now. This is great, spicy, Szechuan food. My Chinese students at Hopkins consider it the only original Chinese food in Baltimore City (in addition to one in Towson). I have watched the evolution of this formerly modest Chinese American carry-out as a local resident for more than thirty years. It's been evolving mainly due to the influx of Chinese and Chinese American students at Hopkins, offering more and more authentic Chinese food. It still has its quirks, which if you're a longtime customer you'll appreciate - you order at the cash register just like you always did. The food is served with styrofoam plates. But, now, the evolution is complete. Orient Express is without any question the finest restaurant serving Chinese food in the city if not the entire surrounding region. It is completely rocking. The food is of very high quality, delicious, and completely unexpected. Try the Sea Melon Seeds with Pepper and Bean Sauce which are small clams in their shell in a delicious, rich sauce. On top of everything, they are BYOB, so you can stop by the adjacent liquor store to pick up something to drink with your dinner. Here's another tip - you can go on the Eat24 carry out menu platform to study their menu, but not on the menu overview tab which still has an old menu. Go to the "order on-line" tab and you will see their extensive set of Asian offerings. If you are looking for authentic Chinese food within the city limits, this is the place. I usually venture out of the city to Hunan Taste in Catonsville, but when I do not feel like taking the drive, Orient Express is it, also they are on Door Dash, so I can get them delivered. I am still feeling them out with certain dishes. They are really good for their Schezuan dishes, The Kung Pao chicken is really good, also the mei fun was really delicious. I wasn't a fan of some of their more Americanized dishes, the beef and broccoli was not the best, their shrimp egg foo young was just ok, now their egg rolls are really good and fried really good. read more

Lovely woman behind the counter. It's a pick-up or sit-and-eat-fast hole in the wall that makes Chinese food and a small Sushi menu. This may shock some but.. This is my favorite sushi spot in the city. But the catch is... It's not good if you dine-in. I have only tried the Chinese food a few times, never leaving impressed. However, the day I decided to give thee sushi a try (and I was hesitant because if fresh fish quality is just a bit off, I have a major problem, don't I?). I tried a small order of sashimi and sushi. Each order costs about $3.5-5, but that's for 3 slices of sashimi or 2 nigiri. Compared to the majority of sushi spots that charge more than that PER piece, this was an excellent deal. But the best was yet to come.. I say down, and a man came to serve me my sushi on styrofoam plates, and to my disbelief, the sashimi slices were so thick and fresh! This was the best looking sashimi I've had in Baltimore. And coming from me, a Vancouver native where salmon sushi and sushi spots in general are amazing and world renowned, this is a big deal. I also got salmon and hamachi sushi which were excellent in size, quality and taste. They give plenty of pickled ginger too. I am a salmon and yellowtail fish fan, so I usually stick to those. The seaweed salad is very standard but for $3, you get a HUGE portion! Overall, I go here often for sushi cravings. Doesn't break my bank compared to other sushi spots. Too bad, there is no zero star rate available. They are a couple things that need to be addressed. 1) Customer service: don't expect anything, because there is none. The service is actually subpar for Chinese restaurant. 2) Food quality: I feel like food quality is going downhill and keep sliding. Please do not use Mexican to cook Chinese food and call it authentic Chinese food, because you should lie. Best Chinese food I'm aware of in Baltimore, by far--if you order off the authentic menu. Some highlights from what I've tried (a small subset of the menu): Spicy incense pot: I tried the chicken, but they have a few different options. It seems like they only offer fish by delivery. Spicy and savory, with a few different vegetables and lots of garlic. This description doesn't really do it justice. Delicious. Mapo tofu: Nice, silky tofu. Really well done sauce. Spicy and generous with the ground Sichuan peppercorns. I'm not sure whether there's pork in here. Kung pao chicken: (Authentic version; they also have an Americanized version, which I haven't tried) The sauce is a good balance of spicy, tangy, and tingly. Really satisfying. Chicken with Sichuan peppercorns: This one knocked me on my ass. Tons of chilies. The chicken is really nicely fried, crispy but not too heavy. Stir fried green beans: I may be getting the name wrong. The beans are nicely blistered and served with ground pork. Shanghai cabbage: Good, straightforward side. Bok choy in a savory, garlicky sauce. You wouldn't want to make a meal out of this, but it's a comforting veggie option. Stir fried cabbage: Again, I may be misremembering the name. It's the cabbage dish that isn't Shanghai cabbage. Green cabbage (like cut from a head of cabbage) in a vinegary sauce with chilies and Sichuan peppercorns. Not super spicy or tingly, but a good mix of flavors. What if you leave the authentic menu? They have the usual Americanized items, which are fine. I think there are better options for a drunken plate of General Tso's, but you could also do worse. If you have dismissed Orient Express on the basis of these items, I would urge you to give them another chance. They also have sushi. It's cheap, which is nice. The salmon tastes like nothing. The yellowtail is surprisingly good. Again, if you dismiss a Chinese restaurant because you don't like their sushi, you're doing it wrong. read more

I used to have an amazing restaurant around the corner from me in DC, which is where I fell in love with Mapo Tofu. Everything I ordered was good, just as with previous orders . All was seasoned great and delivered hot. I tried new things this time and they didn't disappoint . The only issue I had was with my Chicken Chow Mein. I was under the impression that it had noodles with it but I got rice instead. Awful! I ordered from here when it was snowing and I didn't wanna get out. Well, I could've ordered from somewhere else because it wasn't worth what I paid for! I ordered KungPao chicken and shrimp, and not only was it tasteless, there was almost no chicken in it! Two-thirds of the order was some kind of hard vegetable I couldn't identify (see pic). Note to self: Never do the cashew chicken and chicken in garlic sauce again. Only do the chicken and eggplant in garlic sauce. You'll be amazed how those two dishes can be so different. We were happy to find Orient Express this year and the two times we've ordered takeout we were impressed. The hot and salt tastes of several Szechuan dishes were quite good.
